CANCUN, Mexico, March 30 (Reuters) -

U.S. President George W. Bush reassured Mexican President Vicente Fox on
Thursday he was committed to getting the U.S. Congress to approve broad
immigration reforms, including a guest-worker program.
Speaking after talks with Fox in the Mexican resort of Cancun, Bush told
reporters, "I'm confident we can get a bill done." He made no prediction
on the timing of such legislation, which the U.S. Senate started
debating on Wednesday.
Bush also praised Fox for pledging to do more to police the U.S.-Mexican
border, the crossing point for most illegal immigrants entering the
United States.
"I'm committed to having a comprehensive immigration bill on my desk,
and by comprehensive I mean not only border security ... a bill that has
security enforcement in it, but a bill that has a worker permit program
in it," Bush said.
Hosting a North American summit, Fox said border security was a shared
responsibility and Mexico would do its part.
Mexicans account for more than half of the estimated 12 million illegal
immigrants in the United States.
"We want a safe border. We want it for the good of our people and also
for our relationship with the United States," Fox said.
Joining the two leaders was new Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper,
a fellow conservative who wants to improve relations with Washington
after friction during the government of his Liberal predecessor, Paul
Martin.
Despite an increase in anti-U.S. feeling in Latin America in recent
years, there were few protests in the resort, which is far from major
Mexican cities and too expensive for most Mexicans to stay in.

Said priest Romualdo May, dipping herbs into water and sprinkling it
into the air.

Republicans are split over whether to back Bush's call for sweeping
reforms to create a guest worker program and put several million illegal
immigrants on the path to citizenship.
Conservatives in Bush's party, normally his allies, reject that as a
form of amnesty and seek instead to erect a fence along a third of the
U.S.-Mexican border and make illegal immigration a felony. The issue has
brought out tens of thousands of mostly Hispanic protesters in major
U.S. cities.
With his job approval ratings at a low ebb, immigration is a new test of
Bush's political strength.
Fox, who has failed for five years to convince Washington to let more
Mexicans get jobs in the United States legally, is making one more push
before leaving office in December.
He said Mexico would extradite 24 drug suspects sought by U.S. law
enforcement within a few weeks as part of a new program to send cartel
members to the United States for trial.
Bush, Fox and Harper toured hot, dusty ruins at the Mayan archeological
site of Chichen Itza ahead of their meetings.
But the leaders climbed only a few of the 91 steps of the impressive El
Castillo pyramid.
It was a rare sightseeing detour for Bush, who usually keeps to a tight
diplomatic schedule, and raised speculation he was trying to revive a
back-slapping relationship with Fox that saw them dubbed "the two
amigos" at the start of their administrations.
Bush and Harper agreed to open talks on a long-running trade dispute
over Canadian exports of softwood lumber and the Canadian leader spoke
frankly about past diplomatic discord.
"Iraq in particular has been a source of some disagreement, some
tensions," Harper said. But he praised the role of the U.S. and British
military in the recent freeing of Canadian hostages in Iraq, saying:
"This reminds us that when the chips are down, we all come together to
support each other."
Mexicans once had high hopes for Bush, who took office promising to make
America's southern neighbor a priority but pushed the region to a back
burner after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Atlanta, GA, Mar. 24 (UPI) -- The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention has begun a series of
experiments to see how likely the bird flu virus could
result in a human pandemic.

The six-month series of experiments seeks to simulate
the mixing and matching of genes from the H5N1 avian
flu virus that has plagued Asia and a common human flu
virus that public-health experts fear could turn avian
flu into a pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported
Thursday.

CDC scientists inside an ultra-secure laboratory have
started swapping the genes of the H5N1 avian virus
with the genes of an H3N2 virus, the strain behind
most recent human flu outbreaks.

The goal is to substitute the eight genes of each
virus, one by one, with the eight genes from the other
virus to see which of more than 250 possible
combinations create flu viruses that could spread
easily among humans.

The work responds to fears by global public health
experts that the bird flu virus could mutate to form
one that could spawn a global outbreak of the disease.

John Reid demanded sweeping changes to international
law yesterday to free British soldiers from the
restraints of the Geneva conventions and make it
easier for the west to mount military actions against
other states.

In his speech, the defence secretary addressed three
key issues: the treatment of prisoners, when to mount
a pre-emptive strikes, and when to intervene to stop a
humanitarian crisis. In all these areas, he indicated
that the UK and west was being hamstrung by existing
inadequate law.

Mr Reid indicated he believed existing rules,
including some of the conventions - a bedrock of
international law - were out of date and inadequate to
deal with the threat of international terrorists.

"We are finding an enemy which obeys no rules
whatsoever", he said, referring to what he called
"barbaric terrorism".

The conventions, he said, were created more than half
century ago "when the world was almost
unrecognisable". They dealt with how the sick and
injured and how prisoners of war were treated, "and
the obligations on states during their military
occupation of another state", he said.

Given the big changes undertaken by the military over
the past 50 years, he added, "serious questions" must
be asked about whether "further changes in
international law in this area are necessary".

Mr Reid declined to say whether he had come round to
the US view that detainees at Guantánamo bay should
not be allowed the protection of the conventions or
the courts. Similarly, he would not say if he thought
Britain should support the US practice of
extraordinary rendition, the transferring of prisoners
to secret camps where they risk being tortured.
However, he said, it was not "sufficient just to say
[Guantánamo] is wrong".

Mr Reid said yesterday that while domestic laws had
been introduced to deal with new threats - he referred
to the new offence of "glorifying terrorism" -
international law had not changed.

He also spoke of the "concept of imminence" - the
circumstances when a state could strike without
waiting for an attack.

It was a principal issue during the debate over the
invasion of Iraq and has clear implications for any
possible future action against Iran.

Mr Reid noted that last year Lord Goldsmith, the
attorney general, advised that force could be used
only against imminent attack, that it must only be
used as a last resort, and that it must be
proportionate.

"But what if another threat develops?", Mr Reid asked.
"Not al-Qaida. Not Muslim extremism. Something none of
us are thinking about at the moment." Terrorist groups
were trying to acquire weapons of mass destruction, he
said.

The Liberal Democrat defence spokesman, Nick Harvey,
said: "After the disaster of Iraq, the idea that the
doctrine of pre-emptive strike should be expanded will
be met with incredulity in the west and alarm in the
ministries of Tehran."

Sir Adam Roberts, professor of international relations
at Oxford University, said: "Some of the biggest
coalition problems in both Afghanistan and Iraq have
come from failures of the coalition to observe basic
norms on certain matters, especially with regard to
treatment of prisoners.

"Dr Reid is certainly right to raise the question of
whether we need new rules in face of imminent attack.
This problem above all requires confidence in
government and coalition decision-making processes -
confidence that has sadly been undermined by Iraq."

You want some 9/11 truth? You won't find it in the accretions of increasingly absurd conjecture and the tail-chasing diversions of no evidentiary value. The hard-ass, 9/11 truth has the colour of money and the sweet stink of opium, and plenty of both.

How's this for a headline, and from Institutional Investor, even:

Mystery N.Y. Bank Allegedly Funnels $3B In Funds To Terrorists

A bank identified only as being one of the largest and most prominent in New York has been caught allegedly funneling an estimated $3 billion in profits from drug deals and other illegal activities to Mideast terrorists, The New York Post reports. Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, the paper says, plugged the profits pipeline as part of an ongoing investigation of suspected funds flowing through local banks.

In the most recent scheme, according to The Post, the money originating from the so-called "tri-border region" of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, was transferred to an account at the New York bank through a money-transfer company in Uruguay and then on to accounts in the Mideast, where they were distributed over the past two years to the likes of Al-Qaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah. "I can't go out and arrest Osama bin Laden," the 84-year-old Morgenthau told The Post. "But I can try to cut off his money."

"Tri-border region" sound familiar? "Chiggerbit" notes on the RI board that it's a territory in which Sun Myung Moon has recently planted his Unification flag, acquiring the land atop the Guarani aquafer. Moon's 600,000 hectares also happens to be "an enormously strategic point in both the narcotics and arms trades," according to Paraguay's former drug czar, who adds that "the available intelligence clearly shows that the Moon sect is involved in both these enterprises." And "Starroute" adds that Khalil bin Laden, Osama's brother, has business connections in the nearby Brazilian province of Minas Gerais, "an alleged center for training terrorists."

The Post today discloses the identity of the "mystery bank." And guess who:

The Manhattan DA is pursuing a settlement with the Bank of America in a major money-laundering probe of more than $3 billion that flowed from Latin America through one of the bank's accounts to Mideast fanatics, sources said yesterday.

Sources familiar with the case - reported in yesterday's Post - revealed that DA Robert Morgenthau is close to reaching a settlement with the nation's second largest bank. The bank is not being accused of complicity with money-launderers or terrorists, but is facing possible penalties for dealing with an unlicensed money transmitter from Uruguay, sources said.

The bank will be permitted to settle, like Jonathan Bush's Riggs Bank, because to find such institutions complicit would mean the Apocalypse of All Safe Assumptions. It's why September 11th's insider trading scandal, once reported by Bloomberg as "the worst case ever," was made to dry up and blow away, and the data recovery project of "dirty doomsday dealings" made on World Trade Center computers disappeared into the belly of the beast it was intended to investigate.

