A quick review of the teaser of the nuking of Iran before they roll out the feature presentation.

First of all, the target isn't Iran, though of course it will be Iranians who may die by the hundreds of thousands should nuclear weapons be greenlighted for Washington's latest McGuffin. But Iran is no more the target than Japan was for Fat Man and Little Boy.

The principal target demographic for the atrocity still on storyboards is Russia and China. The nuking of Iran will be a blockbuster remaking of the demonstration events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which announced to the Soviet Union and all comers that the American Aeon had arrived. At least that's how it will appear, and how it's being sold in the boardroom of America Inc. But the large stakeholders who are short-selling their shares in the Homeland, who supply sewage to its army for drinking water and whose loyalties are neither to that nor any other nation-state, may intend, rather, a windfall gotterdammerung that's more Springtime for Hitler.

The Council on Foreign Relations' Foreign Affairs primes the pump with triumphalist glitz in its March/April issue, confidently anticipating the coming end of the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction with the proclamation, "It will probably soon be possible for the United States to destroy the long-range nuclear arsenals of Russia or China with a first strike."

Ring them bells: some would have it that the new balance of terror has been wargamed, and the balance has so tipped that the United States can terrorize the world at will. On the irradiated soil of the simulated East, everything's coming up roses:

To determine how much the nuclear balance has changed since the Cold War, we ran a computer model of a hypothetical U.S. attack on Russia's nuclear arsenal using the standard unclassified formulas that defense analysts have used for decades. We assigned U.S. nuclear warheads to Russian targets on the basis of two criteria: the most accurate weapons were aimed at the hardest targets, and the fastest-arriving weapons at the Russian forces that can react most quickly. Because Russia is essentially blind to a submarine attack from the Pacific and would have great difficulty detecting the approach of low-flying stealthy nuclear-armed cruise missiles, we targeted each Russian weapon system with at least one submarine-based warhead or cruise missile. An attack organized in this manner would give Russian leaders virtually no warning.

This simple plan is presumably less effective than Washington's actual strategy, which the U.S. government has spent decades perfecting. The real U.S. war plan may call for first targeting Russia's command and control, sabotaging Russia's radar stations, or taking other preemptive measures - all of which would make the actual U.S. force far more lethal than our model assumes.

According to our model, such a simplified surprise attack would have a good chance of destroying every Russian bomber base, submarine, and ICBM. This finding is not based on best-case assumptions or an unrealistic scenario in which U.S. missiles perform perfectly and the warheads hit their targets without fail. Rather, we used standard assumptions to estimate the likely inaccuracy and unreliability of U.S. weapons systems. Moreover, our model indicates that all of Russia's strategic nuclear arsenal would still be destroyed even if U.S. weapons were 20 percent less accurate than we assumed, or if U.S. weapons were only 70 percent reliable, or if Russian ICBM silos were 50 percent "harder" (more reinforced, and hence more resistant to attack) than we expected. (Of course, the unclassified estimates we used may understate the capabilities of U.S. forces, making an attack even more likely to succeed.)

There's a secondary audience for this, and it's us. Going nuclear has long been unthinkable, and the Dark Powers consider the problem to be the prohibition of our ethical tripwire, not the weapons themselves. So leaks are leaked and denied and the media assets go to work. It's how the unthinkable enters thought.

And one more thought. If Iran is nuked, it doesn't mean we're suddenly in an End Game scenario. We're already in it. Except for the shadows beneath the mushroom cloud apocalypse doesn't come in an instant. The breaking of souls is incremental. We are meant to acclimatize ourselves to Hell, to raise our children in it, and teach them to expect worse to come.

Carrying on from this post, do you remember The Spirit of the Beehive? Here's yet another example of the "buzzing of bees" common to boundary experiences, this one mentioned in a 1996 interview by cereologist Colin Andrews when asked, "What was your most memorable crop circle experience and why?":

While visiting a circle in a remote field at Kimpton, Hampshire, England during July 1987, I heard a very strange buzzing sound which was close to me and appeared to interact with me. I was overwhelmed by the experience and it left me very touched because it began after I had stood near the ring alone and prayed for a clue as to what the crop circles were about. A year later, the same sound was recorded on two occasions in crop circles -- one was at "Operation White Crow," the other while a BBC Television crew were interviewing myself and Pat Delgado, my co-author of "Circular Evidence."

Debunkers quickly ascribed the trilling on the "White Crow" tape to the Grasshopper Warbler, though the bird is rare and its habitat is marshland rather than crop fields. More persuasively, an audio analysis of the frequencies show them to be oscillating at entirely different frequencies. And frequencies can be as serious as a heart attack, because that's the heart when it loses its own. "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" may be a sensible question after all.

Karl Pribram, "one of the world's leading cognitive neuroscientists," is best known for his holonomic model of the brain. Pribram's model suggests that cerebral function follows holographic principals, with memory and information "stored not in cells, but rather in wave interference patterns."

"What had occured to Pribram," Lynne McTaggart writes in The Field, "is that when we look at something, we don't 'see' the image of it in the back of our heads or on the back of our retinas, but in the three dimensions and out in the world." That is to say, sight creates a virtual image of an object in the same place as the actual object, and memories are preserved in highly efficient wave-frequency patterns distributed throughout the brain rather than as discrete bits of information assigned to localized regions. (Though Pribram's theory of distributed memory was first greeted with much disbelief in the 1960s, it has since been supported by the laboratory work of fellow researchers (numerous vivisections, for instance, on the brains of salamanders have demonstrated they share the attribute of generalized recall).

When we observe the world, Pribram theorized, we do so on a much deeper level than the sticks-and-stones world "out there." Our brain primarily talks to itself and to the rest of the body not with words or images, or even bits or chemical impulses, but in the language of wave interference: the language of phase, amplitude and frequency - the "spectral domain." We perceive an object by "resonating" with it, getting "in synch" with it. To know the world is literally to be on its wavelength.

In a sense, in the act of observation, we are transforming the timeless, spaceless world of interference patterns into the concret and discrete world of space and time.... As with a holgram, the lens of the eye picks up certain interference patterns and then converts them into three-dimensional images.... If we are projecting images all the time out in space, our image of the world is actually a virtual creation.

A holographic brain should be expected as the natural, biological decoder of a holographic universe, such as that of quantum physicist David Bohm. In these compatable models, the brain becomes a participant in the construction of reality by assembling certain frequencies of wave patterns. Just as a hologram cannot be divided against itself as each division contains the base wave pattern required to recreate the image, so Bohm says our brains are smaller aspects of the whole picture that nonetheless "contain the whole knowledge of the universe." Our perspectives are determined by the frequencies to which we're attuned, so the virtual reality we construct encompasses only a narrow spectrum of the quantum wave pattern, or zero point field, that both contains us and which we ourselves contain.

DNA, we've noted, is biophotonic. It's a "coherent source of light, like a laser." A laser, of course, is a useful tool for the creation of holograms.

Light is a form of wave motion, as is sound. A formerly distinguishing characteristic of the two was thought to be that light can travel through empty space, while sound needs a medium, but zero point theory has done away with the vacuum: light traverses the medium of the quantum field. Shamanic initiations appear to stimulate the reception of both wave patterns. For instance, ayahuasca ceremonies generate visual stimuli while the presiding ayahuasqueros sing sacred songs, icaros, said to be taught by the plants or elemental spirits. "I am not the one creating the song," says a shaman. "It passes through me as if I were a radio":

The notion that ayahuasqueros learn their songs directly from the spirits is generalized. According to Townsley (1993), Yaminahua shamans "are adamant that the songs are not ultimately created or owned by them at all, but by the yoshi [spirits] themselves, who "show" or "give" their songs, with their attendant powers, to those shamans good enough to "receive" them.... Chaumeil (1993) talks of the extremely high-pitched sounds emitted by the spirits who communicate with Yagua shamans, more particularly of "strange melodies both whistled and talked," with a strong feminine connotation"

If life is vibration, then music must not be incidental to it. (See, for instance, "Vibration, Music and the Basic Truths of Reality.")

In 1891 Margaret Watts-Hughes sang notes into a device containing lycopodium powder and captured for the first time precise geometric patterns on film. Seventy six years later, Swiss scientist Hans Jenny published his first study on the transmission of sound through electronic frequencies:

He observed how sound vibration created geometric shapes - a low frequency produced a simple circle encompassed by rings, whereas a higher frequency increased the number of concentric rings around a central circle. As the frequencies rose so, too, did the complexity of shapes, to the point where tetrahedrons, mandalas and other sacred forms could be discerned. Like Margaret before him, Jenny enabled humanity to observe 'frozen music'.

The late Gerald Hawkins, former chair of the astronomy department at Boston University, identified a musical scale embedded in the geometry of the crop circles depicted in the early study Circular Evidence, that conformed to the "diatonic ratio," or the white keys of a piano. Hawkins' also found that circle patterns contained a formerly unexpressed Euclidian theorem.

Colin Andrews, whose most memorable experience in a circle was the "strange buzzing sound," says something like three quarters of the patterns made today are probably hoaxes, lacking such properties as magnetic anomalies ("the magnetic field within 20% of crop circles is consistently a few degrees rotationally out of sink with the magnetic field of the earth"), electronic malfunction, cellular change to the grain which germinates seeds growing up to 40% faster than seeds from unaffected plants in the same field, the emission of sound and more.

But perhaps even the hoaxers are unwitting participants in a genuine mystery, because human consciousness appears to be engaged somehow in even the creation of the most mysterious pictograms.

In the early days of crop research, Colin Andrews dreamt of a Celtic cross pattern which hadn't been seen in the fields before. The next morning one was discovered in a field adjoining his home. Busty Taylor, an aerial photographer, was flying with a colleague when he remarked "all we need right now is to see all the designs that have appeared so far rolled up into a Celtic cross." The next day, flying over the same field, he saw the precise depiction of his imagined pattern. These examples and more are reminiscent of UFO reports in which observers describe the objects in the sky as though behaving with an intelligence that is reading their minds.

Researcher Ed Sherwood has found "The Nine" of the Great Ennead of Ancient Egypt - and of Sirius, and Andrija Puharich - represented symbolically in every crop circle season since the early 1980s, when "crop circle seasons" began. He additionally notes that the "contact" of the "White Crow" trilling happened before nine witnesses, on the ninth day of the operation, on the 18th of the month. (For what it's worth, visions of large pyramids surrounded by waves of energy and vibrant colours have been described by "sensitives" while standing in the patterns, as recounted by Eltjo Haselhoff in The Deepening Complexity of Crop Circles.)

Laurence Rockefeller spent a fortune - or what might pass as a fortune for the rest of us - on paranormal research, and gave particular attention in his later years to UFOs and crop circles. I think it's always instructive to consider what captures a Rockefeller's interest.

All this talk of supernatural buzzing reminded me of Carlos Castaneda. From an interview in a mag called Electro Print Graphics from 1968: "They (shamans) believe that for instance in the matter of peyote, anybody who intakes peyote hears a buzzing in the ears. However the Indians believe that there a seventeen types of buzzing. And each one then will then respond to a precise nature of the visitation. The deity Mescalito, comes in a specific way. And it announces it, by buzzing."

Mysterious Maddening Buzzing Probed in Southwest Germany

KARLSRUHE, Germany - Hundreds of people in Germany's southwest are being driven to distraction by a mysterious nocturnal buzzing noise -- seriously enough for the local authorities to decide to investigate the matter scientifically.

Many have been complaining of racing pulse and fatigue along with a sense of excitation and uncontrollable muscle quivering during their resulting insomnia.

"Often at night I feel as if my bed were electrically charged. The pillow, the mattress and my whole body vibrate, and the only thing you want to do is to be able to turn off that sound," said one of the sufferers, Carmen Mischke.

From Lake Constance to Heidelberg, the environment department of the Baden-Wuerttemberg state government has been hearing similar stories from people over nearly 24 months.

Now the authorities have commissioned the physicist Henriche Menges to take a closer look at ten out of 300 homes which have reported the phenomenon.

If one were to believe the authors of the German website www.raum-und-zeit.de, the source of the mysterious buzzing sound in the ears of afflicted citizens is a US military project named HAARP based in Alaska.

There the US military are supposed to have built a kind of giant energy accelerator whose electro-magnetic waves could be used as a super-weapon to "make a nation dance on one leg" or drive a whole city of people insane.

Menges has no time right now for such fantastic-sounding theories. "We are starting off with the likelier explanations and leaving the more speculative ones aside," he answered politely when asked what he thought about that particular idea.

The scientist is tracking down the buzzing equipped with a microphone and sensors able to detect low-frequency vibrations.

He said that such deep buzzing sounds could come from diesel motors, aircraft, waterfalls or compressors as used in refrigerators and air-conditioning equipment. But wind blowing over chimneys could also act as a giant organ pipe, he said.

The human ear can detect sounds as low as 20-40 hertz, and the microphone Menges and his team are using can detect sounds as low as eight hertz, while the vibration sensors are sensitive to as low as three hertz.

This is important because human internal organs are sensitive to vibrations as low as between six to 12 hertz and can detect them.

Menges believes that the buzzing or booming is due to sound waves because of the sensitivity of people's ears and abdomens to them. He has ruled out electromagnetic waves such as those emitted by portable telephones because they are nothing like enough intense enough.

Low-frequency sound waves on the other hand can be propagated over a distance of kilometers (miles) and can even pass through thick concrete, making identification of the source difficult.

Work in Germany on measuring the phenomenon is expected to continue into the autumn.

Whether the mystery will be elucidated is uncertain, even for Menges. A similar one in the small town of Taos in the US state of New Mexico was investigated in the early 1990s without result, he pointed out.

A "Working Group for Investigation of the Buzzing Sound", which says people in the Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia regions of western Germany have had similar experiences, reckons that the cause is likely due to low-frequency sound vibrations.

However it says that a "very long-frequency electromagnetic field" of between 0.5 to 50 hertz has also been measured in the region and could point to an explanation.

That was Wink of an Eye, written by Gene L Coon. ("A group of five Scalosians claims to be the last survivors of a civilization of 900,000. However, a landing party consisting of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Compton is unable to locate the source of the transmission. Kirk thinks he detects the buzzing of insects, but the tricorder does not register them.")

Coon was a friend and longtime collaborator of Gene Roddenberry, and died, I think, in 1973. I wrote about Roddenberry earlier:

In the early 1970s, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was a regular at the sessions of channeller Phylis Schlemmer to whom the Nine had revealed themselves through the manifestation of a spirit guide called "Tom." Schlemmer initially assumed Tom must be her grandfather Thomas, who died when she was a child. In September 1974 Roddenberry asked Tom the question, "To whom am I talking? Do you have a name?" Tom's reply, through the entranced Schlemmer, as quoted by Picknett and Price:

"As you know, I am the spokesman for the Nine. But I also have another position, which I have with you in the project. I will try to give you names so you can understand in what you work and who we are. I may not pronounce who I am in a manner which you would understand because of the problem in the Being's [i.e., Schlemmer] brain, but I will explain so that the Doctor [Puharich] perhaps will understand. I am Tom, but I am also Harmarchis, I am also Harenkur, I am also known as Tum and I am known as Atum."

It took 22 years, and Gene Roddenberry, for the Nine to reveal themselves as The Nine, the Great Ennead of ancient Egypt: Atum, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, Osiris, Isis, Set and Nepthys. Their message amounts to, We're back, and now it's personal.

I just found this tonight:

In May, 1975 Roddenberry was brought in by Paramount to develop a possible Star Trek movie but his script was rejected and the project shelved. Gene worked on a pilot that year called "The Nine," a bizarre, semi-autobiographical concoction that combined a screwed-up TV producer with a commune of telepathic creatures.

All of that reminds me of this line I read tonight in Grant Morrison's The Invisibles: "Time machines, UFOs, demons and angels from holographic universes, the end of the world. It's like a film, isn't it? It's like America."

A top scientist gave a speech to the Texas Academy of Science last month in which he advocated the need to exterminate 90% of the population through the airborne ebola virus. Dr. Eric R. Pianka's chilling comments, and their enthusiastic reception again underscore the elite's agenda to enact horrifying measures of population control.

Pianka's speech was ordered to be kept off the record before it began as cameras were turned away and hundreds of students, scientists and professors sat in attendance.

Saying the public was not ready to hear the information presented, Pianka began by exclaiming, "We're no better than bacteria!", as he jumped into a doomsday malthusian rant about overpopulation destroying the earth.

Standing in front of a slide of human skulls, Pianka gleefully advocated airborne ebola as his preferred method of exterminating the necessary 90% of humans, choosing it over AIDS because of its faster kill period. Ebola victims suffer the most tortuous deaths imaginable as the virus kills by liquefying the internal organs. The body literally dissolves as the victim writhes in pain bleeding from every orifice.

Pianka then cited the Peak Oil fraud as another reason to initiate global genocide. "And the fossil fuels are running out," he said, "so I think we may have to cut back to two billion, which would be about one-third as many people."

Later, the scientist welcomed the potential devastation of bird flu and spoke glowingly of China's enforced one child policy, before zestfully commenting, "We need to sterilize everybody on the Earth."

At the end of Pianka's speech the audience erupted not to a chorus of boos and hisses but to a raucous reception of applause and cheers as audience members clammered to get close to the scientist to ask him follow up questions. Pianka was later presented with a distinguished scientist award by the Academy. Pianka is no crackpot. He has given lectures to prestigious universities worldwide.

One horrified observer was able to make notes on the speech and our gratitude goes to Forrest M. Mims for bringing this sickening display to the attention of the world.

Throughout history elites have invented justification for barbaric practices as a cover for their true agenda of absolute power and control over populations. Up until the 19th century, the transatlantic slave trade was justified by saying that the practice was biblical and therefore morally redeemable in nature, despite the fact that no such bible passage exists.

From 1932 until 1972, the Tuskegee Study Group (pictured below) deliberately infected poor black communities in Alabama with syphilis without their consent and withheld treatment as the diseased rampaged through the town killing families.

Pianka's doomsday warning of the population bomb, for which Mims claims he presented no evidence whatsoever, is complete pseudo-science. Populations in developed countries are declining and only in third world countries is it expanding dramatically. Industrialization itself levels out population trends and even despite this world population models routinely show that the earth's population will level out at 9 billion in 2050 and slowly decline after that. "The population of the most developed countries will remain virtually unchanged at 1.2 billion until 2050," states a United Nations report. Conservation International's own study revealed that 46% of the earth's surface was an untouched wilderness, that is land areas not including sea. It is commonly accepted that the entire world population could all fit into the state of Texas and each have an acre of their own land.

Think about the magnitude of Pianka's statements. He wants to kill nine out of every ten members of your family and he wants to kill them in one of the most painful and agonizing ways imaginable.

If Pianka, or 'The Lizard Man' as he likes to be called, is so vehement in the necessity of culling the human population will he step forward to be the first one in line? Will he sacrifice his children for the so-called greater good of the planet? We somehow doubt it.

Will the students who so enthusiastically greeted his ideas go home and kill themselves for the cause if it is so righteous?

