How to Give a 9/11 Interview

Kevin Barrett Appears On 'For The Record'
By Adam Malecek, Staff Writer
July 22, 2006

This article is quite fine, but watch the absolutely splendid interview video! Barrett's lengthy, warm and compelling tour de force should be seen and studied by anyone facing civil questioning of their 9/11 beliefs. Like Dr. Stephen Jones, Kevin brings an extremely sympathetic and human voice to what are essentially horrific conversations and gives listeners both courage and hope in the process. The video can be downloaded for podcasting and other forms of sharing, and we urge you to share it widely. - Ed.

Colbert roasts Ralph Reed and the Christian Coalition

By John Amato on Religious Right

TCR-Ralph-Reed.jpg Colbert skewers Ralph Reed and the entire Christian Coalition in this segment. Ralph says that his values will win in November, which brings us to–The Word:

Video-WMP Video-QT

There are a few people that have received an A ratings from the CC and are in a wee bit of trouble with the law.

Wikipedia: Following a well-funded but failed bid for the U.S. presidency in 1988, Pat Robertson used the remains of his campaign machinery to jump-start the creation of a voter mobilization effort dubbed the Christian Coalition. Under the leadership of Robertson and Ralph Reed, the Coalition quickly became the loudest voice in the conservative Christian movement, its influence culminating with an effort to support the election of a conservative Christian to the presidency in 1996. Ralph Reed took control of day-to-day operations of the Coalition in 1989.

Israel, Iran and the US: Who Will be Blamed for Nuclear War?
Prof. Jorge Hirsch, Globalresearch.ca
The war on Lebanon may well escalate to the point where the US will use nuclear weapons against Iran, in what would be the first use of nuclear weapons in war since Nagasaki. And the world may well blame the Jewish State. Israel's bombing campaign which is causing immense suffering, is in blatant violation of the Geneva conventions, and deserves the strongest of condemnations. It is especially important for the Jewi! sh community today to distance itself from Israel's immoral government policies and US's support for them. Many Jews are doing this, unfortunately, many are not...

Dan Halutz: Target Civilians in Retribution
Kurt Nimmo
IOF chief of staff Dan Halutz "has given the order to the air force to destroy 10 multi-storey buildings in the Dahaya district (of Beirut) in response to every rocket fired on Haifa," reports Khaleej Times, citing IOF radio. One can’t help but think of the Nazis when hearing this news. Not unlike the Ordungspolizei and Wehrmacht in Eastern Europe, the Israeli military has signaled its desire to take collective punishment to a new and horrific level, but then! , since few complain and the corporate media cheers them on, this should be expected. Dan Halutz appears to be a modern Erich von dem Bach, SS-Obergruppenführer, responsible for reprisal actions against partisans (terrorists, of course) and the shooting of POWs during the September Campaign (Fall Weiß), or invasion of Poland and Eastern Europe in 1939...

UK government sources confirm war with Iran is on
Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed, Online Journal Contributing Writer
In the last few days, I learned from a credible and informed source that a former senior Labour government minister, who continues to be well-connected to British military and security officials, confirms that Britain and the United States " . . . will go to war with Iran before the end of the year." As we now know from similar reporting prior to the invasion of Iraq, it's quite possible that the war planni! ng may indeed change repeatedly, and the war may again be postponed. In any case, it's worth noting that the information from a former Labour Minister corroborates expert analyses suggesting that Israel, with US and British support, is deliberately escalating the cycle of retaliation to legitimize the imminent targeting of Iran before year's end...

...The murder of Hariri was the beginning of a large scale destabilization plan of all Lebanon, and it tracks, lead to the Lebanese civil war and ends in the Washington, New York and Jerusalem in recent days. It was a cooperation work between the US, Israeli Mosad and Anti-Syria Lebanese in exile, among the people quoted by the German journalist is Moustafa Al-Nasser, former adviser of M.Hariri, which said: "The assassination of Hariri is the work of the Israeli secret service! , Mossad, the purpose of which is to create political tensions in Lebanon"...

Time interviews Izzat al-Douri
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
...Time forgot to mention one subject in their questions or the accompanying article -- al-Douri's family. In November, 2003, the U.S. illegally arrested his wife and daughter, in contravention of the Geneva Conventions, in order to pressure al-Douri into surrendering. As late as June 2004 their detention continued, and I know of nothing to indicate that that has changed (although it may well have). Are his wife and daughter still in detention? How d! id he feel about the U.S. imprisoning them for at least a half year, if not for many years? We don't know the answer...

