Are Israel’s Interests in America’s Interest?
Ghali Hassan, Axis of Logic
Three years ago an Israeli Army bulldozer – manufactured and financed by the US – drove over and killed Rachel Corrie. The 23-year-old student from Washington State was in Palestine trying to protect defenceless Palestinians from Israel’s daily terror. Rachel’s horrifying death was deliberately covered-up and her name smeared in order to "protect Israel’s interests". Why is the U.S. sacrifice so much for so little? Since its creation on Pale stinian land, Israel has received massive financial, military and political aid from the U.S. to facilitate Israel’s dispossession of the Palestinian people and expansionist policy. In 1948, Israeli Jews have ethnically cleansed more than 800,000 Palestinian (75 per cent of the population) from their land and massacred tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children...

REVISIONISM AT ITS WORST
Malcom Lagauche
I have been writing about Iraq since 1991 (...) One point that I have been making all along has left some naysayers, and even anti-war people, shaking their heads: Desert Storm’s main goal was not to remove Iraqi troops from Kuwait, but to stop at least one generation of Iraqis from becoming productive citizens (...) Now, let’s get current. The Washington Post of April 16, 2006 carried the article, "For Iraqi Students, Hussein’s Arrival Is End of History." Lagauche was rig ht on the money. Iraqi textbooks have been rewritten and the country’s history literally ends in 1968. No mention of Saddam Hussein. No mention of the Ba’ath Party. No mention of the Iran-Iraq War. No mention of the 1991 attack on Iraq by the U.S. No mention of the embargo. No mention of the illegal 2003 invasion of Iraq. Just a blank space from 1968 until today. There is nothing in the books to explain the presence of U.S. military personnel all over Iraq. Are they Iraqis? No, they don’t speak Arabic. Maybe they are foreigners who just fell out of the sky and dress funny. There is speculation that in a decade’s time, the books will reflect these times, only describing Saddam Hussein as Hitler. There will be no talk about the incredible steps forward Iraq took under the Ba’ath government...

Falling into the abyss
Jassem Murad, Azzaman
...We are at the threshold of the third stage in the post-U.S. invasion. According to well-informed Iraqi observers, this stage will see the pro-U.S. disparate factions turn their guns on each other this time for the control of land and resources in a bid to undermine the country’s integrity (...) Post-invasion Iraqi police, security and army do not owe their loyalty to the national flag but to their own factions. It is not surprising therefore to hear of 'squads of dea th’ roaming Iraqi streets at a time the Interior Ministry does not move a finger to stop them...

U.S. arming of Iraq cops skates close to legal line
Cam Simpson and Liz Sly, Chicago Tribune
U.S. officials are doling out millions of dollars of arms and ammunition to Iraqi police units without safeguards required to ensure they are complying with American laws that ban taxpayer-financed assistance for foreign security forces engaged in human-rights violations, according to an internal State Department review. The previously undisclosed review shows that officials failed to take steps to comply with the laws ove r the past two years, amid mounting reports of torture and murder by Shiite-dominated Iraqi security forces. The review comes at a time when the U.S. military emphasis in Iraq has switched to training and equipping Iraqi forces to replace American troops...

From the Cold War to the Long War – only the name has been changed to protect the guilty
William Bowles, I'n'I
...This past 10 April the Guardian published an extremely misleading article that is worth addressing for everything that it doesn't say concerning US plans for the future and its so-called 'long war’ against 'international terrorism’ and it sums up the corporate media’s treatment of the continuation of the Cold War by another name. Titled 'The trailer park HQ where the 'long war’ is being waged’ and byli ned to Suzanne Goldenberg, it purports to be an examination of the fight against 'al-Qu’eda’ which is we told, what the 'long war’ is all about. Based, she tells us in a trailer park in Fort McDill, Florida, the story creates the entirely false impression that the 'long war’ is some crack-brained scheme dreamt up by a bunch of army guys hanging out in some caravans...

US plots ‘new liberation of Baghdad’
Sarah Baxter, The Sunday Times
THE American military is planning a "second liberation of Baghdad" to be carried out with the Iraqi army when a new government is installed(...) Helicopters suitable for urban warfare, such as the manoeuvrable AH-6 "Little Birds" used by the marines and special forces and armed with rocket launchers and machineguns, are likely to complement the ground attack...