It was noted how Pianka presented his argument with the kind of glee that you would see in a demented serial killer before dispatching his victim. This is an attitude we have encountered again and again. To discuss killing 90% of the world's population via a horrific plague is sick enough within itself but you would at least expect its advocates to be serious and sober in their approach to the subject. The opposite seems to be the case, where the subject is aired in a context of lighthearted lip-smacking and hand-rubbing as if the individual was about to sink his teeth into a T-bone steak.

This window gives us a clear view of exactly why these deranged bastards encompass this ideology. They love death and their lives are motivated by dark influences very different to you or I.

In the 21st century the elite are concerned that from over 6 billion people might spring a new elite to challenge their stranglehold on the reigns of power. This is one reason for desire to cull the population down to a manageable level. Another is control over the behavior of the existing serfs and herding them like cattle into the slaughter house.

As we have documented, members of the elite are quite open in their feverish lust to commit mass murder and ethnic cleansing. In the foreword to his biography If I Were An Animal, Prince Philip wrote, "In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, in order to contribute something to solve overpopulation."

National Security Memo 200, dated April 24, 1974, and titled "Implications of world wide population growth for U.S. security & overseas interests," says:

"Dr. Henry Kissinger proposed in his memorandum to the NSC that "depopulation should be the highest priority of U.S. foreign policy towards the Third World." He quoted reasons of national security, and because `(t)he U.S. economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less-developed countries ... Wherever a lessening of population can increase the prospects for such stability, population policy becomes relevant to resources, supplies and to the economic interests of U.S."

Kissinger prepared a depopulation manifesto for President Jimmy Carter called 'Global 2000' which detailed using food as a weapon to depopulate the third world.

One of the most chilling admissions of deadly intent came from the lips of the late Jacques Cousteau, the sainted environmental icon. In an interview with the UNESCO Courier for November 1991 the famed oceanographer said:

"The damage people cause to the planet is a function of demographics - it is equal to the degree of development. One American burdens the earth much more than twenty Bangaladeshes. The damage is directly linked to consumption. Our society is turning toward more and needless consumption. It is a vicious circle that I compare to cancer...."

"This is a terrible thing to say. In order to stabilize world population, we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. It is a horrible thing to say, but it's just as bad not to say it."

The Melbourne Age reported on recently uncovered documents detailing Nobel Peace Prize winning microbiologist Sir Macfarlane Burnet's plan to help the Australian government develop biological weapons for use against Indonesia and other "overpopulated" countries of South-East Asia.

Pianka's ideology is in the same league as Hitler, Pol Pot, and the rest of history's despots who advocated mass extermination and had the temerity to dress it up in a 'noble' Straussian facade. The elite have created a religion of genocide and the nation's universities are the churches for the communication of an environmental jihad that threatens to decimate the human species as we know it.

The furore surrounding the comments of Professor Eric R. Pianka, who told a crowd at Arlington UT that 90% of the world population need to be culled to solve overpopulation, have been characterized on the one hand by an expected outrage but on the other by a sycophantic mainstream media who have collaborated to spin the story and obfuscate the real issues.

Pianka's back-peddling and his whimpering cries of protest that if we don't control population then viruses will (unquestionably parroted by a completely bias local NBC news piece) is again ridiculed by the facts, as outlined by Shawn Carlson, Ph.D. in his excellent article.

"The data stand utterly against this idea. Plagues have run rampant through human populations throughout time. Millions have died. Huge fractions of some populations have been wiped out. But the net death rate has never come close to the fractions that Pianka envisions. Virulent diseases that kill quickly tend to burn themselves out. Natural selection creates less lethal varieties because an organism can't spread if it kills its host before it can propagate. The flu pandemic of 1918 (the influenza virus is championed by Pianka) may have killed 50 million people, but that was only about 5 percent of those infected. Moreover, every year sees medical advancements-screening techniques improve, as do our methods of creating new vaccines and treating illness of all kinds."

The Associated Press article and local TV news pieces focused entirely on Pianka's pleas of innocence and whitewashed or completely omitted what he actually said in his speeches. Pianka claims he is merely trying to warn humanity against coming plagues while he snickers in front of a slide of glowing skulls and carries with him an ebola plush toy. If Pianka wants to warn the world as he claimed in the news interview then why were cameramen at his speech asked to turned their cameras off as Pianka told the audience that the world wasn't ready to hear what he had to say? This is a total contradiction and exposes Pianka for the liar he is but the biased self-proclaimed 'journalists' didn't pick up on it.

The establishment press twisted the report to make Pianka seem like the victim. The real story is the fact that 95% of his peers, fellow scientists, professors and students cheered and applauded his public declaration that ebola, a disease that liquefies the internal organs of its victims in a torturous insufferable manner, should be used to kill 90% of humanity.

Universities are like Jim Jones cults and the religion of genocide is the kool aid. Almost uniformly they brainwash an army of impressionable students with the propaganda of population control and mass death. It is important to emphasize that in all our combined experience and canvassing views from friends and family members this subject crops up again and again. The academic elite are obsessed with population reduction and they have trained hundreds of thousands of followers to embrace the same lust for death.

This is the religion of the global architects and it is their manufactured justification to usurp all our freedoms. If we are stripped even of the right to live what will happen to our property, our freedom of speech, our freedom of movement and our right to bear arms?

This is about corporate criminals creating religious ideology for environmentalist technicians to carry out an environmental jihad.

Meanwhile, the real environmental dangers are ignored.

- The unrestrained use of depleted uranium which is poisoning the skies of the war torn Middle East and then drifting westward to infect our skies.

- How genetically modified foods are dangerous to humans and fundamentally affect the food chain.

- Cross cloning of humans and animals to create hybrid chimeras, many in tax-funded Universities, including the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine, a practice that opens the doors to untold bizarre and freakish developments in cloning with no ethical debate whatsoever.

There is a clear crossover between the madcap worlds of ecology and bio-ethics. Princeton University's Peter Singer -- probably the world's most well-known bioethicist, advocates the right of parents to be able to kill their own newborn babies. Singer compares babies to mackerel, writing, "Since neither a newborn infant nor a fish is a person, the wrongness of killing such beings is not as great as the wrongness of killing a person."

Try and imagine the world that Singer is advocating, where parents unhappy with how their baby looks or if it has a minor disability go outside and throw it in the trash as they would food that had passed its sell-by date. Singer is routinely protested in Germany and Austria by family members of Holocaust victims but his speeches in America are usually well received by the academic elite.

Pianka and Singer both owe their allegiance in part to the strata of eugenics, which is defined as the study of hereditary improvement of the human race by controlled selective breeding. Except in this instance Pianka goes a step further, arguing that humans should be sacrificed for the good of mother Earth.

Eugenics was embraced by the Nazis after Adolf Hitler managed to pass a law in 1934 enabling the mass sterilization of anyone the state deemed to be 'feebleminded'. At the same time in the US, 35 states had laws enabling forced sterilization of those considered defective. From the 1920's to the late 1970's, 60,000 to 100,000 people were sterilized across the nation after being termed imbeciles by dubious review panels. People like Singer and Pianka are aiding this anti-human movement gain traction again.

We received an e mail from one of Pianka's followers, Rebecca Calisi, who is a Biology student at Arlington UT.

Betraying the warped and deranged belief system that Calisi has been indoctrinated into, she actually goes a step further and calls for the eradication of not 90% but 100% of humans from planet Earth!

"There is NO DENYING the natural world would be a better place without people - ALL people! Not a selective bunch. Get it straight," rants Calisi.

Of course! There's no denying the fact that wiping out humanity 100% is the sane, rational and reasonable thing to do! The temerity of Calisi to even couch the horror that she is advocating in such sober context is absolutely chilling and sheds light on the cold and calculating mind set of these demons.

"To liken Pianka to Hitler, etc., is the most absurd, ignorant comment anyone could make. He has spent his career trying to PROTECT life," says Calisi.

She is right and we apologize for this error. To liken Pianka to Hitler is being unfair on Hitler because Hitler only said certain people were a disease whereas Pianka says we all are! A closer parallel can be drawn with Charles Manson, as George Ou of ZD Net writes in reference to the Dr. Carlson article,

"After speaking with Dr. Carlson on the phone, Carlson pointed out that Manson who isn't nearly as charismatic as Pianka had his followers killed around 7 people whereas a future "Piankian" would try and kill 5,000,000,000. Dr. Carson also noted that Pianka like Manson technically never advocated anyone's death but that he merely would like to see it happen. The difference between Piankians and Manson's "family" is that the Piankians work in the scientific field with access to potential weapons of mass destruction."

Calisi says that the only people not applauding Pianka at his UT speech were, "moronic creationists, angry that Pianka informed them they are not the "highest" creatures on this planet."

That's strange because unless someone changed the food chain last night it appears that humans are still sitting at the top. The same species that gave us Mozart, Beethoven, the Sistine Chapel, space travel and the Internet.

Calisi even laments that Pianka, a man who once lived in total isolation for 10 years with no human contact, has already come to the understanding that he is ready to sacrifice his own children and grandchildren for the betterment of the planet. This is absolutely sick and yet Calisi relates it as if it's urbane and rational thinking.

This is a clear and present danger to us that outweighs Al-Qaeda, Iran and North Korea combined. Why? Because Dr. Death types across academia and their followers have access to the very weapons of mass destruction that would enable them to enact their 'final solution'. Both UT Arlington and UT Austin have contracts with Sandia National Laboratories which includes research related to "chemical and biological weapons." Openly stating a desire to see 90% of humanity wiped out by means of releasing a bio-weapon and also having access to biological weapons is in our eyes an alarming precedent.

But the federal government isn't interested, preferring instead to use the Patriot Act to harass artists who use harmless bacterial material for exhibitions.

Where is this all leading?

When biological terror reigns down on US cities will Pianka and his ilk, those who openly advocated such a scenario and had the means of implementing it, be subject to investigation? Or will it be blamed on terrorists while everyone is forced into quarantine concentration camps and martial law is declared?

It is on this basis that we are now seriously considering legal action against Pianka and UT. Without divulging our legal strategy, this clear incitement to genocide which a state funded organization is promoting should cease immediately.

Media, colleagues continue to portray him as the innocent victim

The Austin-American Statesman today reports that Dr Eric Pianka, who has been at the center of a media firestorm for wishing death upon 90% of humanity via an airborne ebola bio-attack, today received a visit from the FBI after he was reported as a potential terrorist.

As we and others like ZD Net previously reported, Dr. Death types across academia and their followers have access to the very weapons of mass destruction that would enable them to enact their 'final solution'. Both UT Arlington and UT Austin have contracts with Sandia National Laboratories which includes research related to "chemical and biological weapons." Openly stating a desire to see 90% of humanity wiped out by means of releasing a bio-weapon and also having access to biological weapons is in our eyes an alarming precedent.

In addition, in 2003 biological weapons watchdogs asked the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) to suspend biodefense funding for the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston due to the Medical Branch's secrecy about its research on biological weapons agents and its refusal to comply with federal biosafety guidelines.

It comes as no surprise that, according to the Statesman, hanging on the wall of Pianka's office is a picture of him proudly dressed as Charles Darwin. Dr. Death is a social Darwinist Malthusian who believes in the virtues of eugenics, a movement characterized by forced sterilization in the US, fueled by Carnegie and Rockefeller funding, and responsible for the birth of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. It was Charles Darwin's cousin, Sir Francis Galton, who first brought eugenics to the US at the turn of the last century. According to the San Francisco Chronicle,

"The idea was created in the United States, and cultivated in California, decades before Hitler came to power. California eugenicists played an important, although little-known, role in the American eugenics movement's campaign for ethnic cleansing....Elitists, utopians and so-called progressives fused their smoldering race fears and class bias with their desire to make a better world. They reinvented Galton's eugenics into a repressive and racist ideology. The intent: Populate the Earth with vastly more of their own socioeconomic and biological kind -- and less or none of everyone else. "

This is what Pianka embraced when he told the audience at UT Arlington,

"Smarter people have fewer kids."

He said those who don't have a conscience about the Earth will inherit the Earth, "...because those who care make fewer babies and those that didn't care made more babies." He said we will evolve as uncaring people, and "I think IQs are falling for the same reason, too."

We have highlighted cases where under the sterilization program in the US, which ran until 1979, people like Ruth Morris were forcibly sterilized, used as guinea pigs in medical experiments, and denied the opportunity ever to have children because the state deemed their IQ not to be high enough. Virginia Governor Mark Warner had to publicly apologize for the program in 2002.

The practice continues to this day in China, a model which Pianka advocated when he said that the one child policy, enforced by a brutal police state, was a good thing.

Pianka and his ilk have embraced a new form of eugenics that forms a crossroads with ecology. Whereas the pioneers of eugenics like Margaret Sanger and Hitler discussed racial hygiene, Pianka professes the need for global hygiene and the disease is human beings.

One of Pianka's followers states on her own blog, "He's a radical thinker, that one! I mean, he's basically advocating for the death of all but 10% of the current population! And at the risk of sounding just as radical, I think he's right."

"It's the harsh reality that many people alive right now should be dead. And even harsher to think that the world would be better off with them dead too," writes 'Serenity'.

After lamenting how her own grandparents should be dead, she then goes on to echo Pianka's eugenics stance in stating, "An insightful observation was made during the talk that education should be the key to learning how to take care of the Earth, but the problem is that the educated have fewer children and the uneducated have many children. So eventually, the uneducated will take over the Earth. It may have already happened."

Again, the acceptance of this kind of rhetoric is exactly why Hitler was able to pursue his nightmare vision of the super race, where only the strong and enlightened ones chosen by the the state would have the right to live.

These sick bastards have the nerve to couch their feverish pro-death rants in the context that they're lovingly caring for the planet and that they're actually pro-life! The disconnect and duality of this insanity is difficult to behold.

In addition, another Biology student and supporter of Pianka, Rebecca Calisi (pictured below), mirrored this Nazi ideology when she expressed her loathsome desire that the world would be a better place with every single human being dead!

"There is NO DENYING the natural world would be a better place without people - ALL people! Not a selective bunch. Get it straight," wrote Calisi.

And the Associated Press and local NBC news make out as if we're the radicals here for pointing out that killing off the entire human race with biological weapons is wrong!

if Pianka started barbecuing babies in the UT cafeteria and we opposed it, would Pianka be portrayed as the victim and us as the extremists?

The Statesman article quotes one of Pianka's colleagues David Hillis, who defends him by saying that Pianka, "has such a passion for life and diversity. How anyone could paint him as pro-death is unbelievable."

The man who said AIDS didn't kill people fast enough for his liking is not pro-death? The man who supports China's brutally enforced one child policy is not pro-death? The man who said he was "looking forward to the collapse" after a disease controls "the scourge of humanity" is not pro-death? The man who proudly displays an ebola plush toy on his front desk is not pro-death? Did we just enter the twilight zone here?

"Pianka said [he] only meant to warn about the potential for epidemics in the face of uncontrolled population growth," states the article. If it was meant as a warning then why did Pianka order the cameras to be shut off before his speech and why did he say that the general public was not yet ready for what he had to say? If it was meant as a sober warning then why did 95% of his students and peers jump to their feet and raucously applause him at the end of it?

Dr. Death and his drooling disciples should not be allowed to incite genocide and promote Nazi models of eugenics without encountering resistance. We do not in any way advocate death threats or intimidation towards Mr. Pianka or any of his students. However, the repugnant response of the establishment media has been to soft-peddle the story and paint Pianka as the victim. This is exactly why we will continue to challenge and counter monsters whose ideals if acted upon would result in the indiscriminate slaughter of our entire families.

journalist Seymour Hersh) using nuclear-armed B61-11
�bunker-busters.�

Bush will do this �to prevent [Iran] acquiring its own
atomic warheads,� the UK Telegraph summarizes Hersh�s
conclusion.

Hersh claims that one of the plans, presented to the
White House by the Pentagon, entails the use of a
bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the
B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One alleged
target is Iran�s main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, 200
miles south of Teheran.

It is interesting to note that the very development of
the B61-11 is a violation of the NPT, the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and international law
dating back to the Clinton administration, thus once
again illustrating the fact the neocons don�t have a
monopoly on criminal renegade behavior.

"In addition to the immediate effects of blast, air
shock, and thermal radiation, shallow nuclear
explosions produce especially intense local
radioactive fallout,� explains Nelson of FAS.

�The fireball breaks through the surface of the earth,
carrying into the air large amounts of dirt and
debris.

This material has been exposed to the intense neutron
flux from the nuclear detonation, which adds to the
radioactivity from the fission products.

The cloud typically consists of a narrow column and a
broad base surge of air filled with radioactive dust
which expands to a radius of over a mile for a 5
kiloton explosion.�

Routine contingency planning goes on all the time in
the Pentagon, but the discussions on Iran seem to have
progressed beyond this level,

with high administration officials pushing the process
and dropping indirect hints of possible future
American military action in language that sometimes
recalls statements made before the invasion of Iraq.

The Washington Post reports that two main options are
being seriously considered - a limited strike against
Iranian nuclear-related sites or a broader campaign
against a wider range of military and political
targets.

The planners are also looking at ways America could
use tactical nuclear weapons to penetrate Iran's
heavily reinforced underground uranium enrichment
complex at Natanz.

The British government is said to take Washington's
planning exercises seriously enough to have worked out
security arrangements for its own diplomats and
citizens in the event of American air attacks...

Years of frustrating diplomacy have not managed to
deflect Iran's nuclear ambitions, but American
airstrikes are not likely to either. The best they
could hope to achieve is delay, but that result would
be far outweighed by the likely consequences.

An American bombing campaign would surely rally the
Iranian people behind the radical Islamic government
and the nuclear program,

with those effects multiplied exponentially if the
Pentagon itself resorted to nuclear weapons in the
name of trying to stop Iran from building nuclear
bombs.

THE Pentagon has secret plans for a "remote control"
blitz on Iran if it does not comply with demands to
curb its nuclear programme.

Dozens of targets, including nuclear complexes deep
underground, would be destroyed by bunker-busting
cruise missiles.

And assassinations of key personnel working on the
installations are planned using Hellfire rockets fired
from unmanned Predator planes.

The Mirror learned details of the plans yesterday as
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw dismissed reports that
Iran will be attacked with nuclear weapons by the US.

He said: "The idea of a nuclear strike is completely
nuts."

A British intelligence source with close links to US
intelligence also ruled it out. He told the Mirror:

"The nuclear option will have been considered among
many other options for a strike.

"But while a nuclear strike may have been considered
that does not mean it is going to happen."

It would be "technically the best and most efficient
way of eradicating" underground bunkers but "the
decision was made early on in the planning that this
is politically totally unacceptable".

US intelligence and military came up with the highly
surgical "remote attack" plan involving no foreign
forces inside Iran.

The three day blitz was planned in the past six months
by a small unit in the Defence Department.

Missiles would be fired from B52 bombers and secret US
air bases in neutral Gulf states such as Qatar.