Quote of the Day
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
"Israel is defending the whole world. She's doing all the dirty work." - 12-year-old Jonathan Sapir, an Israeli living in the U.S., at a pro-Israel rally in San Jose yesterday. "Dirty work" indeed. Out of the mouths of babes. Some of the other quotes from the article are equally interesting. Jonathan's mother Sima says this: "9/11 happened once here. But 9/11s happen almost every week, everywhere in Israel. We are not free." Well, let's see. Isra! el's population is 7 million people; even considering a "proportionality" of deaths compared to the US' 300 million, a "9/11 every week" would amount to 70 Israelis being killed every week. In the last six years, 1100 Israelis have been killed in conflicts with Palestinians and now Lebanese. That's 3.5 people a week, or 5% of a 9/11 every week. Let's contrast that to Lebanon. With a population of 3.8 million (two weeks ago, anyway), a "9/11 every week" would amount to 38 people killed a week. Israel has been bombing Lebanon for 12 days now, and killed at least 380 people, or 221 people a week. That's nearly six "9/11's every week."...

Exclusive: Insurgent Ba'athist In His Own Words
Interview with Izzat al-Dourii

Times Online
...The Ba'ath's position on negotiations, especially with the American and [British] sides, is clear. It rests on principles that cannot be prejudiced or impaired by any individual or party. They are: 1. Recognition of the resistance in all its forms — Islamist, patriotic, and nationalist — any group whose aim is to liberate Iraq from the invasion forces. 2. An announcement of withdrawal of U.S. forces, without re! striction or condition. 3. Complete cessation of raids, round-ups, and operations involving killing and destruction. 4. Release of all captives, detainees, and prisoners. 5. Restoration of the [old] army and national security forces. There have been no negotiations with the Americans, merely attempts by the American side to make contact with the Ba'ath Party and to negotiate with it in order to draw it into the political game. Similar attempts have taken place with other anti-occupation parties. No dialogue will take place — with any party — that is not on the basis of these principles...

Lebanon...What I pity
Samah Idriss, Online Journal Guest Writer
...What I pity about you, Lebanon, is that you should be afflicted by a leadership that did not take advantage of the liberation in 2000 to fortify the South and other areas against future Israeli aggressions. (And anyone who took into consideration Israel’s history and ambitions in this region could have seen that more aggression was not long in the waiting.) The successive Lebanese cabinets failed to build shelters, pave roads, or invest in the ins! titutions that contribute to a populace’s steadfastness (such as hospitals, schools, universities, etc), despite the millions of dollars that were received from Arab regimes after each Israeli attack and were passed on to the Council for the South....

David DeGraw, Alternet

The release, titled Setting The Record Straight, endorses an LA Times Op-Ed that calls for Israel to attack Syria: "It's time to let the Israelis take off the gloves…. Israel’s “Breathing Space” Occupation on Schedule
Kurt Nimmo
"OC Northern Command Maj.-Gen. Udi Adam acknowledged in a briefing at Northern Command headquarters in Safed on Sunday afternoon that the commander of the IDF’s civil administration unit had already begun preparations toward the possibility of instituting a military administration in areas captured by the IDF over the last week," reports the neocon-friendly Jerusalem Post. "According to Adam, 'Certain units who will give us breathing space have been cal! led up, including the commander of that unit.’ The unit’s activation, however, would only take place following comprehensive consultations, he said." In other words, regardless of all the flimsy assurances offered by the corporate media, waist-deep in the process of sanitizing (or ignoring) Israel’s war crimes in Lebanon, the Zionist state will once again occupy southern Lebanon. It has nothing to do with "breathing space" and everything to do with kleptomania, a prominent feature of the Israeli state since its inception...

US, UN give Israel green light for Lebanon slaughter
Larry Chin, Online Journal Associate Editor
Israel has begun a massive invasion and possible reoccupation of Lebanon, with the enthusiastic support of the Bush administration, and the "international community." As the world "evacuates" Lebanon, Israeli forces were massing for a major ground offensive, having already been given the green light to kill as it pleases. New reports reveal that an Israeli war has been planned, simulated and rehearsed since 2000, and ! disseminated on an "off record" basis to high-level US officials (and policy think tanks, and journalists) by senior Israeli army officers for the past year. This confirms that every aspect of this Israel-led holocaust has been deliberate and orchestrated, coordinated with full Washington foreknowledge and assistance. According to Gerald Steinberg, professor at Bar-Ilan University, "Of all of Israel’s wars since 1948, this was the one for which Israel was most prepared."...