The money's swearing, and it's swearing at us. Over the fractious din of arguments for missile strikes, demolition and holograms, can you hear it?

Jeff, you're lumping demolition in with holograms now?

Holograms would be an example of what I called in the first paragraph "increasingly absurd conjecture," and demolition a "tail-chasing diversion."

What I mean here by diversion is what I meant a year ago when I quoted JFK assassination researcher Vincent Salandria:

I'm afraid we were misled. All the critics, myself included, were misled very early. I see that now. We spent too much time and effort microanalyzing the details of the assassination when all the time it was obvious, it was blatantly obvious that it was a conspiracy.

The insider-trading "investigation" was buried without military honors when the trail ended at "American institutional investors" who were allegedly above suspicion.

Then there's the bizarre conduct of the nation's Leaders on That Fateful Day, and the entirely-unmentionable wargames.

The corporate media have successfully killed and buried all discussion of these serious issues for the last four-and-a-half years. Now, suddenly, Charlie Sheen gets three nights on CNN to speculate to his heart's content about controlled demolition. Has CNN suddenly joined the revolution? Or are some alarm bells ringing yet?

A serious 9/11 Truth movement would be concentrating on the serious issues and trying to get this stuff properly publicised and investigated instead of spending an eternity poring over sexy photos of pyroclastic clouds.

I should refine my comment above. My issue is not with absurdity but with the distractions of unresolvable pissing matches that bring us no closer to justice. Following the money and the drugs have already uncovered smoking guns, though they're largely neglected for the Rorschach of the smoking towers.

A quick note about the value of "sexy photos" and videos from the Pentagon and WTC collapses: it is much, much easier to introduce someone to the 9/11 Truth movement with visible evidence as opposed to discussions about insider trading and the nefarious history of the Bush/Cheney team.

Yes and the octopus through several of their arms have spent so much money on uncovering how we "tick" and "what buttons to push." They know and it is accepted science that people believe what they see. That is precisely why the false meme of no-Boeing at the Pentagon has the "legs" that it does. That is the why In Plane Site and other flash propaganda pieces are being used to sell that false meme. TPTB(The Powers that Be) knew that there would be Internet head scratching about 9-11, there has even been "trial-run ops" to get the lay of the land (TWA 800). The tactics learned and developed there were then planned for and used in response to 9-11 deconstruction.
Three basic false memes were developed to hang the "hats of contention" upon; 1. No Plane at Pentagon (Effect: To divide researchers and to make 9-11 conspiracy research look "nuts" to folks within the highly charged and very "influential" DC Beltway crowd.) 2. No Planes in NY (Effect: To upset folks in NY on 911 conspiracy research{that is where a big crime occurred-jurisdiction for justice} and thoroughly disgust any survivors' family members from adding their gravitas to uncovering truths) 3. The "Jews" did it. (Effect: A blanket tainting that repells many without any perusal of the issue and allows the "official" story to label its critics as anti-semetic bigots with and agenda not facts and reasoned argument, etc.)

Then these memes help to cover up obvious conspiratorial facts leading to countles hours of blather, emotion, etc. Personally, I am sure that that there was demolition, remote controll technology and patsies involved in the op. And as with any large op, those with their noses in the right place or someone that directs them there, uses the op for their own personal purpose some maybe contrary to the ops planner. For with any action there is always possiblity. No chessmaster wins everytime. There are many editions of SunTzu, etc.

And yes has Jeff said if you follow the money follow the drugs there are smoking guns aplenty. And if you read history you even find that some of the guns have been discovered before, covered-up and then erupt again, go away again, etc.

Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their country.

I hate April 1st. I always have, but more so in recent years, because it might as well be every day now. So much news, both reported and suppressed, seems tailored to make us look like fools for believing we live in a world where such things are possible. But this is our world, or at any rate mine now: a concretization of formerly ungrounded fears into an eff-you reality that parodies what used to pass for paranoia. And since it's a truism of comedy that there are diminishing returns for satirizing a self-parody, what's to become of April 1st?

This Register story, for instance, which now carries the byline April Fool: "Bush Preps Historic Third Term - Memo." While I didn't fall for this one - a term limit serves some still necessary fictions, perhaps the most important being that real power resides in the presidency - it's not surprising that so many, apparently, did. A "draft proposal for a future Executive Order establishing a Continuity Presidency" is no more absurd than Bulldog Gannon's press credentials, or the Vice President shooting a man and joking about it afterwards.

The Register owned up to its prank, but Cannonfire's still playing this one straight: Was Barbara Bush's real father Aleister Crowley?

A sixth-level initiate within the OTO (the Ordo Templi Orientis, the mystical society that Crowely came to head in the 1920s) first set me down this research path by revealing that [Barbara Bush's mother] Pauline Robinson had befriended an woman named Nellie O'Hara, an American adventuress who, at some point during her European travels, met the famed writer Frank Harris. Despite his advancing years, Harris still maintained a reputation for sexual excess that rivaled Crowley's. During this period (1919-1927), Nellie and Frank Harris lived as man and wife, although they could not actually wed because Harris' second wife was still alive and would not grant a divorce.

Nellie's friend Pauline no doubt scandalized her social circle by traveling to France on her own and leaving two very young children in the care of nursemaids. However, her correspondence with her friend -- whose life in France with a famous literary figure must have seemed quite glamorous -- can only have inspired a sense of wanderlust. Her husband, increasingly bound to his duties with the McCall Corporation, did not share this spirit of adventure.

Thus it was that four individuals came together: Frank Harris, Nellie O'Hara, Pauline Pierce [formerly Robinson], and Aleister Crowley. Anyone who has studied Crowley's life will understand that what happened next was, in a sense, inevitable.

Pauline returned to America in early October of 1924. On June 8, 1925, she gave birth to a girl named Barbara. Barbara Pierce married George H.W. Bush, who eventually became the 41st President of the United States.

Many of the details check out, but I haven't found anything yet outside of Cannon's story supporting a link between Barbara's mother Pauline and Nellie O'Hara, let alone between Pauline and Crowley.

I'm not saying it's not true. I'm just saying it sounds too perfect, like a good hoax should. This piece stands out for Joseph Cannon since he doesn't usually pick at the occult aspects of power, and he's also a solid researcher not given to extraordinary claims. So I suppose what I'm really doing is adding the caution that before we repeat "Barbara Bush may be the daughter of Aleister Crowley" we should have more than the word of Cannon's annonymous OTO initiate as reported on April 1st.

Since we've already slipped into a time of attenuated reality in which anything - or at least anything bad - seems possible, we should take particular care about distinguishing fantastic fact from fantasy. For example, I still see The Onion gag from 2000 "Bush 'Refuses To Dignify' Mass-Murder Allegations" sited as a legitimate news story because "highly-regarded independent investigator Sherman H. Skolnick" cribbed from it in 2004. Whatever their previous merit, "investigators" like Skolnick and Tom Flocco seem little more than schlock artists now, serving product to the niche of paranoid entertainment by fabricating elaborate Black Iron Prisons in the air. It's poison to the legitimate inquiry of forbidden subjects, but consumers of conspiracy would rather have the thrill of being scared by a lie than be challenged by the terrible truth, because the truth demands more than our goosebumps.

But damn. I really hate April 1st.

And after I quoted the Art Bell clip, I wrote , in the aftermath of Katrina:

It can still give me goosebumps, especially because it accords with my own tentative conclusions, but it can't rise much above the caution "For entertainment purposes only." The hyperdimensional hypothesis can be explored by physicists like Michio Kaku and UFOlogists like Jacques Vallee, and the "infiltration of the military establishment" may be considered in a study of the Pentagon's occult pursuits (that "earlier precursor of the space program" sounds like Jack Parsons and friends), but the caller's claim of special knowledge is beyond verification.

I thought of this tonight because I sense we're approaching a time of flowering for great evil. This shouldn't shock us, but it is still going to surprise us by unfolding itself in unexpected ways. Things are accelerating, events are overtaking us, and the goosebumps are giving way to nervous tension. What's different? Then the theory, now the praxis.

There's a thrill of discovery, even of dark discoveries, and a certain joy at exercising critical thought in America's great Forbidden Zone. But now the game changes. A recurring and seemingly fabulist theme in the literature of cult and mind control survivors is the perseverence of a criminal Nazi underground in America, surviving on bonds of blood and symbology and enjoying the protection of high power. Eight-year old Rhonda, drawing pictures of her torture depicting swastikas and ceremonial daggers. Kathleen Sullivan writing in Unshackled of being shuffled between porn shoots and "secret Nazi meetings" by her father and grandfather. It's all a bit too rich for most palates, even now, when the Nazi is little more than a stock villain or comic foil. It's hard to get exercised about an enemy if you believe him buried beneath 60 years of history.

We know of Paperclip and the Ghelen Org, and how Nazis came to guide US government science and intelligence (and unacknowledged yet no less real, the covert trafficking of arms and drugs), finding the patronage of their stateside fellow travellers and eugenicists. Not as well known is how many others came to follow.