And by next year the US may have new 30,000lb bunker
busters, dubbed Big Blu, capable of penetrating 100ft
underground.

It would be the first air attack in the region without
involvement of US or British special forces.

The source said:

"This is a new move in the war against terror - the
most surgical and clinical strike against a threat
ever undertaken. The technocrats pushing the button
with the military have worked hard trying to ensure we
are as clean as you can be in removing the threat.

"That is the latest plan on the table and it could
very well happen if diplomacy does not work.

"The military technocrats believe it is the best way
of destroying Iran's facilities and causing least
disruption and conflict in the region."

But it would go ahead only if Iran continues to refuse
to comply with international calls for a halt to its
nuclear programme. Iran was referred to the UN
Security Council after failing to convince the world
its atomic scientists are working only on power
stations, not weapons.

The Security Council demanded that Iran stop uranium
enrichment and told the watchdog International Atomic
Energy Agency to report on whether it had complied.
IAEA experts arrived last week to inspect enrichment
and reprocessing plants.

A US spokesman called reports of the blitz plan
"ill-informed" but stopped short of outright denial.
Mr Straw said the UK would not strike Iran and he was
as "certain as he could be" that neither would the US
- there was "no smoking gun" and therefore no
justification.

He said President Bush and Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice were "very committed indeed to
resolving this issue by negotiation and by diplomatic
pressure".

But while they said military action was not on the
agenda "they don't rule out any option in theory about
their position".

Alex Jones yesterday interviewed Dr Forrest M. Mims, III, the Editor of Citizen Scientist Magazine and Chairman of the Environmental Science Section of the Texas Academy of Science. The discussion centered around the controversial University of Texas professor who advocates the mass death of 90% of the world's human population.

Dr. Eric R. Pianka gave a speech to the Texas Academy of Science last month in which he advocated the need to exterminate 90% of the population through the airborne ebola virus. Pianka's chilling comments, and their enthusiastic reception again underscore the elite's agenda to enact horrifying measures of population control.

Standing in front of a slide of human skulls, Pianka gleefully advocated airborne ebola as his preferred method of exterminating the necessary 90% of humans, choosing it over AIDS because of its faster kill period. Ebola victims suffer the most tortuous deaths imaginable as the virus kills by liquefying the internal organs. The body literally dissolves as the victim writhes in pain bleeding from every orifice.

Pianka was later presented with a distinguished scientist award by the Academy. Pianka is no crackpot. He has given lectures to prestigious universities worldwide.

The reason he is being awarded is because he is simply espousing the views that have been put forward by UN agencies such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), WHO and UNICEF and international NGO's such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation, as well as The US Government for the last 35 years.

We have previously documented the elite's hideous interest in depopulation techniques, an interest that mirrors the nightmare eugenics visions of Nazi scientists in the 1940s.

Pianka suggests that we should begin to sterilize the human population now, a call that has previously been put forward by Henry Kissinger in a declassified document of the National Security Council (1974) entitled "The Implications of World-wide Population Growth on the Security and External Interests of the United States".

This document lists as a priority birth-rate control in 13 key countries in the Third World, especially in South America. Extraordinary resources were allotted to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement the policy of birth-rate control.

It also contains sections entitled:

Creating Conditions Conducive to Fertility Decline, which calls for, amongst other things, "reducing infant and child mortality"

Concentration on Education and Indoctrination of The Rising Generation of Children Regarding the Desirability of Smaller Family Size

Utilization of Mass Media and Satellite Communications Systems for Family Planning

The memorandum also includes a section that lauds abortion and states that " -- It would be unwise to restrict abortion research for the following reasons: 1) The persistent and ubiquitous nature of abortion. 2) Widespread lack of safe abortion techniques..."

The memorandum basically stresses the need to offer increased aid for third world countries that agree to implement programs of sterilization and depopulation.

Kissinger also prepared a depopulation manifesto for President Jimmy Carter called 'Global 2000' which detailed using food as a weapon to depopulate the third world.

The United Nations Population Fund directly supports policies such as that of the "one child policy" in Communist China which encapsulates coercive and enforced abortion.

In 2002 Secretary of State Colin Powell stated in a letter to Congress:

"Regrettably, the PRC has in place a regime of severe penalties on women who have unapproved births. This regime plainly operates to coerce pregnant women to have abortions in order to avoid the penalties and therefore amounts to a 'program of coercive abortion.' Regardless of the modest size of UNFPA's budget in China or any benefits its programs provide, UNFPA's support of, and involvement in, China's population-planning activities allows the Chinese government to implement more effectively its program of coercive abortion."

Yet The UNPFA seem to think this is a great thing

"China has had the most successful family planning policy in the history of mankind in terms of quantity and with that, China has done mankind a favour," United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative Sven Burmester said last week. -10/11/99 Agence France-Presse

Under the Regan Administration legislation sponsored by then-Rep. Jack Kemp (NY) and then-Sen. Bob Kasten (WI) ensured funding to the UNPFA was cut off for these very reasons. Yet is was no surprise when In 1993, the Clinton Administration dramatically revised the official interpretation of the "Kemp-Kasten amendment" in order to facilitate U.S. funding of UNFPA, thus making available $14.5 million.

In May 2003, the House Committee on International Relations narrowly adopted an an amendment by Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY) revoking the ban on such participation with the UNPFA. The amendment earmarked $100 million for UNFPA over the next two years.

There are countless other instances of depopulation programs, too numerous to go into in this brief article. We urge our readers to research them and expose them further.

Dr Pianka's comments are merely echoes of the elite lust for a Malthusian social Darwinist control mechanism. They wish to use the excuse of having to "save the earth" in order to take away freedom and implement a massive authoritarian control grid.

Amazingly the audience of fellow scientists and students present at Dr Pianka's presentation in Texas actually applauded, cheered and laughed approvingly.

Dr Forrest Mims, who has been valiantly trying to expose Pianka's hideous calls, commented that he wrote to Pianka - or "Dr Death" as he has been dubbed - and asked for an explanation as to why he wanted to see a worldwide epidemic that would only kill Africans. Pianka responded by saying he was not racially prejudice and wanted to see 90% of all races exterminated.

"He wants an equal opportunity killer virus" Mims said.

Mims further quoted Pianka as having said that "We need to sterilize everybody on the earth and make the antidote freely available to anyone willing to work for it".

According to Mims, Pianka also praised China's "one child policy" stating that "China was able to turn the corner and become the leading world super power because they have a police state and they are able to force people to stop re-producing."

"The only difference between Pianka and Hitler is that Hitler stated he wanted to kill five and a half million people, this guy is saying he wants to kill five and a half billion people." Mims went on to say.

Mims also revealed that at another lecture, Pianka had a cuddly toy,much like the one pictured below, shaped like the ebola virus which he fawned over.

As stated in yesterday's article however, Pianka's doomsday warning of the population bomb, for which Mims claims he presented no evidence whatsoever, is complete pseudo-science. Populations in developed countries are declining and only in third world countries is it expanding dramatically. Industrialization itself levels out population trends and even despite this world population models routinely show that the earth's population will level out at 9 billion in 2050 and slowly decline after that. "The population of the most developed countries will remain virtually unchanged at 1.2 billion until 2050," states a United Nations report. The UN population policies seem to be in direct contradiction to THEIR OWN FINDINGS.

Conservation International's own study revealed that 46% of the earth's surface was an untouched wilderness, that is land areas not including sea. It is commonly accepted that the entire world population could all fit into the state of Texas and each have an acre of their own land.

Once a country industrializes there is an average of a 1.6 child rate per household, so the western world population is actually in decline. That trend has also been witnessed in areas of Asia like Japan and South Korea. The UN has stated that the population will peak at 9 billion and then begin declining.

In his attempts to alert the world to Pianka, Mims approached the Associated Press who spiked the story despite it being extremely newsworthy.

The story was picked up by Jamie Mobley of the The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise, yet when Mims produced this article to the AP they responded with the comment:

"We can't carry such an important story if it is just done by a small time newspaper"

Mims stressed that "These people are part of the dark ages of the media, they need to realize that it is the radio and the web that are carrying the ball. The newspapers are way behind the times, the Associated Press said they would call today, they have not called."

Today the AP has produced an article that completely distorts the reality of what Dr "Death" Pianka has been lecturing about.

The AP suggests that Pianka has back-peddled and said that he was only trying to warn against epidemic occurring due to overpopulation completely. This contradicts his clear statement that airborne ebola should be used to eliminate 90% of the human population. He is not warning against a disease epidemic, he is advocating one and the Associated Press has displayed yellow journalism in not pointing out this disconnect.

The AP states:

A University of Texas biology professor has been targeted by talk radio, bloggers and vitriolic e-mails - including a death threat - after a published report that he advocated death for most of the population as a means of saving the Earth.

This is NOT the story, the story is that the man WANTS TO KILL 90% OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET.

Forrest Mims, pictured above, ended the interview by warning that if indeed the students of Pianka agree with his views, they could become scientists in the future and seriously research and hope to implement such policies.

Mims cited that the 1918 flu virus that caused a mass epidemic has recently been re-created. There are also other MORE DEADLY viruses in existence in labs across the world. If someone wanted to release these in order to "save the world" they wouldn't have to spend years creating the means to do it.

Mims ended the interview by warning that if indeed the students of Pianka agree with his views, they could become scientists in the future and seriously research and hope to implement such policies.

Mims stated that he is "deeply disturbed" with the scientific community:

"I interviewed the student who became a convert to this for 45 minutes and sir, you are absolutely correct, there are people out there who are willing to do this"

Tenpenny: In essence, "bird flu" is caused by a specific version of influenza type A virus thought by researchers to be particularly aggressive. Influenza A subtypes are designated as either "mildly pathogenic," meaning they cause minimal or no disease, or "highly pathogenic," meaning their presence has been associated with widespread death among birds.

Influenza A viruses are divided into subtypes based on different combinations of two surface proteins called antigens. One is called "hemagglutinin," signified by the abbreviation (H) or (HA); the other is called "neuraminidase," identified as (N) or (NA). Fifteen different H antigens (referred to as H1 to H15) and nine different N proteins (referred as to N1 to N9) are commonly known to exist; all combinations of (H) antigens and (N) antigens are known to exist in birds.

The virus of current concern is H5N1, considered to be a "highly pathogenic" type. Nearly 100 people have died worldwide, reportedly due to the inflammatory effects this virus seems to have on lung tissue.

Scientists are concerned that H5N1 will evolve into a virus capable of human-to-human transmission (a characteristic not presently associated with the H5N1 virus) and lead to an influenza pandemic.

Harkins: Are migratory birds responsible for the spread of the H5N1 virus?

Tenpenny: Because they travel over great distances and a few dead birds have tested positive for the H5N1 virus, migratory birds are being blamed as the vector for transmitting the virus far and wide. However, actual migratory patterns of bird species through the flyways are not known. The theory is not well supported as outbreaks have not coincided with the arrival of the migratory birds to specific areas. As stated succinctly by author Wendy Orent in The LA Times, "Sick birds don�t fly far and dead birds don�t fly at all."

Most importantly, a growing number of scientists are coming forward stating that the spread of H5N1 by migratory birds is, essentially, nonsense. In fact, claims that the recent outbreak in Nigeria was caused by migratory birds has been refuted and is now said to be caused by illegally-imported day-old chickens.

Harkins: Is the H5N1 virus a new virus or has it been around for a long time?

Tenpenny: H5N1 has been identified in domestic fowl before. The first outbreak of an H5N1 bird flu was recorded by the WHO in 1959 in Scotland and then in 1991 in England. More recent outbreaks were identified in Hong Kong in chickens in 1997 and 2002. All of the influenza A viruses are known to exist in the intestines of wild birds symbiotically and asymptomatically. This virus, which has been around a long time, is being used to advance political and mega-corporate agendas.

Harkins: What are those "political and corporate" agendas?

Tenpenny: It appears that the lobbying power of pharmaceutical companies and the global poultry and egg-producing companies have influenced the development of the bird flu scare. The world is being convinced that the H5N1 virus will mutate so that it can spread from human-to-human. The corporate benefit to the pharmaceutical companies is selling billions of dollars worth of drugs and vaccines. The huge, multinational poultry producers will survive the costs associated with the mass killing of their factory-farmed, genetically-modified birds while most small poultry producers will be forced out of business and into servitude to multinational agribusiness. Politically, bird-flu hysteria will allow governments to grow as they develop new schemes to regulate entire industries, implement mass vaccination programs and put into operation police states as a consequence of the predicted pandemic.

Harkins: If the truth about avian flu were known, how do you think the world would respond?

Tenpenny: That is an interesting question. If people understood how illness develops and what determines the severity of symptoms, they would not have an irrational fear of bird flu. They would know how to build their immunity through diet and lifestyle and be confident they could properly treat the flu if they got sick. They would also realize that vaccines do not prevent diseases. If the prevailing belief about health and disease were based upon the comments I just made, people would begin to wonder why both migratory and factory farmed birds in certain locations throughout the world are becoming so sick. They would begin to suspect that environmental exposures to chemicals and conditions within the vertically-integrated poultry production practices may be the root cause of the avian flu.

If governments responded appropriately to the will of well-informed people, they would enforce policies intended to protect the people and birds from avian flu by placing strict regulations on the use and disposal of toxic chemicals. In addition, they would order the immediate reform of corporate poultry production practices.

Harkins: What you are saying is that the underlying cause of birds becoming sick with H5N1 is the level of chemicals present in their bodies. If the world understood the relevance of this, we would not be faced with the task of euthanizing millions of birds and vaccinating millions of adults and children. The community of nations would instead be challenged to clean up the toxic chemicals in the environment and reform poultry farming practices.

Tenpenny: That is correct.

Harkins: Those are pretty bold statements. What research have you done to support those claims?

Tenpenny: For the last year I have been on a "connect-the-dots" adventure as I have reviewed hundreds of seemingly unconnected scientific papers, medical reports and newspaper articles. It took awhile but, eventually, patterns began to emerge. My research was guided by two main questions: Who benefits the most from all the dead, rural chickens and why is this concentrated in humans living in Asia? With these two questions always in the back of my mind, the pieces began falling into place.

Harkins: The majority of reported cases of bird flu in humans has been reported from Vietnam. Is there a reason for that, or is it just a coincidence?

Tenpenny: I have been able to show that clusters of reported cases of human avian flu in Vietnam appear to fall where the U.S. military concentrated it�s spraying of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. From 1964 until the war officially ended on August 15, 1973, 6.1 billion tons of explosives were detonated throughout Southeast Asia, including more than 19 million liters of herbicides containing the most toxic form of dioxin, TCDD. The chemical that received the most attention was Agent Orange, identified by the color of the stripe painted on the barrel. Little known is that the area was also sprayed with other horrific chemicals�Agent Blue, Agent White, Agent Purple and Agent Pink, all containing dioxin.

Research has confirmed that even trace amounts of TCDD�only two to three parts per trillion (ppt)�are extremely toxic in laboratory animals. More than 30 years later, dioxin continues to be persistent in the food chain, causing potentially deadly contamination of wildlife. In subsurface soil, dioxin has a great affinity for organic matter and remains unchanged, virtually forever. Its persistence in the soil of riverbanks makes it particularly toxic to waterfowl.

Canadian researchers have found dioxin levels in soil collected throughout different regions of southern Vietnam to be as high as 898 ppt. But the most extreme levels of dioxin contamination were found in the area of Bien Hung Lake, formerly Saigon, where dioxin levels were measured to be greater than 1.1 million ppt.

It has long been presumed that death due to influenza is a result of rampant proliferation of viruses that overwhelm the capacity of the body to respond. In other words, the immune system is so significantly compromised that the virus "takes over," rampantly replicating and killing the host. Interestingly, studies have determined that this is not the case. For an influenza illness to result in death requires the presence of additional components. Pertinent to our discussion here, a study in mice conducted by Luebke (2002) examined fluid extracted directly from the lungs of deceased mice. The results proved that the increased mortality seen in TCDD-exposed mice was due to the intense inflammatory action of dioxin.

In other words, the combination of an influenza infection and dioxin caused so much inflammation in the lungs�that even normal lung tissue was destroyed, leading to the death of the mice.

Considering that food for waterfowl�which includes shore grasses, algae, and other aquatic plants, small fish, tadpoles, and insects�readily absorbs chemicals from the environment, dioxin and other persistent organic pollutants, or "POPs" (such as dibenzofurans, hexachlorobenzine, DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls) can progress through the food chain and accumulate in the fat of birds. A reasonable assumption can be made that migratory birds have bioaccumulated dioxin in concentrations similar to those measured in the fat of domestic ducks where dioxin levels have been tested to be between 276 ppt and 331 ppt.

Harkins: Would you say that the concentration of dioxin and possibly other POPs in the tissues of migratory birds and waterfowl is the most decisive factor that will determine which birds will die of H5N1?

Tenpenny: Yes. Even though "safe" levels in animal muscle should be less than 0.1 ppt, dioxin has been shown to disrupt the immune system at concentrations as low as 1.0 ppt. The research is clear: If migratory birds�as well as domestic chickens and ducks�are sickened by H5N1, then their mortality rate due to their dioxin-laden tissues doubles. That�s based on several research articles published over the last several years in the Journal of Toxicological Sciences.

Harkins: Does that also mean that the levels of toxic chemicals in the tissues of humans could determine the severity of symptoms they will experience when they get sick?

Tenpenny: There are many variables, of course, such as lifestyles, diets, genetic strengths and weaknesses and the type of care one receives when he is ill, but the research suggests that the greater the toxic burden being carried by people, the more likely the symptoms of an illness will be severe or even fatal. I am in the process of investigating where people can have their chemical burden levels tested at a reasonable cost. Hopefully, this information will be available in the next several months.

Harkins: Besides toxic chemicals, are there any other environmental contaminants associated with bird flu?

Tenpenny: The Tibetan Plateau is the planet�s largest and highest plateau. It is home to the 14 highest peaks in the world, all over 26,000 feet and the ten major rivers flowing from its glaciers, sustaining 85 percent of Asia�s population�47 percent of the world�s population. With Asia so heavily dependent upon Tibet for its water, nuclear-related pollutants dumped into its lakes have massive implications for nations downstream. Lake Kokonor, a 135,000 square acre lake on the plateau, is a watershed that eventually becomes the Yellow River, one of the two largest rivers in all of China. A survey completed in 1994 found that only 32 percent of China�s river water met the national standards for drinking water. The health of these water systems determines the survival of most inhabitants�human, animal, and bird�throughout China and Southeast Asia.

Adding to the menu of toxic chemicals that weaken the immune systems of birds, particularly migratory birds, is exposure to radioactive particles. Like dioxin, radiation�in the form of radionuclides�can pass up the food chain from sediments into wild birds. Weeds and other algae have a remarkable capacity to concentrate radionuclides up to 100,000 times the levels found in the water. Large populations of migratory birds have died at Lake Kokonor, quite possibly due to its waters being contaminated with radionuclides from nuclear weapons production facilities located on its shores. Couple this with the toxic chemicals the birds consume during the summer in Southeast Asia and it is no wonder that the birds are sick.