GI Special 4D15: " The Worst Place Imaginable" - April 15, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
...There were no death squads and militias in Iraq before the invasion. They have infiltrated the new police and military. They are murdering anyone (men, women and children) and anyone who seems to be anti-Occupation. "There is a civil war, but not between the religious groups, but between the party militias on one side and the people on the other," said Saleh al- Mutlak, chairman of the Sunni National Dialogue Front. In the last th ree years Iraqis have been reduced to "Shiites" and "Sunnis." Their Arab and Muslim identity has been deliberately removed. Talk of "Shiites" and "Sunnis" entered Iraq with the Occupation and immediately became the dominant propaganda vocabularies of the mainstream media, amplified by the likes of CNN and the BBC...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 15 April 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice
...In a dispatch posted at 9:30pm Makkah time Saturday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Dr. Harith ad-Darri, the Chairman of the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq, the highest Sunni religious authority in the occupied country, had declared that wholesale destruction, torture, and murder are being perpetrated in Iraq by the US and its stooges and that the media are concealing the extent of the devastation. Iraq, he said, is a victim of the occupation and the media cover up. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Shaykh ad-Darri denounced the "lackey, hypocritical, and ignorant media" for concealing the reality of what is taking place in Iraq from the world. Addressing a group of people gathered for the opening of an office of the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq in Cairo, Dr. ad-Darri said that more than 200,000 Iraqis have died in the course of the last three years, "since the feet of the occupation trod on the land of Iraq"...

The finessing of Plamegate
Xymphora
...The understanding between Libby and the White House seems to be that Libby can do whatever he can to get off on a technicality. If he is convicted anyway, Bush will pardon him. All Libby’s lawyers have to do is manage the timing of the case so that Libby doesn’t actually have to report to a jail before Bush pardons him in December 2008...

Lying no longer stirs deadened senses. The loud popping of biolab balloons
Imad Khadduri
Back on June 19, 2003, I published an article on "the two alleged mobile biological weapons labs" pointing out that: "As the swelter of anger bubbles from the machination of misinformation that led to the faltering WMD casus belli for invading Iraq, the retreat and half-baked excuses of Bush, Blair, Cheney, Wolfowitz and Powell further expose the sharp edge of their deceit. Whether it was "intelligence" failure or "flailing" t he intelligence, time will soon tell. In the meantime, the fig leaves keep falling"...

Mission Accomplished: Al-CIA-duh Leaves Iraq
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
"Al Qaeda in Iraq and its presumed leader, Abu Musab Zarqawi, have conceded strategic defeat and are on their way out of the country, a top U.S. military official contended yesterday," reports the Moonie, er Washington Times. "They no longer view Iraq as fertile ground to establish a caliphate and as a place to conduct international terrorism," Lt. Gen. John R. Vines, who commands the XVIII Airborne Corps, said in an address at the neocon Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a criminal organization joined at the hip with the likes of the Project for the New American Century and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, criminal syndicates responsible for the intellectual basis behind the murder of a couple hundred thousand Iraqis and Afghans...

Desert Rats Leave The Sinking Ship
Why Rumsfeld Should Not Resign

Greg Palast , The Guardian - Comment
...President Bush is one lucky fella. I can imagine him today on the intercom with Cheney: "Well, pardner, looks like the game's up." And Cheney replies, "Hey, just hang the Rumsfeld dummy out the window until he's taken all their ammo." When Bush and Cheney read about the call for Rumsfeld's resignation today, I can just hear George saying to Dick, "Mission Accomplished." Generals, let me give you a b it of advice about choosing a target: It's the President, stupid...

Documents link Rumsfeld to prisoner's 'degrading and abusive' interrogation
Charlie Savage, The Boston Globe
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld closely monitored the late 2002 interrogation of a key Guantanamo Bay prison detainee at the same time that the prisoner was subjected to treatment that a military investigator later called "degrading and abusive," according to newly released documents. The documents, portions of a December 2005 Army inspector general report, disclosed for the first time that Rumsfeld sp oke weekly with the Guantanamo commander, Major Geoffrey Miller, about the progress of the interrogation of a Saudi man suspected of a connection to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks...

Cheney authorized leak of CIA report, Libby says
Murray Waas, National Journal
Vice President Dick Cheney directed his then-chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, on July 12, 2003 to leak to the media portions of a then-highly classified CIA report that Cheney hoped would undermine the credibility of former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, a critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policy, according to Libby's grand jury testimony in the CIA leak case and sources who have read the classified report...

In a dispatch posted at 8:25pm Makkah time Friday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that at the time of reporting US forces accompanied by their Iraqi puppet army allies were carrying out a campaign of mass raids and arrests of youths in the city of Hit, about 140km northwest of Baghdad. Rumsfeld and the generals: Splits, recriminations over Iraq debacle
Patrick Martin, WSWS
The barrage of public criticism of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld by at least half a dozen retired generals, including several with recent major roles in the US occupation of Iraq, has dealt another serious political blow to the Bush administration. It is a further demonstration of the enormous repercussions produced by failure of the US effort to establish a reliable stooge regime in the oil-rich country...