Israeli Warplanes target Red Cross and UN in southern Lebanon
Commentary by Michel Chossudovsky

Globalresearch.ca
This report published by the Malaysian Sun confirms that Israeli war planes are now targeting the UN and the Red Cross. No doubt, we will be told that this is "collateral damage". The underlying objective is criminal. Israel seeks, in blatant violation of international law, to prevent the flow of humanitarian aid to Lebanese civilians. If the United Nations Security Council does not imple! ment sanctions against Israel, when UN sponsored missions and accredited humanitarian organizations are the target of Israeli war planes, what can we conclude? Is this end of the United Nations as an international body? The arrogance and criminality of Israel is beyond bounds...

... According to an announcement posted on the patriotic Iraqi albasrah.net website, a spokesman for the Iraqi Baath Party declared on Sunday that the deterioration in the health of the General Secretary of the Party and President of Iraq Saddam Husayn and his admission to hospital as a result of his hunger strike was all due to the failure of the occupation to ! respond to the President’s demands that his defense team be provided proper protection. The Baath Party spokesman "emphatically warned" the American Administration against the response that would be mounted should any harm befall the President. The Party, the spokesman said, "will be obligated to respond with all available means against the American Administration and its stooge officials for this crime, should anything bad happen" to the President...

Medical staff from the Lebanese Red Cross Society continue evacuating the wounded and sick under very difficult and dangerous conditions. The latest of these incidents occurred on 23 July, at 11.15 ! pm in Cana, a village in southern Lebanon. According to Lebanese Red Cross reports, two of its ambulances were struck by munitions, although both vehicles were clearly marked by the red cross emblem and flashing lights that were visible at a great distance. 1. Yes, Israel has a right to defend itself...........29.26%

2. No, Israel is going too far ............................70.74%

On his site Hannity boasts that he's "Tuned into America". Looks like he needs to change the radio dial on this one. Or bring in a whole bunch of ringers to vote the approved FOX way.

ACLU Defends Troop Hating Church

Why am I not surprised the ACLU is defending a bunch of anti-troop Democrats:

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—A Kansas church group that protests at military funerals nationwide filed suit in federal court, saying a Missouri law banning such picketing infringes on religious freedom and free speech.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit Friday in the U.S. District Court in Jefferson City, Mo., on behalf of the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church, which has outraged mourning communities by picketing service members’ funerals with signs condemning homosexuality.

But don’t question their patriotism.

Keeping Our Minds Supple
Questioning Everything

A lot of people feel threatened if they feel they are being asked to question their cherished beliefs or their perception of reality. Yet questioning is what keeps our minds supple and strong. Simply settling on one way of seeing things and refusing to be open to other possibilities makes the mind rigid and generally creates a restrictive and uncomfortable atmosphere. We all know someone who refuses to budge on one or more issues, and we may have our own sacred cows that could use a little prodding. Being open-minded means that we are willing to question everything, including those things we take for granted.

A willingness to question everything, even things we are sure we are right about, can shake us out of complacency and reinvigorate our minds, opening us up to understanding people and perspectives that were alien to us before. This alone is good reason to remain inquisitive, no matter how much experience we have or how old we get. In the Zen tradition, this willingness to question is known as beginner's mind, and it has a way of generating possibilities we couldn't have seen from the point of view of knowing something with certainty. The willingness to question everything doesn't necessarily mean we don't believe in anything at all, and it doesn't mean we have to question every single thing in the world every minute of the day. It just means that we are humble enough to acknowledge how little we actually know about the mysterious universe we call home.

Nearly every revolutionary change in the history of human progress came about because someone questioned some time-honored belief or tradition and in doing so revealed a new truth, a new way of doing things, or a new standard for ethical and moral behavior. Just so, a commitment to staying open and inquisitive in our own individual lives can lead us to new personal revolutions and truths, truths that we will hopefully, for the sake of our growth, remain open to questioning.

The Fog of War

By akeelshah74@hotmail.com (Akeel Shah)

Just wanted to share a very very good documentary that you can watch in its entirety on google video. The documentary is Errol Morris' The Fog of War. It's basically a 2 hour interview with Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy administration, one of the architects of the Vietnam war. A really fascinating and likeable guy, and suprisingly sharp for an 85 year old. Sit back and soak up McNamara's rules of war gained from a lifetime of experience as a strategist. Too bad he's not in charge of the Department of Defense today, I'm pretty sure he'd be a vast improvement.