Though it is too early to know for sure, we can predict that the U.S. military machine will be connected to increasing the risk of bird flu by its exploding tons of depleted uranium-coated munitions in former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq. This horrific avenue of investigation was extremely enlightening and I have detailed these revelations in my book.

Harkins: We have been hearing about hundreds of thousands of domestic fowl being euthanized to prevent the spread of avian flu. What could be causing avian influenza among birds being raised for their meat and eggs?

Tenpenny: Until conducting research for this topic, I had never considered what happens to these creatures during their short, genetically-modified lifespan. There are no words to express the horror that modern poultry production factories really are. These genetically-modified birds are packed in tiny cages where they are scientifically manipulated for accelerated growth. A report from the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture puts the rapid growth rate of today�s chickens into perspective: "If a [human] grew as fast as a [genetically-modified] chicken, you would weigh 349 pounds at age two."

They are in pain because their muscles (meat) grow so fast their skeletons and internal organs cannot keep up. Under natural conditions in the 1950s, it took 84 days to raise a five-pound chicken. Today, due to genetic engineering and growth-enhancement drugs, a chicken can reach market weight in as little as 45 days. During their short lives, they are repeatedly vaccinated, given hormones and fed chemically-treated food in houses where the lights never go out. The air they breathe is saturated with ammonia from their accumulated feces.

Since bird flu is a respiratory illness and; since the air these GM chickens are forced to breathe is so loaded with ammonia, is it any wonder that modern factory chicken farms are breeding grounds for highly-pathogenic influenza viruses? One thing is for sure�a cut and wrapped package of chicken looks a lot different once you understand how they got to the grocery store. If agribusiness has its way, all the chickens available for consumption will be patented organisms raised in vertically-integrated industrial farms and the supply of poultry products people consume will be their intellectual property.

Harkins: And all this is cited and referenced in your book?

Tenpenny: Yes�in great detail. Once you piece all this together you find that the true causes and real effects can be readily illustrated. But the truth is far different than what we are being told about bird flu. I have carefully�and painstakingly�documented every important point so others may duplicate the data to determine for themselves if my observations and interpretations are accurate.

Harkins: If the truth is in plain sight, do you think that people will continue to believe the bird flu hype?

Tenpenny: The global bird flu scare is not simply a natural reaction to reports that a virus can "jump species" and infect humans. The world is being conditioned to expect the worst. So they will be ready to accept mass vaccinations as the most "responsible" means of protecting public health. Everything we are being told about bird flu and every element of the campaign is designed to frighten people. I call this the "New Playbook."

Harkins: The new playbook?

Tenpenny: Yes. In 2004 the CDC devised a plan for ramping up sales of the flu shot. The plan was referred to as the "Seven Step Recipe for Generating Interest In and Demand For Flu (or any other) Vaccination." The plan is designed to promote the economic success of the season�s flu campaign by using major media to convince people that the flu is deadly and to believe that getting a flu shot is the only way to survive. The plan has been used so effectively that the masses have demanded flu shots and have demanded that government makes sure that industry produces sufficient supplies of flu vaccine.

The plan has not been as effective this year. Sales of flu vaccine were down in 2005 and people were not standing in line to make sure they got their shot like they did in 2004. When the plan was initiated in early 2005 to hype the bird flu, people just didn�t get very excited. Perhaps they remembered the SARS hype in 2003 and reasoned that there is no cause for alarm since the social, political and economic consequences of preparing for a SARS pandemic that never happened were too costly.

The CDC needed a "new plan" to make people take the threat of bird flu more seriously and to compel government officials to appropriate massive amounts of money to develop an entire spectrum of pandemic preparedness activities. Enter "risk communication" and the new playbook.

Risk communication is a field that has evolved from several different fields of study such as health education, public relations, and psychology. A plan for communicating the "international risk" of bird flu has led to the development of a new 10-step "recipe" crafted by Princeton-based risk communication experts Peter M. Sandman, Ph.D, and his spouse, Jody Lanard, MD, a psychiatrist. In brief, the 10 steps, which can be found online at www.psandman.com, are:

1) Start where your audience is. In other words, turn the public�s lack of concern into serious concern by first bonding with it. Do not tell them answers, lead them to conclusions and then talk about how much more serious the next flu pandemic may be compared with the annual flu.

2) Don�t be afraid to frighten people. The plan acknowledges that "�we cannot frighten people enough about H5N1" and "the research evidence that [fear appeals] work is overwhelming."

3) Acknowledge uncertainty. Uncertainty feeds fear. Admitting that there is so much about bird flu that is still a mystery will help encourage fear for the unknown.

4) Share dilemmas. In crisis communication, the goal is to humanize organizations and create empathetic bonds with the public. This way, a feeling that "we are all on the same team" is fostered and, the playbook states, "�dilemma sharing reduces the outrage if you turn out to be wrong."

5) Give people something to do. Fear is not enough�people�s energies must be directed so they have a physical, as well as emotional, investment in the avian flu scare. This step was recently employed by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt�with humorous results. Leavitt advised people to prepare for the avian flu by buying extra cans of tuna and powdered milk and storing them under their beds. This was similar to the silly suggestion that we should go out and purchase quantities of plastic and duct tape in case of an anthrax attack.

6) Be willing to speculate�responsibly. Floating ideas of what could happen helps to feed imaginations already running away with fear.

7) Don�t get caught in the numbers game. This is an interesting concept intended to help spokespersons avoid making statements that dissidents can use to damage the credibility of their claims. It is analogous to boxer Muhammed Ali�s "rope-a-dope" strategy.

8) Stress magnitude more than probability. An emphasis of step 6, fueling people�s imaginations so they can hype their own irrational fears is good for the bird flu business.

9) Guide the adjustment reaction. Steps 6-9 are used to facilitate step 2. Step 9 is designed to take the worried masses, compound their fear and compel them to take actions such as storing food and water. Another priority of the plan is to encourage the public to demand the stockpiling of drugs and vaccines and to convince people that preparing for a pandemic is a civic duty.

10) Aim for total candor and transparency. Again, an emphasis on making people feel like they are part of the team; the government is made up of humans who make mistakes and that we all must work together if we are to survive the coming disaster. We really have to wonder if the government, backed by special interest money, can really be candid and transparent.

Harkins: That is a very comprehensive plan. Now that it has been spelled out for us, we can look and listen to bird flu hype and understand what the government is saying and the media is reporting.

Tenpenny: That is true. This is not objective reporting of avian flu news as it develops, but part of a methodical process to get people to accept the "official" explanation for bird flu. The government�s pandemic preparedness activities (and expenditures) and its plans to deal with the emergency when it arrives�including quite possibly mandatory vaccinations�are being implemented with the anticipation of minimal resistance.

Harkins: In June, 2004, the city of Sandpoint, Idaho, hosted a live smallpox epidemic rehearsal and members of the public who participated were treated to a free bag lunch. Witnesses reported that the police powers of the state were also rehearsing that day. The Bonner Daily Bee, the daily newspaper in Sandpoint, explained that dress rehearsals of this kind were being staged all over the country. Have you heard about them?

Tenpenny: Yes. It�s this concept of practicing for disaster that is embodied in step 5 of the new playbook. Practicing for disaster is meant to give a "sense of empowerment," to the people though it may have little practical value. The images of school children hiding under their desks during nuclear drills and their parents� building bomb shelters in the 1950s comes to mind.

Harkins: But it also appears that these drills do have practical value�they help police to prepare for a state of martial law while helping people become used to the idea that they will have no civil rights if and when the government declares such a medical emergency.

Let�s talk about the issue central to the new playbook�s goals: Getting people to accept that mandatory vaccination will be the only way to stop a pandemic once it begins. Current flu vaccines are grown in chicken eggs and contain mercury as a preservative. Do you know how this pandemic vaccine will be made and what will be in it?

Tenpenny: Egg-based influenza vaccine manufacture has been around for more than 50 years. But it is a slow process, taking about eight months per batch.

To increase the amount of vaccine that can be made quickly, a new "cell line" technology is being developed. The candidates in the running include PER.C6�, made from the retina of aborted human fetal tissue; FluBlok�, made from caterpillars; and MDCK cells, extracted from dog kidneys. The FDA [Food and Drug Administration] has admitted through an internal memo that these tissues could contain viral contaminants that could cause cancer.

Even worse, the FDA admits that these cell lines could theoretically be contaminated with "TSE agents (transmissible spongiform encephalopathy)" the equivalent of mad cow disease in humans. In a study published in 2004, researchers found that any cell line could potentially support the propagation of TSE agents.

Harkins: That�s incredible. So our own FDA is fully aware of the potential ramifications of forcing the entire population to be injected with a new flu vaccine that has been rushed to market prior to being thoroughly tested. And, yet, our government agencies are moving forward with their "playbook." But how concerned should we be about the potential of contracting the H5N1 virus? Is there a possibility of this virus overwhelming the immune system?

Tenpenny: Actually, the H5N1 virus doesn�t seem to stimulate a very strong response from the immune system. It takes 12 times the normal "dose" of the virus to generate the same type of antibody response induced by the annual flu shot. To boost the response, manufacturers are planning to add an adjuvant. The most likely candidate is MF59, the squalene-based adjuvant found in the anthrax vaccine given to our military. Many researchers such as Pam Asa, MD, and Gary Matsumoto have attributed the debilitating autoimmune diseases seen in Gulf War I and II veterans to the varying levels of squalene found in the anthrax vaccines administered to our troops. Research has shown that when only 10 to 20 parts per billion of squalene are injected into humans, destructive immune responses, such as autoimmune arthritis and lupus, occur.

Harkins: Among the immune system-compromising toxins you mentioned was radiation. The western world is subjecting itself to unprecedented daily doses of radiation in the use of wireless computers, cellular telephones and the sudden proliferation of radio frequency ID chips. Would you say that the bodies of those living in the west and the Middle East are being prepped for becoming suitable hosts for pandemic illness?

Tenpenny: Though I have my own opinions, I have not found any data to support a claim that "governments of the western world are chemically-contaminating and irradiating people to prepare them for becoming bird flu statistics." But, the relationship between chemical burdens, radiation exposure and the severity of symptoms when exposed to influenza has already been documented. We also know that the truth about bird flu is being withheld from people so they will remain ignorant, fearful and misinformed about how they can decrease their vulnerability to severe illness should they become sick. If chemical and radiation exposures are not "intentional prep work", then they can be considered an unintended consequence.

Harkins: If environmental toxicity and contamination is the problem, what is the solution?

Tenpenny: The first Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), held in Argentina in May, 2001, was convened to address POPs that are (1) intentionally produced, such as pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides; (2) intentionally produced but restricted in use, such as DDT for control of malaria; and (3) unintentionally produced and released, such as dioxins from herbicides and from burning plastics. An international treaty, which went into force in May 2004, was developed to reduce and eventually eliminate a group of chemicals coined as the "Dirty Dozen" by the United Nations Environmental Program. As consumers of these toxic chemicals we must encourage the enforcement of this treaty and other such laws by minimizing and, eventually, eliminating our use of these substances.

Harkins: Dr. Tenpenny, I believe we have gotten the attention of our readers and see the logic of your reasoning, but we are now more concerned about the apocalyptic implications of what bird flu really is: The chemical age coming home to roost on a wireless perch. Aside from encouraging people to seek out the book when it�s released in mid-April, what thoughts would you like to leave them with, keeping in mind that many of our readers have a solid understanding of health and the human frame?

Tenpenny: I would like to encourage people to seek out food suppliers who do not engage in factory or chemical farming practices or raise genetically-modified food�plant or animal. It is my opinion that plants and animals need natural environments. The food we raise has always required natural environments in which to thrive. Since our planet is being poisoned, plants and animals are no longer able to thrive and are becoming commercially unviable. So, rather than remove the poisons, plants and animals are being altered genetically in order to survive in chemically-contaminated environments. Commercially-grown, inorganic GM fruits and vegetables may look good, but they are becoming increasingly devoid of nutritional value. Even migrating birds and deer will not forage in fields of genetically modified food crops. What this means is that our food supply is being altered in ways that will not sustain us and the corporate monoliths we are allowing to take control our food will reap tremendous short-term profits that will begin to sag when the "marketplace" simply dies.

In the meantime, eat as healthy as you can�including organic fresh fruits and veggies and work to keep your body�s pH between 7.0 and 7.5. Avoid white sugar, white flour, polished white rice and all processed foods and beverages. I advise my patients to "shop around the edges" of a grocery store Drink lots of purified water, take supplements that contain vitamin C. Influenza viruses are very susceptible to soap; wash your hands before touching your face. Probably the easiest and most effective support to your immune system is to get plenty of rest.

Most importantly, do not buy into the fear mongering about the bird flu. You will have nothing to fear from the avian flu or any other illness if you adopt a holistic approach to your life and learn the basics on how to take good care of yourself and your family�in sickness and in health.

Harkins: Well, that certainly sounds like practical advice although this may require major lifestyle adjustments for many Americans. However, for most of us, once we have assimilated the incredible repercussions of the chemical/nuclear age on the viability of all life on our planet, we feel somewhat powerless to avert this looming disaster. What do you suggest that we, as individuals, do to reverse the direction our corporate-backed governments are taking us?

Tenpenny: We need to recognize that pharmaceutical companies, chemical companies and agribusinesses are not separate industries but function more as sister enterprises working together for their mutual benefit, profit and accumulation of power. They are not competitors, but synergists, creating massive wealth through designing drugs as solutions for the health problems caused by their products.

The quest for power and profit among these synergists is causing the nature of the food supply to change to the detriment of all life on Earth. It is obvious that we must reverse this process and bring our food and the environment back into a sense of balance that promotes health and vitality.

The question is, what can we do? My suggestion is to get involved. Find an issue that grabs you�GM foods, childhood vaccination, factory farming, animal rights, environmental cleanup projects�and go out there and give it your all. If you have a passion for a particular issue, there are groups out there who need your support, your financial contributions and, most importantly, your time. It is going to take all of us, following our passion to heal this world and restore the environment.

The time has come for everyone to participate. There is no time left for passivity. Each person must step outside his or her comfort zone and get involved. What is happening is both a temporal and spiritual battle. If you can�t get motivated enough through your own self-interest, then do it for your children and grandchildren.

Select a form of healing for yourself and your family that is outside the western paradigm of using chemicals called "drugs" for something called "medicine." Although occasionally necessary for critical health problems, prescription drugs given for chronic conditions do nothing to correct the underlying cause of the problem. Health is defined as being well in the absence of pharmaceuticals; health is not defined as the absence of symptoms in the presence of drugs.

The amount of work we are able to accomplish today to clean up the environment and find environmentally-sustainable alternatives to toxic technologies, I believe, will determine whether or not our children and grandchildren will have the opportunity to lead happy, healthy lives. It is up to each and every one of us to get intimately involved in disseminating this important information and get active politically. I wrote Fowl! As a means to both educate people on these issues and stimulate their participation in turning the tide of current events.

Harkins: Well, we have certainly covered a lot of ground today and given our readers much food for thought as well as, hopefully, stimulating their active participation in changing the current direction our governments have been leading us. There is a saying, "if the people will lead, the leaders will follow."

Dr. Tenpenny, thank you so much for your willingness to be interviewed and your obvious love for life and humanity that is evidenced by your dedication in getting this information out in book form.

Funny, that, how the public face of the "Satanic Panic" flap was a black-clad Dr Evil with an Eddie Munster 'do, and its fearless vampire hunter an almost impossibly bumbling everywhere-man of the far right with an FBI backstory. And how the leading proponents for the "disclosure" of extraterrestials have been military careerists or intelligence assets, while the most noisome "researchers" supporting the ET hypothesis have also been disseminators of military disinformation. It's more than just theme and content that evoke The Outer Limits. It's our uncritical digestion of dubious information that becomes our fattening hobby. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical.... Sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. If we're open to all channels and lack the discernment to know what we're watching, we're nothing but passive consumers of conspiratainment.

Ritual abusers aren't likely to be the overt occultist and the kid getting his hate on to Black Metal, but the priest in Toledo and the preacher in Ponchatoula; the prominent Nebraskan belting out the national anthem at two Republican national conventions. More often than not, the abuser isn't the self-marginalized outsider of caricature, but the insider: the one who already has power by the world's measure, and who means to gain more of it. Who profits by the You're with us or you're against us essentialism of the advocates for the most contentious and spurious speculations on 9/11, and how far does it carry us from the scene of the crime and its high criminals? The pods, the holograms, the missiles, the demolitions: how did we arrive at this familiar position of irrelevance, and who do you think means to keep us here? Popular Mechanics, CNN and the great Anglo-American dailies don't shy from drawing strawman caricatures of conspiracy and then delight in setting them ablaze with all of us supposedly inside like some springtime wickerman sacrifice, yet the meat of the case for criminal intent rots on the offering plate. Why do you think that is, and who do you think might like it like that? The conspirators, who create both a false opposition and a false conspiracy, remain invisible and free to deal more death.

It's a conceit of liberalism to believe knowledge is power, and it's a deceit of the "Information Age" to mistake information for knowledge. Gone missing, for the greater part, is wisdom. Find that, and maybe we find our power.

"Big Brother is watching, so learn to be invisible." That's some advice dished out early on in Grant Morrison's The Invisibles. It's a comic book from the mid-90s, a knowing caricature of a guerrilla war waged by the "Invisible College" against an occult elite that Morrison claims was determined by his own abduction/shamanic experience in Kathmandu. It also happens to contain more wisdom about the world than yet another cut and paste contending that the hole in Tower Two was too small for a Boeing 767. Art can do that. Even comic art.

A few years ago Morrison said, "Fuck man, I tell you when I was a kid I read Robert Anton Wilson and all this shit and here we are, we're standing here, talking about this shit and it's real!"

If the popular culture - even the popular alternative culture - gives us little but caricature, at least we have a good comic book.

What a difference a collar can make. The man on the left looks like Henry Lee Lucas's dumber brother; the man on the right, the sort responsible parents might entrust with their children.

Both are Father Gerald Robinson. I've written about him before. He's the Toledo priest belatedly facing trial for the 1980 ritual murder of a nun, Sister Margaret Ann Pahl. She was found, strangled and stabbed to death, in the sacristy of the chapel of Mercy Hospital, an altar cloth draped over her torso and her body posed lewdly to suggest she had been sexually assaulted. A "deliberate" pattern of stab wounds allegedly resembled a cross.

Today, Good Friday, is Gerald Robinson's 68th birthday. Margaret Ann Pahl was murdered on Holy Saturday. Her 72nd birthday would have fallen on that Easter Sunday. And Robinson's trial begins this Monday. A curious alignment of remembrance this long weekend.

Robinson was an early suspect and failed a polygraph test - he later admitted having lied when he'd said he'd heard the murderer's confession - but the case was cold until a number of women began to speak freely about having endured, as children, rape and ritual abuse in "cult-like ceremonies involving altars and men dressed in robes." Beneath the robes were Toledo clergy, and one of them, allegedly, was Gerald Robinson. ("I've had nightmares about this since I was a child," said one survivor. "I didn't think anyone would believe me.") Then, following the discovery of blood transfer patterns linking Robinson to the murder, he was arrested.