Between 1948 and 1952, America's Displaced Persons Commission arranged for nearly a half-million Europeans to emigrate to the United States. For two years it barred those who had been members of organizations sympathetic or collaborative to the Nazis. In 1950 that began to change, when first the "Baltic Legion" was removed from the list of "hostile" movements, though the Baltic Legion was also known as the Baltic Waffen SS.

The change of policy was strategic: the CIA was subsidizing the immigration of European Nazis and fascists in order to build a far-right power bloc as a hedge against communism. Its primary vehicle became the Republican Party. In the year the Commission completed its work, the Republican National Committee formed an "Ethnic Division" to mobilize for elections, which became the permanent standing body called the Republican Heritage Groups Council in 1969.

In his 1988 book Old Nazis, the New Right, and the Republican Party, Russ Bellant writes that "it eventually became clear that it wasn't an accident or a fluke that people with Nazi associations were in the Republican Heritage Groups Council. In some cases more mainstream ethnic organizations were passed over in favor of smaller but more extremists groups. [And] the Republican National Committee knows with whom they are dealing."

The leaders of the Republican "heritage" groups included men like Nicholas Nazarenko, who fought as an officer in an SS Cossack unit before going to work for the US Army's Counter Intelligence Corp. The evening after a Reagan speech praising the heritage groups, Nazarenko insisted on opening for Bellant his huge suitcase of political materials, filled with German war memorabilia and literature on the "Jewish problem." He said he was still "in touch" with various "Nazi" organizations: "They respect me because I was a former German army officer. Sometimes when I meet these guys, they say 'Heil Hitler.'"

Bellant again: "in a sense...the foundation of the Republican Heritage Groups Council lay in Hitler's networks into East Europe before World War II. In each of those Eastern European countries, the German SS set up or funded political action organizations that helped form SS militias during the war."

The heritage groups accounted for 86,000 volunteers in the 1988 election of George HW Bush, though several of their leaders were compelled to resign from campaign positions on account of collaboration. One was Romanian priest and member of the pro-Nazi Iron Guard Florian Galdau, who boasted of having files on 15,000 Romanians he helped emigrate in the US with the aid of CIA-linked resettlement groups the Tolstoy Foundation and the International Rescue Committee. Candidate Bush insisted they were all honourable men and innocent of all charges.

These old ratlines are of more than historical curiosity, and for more reason than that they suggest an embedding of Nazism in the Republican Party that goes beyond metaphor. They ratlines also appear to continue to function. Mohammed Atta participated in a German-American exchange program, jointly overseen by the State Department and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and linked to both David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger. (The Carl Duisberg Society, named after a senior official of IG Farben.) According to Atta's stripper girlfriend Amanda Keller, he called his German associates in Florida his "brothers." One of then, Wolfgang Bohringer, belonged to the "Flying Club of Munich," which was owned by his father. "Such clubs were popular with "postwar German neo-Nazis to circumvent that country’s anti-Nazi laws."

Daniel Hopsicker further observes:

From what has been learned so far, the backgrounds of Atta's German associates seem strikingly similar to that of another German national, Andreas Strassmeir, whose possible relationship with Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was in the news a decade ago. Strassmeir was at one point named in a lawsuit by families of the victims as a "US federal informant with material knowledge of the Oklahoma City bombing." Strassmeir's father was once a top aide to German Chancellor Helmut Kohl; Atta's German friends are all children of the German elite.

Nazis and Satanists go together like Bush and fascism. Where you find one you will invariably find the other, because their agendas and goals are the same. Control through fear and indoctrination, victim degradation, symbolism and fetish totems, pagan ritual and sacrifice for power, and world domination in the service of Lucifer.

Of course, we're all speculators, so it's hard to agree with his point of view entirely. But he is certainly informative, been quite predictive. The theorty of a Nazi Fifth Column takedown of the United States of America really fills in a number of the missing puzzle pieces. At least it helps to answer the question: why are George Bush's policies designed to destroy the Land of the Free and (at least once upon a time) Home of the Brave?

Here's that summary of "Exposing the Nazi International" from Secret and Suppressed: Banned Ideas & Hidden History:

According to the introduction, the article purports to be a transcript of four conversations taped in 1981 between an investigative reporter and a man claiming to be a Nazi operative. The reporter found it too hot to handle and passed it along to a publisher, who spoke to the original informant, was able to verify one of his visits to Otto Skorzeny, but otherwise made no judgment about how much of it was true and how much of it fabricated out of whole cloth.

The subject of the interview describes himself as having been a liaison for the International Nazi Party for ten years, connecting the central headquarters with its field operatives. He says that the core of the organization consisted of former SS officers and Nazi Party members and that there was a second section of German industrialists and businessmen who provided financial support. He says they were involved with such groups as the IRA and the PLO, but also with "top level individuals in the Reagan administration" and with the Western German government.

He says his involvement began when his interest in war memorabilia led to an introduction to Otto Skorzeny. Over a period of a couple of years Skorzeny asked him to do a few minor tasks, gradually building confidence in him. He says he then got involved in a number of financial operations. One eventually involved sabotaging DC-10 airplanes by means of ultrasonic equipment in order to benefit Airbus. Another had to do with taking over corporations through various individuals or organizations as fronts. He refers to Dean Witter/Reynolds as being actually controlled by Arabs, who were in turn controlled by Germans, and says that the Germans and British had been vying for influence over leading Arabs for decades, with the Americans pretty oblivious to the whole thing. There was also speculation in gold. His own payoff came through the insider knowledge he gained of these transactions.

About 1975, he says, Skorzeny faked his own death, surfacing again at a compound in Paraguay in 1977. When they met in Paraguay, they discussed using Hawaii as a base, because the governor at the time was on the take, as well as other corporations they might take over.

He says this about the Reagan administration:

They decided in '79 that Reagan was going to be elected. A meeting was held, those attending being Alexander Haig, George Bush, Steve Bechtel, Dave Packard, Henry Kissinger and Helmut Schmidt at Bohemian Grove, in which policy was decided for future election of Ronald Reagan and possible events to follow thereafter. This was merely a preliminary meeting to decide basic goals and to structure the campaign as these American corporate officers would desire to have it structured.

Mr. Bechtel at that time was not in total agreement with certain objectives. To keep him in line a very minor object lesson was made by an attack on Bechtel's holdings in Central America. At that time General Haig wished to have more input, particularly regarding his possible nomination, but acquiesced when told that was not possible at this time. When he continued to balk at his position he was given an objectlesson, the attempted bombing of his staff car, which was never meant to explode. . . .

Shortly thereafter, it was in the final planning stages of the election campaign, it was determined that Reagan was pliable, and could be worked with and dealt with, that there would be no problem. As time grew closer Mr. Reagan was evidently asserting himself in such a way that it was felt that he could not be depended on to follow advice of his subordinates who, in effect, were to be the heads of government. It was determined that he was to be removed. The first operation planned was for January 11, 1981 at a dinner held as a farewell to close friends in the Los Angeles area. Information was pased through my sources and the operation was stopped. . . . My contact was able to prebvent this particular contract from being carried out, this is not to say that the contract will not be tried again, as happened in Washington recently.

He then gives other examples of "Organization influence." One involved faking the origin of Iranian oil on behalf of the large oil companies. Another had to do with the Hunt brothers' attempt to corner the silver market in 1979-80 (together with the ben Mafouz family and Ghaith Pharaon of later BCCI notoriety.) He says, "[The Hunts] thought they were screwing the Arabs. It was Arab money that did the buying. So when the bath came, it was the Arabs took the bath. The Hunts got a nice profit for themselves, the Organization got a fantastic profit for themselves, and the Arabs were left sucking eggs. Who took the rap? The Hunts."

When asked about the Rockefellers, he says that Nelson "was one of the bitterest enemies of the Organization," who "worked long and hard" to root them out of South America, but that David was working with the Organization and was responsible for Nelson's death. He adds cryptically, "[Nelson] was probably connected to the Organization, but what's important is that he was one of the few men in a position to hurt the Organization and insulate himself from retaliation. And Kissinger was his advisor, and Kissinger reported to David."

And he says this of the 1979 plan to elect Reagan (in effect, backdating the October Surprise by a year):

You must remember that the Shah, the one who died, his father was very pro-Nazi. The German industrial element has very carefully, for many years, cultivated the Middle East countries. . . . So we're getting back to Iran, and how Iran could help Reagan. . . . Information was fed from the Organization to Helmut Schmidt to David Rockefeller to Henry Kissinger. Creating friction leading to an incident and feeding the incident. Very simply, the incident was created by bringing the Shah to the United States. The people in Iran looked at it very simply. Their reaction was predictable.

He also speaks of airplane hijackings involving Carlos the Jackal and the PLO. And he says that the massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics was an Organization operation. His final statement is that the younger generation in the Organization is more ruthless and less concerned with keeping a low profile than the original-era Nazis.