From Wikipedia, here's a list of McNamara's lessons:

The film's eleven lessons

1. Empathize with your enemy.
2. Rationality will not save us.
3. There's something beyond one's self.
4. Maximize efficiency.
5. Proportionality should be a guideline in war.
6. Get the data.
7. Belief and seeing are both often wrong.
8. Be prepared to reexamine your reasoning.
9. In order to do good, you may have to engage in evil.
10.Never say never.
11.You can't change human nature.

McNamara's additional ten lessons
These were written as a companion to the film and were included in the Special Features of the DVD.

1. The human race will not eliminate war in this century but we can reduce war, the level of killing, by adhering to the principles of a just war, in particular of proportionality.

2. The indefinite combinations of human fallibility and nuclear weapons will lead to the destruction of nations.

3. We are the most powerful nation in the world - economically, politically, and militarily - and we are likely to remain so for decades ahead. But we are not omniscient.

4. If we cannot persuade other nations with similar interests and similar values of the merits of the proposed use of that power, we should not proceed unilaterally except in the unlikely requirement to defend the continental US, Alaska and Hawaii.

4.Moral principles are often ambiguous guides to foreign policy and defense policy, but surely we can agree that we should establish as a major goal of U.S. foreign policy and, indeed, of foreign policy across the globe : the avoidance in this century of the carnage--160 million dead--caused by conflict in the 20th century.

5. We, the richest nation in the world, have failed in our responsibility to our own poor and to the disadvantaged across the world to help them advance their welfare in the most fundamental terms of nutrition, literacy, health, and employment.

6. Corporate executives must recognize there is no contradiction between a soft heart and a hard head. Of course, they have responsibilities to their employees, their customers and to society as a whole.

7. President Kennedy believed a primary responsibility of a president--indeed "the" primary responsibility of a president--is to keep the nation out of war, if at all possible.

8. War is a blunt instrument by which to settle disputes between or within nations, and economic sanctions are rarely effective. Therefore, we should build a system of jurisprudence based on the International Court--that the U.S. has refused to support--which would hold individuals responsible for crimes against humanity.

9. If we are to deal effectively with terrorists across the globe, we must develop a sense of empathy--I don't mean "sympathy" but rather "understanding" to counter their attacks on us and the Western World.

10. One of the greatest dangers we face today is the risk of mass destruction as a result of the breakdown of the Non-Proliferation Regime. We--the U.S. are contributing to that breakdown.

11 Lessons from Vietnam

The origin of the film's lesson concept, these eleven came from McNamara's book In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam:

1. We misjudged then — and we have since — the geopolitical intentions of our adversaries … and we exaggerated the dangers to the United States of their actions.

2. We viewed the people and leaders of South Vietnam in terms of our own experience … We totally misjudged the political forces within the country.

3. We underestimated the power of nationalism to motivate a people to fight and die for their beliefs and values.

4. Our judgments of friend and foe alike reflected our profound ignorance of the history, culture, and politics of the people in the area, and the personalities and habits of their leaders.

5. We failed then — and have since — to recognize the limitations of modern, high-technology military equipment, forces and doctrine…

5. We failed as well to adapt our military tactics to the task of winning the hearts and minds of people from a totally different culture.

6. We failed to draw Congress and the American people into a full and frank discussion and debate of the pros and cons of a large-scale military involvement … before we initiated the action.

7. After the action got under way and unanticipated events forced us off our planned course … we did not fully explain what was happening and why we were doing what we did.

8. We did not recognize that neither our people nor our leaders are omniscient. Our judgment of what is in another people's or country's best interest should be put to the test of open discussion in international forums. We do not have the God-given right to shape every nation in our image or as we choose.

9. We did not hold to the principle that U.S. military action … should be carried out only in conjunction with multinational forces supported fully (and not merely cosmetically) by the international community.

10. We failed to recognize that in international affairs, as in other aspects of life, there may be problems for which there are no immediate solutions … At times, we may have to live with an imperfect, untidy world.

11. Underlying many of these errors lay our failure to organize the top echelons of the executive branch to deal effectively with the extraordinarily complex range of political and military issues.

wow...doesn't that last list sound familiar? ;-)