Again, it will be interesting to see how the ritual aspects of the murder and the ceremonial abuse of children get played by an embarrassed prosecution and a defense eager to capitalize on the seeming, bloody absurdity of it all. I mean, come on - just look at him. (The priest on the right, of course.)

Robinson retired from the priesthood in 2004, but his bishop has granted him permission to wear the collar in the courtroom. Good thing, too. That guy on the left didn't stand a chance.

The room is a "doomsday vault" designed to hold around 2 million seeds, representing all known varieties of the world's crops. It is being built to safeguard the world's food supply against nuclear war, climate change, terrorism, rising sea levels, earthquakes and the ensuing collapse of electricity supplies. "If the worst came to the worst, this would allow the world to reconstruct agriculture on this planet," says Cary Fowler, director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an independent international organisation promoting the project.

New Scientist has learned that the Norwegian government is planning to create the seed bank next year at the behest of crop scientists. The $3 million vault will be built deep inside a sandstone mountain lined with permafrost on the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen. The vault will have metre-thick walls of reinforced concrete and will be protected behind two airlocks and high-security blast-proof doors. It will not be permanently manned, but "the mountains are patrolled by polar bears", says Fowler.

The vault's seed collection, made up of duplicates of those already held at other seed banks, will represent the products of some 10,000 years of plant breeding by the world's farmers. Though most are no longer widely planted, the varieties contain vital genetic traits still regularly used in plant breeding.

To survive, the seeds need freezing temperatures. Operators plan to replace the air inside the vault each winter, when temperatures in Spitsbergen are around -18 �C. But even if some catastrophe meant that the vault was abandoned, the permafrost would keep the seeds viable. And even accelerated global warming would take many decades to penetrate the mountain vault.

"This will be the world's most secure gene bank by some orders of magnitude," says Fowler. "But its seeds will only be used when all other samples have gone for some reason. It is a fail-safe depository, rather than a conventional seed bank."

Norway first proposed the project in the 1980s but it was shelved because of security concerns: under an international treaty the Soviet Union had access to Spitsbergen at the time. With the end of the cold war and the signing of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, which gives legal protection to national crops, the door was open for the idea's revival.

The project also comes at a time when there is growing concern about the safety of existing seed banks around the world. Many have been criticised for their poor security, ageing refrigeration systems and vulnerable electricity supplies. In the late 1980s, terrorists ransacked an international potato seed bank in the Peruvian Andes, while more recently anti-globalisation campaigners have demonstrated against other banks.

The new Fort Knox for the world's crops will start by taking seeds from the network of seed banks run in the Philippines, Mexico, Syria, Nigeria and elsewhere by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, which is part-funded by the World Bank. "We will then add samples from elsewhere until we have a complete set of the world's crop varieties," says Fowler.

The scheme won UN approval at a meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome last October. A feasibility study said the facility "would essentially be built to last forever".

As a result of the North American Task Force comprised of the leading CEO's of the most powerful corporations in North America, businessmen, officials and academics, the prerogative right of the 21st century "kings" is becoming entrenched.

As a result of NAFTA, the creation of the hardware and software for the Canadian census is contracted to the Canadian subsidiary of the US armament company Lockheed Martin. (Lockheed Martin (Canada) inherits technology from the US Parent, Lockheed Martin, who first developed census software for the 2000 U.S. Census.)

As a result of the USA Patriot Act and the USA Homeland Security Act, all US companies and their subsidiaries wherever they are located are required on demand (on pain of heavy penalty for refusal), to release to the US Homeland Security all data held. No foreign law (i.e., Canadian) overrides the application of the USA statutes in the USA.

The long arm of the USA reaches into Canada to rule US companies and subsidiaries under their Patriot Act, just as that arm did/does under the U.S. Helms Burton law. Helms Burton law severely penalizes any US company or subsidiary dealing with CUBA, as well as any foreign company dealing with CUBA who wishes to deal with the USA.

The US Patriot Act requires that the company shall not disclose that the demand and the release of information has occurred. So you will never know whether or not your personal data has gone to Uncle Sam's Homeland Security.

Stats Canada insists that the U.S. Patriot Act will not affect our data saying that the Lockheed Martin subsidiary only has the contract to create the software and hardware. Anyone with some computer technical skills will confirm that any designer of software or hardware can create the system in such a way that Stats Can using the software and hardware would not even know the data was being harvested.

The issue here is not who is right about whether or not the USA will be able to harvest our data. The issue is why are we in such a pickle at all!

The reasons are multiple:

1. NAFTA which forbids preferential treatment to truly Canadian companies or Canadian workers.

2. The Smart Border Plan between the USA and Canada signed by John Manley December 2001 as Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and Tom Ridge, the U.S. Homeland Security Director which requires the sharing of citizen data, meaning the US Homeland Security gets what it wants to know about Canadians. The terms of this agreement are being implemented incrementally but quickly without the knowledge or consent of Canadians. It is not just covert sharing that is to happen, but overt as well. Start with the stealth and then whammy with the fait accompli.(John Manley currently is a leading light in the North American Task Force of CEO's commanding the creation of the North American Union.) Our census data will be shared one way or the other so long as this agenda is permitted.

3. The Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement signed by Martin (Canada), Bush (US) and Fox (Mexico) in March 2005 confirmed by Harper, Bush, and Fox in March 2006.By this agreement the three leaders agreed to implement the grand design of the most influential corporations of North America to create a common unit of North America sharing data and merging the three countries into one union without an overall democratically accountable representative political structure. They agreed to expand the Smart Border Plan melding the three countries into one corporate/ military union, focusing initially on Canada /US unity. This means changing Canadian laws and legal structures to mimic those created by the US Congress removing civil liberties (like the security of our census information.)

The integration is proceeding in Canada by subtle but massive bureaucratic restructuring of our skin and skeleton, fleshed out by the dismantling of our constitutional rights without due process and by deceit. David Emerson has crossed to the Conservatives to continue that restructuring that he was spearheading under the Liberals. Take note of recently changed names of government agencies that reflect this transformation.

4. The overweaning power and influence of the giant corporations located in North America.

5. The overweaning power of the Prime Minister, his office and his bureaucracy which runs the government, is implementing this transformation, and is stealing from us our country, our prosperity and our security.

6. The excessive number of elected and unelected officials whose first loyalty is to the interests of their own giant corporations.

7. The will, determination, and/ or acquiescence of the politicians of all parties in leadership roles in our Canadian Parliament to facilitate the creation of a North American Union rather than to serve and protect Canadians.

8. The total failure of the Canadian Parliamentary system to be able to serve the will and needs and security of its citizens or to protect and preserve Canadian sovereignty.

The scenario is depressing. Each of us can easily feel totally powerless. But we are not.

The US Gulag Prison System

No, not the one you think, outrageous as it is. I'm referring to the US prison system that's with no exaggeration about as shockingly abusive as the gulag abroad. It qualifies for that label by its size alone - more than 2.1 million as of June, 2004 and growing larger by about 900 new inmates every week. Blacks (mostly poor and disadvantaged) especially are affected. While they make up just 12.3% of the population, they account for half the prison population, and their numbers there have grown fivefold in the last 25 years. Hispanics (also poor) account for another 15%.

About half of those incarcerated are there for non-violent offenses, and half of those (500,000) are drug related. But while blacks make up 15% of ilicit drug users, they account for 37% of drug arrests, 42% of drug offenders in federal prison and 62% in state prisons. And Human Rights Watch reported in 2000 that in one third of the states 75% of all prisoners for drug-related offenses are black. In my home state of Illinois they reported the number to be an astonishing 89%, a total exceed by only one other state. Further, in a so-called free society, below the radar are hundreds of political prisoners, mostly people of color, there only because they represent a threat to the state from their pursuit of justice for their people if they were free.

Today the US shamelessly has more people behind bars than any other nation including China with over 4 times our population. And things have become especially repressive against those in society least able to defend themselves including immigrants of color and our newest head of the queue demon - Muslims. The Bush administration has made a bad situation far worse taking full advantage of their fear-induced "permanent state of war" and sham "global war on terrorism" to target all those seen as a potential threat to their plan for global dominance and full control at home.

Taken as a whole, this is a national disgrace and outrage, but the effect on those targeted is pretty much below the radar, unreported and undiscussed in the mainstream. Who cares about a couple of million mostly poor, mostly people of color (including immigrants, many of whom are undocumented and have no legal rights at all) languishing behind bars out of sight and out of mind. When any of this is discussed, it's to let the (voter eligible) public know our political leaders are "tough on crime" and working to keep us safe. Safe from whom or what? In the words of a great world class journalist, that kind of talk is "what comes out of the rear end of a bull." What's really going on has little to do with public safety but lots to do with controlling a justifiably restive population of poor and desperate people, the inability of those people to afford a proper defense in our so-called criminal justice system stacked against them, and a growing opportunity for big business to profit on human misery. It's a kind of modern day slavery - a growing state and privately run criminal injustice and prison industry using human beings as their product. In this land of opportunity and the "free market", all things (and people) are commodities to be exploited for profit.

A GROWTH MARKET OF POOR AND DESPERATE PEOPLE, MOSTLY BLACK AND HISPANIC - A READY RESOURCE FOR THE PRISON GROWTH INDUSTRY

The way this country has always treated its least advantaged throughout its history is shameful. British historian Arnold J. Toynbee perceptively understood this in his quote made 46 years ago when he said: "America is today the leader of a world-wide anti-revolutionary movement in the defence of vested interests. She now stands for what Rome stood for: Rome consistently supported the rich against the poor.........and since the poor, so far, have always and everywhere been far more numerous than the rich, Rome's policy made for inequality, for injustice, and for the least happiness of the greatest number." Imagine what Toynbee might say today if he were still living.

Toynbee didn't say it but he might have added that none in America have fared worse than people of color - American Indians, Hispanics, Asians and especially Blacks first brought here as chattel and who remained that way for over 300 years. Even when they were freed by the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution and guaranteed the right of life, liberty and property, due process and equal protection under the law by the Fourteenth Amendment they still seldom got it. Throughout the 100 years of Jim Crow justice and even after the civil rights gains in the 1960s, most blacks and other people of color have always been on the bottom rung of society (along with our native people) and denied most of its benefits including equal justice under the law.

There are those today in the US, even from the progressive community, who like to say this country has come a long way from its racist past, and while there are still far too many inequities we're making progress. Are these people living in the same country and on the same planet as I am? In the US the statistics on blacks alone in the criminal justice system make a mockery of any notion of a nation no longer racist. When it comes to the issue of justice, we've never been more racist since the days of legal slavery. The numbers are truly shocking and in a country claiming to be a democracy and a model for the rest of the world. I hope that world makes another choice. There are far better ones than ours, and our imperial adventures abroad and policies at home toward our least advantaged prove it.

THE SHAMEFUL FACTS PAINT AN UGLY PICTURE OF ANOTHER (LOCKED UP) AMERICA, OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF MIND

Here are some key facts. Nationwide black males over 18 are incarcerated at 9 times the rate of comparable white males, and in 11 states those rates range from 12 to 26 times the rate for whites. In my home state of Illinois the rate is 15 times, and in the nation's capital the rate is an astonishing 49 times. The most current data on incarceration for blacks in the US was 1,815 per 100,000 vs. 609 per 100,000 for Latinos, 235 for whites and 99 for Asians. For adult black males the rate was 4,630 per 100,000, 1,668 for Latinos and 482 for whites. In 1999, 11% of black males in their 20s and early 30s were in prison including one third of black male high school dropouts. Even worse, the statistical model used by the Bureau of Justice Statistics at the turn of the century to determine racial and ethnic differences in their chances for incarceration at sometime in their lifetime predicts a 29% chance of serving prison time for a black male aged 16 in 1996. The comparable chance for a white male in the same age group was 4%. In 2002 the Justice Policy Institute reported there were more black men behind bars than in colleges or universities. It also reported that 30% of black males between 20 and 29 are either in prison or on probation or parole.

From the numbers above we know that one in every 20 black men over 18 is now in a state or federal prison compared to one in every 180 whites. And in some states like Oklahoma, Iowa, Rhode Island, Texas and Wisconsin, the black male incarceration rate incredibly is between 13 -14% of all black men in those states - a devastating blow to the black families and communities there. It's also true that the best predictor of a state's incarceration rate and its total prison population is the size of its black population.

By almost all measure the state of what can only be called the US criminal injustice system is shocking and outrageous. In the last 35 years the total number incarcerated has exploded from less than 300,000 in 1970 to more than 7 times that number now. Today the US is number one not only in its total prison population but in the highest number per 100,000 population imprisoned - 690. Only Russia is a close second with 675 while in South Africa it's 400, England - 125, France - 90, Sweden - 60 and Italy - 40. Would anyone suggest the US is 17 times more non-law-abiding than Italy, or is there a simpler explanation?

It's also true that race is the most prominent reason why states deny voting rights to convicted felons and ex-felons. The greater the percentage of blacks in a state, the more likely it is for that state to disenfranchise its residents who've served time in jail. A prison record in those states means a loss of a citizen's most fundamental democratic right. The laws vary by state, but The Sentencing Project estimates 4.7 million Americans, or 1 in 43 adults, have currently or permanently lost their right to vote because of a felony conviction. And 1.4 million black men, or 13% of all black men, are so disenfranchised, a rate 7 times the national average. Even more shocking, the same report estimates that given the current rates of incarceration, 30% of the next generation of black men will be disenfranchised at some time in their life. And in states that disenfranchise ex-offenders, as many as 40% of black men may permanently lose their right to vote.

Let's be very clear. Based on the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution it can, and I believe should, be argued that all state disenfranchisement laws are unconstitutional. Section 1 of that amendment reads: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous servitude." It remains for a future Congress and/or the courts to address this issue and decide whether we're to be a democracy for all our citizens or just for those we decide are eligible and for the reasons we choose. And this doesn't address the more basic question of whether our right to vote really matters. The public has virtually no voice in choosing the 2 major parties' candidates, and when we cast our votes the new electronic voting machines can easily be programmed or manipulated to ignore our choice and count it for another candidate and even do it multiple times. This is why half the eligible voting public opt out. They don't believe the system is free and fair so why bother. That thought never leaves my mind, and I wonder why I bother. But that consideration awaits another commentary and analysis, a pretty fundamental and important one.

THE BIG AND GROWING BUCKS SPENT ON LOCKING PEOPLE UP IN CAGES

Since the 1970s the prison-industrial complex has exploded in size and continues to grow exponentially. It now exceeds $40 billion annually and rising. On average states now spend 60 cents on prisons for every dollar spent on higher education, up from 28 cents in 1980. And several large states are so hell-bent to lock people up their annual budget for prisons exceed that for education. Also, the overall rate of prison spending growth has greatly exceeded that for education for the past 25 years. It's shocking that the annual per prisoner cost today almost equals a year's tuition at Harvard. And what's all this spending buying us. Not a damn thing except a nation growing more repressive, more racist and more likely to target anyone if they ever run short of their current favorites. But since 9/11 they've tapped a new vein of 1.5 million Muslims. And if they throw in Hindus, Buddhists and a few other easy to demonize miscellaneous sects out of the mainstream they can easily triple that number. Now that's a "strike" that may be too "rich" to ignore. Think of all the new prisons they'll need to lock up a load of them, get them off the streets and help keep a new growth industry growing and prosperous.

Contrary to the "law and order" baloney from our politicians, there's no evidence of a rising trend of criminality, including the violent kinds. Since 1980, the data on the national crime rate has trended slightly up, then down, without any significant change. Still the incarceration rate has skyrocketed reflecting a crime wave that doesn't exist. In the 1990s, thanks to a good economy, crime rates actually fell, but incarceration rates rose dramatically nonetheless. Smell fishy? It sure does to me. And my own view, shared by others, is that this is all part of a sinister effort to control dissent by a combination of a state-induced climate of fear and hard line national security police state tactics to keep a restive population in line. Those most likely to be restive are the ones most deprived, the ones left out over the last 25 years when the wealth gap widened exponentially between rich and poor and continues to unabated. At the same time the social safety net has been and continues to be shredded making conditions intolerable for the poor and also impacting lower and middle income earners and families. Of course, the ones always hurt most are people of color and that means mostly black people. But Hispanics are gaining ground in this race to the bottom as that segment of our population (including undocumented immigrants) is growing the fastest along with those from Asia.

THE SO-CALLED "WAR ON DRUGS" - IT'S A HOAX AND A NATIONAL DISGRACE

We should have caught on by now. When our political leaders want to scare hell out of us about something, real or imagined (you can bet it's the latter), they declare war on it. It gets the juices flowing and the flags waving. We had the phony "cold war", and now, with "the evil empire" gone and desperate to find new imagined and contrived enemies, we have a "war on terrorism" and a "war on drugs." We also have an unmentioned "war on the climate" as witnessed by the alarming rate of melting of the polar and Greenland ice caps. Maybe one day they'll declare dandruff public enemy number one and declare war on it. Might as well. It would make as much sense as all the others, except for the one real one they never mention caused by global warming.

And, oh yes, there's one other war never mentioned, and it's the most important and dangerous one of all - it's the ongoing and growing war on the Constitution and our sacred Bill of Rights. They're being taken from us right before our eyes, and in our blindness and mental fog we don't even see it happening. Most of us know the Ben Franklin quote about those who would sacrifice their freedom for security deserve neither and will lose both. He also said that "distrust and caution are the parents of security" and reportedly said at the signing of the Declaration of Independence "we must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Franklin's contemporary, the great German philosopher and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, just as wisely said that "None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." Franklin, Goethe and many others aren't considered iconic and venerable historic figures for nothing. And if we take the trouble to read them, we have the benefit of their great wisdom. They've warned us with it, and we damn well better be listening and heeding them. If not, we'll awaken one day, find our precious freedoms gone, finally understand what happened, and it'll be too late.

Except for the 2 unmentioned real wars, the others are surreal ones. They're contrived and concocted by devious politicians for their own interests like trying to get reelected or needing a reason to raise defense or homeland security spending. They're also to benefit their corporate allies who profit from them. The more they can scare us the greater the amount of our tax dollars they can divert from vital societal needs to put in the pockets of their corporate friends and fight wars of imperial conquest for their benefit. And the more repressive laws they can pass to destroy our civil liberties, and as discussed above, lock up in cages those most in need and most likely to be restive about it.

The current catchy phrase in the "drug war" was first used during the supposed crack epidemic in the 80s, but we can pin one more rap on Richard Nixon who first declared a "war on drugs" over 30 years ago. But the idea of making some "drugs" illegal goes back much further than that, to the 1930s (and earlier) when prohibition ended and alcohol producing companies may have decided to eliminate the threat of a competing "drug." You'd think we might have learned something from 13 years of violence and corruption under Prohibition that made criminals out of otherwise law-abiding people who may have just wanted a cold beer and also created a new revenue source for organized crime.