What do I make of all this? As I said in the brief post above, the idea of a Nazi underground pulling the strings of these kinds of events behind the scenes seems ludicrous on the face of it -- but the piece itself has no obvious loopholes and in fact seems more convincing today, in light of everything that has come out about the Bush family and BCCI and so forth, than when I first read it. If it was actually written in 1981, it is extraordinary for its focus on exactly the topics that preoccupy us in 2006, rather than on the Soviet Union or other concerns of its own time. Even if it was concocted in 1993, which is the publication date of the book in which I have it, it was unusually forward-looking.

Also, the people it names are exactly those you might suspect of having Nazi, or at least fascist,connections. For example, Barbara Honegger's October Surprise is quoted in various places online as saying, "When the Italian police raided (P2 Lodge founder) Gelli's home in March 1981, it was Michael Ledeen who, at the instigation of Alexander Haig and Henry Kissinger, offered to buy the list of 953 P2 members in an apparent attempt to keep it from becoming public. Henry Kissinger had also reportedly sent Ledeen to Italy to try to squash an investigation into his and Haig's involvement in the founding of P2."

And there is an Alex Constantine piece on Adnan Kashoggi, Barrick Gold, and related matters, which concludes:

Another Nazi entrusted with the postwar wealth of the SS was Francois Genoud. In 1992, the Observer identified Genoud as "one of the world's leading Nazis." Authorites suggest that he "transferred the defeated Nazis' gold into Swiss bank accounts." Genoud underwrote the postwar Odessa organization. On March 12, 2002, the San Franciso Chronicle let on that Swiss police "believe Genoud founded al Taqwa Bank and allocated its resources to support international terrorists such as Vladimir Ilich Ramirez, alias Carlos the Jackal, and bin Laden." A few days later, Salon reported that Osama bin Laden had received funding from Al Taqwa, with shareholders that include prominent Arab figures from numerous countries in the Middle East. Among the shareholders are the grand mufti of the United Arab Emirates and prominent families in the UAE and Kuwait. Two sisters of Osama bin Laden are also on the list, undermining the bin Laden family's claim that it separated itself from his terrorist pursuits after he was expelled from Saudi Arabia in 1994."

With all this subterfuge in the background, the Khashoggi-Lockheed bribery scandal begs reappraisal. Marcos, Yoshia and Iran-contra's John Singlaub were all charter members of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), a para-fascist organization of old guard Nazis, death squad leaders, spooks and propagandists. WACL provides further right-wing context; the CIA and WACL were arguably symbiotic.

David Guyatt reports that a letter from Henry Kissinger dated February 21, 1986 was sent to Marcos, ordering the sale of 63,321 tons of gold to 2000 US and European banks. Marcos stubbornly refused and was dethroned.

So there's no doubt at all in my mind that much of what the article points to is real -- that there were a lot of fascists of various stripes active in the politics of the late 70's and early 80's, and that the 1980 election was a pre-planned coup in which Kissinger, Haig, and George H.W. Bush were centrally involved.

But whether there were really a bunch of old Nazis pulling *their* strings or whether that's merely a colorful rhetorical device, I have no idea.

I also have no opinion on whether David Rockefeller really murdered Nelson.

I don't know what people on the board think of Emory, but I have listened to his radio shows on and off since the mid-Eighties and find him is one of the most insightful and prescient speculators on our recent past and present moment. In some of his latest shows he has been refering to the following historical,mostly out of print, books on Fascism's roots and shoots. INTRODUCTION

“It’s a good thing we didn’t lose World War II. If we had, all our public officials would be named Shultz, Weinberger and Kissinger, and everybody would be driving German and Japanese cars.”—Popular joke that made the rounds in the early 1980’s.

In the decades since the end of the Second World War, much has been written about the war and fascism, the driving force behind the aggression that precipitated that conflict. Unfortunately, much of what has been said and written has failed to identify and analyze the causes, nature and methodology of fascism—German National Socialism or “Nazism” in particular. A deeper, more accurate analysis was presented in literature published before, during and immediately after World War II. The SPITFIRE web site is pleased to present a number of books published during that period. All more than 50 years old, these works embody a more complete, profound analysis of the historical forces that dominated the events of that time and, more importantly, our own.

Whereas much contemporary literature on the subject presents fascism (and Nazism in particular) as an aberration, the phenomenon was an outgrowth of major political forces and dynamics that dominate and control contemporary events and processes. Some of the books presented here illustrate the extent to which fascism (Nazism in particular) was an outgrowth of globalization and the construction of international monopolies (cartels). [FTR#’s 99, 361, 426, 511 and 532 present an overview of the reinvestment of the wealth generated by the American industrial boom of the 1920’s in German and Japanese strategic heavy industry. It was this capital that drove the engines of conquest that subdued both Europe and Asia during the conflict.]

Germany’s Master Plan (1943) by Borkin and Welsh analyzes how the Nazis took advantage of the budding globalized economy to restrict their enemies’ strategic production, as well as their access to critical raw materials. Treason’s Peace (1947) by Howard Watson Ambruster highlights how the I.G. Farben chemical firm manipulated trade relationships to the advantage of the Third Reich. In addition, the book illustrates how corporations, businessmen and politicians beholden unto the firm’s non-German cartel partners assisted that manipulation, as well as the postwar rehabilitation and exoneration of both I.G. and its most important personnel. Those personnel and the vast reach of I.G. Farben and its cartel partners are also the subject of Josiah Du Bois’s The Devil’s Chemists. James Stewart Martin’s All Honorable Men (1950) documents the manner in which powerful economic interests in the United States frustrated attempts at de-cartelization and thereby ensured the postwar perpetuation of globalized “business as usual.” As Martin points out, these commercial interests were able to successfully manipulate the networks through which government operates, and direct it to their own nefarious ends. The lone title in the collection less than 50 years old, Paul Manning’s Martin Bormann: Nazi in Exile (1981) chronicles the postwar underground perpetuation of the Nazi political and business hierarchy and its dominant role in both the international corporate economy and the contemporary political landscape.

The Third Reich’s elaborate plans for postwar underground survival and continuity were predicated on the certainty that the multinational corporate community would preserve the Nazi infrastructure as a bulwark against communism during the (then) imminent Cold War. This “Underground Reich” was foreseen and analyzed in Curt Reiss’s The Nazis Go Underground, published in early 1944. In addition to the powerful corporate economic interests allied with Nazi business centers, the process of underground perpetuation was greatly aided by “Fifth Column” movements abroad. Composed of ideological supporters of the fascist philosophy, these Fifth Column movements were instrumental in realizing Nazi blueprints for military conquest during the war, as well as postwar continuation and enlargement of those plans. Written on the eve of World War II, Gollomb’s Armies of Spies correctly anticipated the enormous scope and effectively successful activities of the Fifth Columnists in nations slated for Nazi invasion. Triumph of Treason (1944) by Pierre Cot is a remarkable first-hand account of the subversion of France by powerful domestic interests, who saw political control by their ideological allies (and cartel business partners) in Germany as preferable to power-sharing with their own democratically-minded citizens. [Cot had been the French Minister of Aviation in the immediate pre-war period, and witnessed the deliberate, successful attempts at weakening France’s ability to resist the Nazis militarily. The traitors who subverted French democracy then blamed the French collapse on their patriotic political opponents.]

In developing their Fifth Column movements abroad, the Nazis (and the Japanese) proceeded in a geopolitical manner. Because they saw Spain as the key to the domination of several continents (Europe, North Africa, Latin America), the Nazis and their allies in the general staff groomed the Spanish Falange as the fascist movement of choice. Writing of this in Falange (1943), Alan Chase notes how the Reich then used political control of Spain to advance their agenda in Latin America and the Spanish-speaking world. The reader is invited to address Chase’s research in light of the relatively well-documented postwar operation and perpetuation of fascist interests in Latin America.

For the Nazis, geopolitics dictated a profound interest in the Muslim peoples of what they called “The Earth Island.”--a giant, contiguous land mass that encompasses all of Europe, much of the Middle East, the former Soviet Union, India (including Pakistan at the time), and China. Stretching from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Pacific coasts of China and Russia, this land mass contains most of the world’s territory, population and natural resources—oil in particular. Control that land and you control the world. Accordingly, the Nazis built alliances with the various Muslim populations (Arabs in particular) that are indigenous to many of the most important petroleum-producing regions. Writing in 1951, John Roy Carlson witnessed and chronicled the postwar Nazi recrudescence in the Middle East in Cairo to Damascus, a work that has particular importance for students of the events of 9/11/2001.

In an earlier work—Undercover (1943)—Carlson infiltrated and wrote about the vigorous Axis underground that existed in the United States before and during World War II. Michael Sayers and Albert E. Kahn penned Sabotage in 1942, documenting the violent and treasonous nature of many of the American Fifth Columnists, who committed acts of assassination and sabotage in support of the Axis powers. These tactics were used to good effect in Germany and Japan, where potential political opponents to the rise of fascism were eliminated through a deliberate program of political murder.

It is in that context that we may view Government by Assassination (1942), Hugh Byas’s riveting account of the assassinations committed by the Japanese patriotic and ultra-nationalistic societies. Culminating in the “May 15th Incident”—the assassination of the Japanese Prime Minister on 5/15/1932—these murders were instrumental in the accession to power of the Japanese militarists and the corporate and imperial elements behind them.