But all that was chicken feed compared to today as the UN now estimates the annual take from trafficking elicit drugs is around $400-500 billion. That's double the sales revenue from US legal prescription drugs Big Pharma reported in 2005. Those profiting big time from the illegal ones include more than the "kingpins" and organized crime. The market is so big everyone wants in on it. For many banks, including the major international money center ones, "laundering" drug money is one of their important profit centers. And it's well-known that the CIA was been involved in drug-trafficking (directly or indirectly) throughout its half century existence and then began to profit from it in earnest during the Contra wars of the 1980s to fund their operations. Today the CIA is part of the elicit drug trade in places like Afghanistan working with major criminal syndicates in the huge business of trafficking heroin. The take from this one operation alone is so lucrative it's hard to imagine they'd ever give it up or not want in on all other major parts of the drug trade worldwide. Who'll stop or prosecute them? And what criminal enterprise wouldn't want them as a partner to guarantee them ease of access to the US and other major markets. That's a marriage joined together none of the parties would ever want to put asunder.

And now in this modern Age of (contrived) Anxiety, we have 2 new "super-spook" agencies established to take full surveillance advantage of the Bush administration's unjustifiable "wartime" powers and fear-induced concocted "war on terror" to last for "generations" - The Office of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Wanna bet they're also in the elicit drug biz big time. How could they resist it. They both need every buck they can get to watch all of us, everywhere, all the time - which is what they're now doing. And it's an indisputable fact that all the spy agencies are above the law and can do whatever they please - spy legally and illegally, traffic elicit drugs, torture detainees they control and murder anyone they target including heads of state.

But it's the purpose of this essay to focus on how the so-called drug war has led to a burgeoning prison-industrial complex that adversely affects the lives of millions of society's most disadvantaged who happen to be mostly people of color and most of them black. Just like during Prohibition, otherwise law-abiding people have become criminals and are being locked away for long sentences. The repressive "mandatory minimum" sentences are especially harsh and outrageous. Supposedly established to target "kingpins" and big time dealers, it hasn't turned out that way and likely was never intended to. The US Sentencing Commission reports that only 5.5% of all federal crack cocaine defendants and 11% of all federal drug defendants are "high-level" dealers. The rest are low-level operatives and those caught "possessing." In most cases they're from society's least advantaged and poor, and most of them are black. These convenient targets create a ready supply of bodies to fill prison cells as part of the plan to remove the unwanted from the streets and create a new growth industry at the same time.

SOME QUICK FACTS ABOUT COCAINE AND ITS DERIVATIVE "CRACK" AND HOW ITS USE TARGETS BLACKS

First off, coca leaf cultivation in South America has been the cornerstone of the Andean region for 4 thousand years, and its consumption has been part of the culture since before the Incas. It's commonly used by millions of people there including the cocaleros, or coca farmers, as we in this country use coffee, tea, a glass of wine or just a cold beer. Besides drinking coca tea, the leaf is chewed to relieve fatigue, suppress appetite, as a communal activity and to offset altitude sickness. The US Embassy in Peru even recommends it for the latter purpose.

Use of cocaine in the US didn't first begin in the 60s. It's been around recreationally for nearly 150 years for "whatever ailed you" tonics, in cigarettes, ointments and nasal sprays. Its use was perfectly legal until the federal government classified it as a narcotic (which it is not) in 1914. After that it could only be gotten legally by prescription or illegally from a "street dealer."

Cocaine is a powder which in "cooked" form is called "crack." The law treats each very differently. The racist "mandatory minimum" sentencing laws established by Congress in 1986 penalize crack users especially harshly. Defendants convicted of selling 500 grams of powder cocaine vs. 5 grams of crack each receive 5 year sentences. For 5 kilos of powder and 50 grams of crack it's a 10 year sentence. That's a 100:1 ratio. Why? Hold on, there's more.

Simple possession of any amount of powder by a first-time offender is a misdemeanor punishable by a max 1 year sentence. For crack, simple possession is a felony carrying a 5 year sentence. Now to the why. Blacks accounted for 84% of convicted crack offenders in 2000, Hispanics 9% and whites 6%. For powder it was Hispanics - 50%, blacks - 30% and whites - 18%. Now you know. The federal crack laws established 20 years ago were part of the "Reagan revolution" and its racist war against the poor, mainly blacks. It was also intended as a defense against those least advantaged poor and mainly blacks as the "Reagan revolution" began dismantling the social safety net and transferring wealth to the rich and well-off. That transfer has now been ongoing for 25 years with no end in sight. The "war on drugs" and its harsh laws, mainly targeting blacks, were intended to defuse the inevitable pressure that would build among the poor and black community and likely explode again in the streets as it did in the 60s. 2.1+ million people locked in cages is how this nation's leaders address the gross social inequity problem it deliberately created. It's their solution, and it's a national disgrace and outrage.

TORTURE IN US PRISONS - IT'S NOT JUST AT GUANTANAMO AND ABU GHRAIB - IT'S RIGHT HERE IN THE USA

Surprised? The few who even think about this may be, but even many of them shamefully believe all those locked up deserve the harsh treatment they get. Aren't they sent there to be punished for committing crimes? Did they expect a "country club?" Punishment is what they get big time because prisons everywhere are brutal places, and those sent to them have no rights and it shows in how they're treated - routinely. And let's be perfectly clear about the way it is at all US domestic and foreign based prisons (and most all other countries' as well): No, it doesn't just happen at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and Bagram near Kandahar, Afghanistan; and no, it's not just by a few "rogue elements" or "bad apples." What goes on is policy, and it comes right from the top sanctioned and approved. And let's be very clear about one other thing. The real criminals sit in corporate suites and boardrooms or in capitol hill offices while their victims are locked in cages and subjected to unspeakable abuse and brutal torture with no chance to stop it or receive redress.

Prisons, with few exceptions, are not intended for rehabilitation. They are institutions societies use for vengeance and punishment. There are the most gruesome hellholes around the world the US takes full advantage of just in the prisoners it "renditions" for attempted information extraction by some of the worst physical and psychological tortures the human mind can conceive. But this essay is about what goes on in US prisons within our borders, and what you'll read below will sound like reports about Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. Get ready to feel your skin crawl.

Everything we saw on TV months ago about prisoner torture at Abu Ghraib (and heard goes on at Guantanamo) happens in our state and federal prison system right here at home and lots more we didn't see or hear about. These are the lessons and techniques first devised and used in US based torture-prisons and then exported for use in our comparable torture-prisons around the world. That's the way things are in all our prisons, and in the language of author Gertrude Stein when she referred to roses: a prison is a prison is a prison. The main difference between San Quentin and Abu Ghraib is their location. What goes on at both and all others includes savage beatings by prison guards; attacks by fierce dogs that inflict real bites; severe shocking with cattle prods and 50,000 volt emitting Taser electro-shock guns often used multiple times that make the victim shake for hours after being struck and can also kill and often do; assaults by toxic chemicals like pepper spray strong enough to inflict severe pain, second degree burns, temporary blindness, and even death in a vulnerable victim; and all this happening at times with prisoners stripped naked including brutal rapes by guards, other prisoners and much more.

A courageous woman activist imprisoned for several months for her actions told me the case of a woman she saw stripped naked in her cell and then bound suspended in spread-eagle form on her prison bars and left there for hours to suffer. The experience devastated her and nearly killed her. And she was another activist being punished for her courageous acts. Hard to believe? You'd better believe it because it goes on every day in all prisons routinely throughout the country - acts of deliberate barbarity and sadism, so severe they can and do kill and often leave their victims an emotional shell when they don't. Whenever you hear reports about prisoners committing suicide, you'd better think hard about it. It's most likely they were murdered by prison guards and reported as suicide. It may be from repeated Taser shocks, from being beaten to death so savagely every rib in their body was broken or just from a body giving out from repeated and brutal maltreatment over a long period with nothing more to look forward to but more of the same. How many can endure the worst of that? No one in a civilized country should ever have to. And no civilized person should believe they had it coming.

HOW INTERNATIONAL LAW TREATS TORTURE

International law is explicit and long-standing forbidding the use of any form of torture and inhumane or degrading treatment under any circumstances. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlawed it in 1948. The Fourth Geneva Convention then did it in 1949 banning any form of "physical or mental coercion" and affirming detainees must at all time be treated humanely. The European Convention followed in 1950. Then in 1984 the UN Convention Against Torture became the first binding international instrument dealing exclusively with the issue of banning torture in any form for any reason. And let's be clear on what's meant by torture and inhumane treatment. It includes punching a prisoner or detainee in the mouth or kicking him or her in the stomach or butt.

Except for the non-binding "Universal Declaration", all the others are binding international law, and the US is a signatory to the Fourth Geneva Convention and the UN Convention. And hold on, there's more. The US War Crimes Act of 1996 makes it a criminal offense for US military personnel and US nationals to commit war crimes to include cruel treatment and torture covered under the Fourth Geneva Convention. And virtually every human rights organization is on the record banning all kinds of torture anywhere for any reason.

A BRIEF DIVERSION ON TORTURE OVERSEAS

I must include some important information about one type of torture that may be only going on overseas - for now. Although the US is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions and the UN Convention Against Torture, it's routinely ignored and violated them with impunity in US prisons and abroad. Further, the CIA's use of psychological torture was exempted in the UN Convention.

With cover from that exemption, Professor Alfred McCoy's new book - A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation From the Cold War to the War of Terror - exposes the CIA's secret efforts to develop new forms of torture over that period. He explained how they conducted intensive research to crack the code of human consciousness and through much trial and error came up with human devastating psychological and self-inflicting torture techniques - from sensory disorientation or the severe pain from tortures like forced continuous standing for 24 - 48 hours.

The CIA experiments continue now at Guantanamo and other overseas hellhole torture-prisons. But 2 new techniques have been added - cultural sensitivity and individual fears and phobias. This four-fold assault on the human psyche is now being used against prisoners held in overseas prisons, and the detainees affected (most picked up randomly and guilty of no offense) are being used as human "lab rats" in a gruesome, vile and clearly illegal and immoral experiment to devise the most effective psychological techniques to break down a human subject - to break a human being so totally it's near impossible to recover.

I could find no information on if these experiments are now being conducted in US domestic prisons. But that doesn't mean they're not. They may be happening here, but we don't know about them. But the key point is this. Once the use of torture in all forms gains currency, it's inevitable it will spread everywhere. And let's be very clear on one other point. The Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 (the so-called McCain Anti-Torture amendment) passed in December last year is so full of loopholes and offsets by other legislation that it's worthless and will do nothing to stop the tortures explained above.

THE DEATH PENALTY - THE "HEART OF DARKNESS" OF OUR CRIMINAL-INJUSTICE SYSTEM

Life in prison is a living hell for all those in one as all the victims know who've been there or those of us who've read about it in detail as I have. Being there is like being in one of the 5 levels of Dante's hell where those consigned to spend eternity are doomed to eternal punishment.

All prisons are hellholes. But for those prisoners with any hope of release one day, the second lowest level of Dante's hell is any of the so-called "supermax" prisons. They're supposedly intended to house society's most dangerous, incorrigibly violent inmates, but many sent there aren't that at all like the many political prisoners consigned that fate because the state wishes to bury them alive and keep them isolated. The number in these "special" hellholes are a small but growing percent of the total prison population, and those in them spend their waking and sleeping hours locked in small, often windowless, cells for long sentences of many years. They're deprived of all contact with other inmates and only allowed out for brief periods a few times a week for showers and some solitary exercise in a small, enclosed space. They're deprived of all mental stimulation from human contact, recreation or education, and are nearly always shackled hands and feet and escorted by armed guards whenever they leave their cells. Prisoners who've endured this torture, come out, and spoken publicly about it have described it to be like living in a tomb. And the state inflicted misery they've been subjected to often results in a host of severe emotional problems including insanity. Try locking yourself in your bathroom with a little plain food and water for 24 hours (if you can stand it) and see how you feel. Then multiply that by 20 or more years.

The state and federally sponsored murder factories known as "death rows" are, without a doubt, the lowest and worst level of Dante's hell. Dante might have written his words "Abandon every hope, all ye who enter" for the abandoned souls sent to these barbaric death factories. They only look different than Auschwitz. Those entering never come out (except the few lucky ones DNA evidence exonerate). As of April, 2005 there were 3452 on "death row" in the 37 states with the death penalty including 36 in federal prisons and 7 held by the US military. The vast majority of them are poor or disadvantaged and their racial breakdown is as follows: 45.5% white, 41.7% black, 10.4% Hispanic, 1.2% Asian, 1.2% American Indian and .5% unknown. Nearly all of them, 98.5%, are male.

Most civilized countries have no death penalty, and in the Global North only the US and Japan still do. Japan is very selective in who it executes, unlike the US with its assembly line-like killing operations. The Japanese have executed about 50 inmates in the last dozen years and about an equal number now await execution. Many opponents of the death penalty call these "final solution" acts institutionalized, state-sponsored, ritualistic acts of torture-murder. They say "torture" because often the prisoner is so hated that their executioners "deliberately" try to inflict pain during the process of killing them. And while that alone is inhumane and barbaric enough, all too often the accused is innocent, often the state knows it, and they're still put to death. Most often these are people of color, most likely black, poor and unable to afford a proper defense. They become victims of a system not based on justice but on vengeance along with the belief by elected officials that being "tough on crime" is a good vote getter.

The case of Stan "Tookie" Williams, as much as anyone, stands out for its barbarity and gross injustice. Stan was a co-founder of the Crips street gang as a teenager in South Central Los Angeles in 1969. He was convicted and sentenced to death for multiple murders he said he never committed (I believe him), but never got a proper defense to prove it. Even later when evidence became known that might have exonerated him, he was never given a chance to prove his innocence.

Over a dozen years before his execution in California, Stan changed his life, became an anti-gang activist while on death row, and renounced his former gang affiliation. He co-wrote children's books, worked to convince youths not to join gangs and wrote one of the most compelling books on prison life I ever read called Life in Prison. He did it to show readers what prison life is really like in plain, stark language. He pulled no punches. Anyone reading it will know that prison is no place any human being wants to be.

For his work in prison, Stan received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations, in 2004 a feature film called Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story was made about his life, and as his execution date approached, a mass effort I was part of was launched to urge an uncaring and hostile Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to grant clemency. Fat chance. Thousands joined the effort including celebrities, politicians, Nobel laureates and Pacifica Radio, especially on its very special bold and courageous KPFA weekday news and information program Flashpoints Radio (the best program of its kind anywhere). It was all in vein, clemency was denied and Stan was put to death by lethal injection on December 13, 2005 as thousands protested outside the infamous San Quentin State Prison. Stan's death was not easy or painless. It took repeated needle insertions in a process that took nearly 30 minutes of great inflicted pain to complete. Stan's suffering at the end was not an exception. It's common practice, and as mentioned above, is deliberately inflicted by a sadistic staff. As such, even for a prisoner being executed, this is a flagrant violation of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution that prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment." But who cares and who will act to prevent it when it's inflicted on a condemned black man and on the day the state murders him.

THE PROFITABLE BUSINESS OF RUNNING A GULAG

The for-profit side of running a gulag began to explode during the Reagan years when incarceration rates began increasing dramatically. Along with a growing private prisons industry (a small slice of the prison pie still largely a public enterprise), a vast array of private businesses wanted a piece of the action and got it. These include architectural and construction companies; food service contractors; all sorts of equipment, hardware and other suppliers of steel doors, razor wire, communications systems, and health care and medical supplies. There's also a big need for uniforms and assorted weapons including dangerous products to restrain like clemical sprays that can injure, cause severe pain, second degree burns, temporary blindness or worse and taser electro-shock guns that emit 50,000 volts of electricity (enough to flatten an all-pro NFL lineman in peak form) that can and have killed as many as 167 victims from it's use through January, 2006. And there's loads more. The (mal) care and feeding of a couple of million humans takes a lot of supplying to keep the system going. Add it all up and it's big business, and it gets bigger with every new prison and the inmates to fill them. Not to worry. Unlike oil, there's no chance of running out bodies.

The big players in this growing industry are the private companies that run the hellholes. And the ones they run are even more hellish than the public ones. Private, publicly owned corporations with shareholders and Wall Street to please always need a growing revenue and profit stream and strict cost control to maximize the bottom line part of it. That means understaffing, low pay for poorly trained staff, poor and unsafe conditions, little or no life-enhancing or self-help programs like educational opportunities or counseling services to rehabilitate those in need like ilicit drug users, and even worse medical care than the third world kind in the publicly run system. Why bother, they all cost money, reduce profits and constrain shareholder equity. Private contractors can also exploit prisoners as de facto chattel. They're not obliged to pay wages or benefits and can take full advantage of all those bodies free of charge. Why would they ever pass that up. It's one more revenue and profit stream.

The private side of running prisons is still a small part of the total. But it's growing, and as it does, it's darker side may just get darker. Unlike most businesses, quality control is not one of their concerns. If humans suffer to enhance the bottom line, who will care. In running a gulag, you just gotta keep 'em under control locked in cages, and if you use, abuse and lose some along the way, there's plenty more supply to fill the available beds. That's how it works in a nation that commodifies its masses and exploits them. It's what happens in this modern era when social conditions deteriorate enough to produce what Franklin Roosevelt spoke about in the Great Depression years of the 1930s when he said "I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished." It's not that bad yet, but we're heading in that direction. As discussed above, it produces a restive population the state chooses to lock up in lieu of providing vital social services to satisfy essential needs. The result is the US gulag, the shame of the nation. Future historians and others will judge us by the character of our social conscience, especially how we treat our least advantaged and most needy. They'll also judge us by our system of justice and the prisons within it which reflect that conscience. The honest ones won't be kind. The great Russian 19th century novelist, Fyodor Dostoevsky, once remarked that he measured the quality of a society by the quality of its prisons. He might have added by its quantity as well.

THE EVIDENCE SHOWS A NATION MOVING FROM A REPUBLIC TO TYRANNY

The evidence on our criminal injustice system and prisons within it alone shows a nation moving from a republic to tyranny. It's not much different from what happened in ancient Rome when it passed from a republic to an empire under the rule of its emperor Augustus Caesar after Julius ignored his "Ides of March" warning and ended his reign the hard way in the Roman Senate.

Our prison system alone is a stark symbol and reminder of a society based on militarism and imperial conquest abroad, the shredding of our civil liberties at home, and the dismantling of our social contract obligation along with the transfer of wealth to the privileged and powerful. It reflects a nation descending into the hell of tyranny and despotism that threatens to become worse and affect us all except those at the top. We've created the monster of a national security police state (run by the new Department of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence) to control a growing restive population that will likely grow larger. It will include many more of us as those in need grow in numbers and new demons are easily found, targeted and moved to prison cells to maintain absolute control. That's how it works in all tyrannical states, even ones claiming to be democracies like ours but which, in fact, are not.

It happened in ancient Rome and in more modern times in Nazi Germany after Hitler was appointed Chancellor and ended the Weimar Republic. He called his party the National Socialist German Workers Party (the term Nazi is the short form for National Socialist with a "zi" on the end), but his constituents were the German industrialists and militarists and his ideology was fascist and racist. It wasn't long before he removed his many enemies and tried to create a state for the privileged and Aryian pure. The immortal words of Pastor Martin Niemoller explained it and warns us now when he said they first came for the Jews, then the Communists, then the trade unionists and each time he didn't speak out because he wasn't one of them - until there was no one left and they came for him, and there was no one to speak out to help him.

This essay only addresses the mass incarceration of the most vulnerable among us. I've discussed the other issues in other writings and intend to write solely about our war on immigrants in a future article. But unless we heed Pastor Niemoller's warning, one day, sooner than we think, they'll come for us and who'll be left to help. Based on the evidence I've presented we already have a society out of control with a reckless rogue administration, a "go-along" Congress and "friendly" courts leading us along the road to hell.

The US prison system is its metaphor and clear warning and reflects a repressive state based on harsh and unjust Patriot Act laws that are close to being supplemented by a racist, fascist-style immigration bill passed by the House (the so-called Sensenbrenner anti-immigration bill) and now being considered in the Senate. Its provisions that criminalize undocumented immigrants (targeted at those of color) and all those compassionate enough who help them are right out of the bowels of Nazi hell. It may pass and likely be followed by even more repressive laws that target you and me unless we're one of the privileged. So far, the targets are mostly those on the bottom rungs of society - people of color including immigrants and Muslims. But also in the line of fire is anyone of influence (including Muslim academics falsely labeled terrorists) daring to speak out and oppose state policy. How long will it be before it gets even worse and no one is safe?

Few people know the president has now given himself the sole power to designate anyone he chooses for any reason he decides a "bad guy" - incredibly in that language. Going even further, in January, 2006, George Bush claimed the right to govern as a "Unitary Executive" with the power to abrogate the separation of powers doctrine, bypass the Congress and courts and act as he chooses to "protect national security." This simply means if he decides to ignore the law he'll govern by presidential edict usurping the right of dictatorial power with no constraint. If he's ever brazen enough to do it (and don't believe he won't be) and isn't stopped, he'll have "crossed the Rubicon" and turned the country into a full-blown totalitarian state and the ball game is over for all of us. We're already all in the queue as potential prey, and we'd better understand we're moving up in it fast. Unless Bush-Cheney and those around them are stopped, they'll come for us one day, and then it'll be too late. It makes a shameless mockery of any notion that all citizens, rich and poor, are entitled to the sacred rights and protections guaranteed us by the Constitution. Only the privileged and powerful get that right today, not the rest of us. And if you're black and poor, an undocumented immigrant or a Muslim of color (our latest public enemy No. 1), you have no rights at all. Step right up, they've assigned you a number too, and you'd better keep a bag packed.

We've come a long way in our 230 year history but, except for brief periods of relief and redress, it's been pretty much downhill. If that's "the American way", it's time we retool and find a new path to follow, one based on social, political and economic justice, of caring about all others instead of using and abusing them for the benefit of a privileged few. We may not have much time left, so we better wake up and move fast. If we keep watching Fox News, read the New York Times, listen to NPR and then run to the mall, we're doomed to meet the same fate as all other nations who followed the road we now travel. It's the road to hell, and ours isn't even paved with good intentions.

WTO rules put free-trade of agribusiness above national health concerns

In February, a private organization with unique powers over world industry, trade and agriculture, issued a Preliminary Draft Ruling on a three-year-old case. The case was brought by the Bush Administration in May 2003 against European Union rules hindering the spread of genetically-engineered plants and foods. The WTO ruling, which is to be final in December, will have more influence over life and death on this planet than most imagine.

The ruling was issued by a special three-man tribunal of the World Trade Organization, in Geneva Switzerland. The WTO decision will open the floodgates to the forced introduction of genetically-manipulated plants and food products-- GMO, or genetically-modified organisms as they are technically known-- into the world�s most important agriculture production region, the European Union.

The WTO case arose from a formal complaint filed by the governments of the United States, Canada and Argentina�three of the world�s most GMO-polluted areas.

The WTO three-judge panel, chaired by Christian Haberli, a mid-level Swiss Agriculture Office bureaucrat, ruled that the EU had applied a 'de facto' moratorium on approvals of GMO products between June 1999 and August 2003, contradicting Brussels' claim that no such moratorium existed. The WTO judges argued the EU was �guilty� of not following EU rules, causing �undue delay� in following WTO obligations.

The secretive WTO tribunal also ruled, according to the leaked document, that in terms of product-specific measures, the completion of formal EU government approval to plant specific GMO plants had also been unduly delayed in the cases of 24 of 27 specific GMO products that the European Commission in Brussels had before it.

The WTO tribunal recommended that the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB), the world trade policeman, call on the EU to bring its practices �into conformity with its obligations under the (WTO�s) SPS Agreement.� Failure to comply with WTO demands can result in hundreds of millions dollars in annual fines.

Trade �ber Alles

SPS stands for Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. On the surface it sounds as if health concerns were part of the WTO considerations. The reality is the opposite. Only minimal health standards are to be allowed to be enforced under WTO free trade rules, and any nation attempting anything more strict, such as the EU ban on import of US hormone-fed beef, can be found guilty by WTO of an �unfair restraint of trade.�

Today the EU must pay a fine of $150 million yearly to maintain its ban on the US hormone-fed beef. WTO rules in effect put free-trade interests of agribusiness above national health concerns. That means, de facto, that the EU Commission must complete its approval process for the 24 outstanding applications to plant GMO crops in Europe once the final ruling is made later this year.

That will mean a flood of new GMO products in EU agriculture. Monsanto, Syngenta and other GMO multinationals have already taken advantage of lax national rules in new EU member countries such as Poland to get the GMO �foot-in-the door.� Now it will be far easier for them. Pro-GMO governments such as that of Angela Merkel in Germany can claim they are only following WTO �orders.�

What is the significance of this WTO ruling, assuming it remains as is in final form by December? It represents a major, dangerous wedge into largely GMO-free EU agriculture, permitting powerful agribusiness multinationals such as Monsanto, Dow Chemicals or DuPont to overrun national or regional efforts to halt the march of GMO. For this reason, it is potentially the most damaging decision in the history of world trade agreements.

A strategic Washington matter

The case first came before the World Trade Organization in a filing made by the Bush Administration in May 2003, just as the military occupation of Iraq was entering a new phase. The US President held a rare press conference to tell the world that the US was formally charging the EU, accusing the EU �moratorium� on GMO approval of being a cause of starvation in Africa. Their twisted logic argued that so long as a major industrialized region such as the EU resisted planting GMO crops domestically, it caused sceptical African governments to harden their resistance to US food aid in the form of GMO crops. That, Bush charged, was causing unnecessary �starvation� in Africa because some countries refused USDA food aid in form of GMO crop surpluses.

The issue of breaking resistance barriers in the European Union to the proliferation of GMO crops has been a matter of the highest strategic priority for those controlling policy in Washington since 1992 when then-President George H.W. Bush, the father of the current President, issued an Executive Order proclaiming GMO plants such as soybeans or GMO corn to be �substantially equivalent� to ordinary corn or soybeans, and, therefore, not needing any special health safety study or testing.

That �substantial equivalence� ruling by President Bush in 1992 opened the floodgates to the unregulated spread of GMO across the American agriculture landscape. As basis for its 2003 WTO filing against the EU, Washington, on behalf of agribusiness interests including Monsanto, Dow, DuPont and others, charged the EU with violation of the American �substantial equivalence� doctrine!

So long as the world�s second most powerful agriculture trade region, the EU, firmly resisted the introduction of untested GM plants, the global spread of the GMO revolution would remain strategically crippled. For the past decades, breaking up the system of domestic agriculture protection of the EU, centered around its Common Agriculture Program, has been a strategic political and trade goal of the US Government and US-based agribusiness. The creation of the WTO in 1995, a result of the GATT Uruguay Round trade talks during the 1980�s, opened the possibility for the first time of forcing the EU to drop its defenses on US threat of sanctions.

The secret process behind WTO

When the final WTO Panel ruling is published and official this coming December, assuming no major changes take place in the 1,050 page preliminary ruling of February 7, a major barrier to the global spread of largely untested and highly unstable genetically modified foods will be gone. This will become unstoppable, as it was in the USA, unless political pressure from a sceptical European population forces the EU Commission to pay a WTO fine or penalty, in lieu of acceding to the demands of the WTO.

It�s relevant to ask what is this body, WTO which exercises such enormous power over laws of nations? What is its mandate and who controls its policies?

The negotiations of world trade since the establishment of the Bretton Woods postwar monetary system at the end of World War II, had been made through a General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), a series of trade rounds on specific issues between specific member countries. In September 1986, on US-led pressure, the Uruguay Round of GATT was launched in Punta del Este Uruguay. The result was creation of a new, powerful private international agency, the WTO.

In late 1994 the US Congress voted to join the WTO, the new permanent trade body established by the GATT Uruguay Round. There was almost no debate. It was clear in Washington who would dominate the new body. Unlike GATT which had no enforcement power, and which required unanimous member vote for sanctions, the WTO would be given tough sanction and enforcement powers. More important, how it reached decisions was to remain secret, with no democratic oversight. The most vital issues of economic life on the planet were to be decided behind closed doors in Geneva WTO headquarters or in Washington and Brussels. It could choose its �experts� as it saw fit and ignore what evidence it saw fit. In the EU GMO dispute, three of four initial scientific experts chosen were from either US or UK institutions, two countries most in favour of GMO. (1)

Two years earlier, in 1992, at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Rio, 175 UN governments signed a convention to on the safe handling and treatment of GMOs, a major vote of the world community to examine the health and economic impacts of GMO agriculture before it could be allowed in a country. The US Government of President George Bush Sr. aggressively opposed the CBD, arguing that a Biosafety Protocol was unnecessary. Under the CBD agreement, a country could prohibit GMO imports.

The GMO industry, led by Monsanto, DuPont and Dow of the US, sabotaged this agreement. A group of six countries controlling the world Biotech or GMO market�Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, Australia Chile and USA-- forced a clause into the CBD text which would subordinate the Biosafety Protocol to the WTO. They argued that limiting trade based on �unproven� biosafety concerns should be considered a �barrier to trade� under WTO rules!

Traditional liability law holds that a new product must first be proven safe before being allowed on market. This WTO rule placing the burden of proof not on the producer of a new GMO product, but on the potential victims, turned prudence and health safety issues on its head. In the end the US destroyed the Biosafety Protocol by refusing to include soybeans and corn, 99% of all GMO products, making the Protocol near worthless regarding GMO health issues.

The WTO serves as the weapon for the powerful coalition of Washington and the powerful private GMO giants, led by Monsanto. Earlier in 1992, Bush, on advice of Monsanto and the emerging US GM giant companies, ruled that GM organisms were �substantially equivalent� to ordinary seeds for soybeans or corn and such. As �substantially equivalent,� GM seeds required no special testing or health controls before being put on the market. This was crucial to the future of Monsanto and the GMO lobby.

By Presidential Executive Order, the US had defined GMO seeds as harmless and hence not needing to be regulated for health and safety. It made sure this principle was carried over into the new WTO in the form of the WTO�s Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS), which stated, �Food standards and measures aimed at protecting people from pests or animals can potentially be used as a deliberate barrier to trade.� The US charge against the EU in the present GMO dispute charged the EU with violation of the SPS agreement of WTO.

Other WTO rules in the Agreement to Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) forbid member countries from using domestic standards or testing, food safety laws, product standards, calling them an �unfair barrier to trade.�

The impact of those two US-mandated WTO rulings meant that Washington could threaten that any government restricting import of GM plants on grounds they might pose threats to health and safety of their population, could be found to be in violation of WTO free trade rules!

This is what the US Government, on behalf of its agribusiness private corporations has done against the EU restrictions on GMO.

Under the WTO�s Technical Barriers to Trade, the US has argued that no labelling of GMO plants was required, as the plants have not been �substantially transformed� from normal or non-GM soya, corn or other plants. This conveniently ignored the fact that Washington simultaneously insisted that GMOs, due to the genetic engineering process, are sufficiently transformed, i.e. NOT equivalent, to be patented as �original�, and protected under WTO TRIPS intellectual property patent rights. (2).

The Agreement on Agriculture

The heart of the WTO machinery is the WTO Agreement on Agriculture (AoA), which under the sheep�s wool of �free trade,� hides the wolf of private agri-business GMO monopoly power. Under AoA rules, since 1995 poorer developing countries have been forced to eliminate quotas and slash protective tariffs, at the same time the Bush Administration voted to increase its subsidies to US agribusiness farming by $80 billions.

The net effect has been to allow the powerful monopoly of five grain trading giants�Cargill, ADM, Bunge, Andre (formerly) and Louis Dreyfus�to dramatically increase the dumping of food commodities globally, ruining millions of family farmers worldwide in the process, while maximizing their private corporate profits.

The AoA of WTO ignores the reality of agriculture markets which are qualitatively different from, say, the market for cars or CD�s. Agriculture and national food safety and security are at the heart of a nation�s sovereignty, and its obligation to its own citizens to support the basics of life. Agriculture is unique in this respect, along with water rights.

The AoA was written by the US-dominated agribusiness giants such as Cargill, ADM, Monsanto and DuPont, to serve the agenda of these global supranational private companies, whose sole aim is to maximize profits and market monopoly, regardless of human consequences. Their focus is the domination of the $1 trillion global agriculture trade. The actual author of the AoA of WTO was Daniel Amstutz, a former Vice President of Cargill Grain, who was at the time in the Washington US Trade Representative�s Office, before going back to the grain trade.(3).

Who controls WTO?

The essential control of WTO decisions, decisions which have the full power of international law and can force governments to repeal local laws for health, safety and such is held by private interests, by a global US-centered agribusiness cartel. There are no public or democratic checks on the power of WTO.

On paper, WTO rules are made by a consensus of all 134 member countries. In reality, four countries, led by the United States, decide all important agriculture and other trade issues. As in the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, Washington exercises decisive control behind the scenes. And it does so in the interest of the private agribusiness cartel.

The four WTO controlling countries, known as the QUAD countries, are USA, Canada, Japan and the EU. In the QUAD, in turn, the giant agri-business multinationals exercise controlling influence, most clearly in Washington.

The WTO is designed to impose the wishes of giant private companies over the legitimate democratic will of entire nations and duly-elected governments. WTO has one mission: enforce rules of a �free trade,� an agenda which is in no way genuinely �free� but rather suits the needs of agribusiness giants.

Under the secretive WTO rules, countries can challenge another�s laws for restricting their trade. The case is then heard by a tribunal or court of three trade bureaucrats. They are usually influential corporate lawyers with pro-free trade bias. The lawyers have no conflict of interest rules binding them, such that a Monsanto lawyer can rule on a case of material interest to Monsanto.

Further, there is no rule that the judges of WTO respect any national laws of any country. The three judges meet in secret without revealing the time or location. All court documents are confidential and are not published unless one party releases it. It is a modern version of the Spanish Inquisition, but with far more power.

The EU banned the import of US beef treated with growth and other hormones, and the US lodged a formal WTO complaint. There was a long report from independent scientists showing that the hormones added to US beef were �cancer-causing�. The WTO three judge panel ruled that the EU did not present a �valid� scientific case to refuse import, and the EU was forced to pay $150 million annually for lost US profits. (4).

The powerful private interests who control WTO agriculture policy prefer to remain in the background as little-publicized NGO�s. One of the most influential in creating the WTO is a little-publicized organization called the IPC-- the International Food and Agricultural Trade Policy Council, shortened to International Policy Council.

The IPC was created in 1987 to lobby for the GATT agriculture rules of WTO at the Uruguay GATT talks. The IPC demanded removal of �high tariff� barriers in developing countries, remaining silent on the massive government subsidy to agribusiness in the USA.

A look at the IPC membership explains what interests it represents. The IPC Chairman is Robert Thompson, former Assistant Secretary US Department of Agriculture and former Presidential economic adviser. Also included in the IPC are Bernard Auxenfans, Chief Operating Officer, Monsanto Global Agricultural Company and Past Chairman of Monsanto Europe S.A.; Allen Andreas of ADM/Toepfer; Andrew Burke of Bunge (US); Dale Hathaway former USDA official and head IFPRI (US).

Other IPC members include Heinz Imhof, chairman of Syngenta (CH); Rob Johnson of Cargill and USDA Agriculture Policy Advisory Council; Franz Fischler Former Commissioner for Agriculture, European Commission; Guy Legras (France) former EU Director General Agriculture; Donald Nelson of Kraft Foods (US); Joe O�Mara of USDA, Hiroshi Shiraiwa of Mitsui & Co Japan; Jim Starkey former Assistant US Trade Representative; Hans Joehr, Nestle�s head of agriculture; Jerry Steiner of Monsanto (US). Members Emeritus include Ann Veneman, herself a board member of a Monsanto subsidiary company before she became US Secretary of Agriculture for George W. Bush in 2001.

The IPC is controlled by US-based agribusiness giants which benefit from the rules they drafted for WTO trade. In Washington itself, the USDA no longer represents interests of small family farmers. It is the lobby of giant global agribusiness. The USDA is a revolving door for these private agribusiness giants to shape friendly policies. GMO policy is the most blatant example.

Brussels also dominated by GMO lobby

The power of the giant GMO companies and US-centered agribusiness companies extends to control of key policies in Brussels at the European Commission. Typical is the fact that former EU Agricuolture Commissioner Franz Fischler is a member of the powerful pro-GMO IPC.

For years it has been common knowledge among EU farm experts that grain policy was not set by national governments but by the Big Five private grain traders led by Cargill and ADM. Now the powerful weight of Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta and the GMO lobby has been added. This is clear in the recent announcement of a new EU program, SAFEFOODS, a successor to the controversial pro-GMO ENTRANSFOOD project. ENTRANSFOOD was set up to �facilitate market introduction of GMO�s in Europe, and therefore to bring the European (sic) industry into a competitive position.�

ENTRANSFOOD, now called the more innocuous SAFEFOODS, claims to combine different views on GMO food. In reality, its key Working Group 1, responsible for �Safety Testing of Transgenic Foods� consists of representatives not from independent consumer organizations, but from Monsanto, Unilever, Bayer Corp., Syngenta and BIBRA International, a consultancy close to agribusiness and the pharmaceutical industry.

As well, Dr. Harry Kuiper, a Dutch scientist member of the food safety GMO group of SAFEFOODS in Brussels, is Coordinator of SAFEFOODS. Kuiper chairs the EU European Food Safety Authority GMO Panel. He also has also been leading the vicious slander attack campaign to discredit genetic scientist Dr Arpad Pusztai who dared to go public with alarming evidence of organ damage from rats fed GMO potatoes and was fired on the intervention of Monsanto in 1999.(5).

The WTO today is nothing more than the global policeman for the powerful GMO lobby and the agribusiness firms tied to it.