Two other books available here provide valuable insights into the contemporary period. T.H. Tetens’ Germany Plots with the Kremlin (1953) treats the pivotally important German “Ostpolitik,” which German power structure has traditionally exploited in order expand and develop its influence. The German threat to either remain neutral during the Cold War, or to ally with the USSR was a significant factor in persuading conservative American power brokers to go along with the return to power in Germany of the Nazi elements that prosecuted World War II. Under the circumstances, some of these conservatives felt that permitting Nazi elements to return to power behind a democratic façade was the lesser of two evils, although many would have preferred a more traditionally conservative German political establishment. This German “Ostpolitik,” in turn, is characteristic of the geopolitical foresight and cynicism with which Pan-Germanists have successfully pursued their goal of world domination through the centuries.

Paul Winkler’s The Thousand-Year Conspiracy traces the origins of German chauvinism to the ascent of the Teutonic Knights within Germanic society. Winkler labels the enablers of the dark side of the German character “Prusso-Teutonics” and notes that, in their pursuit of Pan-German goals, they do not hesitate to deal in a cynical and ruthless manner with their own citizens. Of particular note for contemporary Americans is the deliberate, Machiavellian manipulation of the German economy by Hjalmar Horace Greeley Schacht, the American-born financier who eventually became the finance minister of the Third Reich. Take note of Winkler’s account of how Schacht re-structured the German economy with an eye to—among other things—driving the citizenry to such a point of hysteria that they would willingly follow the likes of Hitler. Compare Winkler’s analysis with what is taking place today in the United States. Writing in 1943, Winkler foresaw that the Prusso-Teutonics would realize their goals through the creation of a German-dominated central European economic union (bearing a striking resemblance to today’s European Monetary Union.)

Another piece that's well worth reading in connection with all of the above is Steve Kangas's "The Origins of the Overclass," about the CIA as the basis of the ongoing right-wing takeover of the US since 1970. Although it doesn't explicitly identify this movement as fascist, it forms a perfect match with others that do.

Pick any thread of the contemporary right and try to trace back where it came from and how it got its power, and you will almost certainly wind up with the CIA.

One major line of transmission goes through Bill Buckley (CIA) and particularly his Young Americans for Freedom. Some of YAF's leaders of the 60's and early 70's got channelled into associations with essentially fascist groups like the American-Chilean Council and the World Anti-Communist League, or with the related operations of Reverend Moon. Others followed the path of fundraising scams and political dirty tricks.

A second line goes through Ray S. Cline (OSS and CIA) and his Center for Strategic and International Studies, founded in 1962. Cline and his network of both former and active CIA agents were a major force behind George H.W. Bush's abortive presidential bid in 1979 and then were involved in the darker aspects of Reagan's 1980 campaign. Even though Cline died in the 90's, CSIS continues to be a hotbed of Nazi-style geostrategic thinking mentioned in the long Dave Emory quote above -- Kissinger, Brzezinski, all that bunch -- and is behind much of the insane US dream of ruling the world by dominating the 'stans and Central Asia.

There are a couple of other avenues of CIA influence that I haven't explored as deeply as those two. One involves Scaife and the other funders who have pumped so much cash into right-wing operations since the 70's. Another is the religious right, whose origins seem not to lie in anything genuinely religious but rather in the extreme anti-communist groups of the 50's, behind which lie the overt fascist groups of the US in the 30's.

And then, of course, there are the Gladio/Stay-behind type operations in places like Italy and Turkey. And on. And on.

It's a vast, tangled web -- and I've only explored a few small corners of it. Between 1950 and 1990, most of it was able to pass as "anti-communist" and thus obscure its true nature. But once we consider it as not only explicitly fascist, but as the direct heir of the fascism of the 30's and 40's, certain figures and events are highlighted and the whole takes on greater coherence.

As one example, the close relationships among various strains of fascists in Italy, Latin America, and Taiwan in the 70's and 80's start to appear as a main theme, and not merely a sidebar to the US struggle against the Soviet Union. In fact, the entire Cold War begins to appear as an elaborate diversion from what was really going on in those years, a myth or cover story to justify actions and affiliations that would otherwise have been unthinkable.

And the CIA, as a covert vehicle for the reinforcement of elite dominance, was at the heart of most of it.

A Place For Worries
Surrender Box

There are times when our minds become too full. Our to-do lists, worries, plans, and dreams may be so crowded together in our heads that we don't have room to think. We may believe that we are somehow taking care of our desires and concerns by keeping them at the forefront of our minds. In maintaining our mental hold on every detail, however, we may actually delay the realization of our dreams and the resolution of our worries because we won't let them go. At times such as these, we may want to use a surrender box.

A surrender box allows us to let go of our worries and desires so the universe can take care of them for us. We write down what we want or need to happen and then place the note into a box. By writing and placing our thoughts in the box, we are taking action and letting the universe know we need help and are willing to surrender our feelings. We give ourselves permission to not concern ourselves with that problem any longer and trust that the universe is taking care of it. You may even want to decorate your box and place it in a special place. Your surrender box is a sacred container for your worries. Not only do you free up space in your mind by letting go of our worries and desires and dropping them into your surrender box, but you are giving your burden over to a higher power. Once we drop our worries and desires into the surrender box, we free our minds so we can be fully present in each moment.

Surrendering our worries and concerns and placing them in the hands of the universe doesn't mean that we've given up or have been defeated. Instead, we are releasing the realization of our desires and the resolution of our worries and no longer concerning ourselves with their outcomes. It's always fun to go back and pull the slips of paper out of the box once your requests have been granted. And it's amazing how quickly problems go away and dreams come true when we finally let go and allow a higher power to help us.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, British military chiefs believe an attack would be limited to a series of air strikes against nuclear plants rather than a land assault - tactical Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from US navy ships and submarines in the Gulf, followed by B2 stealth bombers equipped with 8 4,500lb enhanced BLU-28 satellite-guided bunker-busting bombs flying from Diego Garcia, the RAF base in Gloucestershire in the UK and Whiteman USAF base in Missouri.
At least eight nuclear sites are known within Iran but there are many more secret ones.
The London paper reports Washington fears an Iranian nuclear weapon could be used against Israel or US forces in the region as well as destabilizing the Middle East with Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia opting for nuclear weapons programs.

If they know of him at all, many folks think Ben Stein is just a quirky actor/comedian who talks in a monotone. He's also a very intelligent attorney who knows how to put ideas and words together in such a way as to sway juries and make people think clearly.

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary, Sunday, 12/18/05.

Herewith at this happy time of year, a few confessions from my beating heart: I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important?
I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise's wife.

Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are.
If this is what it means to be no longer young. It's not so bad.

Next confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?

I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too.

But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to.

John Reid demanded sweeping changes to international
law yesterday to free British soldiers from the
restraints of the Geneva conventions and make it
easier for the west to mount military actions against
other states.

In his speech, the defence secretary addressed three
key issues: the treatment of prisoners, when to mount
a pre-emptive strikes, and when to intervene to stop a
humanitarian crisis. In all these areas, he indicated
that the UK and west was being hamstrung by existing
inadequate law.

Mr Reid indicated he believed existing rules,
including some of the conventions - a bedrock of
international law - were out of date and inadequate to
deal with the threat of international terrorists.

"We are finding an enemy which obeys no rules
whatsoever", he said, referring to what he called
"barbaric terrorism".

The conventions, he said, were created more than half
century ago "when the world was almost
unrecognisable". They dealt with how the sick and
injured and how prisoners of war were treated, "and
the obligations on states during their military
occupation of another state", he said.

Given the big changes undertaken by the military over
the past 50 years, he added, "serious questions" must
be asked about whether "further changes in
international law in this area are necessary".

Mr Reid declined to say whether he had come round to
the US view that detainees at Guantánamo bay should
not be allowed the protection of the conventions or
the courts. Similarly, he would not say if he thought
Britain should support the US practice of
extraordinary rendition, the transferring of prisoners
to secret camps where they risk being tortured.
However, he said, it was not "sufficient just to say
[Guantánamo] is wrong".

Mr Reid said yesterday that while domestic laws had
been introduced to deal with new threats - he referred
to the new offence of "glorifying terrorism" -
international law had not changed.

He also spoke of the "concept of imminence" - the
circumstances when a state could strike without
waiting for an attack.

It was a principal issue during the debate over the
invasion of Iraq and has clear implications for any
possible future action against Iran.

Mr Reid noted that last year Lord Goldsmith, the
attorney general, advised that force could be used
only against imminent attack, that it must only be
used as a last resort, and that it must be
proportionate.

"But what if another threat develops?", Mr Reid asked.
"Not al-Qaida. Not Muslim extremism. Something none of
us are thinking about at the moment." Terrorist groups
were trying to acquire weapons of mass destruction, he
said.

The Liberal Democrat defence spokesman, Nick Harvey,
said: "After the disaster of Iraq, the idea that the
doctrine of pre-emptive strike should be expanded will
be met with incredulity in the west and alarm in the
ministries of Tehran."

Sir Adam Roberts, professor of international relations
at Oxford University, said: "Some of the biggest
coalition problems in both Afghanistan and Iraq have
come from failures of the coalition to observe basic
norms on certain matters, especially with regard to
treatment of prisoners.

"Dr Reid is certainly right to raise the question of
whether we need new rules in face of imminent attack.
This problem above all requires confidence in
government and coalition decision-making processes -
confidence that has sadly been undermined by Iraq."

'Israel Lobby' no joke Wednesday, April 5, 2006 Was the Trib's scathing denunciation of the research paper "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" (by University of Chicago and Harvard University political science professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, respectively) an April Fools' Day joke ("'The Israel Lobby,'" April 1 and TribLIVE.com)? I am not usually impressed with research papers generated by normally left-wing universities, but the Trib's slander of the authors prompted me read the 82-page paper online (ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011). The Trib's casual dismissal of the well-documented (42 pages of keynotes) research paper by two well-respected professionals as "blatantly anti-Semitic" is a insult to not only the professors but to careful readers who have been wondering for 2 1/2 years how the United States got sucked into the Iraq disaster. What is currently transpiring in the occupied territories is by far a
worst-case scenario, ironically one made possible with the direct help of
many Palestinians themselves.
The democratically elected Palestinian government is now officially
isolated, as many Palestinians cannot see beyond their own narrow - and
frankly irrelevant - ideological differences and immaterial factionalism.
Others cannot resist their total reliance on foreign, mostly European, funds
to run their mostly self-exalting NGOs, whose tangible contribution to
Palestinian life is still disputed. The final outcome is that turning
Palestine into another Nicaragua is working.
That was the intent from the moment Hamas was declared victorious in the
parliamentary elections .... US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ...
leading a campaign of defamation and coercion aimed at politically and
financially isolating the democratically elected Palestinian legislators,
further solidifying with the former corrupt political elite.
In the same way, Nicaragua of the 1960s and 70s seemed of little concern ...

The Palestinian case is, more or less, being handled the same way: ..that
same ... scenario which is hoped to eventually lead to diplomatic deadlock,
regional and international isolation and further deterioration in the
already unstable (read non-existing) Palestinian economy.
On the external front, the new Palestinian government was met almost
immediately with unfair demands of unilateral renunciation of violence and
the unconditional recognition of Israel. ... .
... Rather than coming together in the face of danger, Fateh intentionally
impeded Hamas' attempt to join the new government and the socialists failed
to see through their ideological constrictions.
Unfortunately, Hamas was forced to form a government and to seek its
legislative approval alone.

While a religious ideology is not the most helpful formula for any
Palestinian polity and suicide bombings were the single most tainting act
employed by Palestinians in recent years, I believe all Palestinians must
recognise that the impending fight is of greater consequence than the

[IMRA: It has been an going theme for retreat supporters to term a vote in
favor of retreat to be a move putting "pragmatism" over "ideology". One can
readily argue that the opposite is the case.
Is the implementation of a retreat that can be expected to leave the area
under the control of a sovereign Hamas terror state out of a desire to
immediately end the "occupation" at all costs so that at some future point
in time Israel will not find itself forced to allow the Palestinians in the
West Bank to vote in the Knesset (the "demographic threat") "pragmatism" or
the expression of an extreme of "ideology"?

Is the belief that if Israel unilaterally retreats to a line that this line
will enjoy international recognition as a final border "pragmatism" or the
wishful self-deception of an extreme "ideology"?]

The Israeli Elections: Initial Reflections

The Israeli national elections held on March 28 did not yield a clear-cut
outcome and one should therefore be cautious in drawing conclusions before
all the results, including breakdowns by various criteria, have been
properly digested, analyzed and understood. However, it is already possible
to venture several observations.

The first concerns the low voter turnout - about 64% -- which represents a
decrease of 5% from three years ago and is the lowest turnout rate in Israel's
history (for Knesset elections). Voter apathy reflects a growing
disillusionment with the current political parties in particular and with
the political process in general. This disillusionment was also
demonstrated in the surprise of the election - the astonishing achievement
of the Pensioners' Party, which won seven seats (more than half of the seats
won by the Likud). The support for this party, whose political platform and
candidates were totally unknown to the Israeli electorate, can only be seen
as a massive protest vote against all the political parties represented in
the outgoing Knesset. Indeed, the party's remarkable and totally
unpredicted success may well be attributed precisely to the fact that it was
not represented in the previous Knesset and that its candidates were not
politicians. At the same time, it should be noted that growing voter
apathy, especially among young age groups, is endemic in Western democracies
and thus may be a sign - albeit not a positive one - of a growing normalcy
in the Israeli political environment. Given improved security and an upbeat
economy, many Israelis saw no real threat and felt that they could stay home
or vote for the Pensioners' Party.

As for the results themselves, two key observations are in order. First of
all, there has been a clear short-term shift in the balance of power from
center-right to center-left. The right-religious bloc has dropped from 69
seats to 50 seats - a loss of over twenty five percent. The center-left
bloc, including the Arab parties, controls 63 seats, with the remaining
seven going to the new Pensioners' Party. The political leanings of this
party remain a mystery, although there is reason to believe that it, or at
least a majority of its Knesset members, lean towards the center-left bloc.
If so, that would effectively give the bloc a total of 70 seats. No less
important, the center-left bloc, assuming the support of the Pensioners'
Party, has 60 seats even without the Arab parties. Not since before the
first Likud victory in 1977 has the center-left bloc been in such a strong
position. The significance of these numbers is that Kadima Leader Ehud
Olmert can muster a majority in the Knesset for his convergence plan even if
the Arab parties (which together have ten seats) abstain. Nevertheless, the
victory of Olmert, Kadima and the center-left bloc is far from a landslide,
and the results remain subject to different interpretations.

In the long-term point of view, however, there are two contradictory trends,
both of which may have far-reaching ramifications and consequences for
Israeli politics and for Israeli society. On the one hand, we see an
electorate far less ideological and more pragmatic. At the same, however,
we have also seen a sharp increase in sectarianism.

These elections reflect the demise of the ideological parties. Meretz on
the left and the National Union-National Religious Party on the right
suffered losses at the polls, and the Likud was all but demolished. Many
have termed these elections "the death of ideology." It would seem that the
Israeli voter has freed himself at last from a binding commitment to a given
party - be it because of ideology or a "label." Party loyalty has been
greatly weakened and there may well be wide-ranging shifts in future voting
patterns, reflecting a more pragmatic and situation-dependent approach on
the part of the Israeli electorate.

Indeed, perhaps the most dramatic and obvious result of this election is the
complete redrawing of the political map compared to that of three years ago.
Kadima, a party which did not exist six months ago, received the votes of
almost one out of every four Israelis and is now the largest party in the
Knesset, with 29 seats. Shinui, a party which had won 15 seats in 2003 and
had over 300,000 votes, vanished into thin air. The Likud lost close to 75%
of its votes and went from 38 seats in 2003 (making it the largest party,
twice as big as Labor) to just 12 seats, by far its worst showing ever. All
in all, only 17% of the voters (according to one exit poll) voted this time
for the same party they had voted for in the previous elections. In short,
political parties and their leaders can no longer take the loyalty of their
voters for granted.

Many had expected that the reconfiguration of Israeli politics would produce
a strong center party - Kadima - which would be able, with relative ease, to
form a strong and stable coalition government which could implement
clear-cut and far-reaching political, diplomatic and economic policies.
This expectation did not fully materialize. Instead, there has been a
remarkable rise in the support for sectarian parties. Shas, United Torah
Judaism, and especially the Russian immigrants' party of Avigdor Lieberman
made strong gains, and the Pensioners' Party - a classic special interest
party - is the great surprise of the elections. The Arab parties and the
National Union-NRP are also, for all intents and purposes, sectarian
parties. One single number can tell the whole story. The three major
parties which presented candidates for Prime Minister - Kadima, Labor and
Likud -- altogether could muster only 60 seats. This is the first time in
Israel's history that the three largest parties together are unable, even
hypothetically, to form a government.

Ehud Olmert now faces the formidable task of putting together a stable
coalition in a Knesset in which twelve parties are represented but none is
truly dominant. And Israel as a whole will have to grapple with the
consequences of growing sectarianism, with all the inherent dangers that
poses for a healthy democracy and a strong cohesive society.

1 Citizen Dead and 2 Injured in Incidents Involving the Mishandling of
Weapons

Hisham Ahmad Mohammad Jaber, a 30-year-old resident of the Sheikh Radwan
neighborhood of Gaza City, shot himself, after injuring his brother
(Mohammad, 24), when he mishandled a firearm.

According to the family's testimony to the police, given in Shifa Hospital
in Gaza City, the incident took place at approximately 16:00 on Sunday, 2
April 2006. At the time, Hisham Jaber, a taxi driver, was handling a weapon
at his house in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. A bullet was accidentally
fired, hitting his brother Mohammad in the leg. According to the testimony,
Hisham then shot himself in the head and died instantly. Medical sources at
Shifa Hospital stated that Hisham was killed by a bullet to the head, while
Mohammad's injury was classified as moderate.