With the new German coalition government under Chancellor Angela Merkel and Agriculture Minister Horst Seehofer now officially on record supporting the role of Germany as a future leader in biotech crops and GMO, the impact of the latest WTO ruling on food safety in the EU and beyond has put European and hence, world food safety world in danger.

Subject: Meeting Doctor Doom

Recently citizen scientist Forrest Mims told me about a speech he heard at the Texas Academy of Science during which the speaker, a world-renowned ecologist, advocated for the extermination of 90 percent of the human species in a most horrible and painful manner. Apparently at the speaker's direction, the speech was not video taped by the Academy and so Forrest's may be the only record of what was said. Forrest's account of what he witnessed chilled my soul. Astonishingly, Forrest reports that many of the Academy members present gave the speaker a standing ovation. To date, the Academy has not moved to sanction the speaker or distance itself from the speaker's remarks.

If the professional community has lost its sense of moral outrage when one if their own openly calls for the slow and painful extermination of over 5 billion human beings, then it falls upon the amateur community to be the conscience of science.

Meeting Doctor Doom

There is always something special about science meetings. The 109th meeting of the Texas Academy of Science at Lamar University in Beaumont on 3-5 March 2006 was especially exciting for me, because a student and his professor presented the results of a DNA study I suggested to them last year. How fulfilling to see the baldcypress ( Taxodium distichum ) leaves we collected last summer and my tree ring photographs transformed into a first class scientific presentation that's nearly ready to submit to a scientific journal (Brian Iken and Dr. Deanna McCullough, "Bald Cypress of the Texas Hill Country: Taxonomically Unique?" 109th Meeting of the Texas Academy of Science Program and Abstracts [ PDF ], Poster P59, p. 84, 2006).

But there was a gravely disturbing side to that otherwise scientifically significant meeting, for I watched in amazement as a few hundred members of the Texas Academy of Science rose to their feet and gave a standing ovation to a speech that enthusiastically advocated the elimination of 90 percent of Earth's population by airborne Ebola. The speech was given by Dr. Eric R. Pianka (Fig. 1), the University of Texas evolutionary ecologist and lizard expert who the Academy named the 2006 Distinguished Texas Scientist.

Something curious occurred a minute before Pianka began speaking. An official of the Academy approached a video camera operator at the front of the auditorium and engaged him in animated conversation. The camera operator did not look pleased as he pointed the lens of the big camera to the ceiling and slowly walked away.

This curious incident came to mind a few minutes later when Professor Pianka began his speech by explaining that the general public is not yet ready to hear what he was about to tell us. Because of many years of experience as a writer and editor, Pianka's strange introduction and the TV camera incident raised a red flag in my mind. Suddenly I forgot that I was a member of the Texas Academy of Science and chairman of its Environmental Science Section. Instead, I grabbed a notepad so I could take on the role of science reporter.

One of Pianka's earliest points was a condemnation of anthropocentrism, or the idea that humankind occupies a privileged position in the Universe. He told a story about how a neighbor asked him what good the lizards are that he studies. He answered, �What good are you?�

Pianka hammered his point home by exclaiming, �We're no better than bacteria!�

Pianka then began laying out his concerns about how human overpopulation is ruining the Earth. He presented a doomsday scenario in which he claimed that the sharp increase in human population since the beginning of the industrial age is devastating the planet. He warned that quick steps must be taken to restore the planet before it's too late.

Saving the Earth with Ebola

Professor Pianka said the Earth as we know it will not survive without drastic measures. Then, and without presenting any data to justify this number, he asserted that the only feasible solution to saving the Earth is to reduce the population to 10 percent of the present number.

He then showed solutions for reducing the world's population in the form of a slide depicting the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War and famine would not do, he explained. Instead, disease offered the most efficient and fastest way to kill the billions that must soon die if the population crisis is to be solved.

Pianka then displayed a slide showing rows of human skulls, one of which had red lights flashing from its eye sockets.

AIDS is not an efficient killer, he explained, because it is too slow. His favorite candidate for eliminating 90 percent of the world's population is airborne Ebola ( Ebola Reston ), because it is both highly lethal and it kills in days, instead of years. However, Professor Pianka did not mention that Ebola victims die a slow and torturous death as the virus initiates a cascade of biological calamities inside the victim that eventually liquefy the internal organs.

After praising the Ebola virus for its efficiency at killing, Pianka paused, leaned over the lectern, looked at us and carefully said, �We've got airborne 90 percent mortality in humans. Killing humans. Think about that.�

With his slide of human skulls towering on the screen behind him, Professor Pianka was deadly serious. The audience that had been applauding some of his statements now sat silent.

After a dramatic pause, Pianka returned to politics and environmentalism. But he revisited his call for mass death when he reflected on the oil situation.

�And the fossil fuels are running out,� he said, �so I think we may have to cut back to two billion, which would be about one-third as many people.� So the oil crisis alone may require eliminating two-third's of the world's population.

How soon must the mass dying begin if Earth is to be saved? Apparently fairly soon, for Pianka suggested he might be around when the killer disease goes to work. He was born in 1939, and his lengthy obituary appears on his web site.

When Pianka finished his remarks, the audience applauded. It wasn't merely a smattering of polite clapping that audiences diplomatically reserve for poor or boring speakers. It was a loud, vigorous and enthusiastic applause.

Questions for Dr. Doom

Then came the question and answer session, in which Professor Pianka stated that other diseases are also efficient killers.

The audience laughed when he said, �You know, the bird flu's good, too.� They laughed again when he proposed, with a discernable note of glee in his voice that, �We need to sterilize everybody on the Earth.�

After noting that the audience did not represent the general population, a questioner asked, "What kind of reception have you received as you have presented these ideas to other audiences that are not representative of us?"

Pianka replied, "I speak to the converted!"

Pianka responded to more questions by condemning politicians in general and Al Gore by name, because they do not address the population problem and "...because they deceive the public in every way they can to stay in power."

He spoke glowingly of the police state in China that enforces their one-child policy. He said, "Smarter people have fewer kids." He said those who don't have a conscience about the Earth will inherit the Earth, "...because those who care make fewer babies and those that didn't care made more babies." He said we will evolve as uncaring people, and "I think IQs are falling for the same reason, too."

With this, the questioning was over. Immediately almost every scientist, professor and college student present stood to their feet and vigorously applauded the man who had enthusiastically endorsed the elimination of 90 percent of the human population. Some even cheered. Dozens then mobbed the professor at the lectern to extend greetings and ask questions. It was necessary to wait a while before I could get close enough to take some photographs (Fig. 1).

I was assigned to judge a paper in a grad student competition after the speech. On the way, three professors dismissed Pianka as a crank. While waiting to enter the competition room, a group of a dozen Lamar University students expressed outrage over the Pianka speech.

Yet five hours later, the distinguished leaders of the Texas Academy of Science presented Pianka with a plaque in recognition of his being named 2006 Distinguished Texas Scientist. When the banquet hall filled with more than 400 people responded with enthusiastic applause, I walked out in protest.

Corresponding with Dr. Doom

Recently I exchanged a number of e-mails with Pianka. I pointed out to him that one might infer his death wish was really aimed at Africans, for Ebola is found only in Central Africa. He replied that Ebola does not discriminate, kills everyone and could spread to Europe and the the Americas by a single infected airplane passenger.

In his last e-mail, Pianka wrote that I completely fail to understand his arguments. So I did a check and found verification of my interpretation of his remarks on his own web site. In a student evaluation of a 2004 course he taught, one of Professor Pianka's students wrote, "Though I agree that convervation [sic] biology is of utmost importance to the world, I do not think that preaching that 90% of the human population should die of ebola [sic] is the most effective means of encouraging conservation awareness." Yet the majority of his student reviews were favorable, with one even saying, � I worship Dr. Pianka.�

The 45-minute lecture before the Texas Academy of Science converted a university biology senior into a Pianka disciple, who then published a blog that seriously supports Pianka's mass death wish.

Dangerous Times

Let me now remove my reporter's hat for a moment and tell you what I think. We live in dangerous times. The national security of many countries is at risk. Science has become tainted by highly publicized cases of misconduct and fraud.

Must now we worry that a Pianka-worshipping former student might someday become a professional biologist or physician with access to the most deadly strains of viruses and bacteria? I believe that airborne Ebola is unlikely to threaten the world outside of Central Africa. But scientists have regenerated the 1918 Spanish flu virus that killed 50 million people. There is concern that small pox might someday return. And what other terrible plagues are waiting out there in the natural world to cross the species barrier and to which scientists will one day have access?

Meanwhile, I still can't get out of my mind the pleasant spring day in Texas when a few hundred scientists of the Texas Academy of Science gave a standing ovation for a speaker who they heard advocate for the slow and torturous death of over five billion human beings.

Dealing with Doctor Doom

Forrest M. Mims III has reported in a Special Feature in The Citizen Scientist ("Meeting Dr. Doom," 31 March 2006) on a lecture he recently heard at a meeting of the Texas Academy of Science. The Academy chose to honor one Professor Eric R. Pianka, an eminent ecologist who studies desert ecologies, with its 2006 Distinguished Texas Scientist Scientist award. Professor Pianka used the occasion to champion the notion, apparently without sanction of the Academy, that the Earth can only be saved if ninety percent of the human beings alive today are purged form the planet. He championed airborne Ebola as the most efficient virus to accomplish this. And while he stopped short of calling for terrorist action to bring this result about, he clearly implied that this was a right and proper future for our species and our planet. Astonishingly, after advocating for a future in which more than 5,000,000,000 persons would die a slow and agonizing death, many members of the Texas Academy of Science stood to their feet and applauded.

I want to answer two questions here. Do academic institutions like the Texas Academy of Science have a duty to provide Professor Pianka a forum to advance these ideas? And what might the consequences be of allowing him to do so? My answer to the first question is a resounding "no." Furthermore, I am convinced that continuing to allow Professor Pianka unfettered access to impressionable students could one day lead to a loss of life that could make the Killing Fields of Southeast Asia look like a picnic ground.

Let me explain.

First, do Pianka's opinions deserve protection under the rubric of academic freedom? Well, that depends on whether this ideas are truly academic�that is, that they are consistent with the best understanding of our world that science has established.

Now consider Pianka's arguments.

Pianka claims that the natural world would be "better off" if there weren't so many humans. To see if that's true, we have to figure out just what constitutes the "natural world"? As an evolutionist, I see human beings as the products of the same natural forces that shaped all other life on earth. Our brains evolved on this planet subject to the same kinds of natural selection pressures as those that shaped peacock feathers. The same can be said of all of our social structures, our religions and every other aspect of what we are that helped us secure resources and propagate our species (the hammer and anvil of natural selection). In short, our institutions and our technology are every bit as much a part of the natural world as elk mating rituals and beaver dams. In fact, by evolving the ability to adapt the world to fit us , human beings have become better at securing resources and procreating than any other vertebrate on the planet. By this measure, we are evolution's most successful creation (amongst vertebrates). If extraterrestrials were asked to select nature's most successful vertebrate on the Earth they would certainly point to us.

So it seems very strange to me for an evolutionist to identify one of evolution's most successful creations as somehow operating outside the natural order. To do so is to deny this undeniable truth of evolution.

Pianka, however, is an evolutionist who believes that humanity is not part of the natural world. Somehow, the fact our evolution led us to a point whereby we can adapt our environment to our bodies, rather than wait for our bodies to adapt to our environment, puts us in an inferior position in nature. In his mind, Homo sapiens are the despoilers, the corruptors of the natural order. This viewpoint is every bit as anthropocentric as those who would place humans in a superior position, saying that we are the "pinnacle of evolution" or "chosen by God." Only instead of lauding humanity's position in nature, Pianka denigrates it. Evolution supports neither camp.

Pianka is, of course, free to ignore the evidence and believe that humanity is, as he says, the "scourge" on the natural world. But this is a political opinion based on some vision he holds in his mind about the way the world ought to be. It is not a scientific fact. Indeed, it is a glaring scientific fallacy.

Pianka also argues that human beings are now so densely populated that they provide an idea vector for disease transmission, and he expects that microbes will "ultimately purge the Earth of the scourge of humanity." (Personal correspondence with Forrest Mims.)

The data stand utterly against this idea. Plagues have run rampant through human populations throughout time. Millions have died. Huge fractions of some populations have been wiped out. But the net death rate has never come close to the fractions that Pianka envisions. Virulent diseases that kill quickly tend to burn themselves out. Natural selection creates less lethal varieties because an organism can't spread if it kills its host before it can propagate. The flu pandemic of 1918 (the influenza virus is championed by Pianka) may have killed 50 million people, but that was only about 5 percent of those infected. Moreover, every year sees medical advancements�screening techniques improve, as do our methods of creating new vaccines and treating illness of all kinds. Not only that, a desperate situation would be met by desperate measures, including the implementation of martial law, the halting of all air and ground traffic except for emergency vehicles and so on, to stop contagion.

In short, there is no historical precedent that supports the notion that humanity could be ninety percent depopulated by a single disease. Moreover, as time goes on and our technology and awareness grows, the risk to humanity is steadily falling. Professor Pianka can believe that microbes will depopulate the earth if he wants, and such alarmist nonsense by some Ph.D.s sells lots of books. However, Pianka's viewpoint runs contrary to the best science.

Since neither of Pianka's foundational assertions are consistent with the best interpretation of the scientific evidence, his opinions on these matters are merely political rants. They therefore do not deserve protection under the doctrine of academic freedom, and scientific institutions like the Texas Academy of Science should have no problem refusing to provide speakers of his ilk a platform to publicly advance these positions.

The Society for Amateur Scientists would certainly not allow such ideas to be promulgated in any forum that we operate, and we hereby call on all other scientific institutions of conscious to do likewise.

Professor Pianka's Death Wish

But all this begs an important question. How could such an eminent ecologist, as Eric R. Pianka clearly is, be so solidly on the side of absurdity and death? His on online "obituary" is an independent indication of his fascination with death. This document, which is actually a brief autobiography, provides some important clues.

Professor Pianka describes himself as both a "hermit" and a "desert rat" who has spent years living in total isolation in various deserts while devoted to his studies of lizard ecology.

Now, what kind of man could forsake the company of his own kind for years? I certainly couldn't. Humans are, after all, communal animals. We are biologically programmed to seek out the company�the love and support and companionship�of our own species, and I feel that need very strongly. A happy hermit simply must not strongly feel this basic drive that lies at the very foundation of our sense of community and of our own humanity.

I can only conclude that years ago Eric Pianka must have lost touch with his essential humanity, that is, a strong emotional need for his own kind. Now, perhaps driven by that terrible depression that can occur in old men, he seems to have lost touch with reality.

I offer this under the touchstone of Ockham's razor: I think that depression provides the least remarkable explanation for Pianka's mental descent. According to his "obit," Professor Pianka was born in 1939, and depression can be a side effect of aging, especially in men. Moreover, men often express their depression by becoming angry at the world�the "grumpy old man" syndrome. And elderly depressed men often become fixated on death. Finally, these men often refuse to admit they have a problem, and so depressed men in Pianka's age group rarely seek treatment.

If this explanation is the right one, then he needs to be treated by a psychopharmacologist with expertise in depression. Until he does receive the necessary care, we must think of him as a person in pain, and as such Professor Pianka is certainly deserving of all of our compassion. But we must not allow our compassion to move us to complacency in light of grave and immediate danger of his message.

The Piankians

Some of my friends would prefer to simply dismiss Professor Pianka's philosophy as merely the rantings of an old coot; a wild-eyed mountain man who's compassion and judgment have deteriorated with age and long exposure to the torments of the desert sun. After all, they point out, the good doctor hasn't actually called for acts of terrorism. He hasn't declared that he wants people to bring about the painful deaths of over 5,000,000,000 human beings.

True enough. Professor Pianka has never, so far as I know, advocated that human beings should act to bring about the depopulation of the planet. He says only that he thinks that it will happen, that it has to happen if the earth is too survive, and he strongly implies that he thinks it would be a good thing if it did happen. So, is Pianka really a dangerous man?

Sadly, I think he is. You see, I'm old enough to remember another desert-living child of the '60s who once had followers. And Professor Pianka is much more charismatic than Charlie Manson ever was. Moreover, Pianka has access to captive audiences of impressionable young students in his college classes and lectures.

Will Pianka one day have his own "family" of followers living in the wild with him? Who is to say? But for an interesting take on this question, consider this blog post (scroll down to 9 March) by a new and young Piankian who became converted at his Texas Academy of Science lecture.

I simply remember history. Adolph Hitler did not invent social ideologies based on hatred of the Jews. He pulled the core of Nazi philosophy from certain influential German philosophers. Rather, Hitler's "final solution" merely took these perverted ideas farther than those philosophers could have imagined any sane person would take them.

I believe, with the terrible experience of the bloodiest century in human history behind us, that all men and women of conscious in the 2001st century must be proactive in our opposition to genocidal or apocalyptic philosophies before they have the chance to inspire some new champion with the will to take their conclusions to the next step.

The "Scourge" of the Earth

The more people who believe Professor Pianka's philosophy that humanity is the "scourge" of the earth, and that the earth would be better off if 5,000,000,000 of us were to die a painful death, the longer men and women of conscious allow this idea to go unchallenged, the greater is the likelihood some disturbed people will take it upon themselves to try to help realize that vision.

And there is plenty of precedent.

Do you recall the Egyptian Airline copilot who committed suicide by crashing a commercial airliner full of passengers into the Atlantic? What about the AIDS-infected dentist who became so depressed about his condition and angry with the world that he inoculated innocent patients with that terrible virus? Think about all the murder-suicides committed each year. Do you remember that California doomsday cult lead by an old cancer-riddled guru who convinced his followers that they could to ride a comet to Heaven? Snipers in clock towers� terrorist bombers� all people who were willing to kill themselves and many others because of some misguided notion that they were serving a higher cause.

So what if some Piankian disciple�a former student, perhaps, who works in a biological research or weapons laboratory�gains access to a deadly pathogen? What if that person becomes clinically depressed? His wife divorces him, his child dies, he discovers he's dying of cancer� Do you think a depressed and angry Piankian just might convince himself that releasing that agent would be a great service to the higher cause of saving the Earth? Do you think he might be able to infect himself, and then use his own body as the vector to infect others?

I do, too.

And that is why we cannot afford to ignore when academics stand and applaud a man who they just heard openly advocate that the world would be better off if over 5,000,000,000 human beings were to die as a result of a horrible disease.

The Citizen Scientist Community Must Respond

When the professional scientists have lost their sense of moral outrage of such ideologies, then it falls to America 's great community of citizen scientists to be the conscious of science. If we do nothing when others stand and applaud ideologies of pseudoscience and death, then history will hold us all to account for our failure to shake the very rafters in support of truth and human life.

Professor Pianka's ideas are horrifically and dangerously wrong. And they must be struggled against. I urge every reader of The Citizen Scientist to voice their serious concern over this matter in letters and phone calls to the Regents of the University of Texas and to the President of the Texas Academy of Science.