In another incident, Hani Jaber Khalil, a 27-year-old resident of Jabalia
refugee camp, was injured when he mishandled a weapon. PCHR's initial
investigation indicates that at approximately 20:20 on Sunday, 2 April 2006,
Hani Khalil was injured by a bullet to the right leg, which was fired when
he mishandled a rifle in his house. He was taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital in
Beit Lahya, where his injury was classified as moderate.

PCHR is very concerned over the continued number of deaths and injuries
resulting from the misuse of weapons, which is has become a prominent
feature of the ongoing security chaos in the region. The Centre stresses
the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring their safety in
accordance with international humanitarian law.

Iran has set up a sophisticated intelligence gathering operation in southern
Lebanon to identify targets in northern Israel in the event of a military
confrontation over its controversial nuclear programme.

Senior Israeli military commanders say Iran has spent tens of millions of
pounds helping its close ally, Hizbollah, the Shia Muslim militant group
that controls southern Lebanon, to set up a network of control towers and
monitoring stations along the entire length of Israel's border with south
Lebanon.

Some of the new control towers, which are made of reinforced concrete and
fitted with bullet-proof reflective glass, are less than 100 yards from
Israeli army positions and are clearly visible for long stretches along
Israel's border.

"This is now Iran's front line with Israel," a senior Israeli military
commander said. "The Iranians are using Hizbollah to spy on us so that they
can collect information for future attacks. And there is very little we can
do about it."

The Israeli military has reported a significant increase in Hizbollah
activity in southern Lebanon since Syria came under intense international
pressure to withdraw its forces from the area last year following the
assassination of the Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

Israeli military officers report that teams of Iran's Revolutionary Guards
travel regularly to southern Lebanon to help train local Hizbollah fighters
in terrorist tactics. Tensions between Iran and Israel have intensified
dramatically since the election last summer of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
as Iran's new leader. Israel has repeatedly threatened to take military
action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and the new Iranian
government has responded by calling for Israel's destruction.

Senior Israeli military officers believe Iran is deliberately exploiting the
power vacuum caused by Syria's withdrawal to intensify pressure on Israel's
northern border.

Hizbollah is aware that Israel is keen to maintain friendly relations with
the new government in Lebanon and believes it can act freely in southern
Lebanon without provoking retaliatory strikes from Israel.

Officers report a sharp increase in border incidents between Hizbollah
fighters and Israeli units on the northern border, with the main flash
points located at the disputed Druze village of Ghajar, which is divided by
the border between Israel and Lebanon, and Mount Dov, which Hizbollah also
claims should be part of Lebanon.

The situation is now regarded as so serious that many senior Israeli
officers openly admit to missing the restraining influence of Syria over
Hizbollah.

"When the Syrians were in Lebanon it was easy for us to control Hizbollah,"
said an officer with Israel's northern command. "If things got too tense we
could put pressure on Damascus and the Syrians would act quickly to calm
things down."

Although the Lebanese government technically controls the border area, its
military is not considered strong enough to control Hizbollah, which takes
its orders directly from Teheran.

"Iran is playing a very dangerous game of cat and mouse on our northern
border and it could easily spiral out of control at any moment," said the
officer.

In recent weeks Hizbollah sent unmanned aircraft on reconnaissance missions
over the border to photograph sensitive Israeli military installations. The
spy planes returned to base before being detected by air defence systems.

In addition to providing intelligence-gathering and communications
equipment, Iran has also equipped Hizbollah with improved weapons and
ammunition to launch attacks against Israel, including heavy mortars and
rockets with a range of up to 30 miles.

"The households and farmers did not flee their places, when the occupation
soldiers had occupied the area and played havoc," Shabat said, adding that
people insisted on keeping steadfast in their lands despite of the daily
missiles.

Tracing in finger to the vast areas opposite to the northern eastward
borders of Beit Hanoon nestled with Green Line lands; Sahabt explained "the
occupation troops aimed to empty this area from its indigenous population in
a prelude to convert it into a buffer zone totally open to their tanks and
convoys able to monitor the area round the clock."

Though hundreds of scattered houses stretching along the borders with the
green line until reaching Beit Hannon crossing " Eretz", the area is
seemingly almost bleak. Prior to the evacuation of the settlers from Gaza
Strip, the Israeli occupation forces caterpillar bulldozers conducted a
whirlwind military campaign in Beit Hanoon, destroying everything even the
citrus groves that once a day the town famed with but now craving it.

A 13 year-old Hussein was continuing his soccer adamantly said "if we fear,
we will not play, read or even get out our homes, no place for fear in our
heart any more."

He went onto saying " come and live with us a week, you will be like us,
careless to missiles and live routine life despite probable death rears its
head at any moment."

Two farmers were wounded from Beit Lahia north the Strip yesterday before by
the sprinkled shrapnel as well as a number of parking cars were grossly
damaged let alone the material damages inflicted to the houses.

Hussin's father marked out the deep holes and fissure in lands came under
firing missiles saying "the Israeli special soldiers fortified in the dark
behind tiny embankments which believed to be used by the fighters to ambush
them."

Resident Hamed Abu Harbeed, 27, sounded more willpower "life on the harmony
of missiles explosion brining anticipated killing become normal for the

kids whose dreams filled with violence and fear also continue to play soccer

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States Turki al-Faisal expressed
support for Israel's strike on the Iraqi Osirak nuclear facility in 1981.

Al-Faisal said that the destruction of the Iraqi nuclear reactor by Israel
was certainly a positive step, during a speech on foreign relations in San
Francisco.

The prince said that a region clear of nuclear weapons would also serve
Israel and increase its security. He said that it was known that Israel had
nuclear weapons, and that that Arab world felt threatened by Israel, rather
than the other way around.

Faisal added that Israel possessed the best army, air force, and navy in the
Middle East, and that these have been well used in the past.

After becoming aware that Iraq was planning to construct nuclear weapons,
Israel launched a surprise aerial attack on June 7 1981 on the Osirak
facility near Baghdad, and destroyed the Iraqi reactor.

The move was initially widely condemned, but was widely supported in
subsequent years.

Five Qssam rockets were fired Tuesday from the northern Gaza Strip at
southern Ashkelon. Two of the rockets landed in the area of kibbutz Zikim,
one fell in kibbutz Karmiya, one in the area of the Nativ Haasara community
and the fifth landed in Ashkelon's industrial zone, just south of the town.

As of now, no injuries have been reported. In response to the attack, the
IDF shelled Qassam launching sites in the Strip.

One of the rockets that landed in the area of Zikim fell near an army base.
The rocket that landed in the Ashkelon industrial zone could have caused
heavy damages, according to employees at the place.

"A great disaster was prevented today," a source at the industrial area
stated. "The rocket landed near a stockpile of highly inflammable materials.
One flare could have caused grave damages to the entire vicinity," he added.

Employees working near the Qassam's landing site at the time of the attack
said they heard a loud explosion. The Red Dawn alert system identified the
rockets' launching, and consequently all personnel were ordered to enter
reinforced rooms.

Tuesday's shooting marks the second time this week rockets have been fired
at Israel. On Sunday, a Qassam was launched at Israel's territory and landed
in an open field in the western Negev.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia must do a better job at ferreting out
major individual donors who continue to fund terrorism abroad, including in
Iraq, a top U.S. Treasury official said on Tuesday.

Stuart Levey, the Treasury's undersecretary for terrorism and financial
intelligence, said Saudi Arabia had made significant strides in
counterterrorism efforts in recent years and that the kingdom was "doing an
excellent job" fighting operatives of
Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network at home.

But he told a hearing of the Senate Banking Committee that concerns
remained, including the existence of so-called "deep-pocket donors" and the
abuse of charities to fund militants.

"Is money leaving Saudi Arabia to fund terrorism abroad? Yes," said Levey,
who has traveled to Saudi Arabia twice in the last two months. "Undoubtedly,
some of that money is going to Iraq. And it's going to Southeast Asia and
it's going to any other place where there are terrorists."

He said Saudi Arabia had taken steps to curb terrorism financing, but had
failed to set up a special charity commission to regulate the sector, as it
had pledged. He said rules implemented as a stop-gap measure in the interim
"haven't been uniformly implemented."

Levey said Saudi Arabia's fledgling Financial Intelligence Unit, set up last
year after much prodding from the United States, was still not fully
functional.

Financial Intelligence Units are government agencies that collect, analyze
and exchange financial information to help fight
money laundering and terrorism financing.

"What needs to happen is they need to do financial investigations in a
serious way in order to locate those deep-pocket donors that are still
funding terrorism abroad. And that's something which is a concern that
hasn't happened as robustly as it needs to happen," Levey said.

Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby, an Alabama Republican, asked
whether there was a gap between Saudi government rhetoric and the
implementation of policy.

Levey replied: "I've got to say that there's a lag. ... And we'll see if
there's a gap."

New York - The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has criticized
the formal relationship that Brandeis University has developed with Al-Quds
University, a Palestinian educational institution in eastern Jerusalem,
whose website denies the Jewish historical connection with Jerusalem and
promotes other falsehoods. Brandeis is being funded as part of a $500,000
Ford Foundation Grant meant to bolster Al-Quds University through various
programs. Brandeis' International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public
Life, which has coordinated Al-Quds visitors programs, also includes Al-Quds
University President Sari Nusseibeh on its advisory board. Nusseibeh is
often falsely presented as a Palestinian moderate but, as ZOA revealed in
October 2002, Nusseibeh has actually demonized Israelis, praised jihad
fighters and justified the killing of so-called Palestinian "collaborators."
He has also explained that purely tactical reasons he once signed a petition
calling for a halt to Palestinian terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians.
Moreover, Nusseibeh was arrested by Israel in January 1991 for collecting
security information for Iraqi intelligence.

A perusal of Al-Quds University website page dedicated to 'Jerusalem
History' indicates that the university publicizes propaganda aimed at
denying Jewish history and especially the Jewish connection with the land of
Israel and Jerusalem, thereby fostering extremism and hatred of Israel.

The statements that appear on the Al-Quds website are similar to
claims made by Palestinian officials, including Yasser Arafat, who refused
to make peace with Israel in 20002 and told President Clinton that Jerusalem
had no connection to Judaism. Arafat also said in an October 2002 interview
that, "For 34 years [the Israelis] have dug tunnels [around the Temple
Mount].they found not a single stone proving that the Temple of Solomon was
there, because historically the Temple was not in Palestine [at all]. They
found only remnants of a shrine of the Roman Herod. They are now trying to
put in place a number of stones so that they can say 'We were here.' This is
nonsense. I challenge them to bring a single stone from the Temple of

Examples of the falsehoods on Jewish history on Al Quds University's
official website include:

� The 'salem' in the name 'Jerusalem' does not come from the Hebrew
word for peace, but allegedly from 'Shalim,' a Canaanite deity associated
with the city's founding by Jebusites.

� King David never existed, except in myth and that Israeli "efforts
to connect the city with David are intended to formalize connections between
present Jews or Israelis and that idealized biblical community called
'Israelites' . [others] "now confirm that David never existed as a tribal
chief - except in the huge realm of legend . Jerusalem has no trace at all
of a person called 'King David.'"

� These facts are known among Israeli academicians, "but some are
afraid it is a threat to the legitimacy of Israel's creation."

� "Extensive Israeli excavations [under the Temple Mount] have
threatened the foundations beneath the Dome [of the Rock] complex."

� "Israel also continues to impose other changes in demography and
geography, altering facts that took millennia to accumulate. Populations are
imported and local inhabitants dislocated."

� "The 'conquest' as described in 'Joshua' never occurred."

� "The Exodus story is nothing more than Canaanite cultural memory
appropriated by 'Israelites' as their tradition."

� The Al Aqsa Mosque is not built on the ruins of the Jewish Temple.

� The First Temple never existed: " What is called the 'first
temple,' associated with the legendary Solomon, was in fact a
pre-monotheistic place where many gods were worshipped."

� The Palestinians are descended from the original Canaanites and are
thus the natives of the land: "The people of Palestine may have become more
mixed with each consecutive conquest, or may have changed religions, but
essentially (especially in villages) the population remained constant-and is
now still Palestinian, though many villagers were tragically dislocated in
the 1948 Nakba."

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, "We are shocked that
Brandeis University, which is named after one of the greatest Zionist
figures in this country, should wish to be associated with Al-Quds
University, which unashamedly promotes on its website denial of the history
of Israel and the Jewish people, thus undermining Jewish rights to the land.
Al-Quds University, as the quotes above show, essentially engages in the
same denial of Jewish history as Yasser Arafat and other anti-Semites. A
major Jewish university such as Brandeis should be especially sensitive to
Jewish sensibilities and be careful not to bestow respectability to a
university that promotes anti-Israel and anti-Jewish falsehoods.

"This is straightforward propaganda. It has nothing to do with
genuine scholarship and has no place on the website of a university. It is
deeply troubling that Al-Quds University has been able to maintain this
website and deepen its connections with other institutions, including
Brandeis University, without being held to account for promoting false
claims about Jewish history. Al-Quds University is basically saying on this
website that the Jews are a fraudulent people with no connection to their
historical homeland. Al-Quds University does not deserve an association with
any university that deals with genuine scholarship when it promotes
falsehood and hatred.

"Brandeis University should have been aware of the nature of the
Al-Quds University website before dignifying the university with a formal
association, and if it was aware, it should have refused to formalize the
relationship. We strongly urge Brandeis, which carries an honored name and
reputation, to review immediately its relationship with Al-Quds University.
It should be a matter of concern to all Brandeis supporters and alumni that
Brandeis University is lending credibility and respectability to Al-Quds
University.

"This is especially troubling in light of the fact that Brandeis
continues to employ Khalil Shikaki as a scholar in its Crown Center for
Middle East Studies, a man who participated in panels at anti-Israel
conferences such as the Islamic Conference for Palestine (ICP) and
co-founded the World & Islam Studies Enterprise (WISE) with the notorious
University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian, who brought in as
speakers such outrageous figures as Omar Abdel Rahman, later convicted in
connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and Hassan Turabi, who
is generally considered the real leader of the terrorist Sudan government
and also was involved in transferring funds in the 1990s to the Palestinian
terrorist group, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, according to both the FBI and
renowned terrorism expert Steve Emerson."

General Anthony Zinni on the Iraq War By Brian General Anthony Zinni's is another voice in the chorus of voices that place blame for Iraq war squarely on the neo-conservative "cabal" in the Whitehouse. General Zinni was commander-in-chief of the United States Central Command, in charge of all American troops in the Middle East. That was the same job held by Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf before him, and Gen. Tommy Franks after. Zinni believes this was a war the generals didn’t want – but it was a war the civilians wanted. ... Zinni is talking about a group of policymakers within the administration known as "the neo-conservatives" who saw the invasion of Iraq as a way to stabilize American interests in the region and strengthen the position of Israel. They include Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz; Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith; Former Defense Policy Board member Richard Perle; National Security Council member Eliot Abrams; and Vice President Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby. Zinni believes they are political ideologues who have hijacked American policy in Iraq. “I think it's the worst kept secret in Washington. That everybody - everybody I talk to in Washington has known and fully knows what their agenda was and what they were trying to do,” says Zinni. “And one article, because I mentioned the neo-conservatives who describe themselves as neo-conservatives, I was called anti-Semitic. I mean, you know, unbelievable that that's the kind of personal attacks that are run when you criticize a strategy and those who propose it. I certainly didn't criticize who they were. I certainly don't know what their ethnic religious backgrounds are. And I'm not interested.” General Zinni is confirming what we have heard from so many others. Proof? My thesis is self-evident The anecdotal evidence is overwhelming: Liberals hate conservatives a lot more than conservatives hate liberals. I repeat: A lot more. You can ask anybody – or you could save yourself the time and just rely on some stuff people told Dennis Prager: Where I live in liberal Los Angeles, drivers of most vehicles with Bush-Cheney bumper stickers have told me (and I have often seen) that their cars (and mine) were deliberately scratched. When I have asked about the fate of cars with Kerry-Edwards stickers in equally conservative areas in, for example, Orange County or even the Bible Belt, no Democrat has reported such intentional damage to his car. This does not mean it never happens, only that it is far more rare. I would bet a lot of money -- and I am not a gambler -- that cars displaying conservative messages in liberal areas are far more likely to be defaced than cars with liberal messages in conservative areas. It’s hard to argue with such a cogent argument. So hard, in fact, that I considered giving up now and getting back to work before my boss fires me. But what the hell -- let's review the data set: Drivers have not only told Prager about the damage their vehicles have suffered by mean-spirited (and very hypocritical) liberal vandals -– but Prager has actually seen the damage. As in, "with his own eyes." In addition, Prager -- who bolsters his claim, I think, by reminding readers that he is not a gambling man, unlike his friend Bill Bennett -- states that he's willing to bet money that his conclusions would turn out to be accurate if he, or someone else, were to actually research the statistics. You know what? I've got an extra $12 I won for finishing second in our office NCAA pool, so I'll bite. Now, if there were only some relatively easy way to find some statistics on this, and preferably something I could do without leaving my desk... [Zeerp] "Hello, dum-dum." Oh sweet, it's the Great Gazoogle. And not a moment too soon. While this list is by no means comprehensive, David Neiwert has compiled a fairly extensive compare-contrast list of incidents reported to the police of threats, intimidation, property damage or other skullduggery during the 2004 campaign. Although the sample size might be artificially small because he does not, to my knowledge, cite any incidents reported by callers to Prager's talk radio show, Neiwert came up with a 33-8 ratio of politically motivated crimes committed by conservatives against liberals. Neiwert also lists a whole bunch more here, including examples of liberal misdeeds cited by Michelle Malkin in Unhinged (which Prager doesn't even bother to cite), but there's way too many to list, so let's talk about pies instead: When Ann Coulter goes to college campuses, she is accompanied by a bodyguard. And colleges routinely bring in police to protect her and to guard against student violence. No bodyguard or police contingent is necessary for Al Franken. Another leftist, Noam Chomsky, a man who has devoted his life to attacking America, goes from campus to campus without worrying about having so much as a pie thrown at him, something regularly done to conservative David Horowitz. Did you feel that, too, or was it just me? Because I could've sworn I just felt a shiver run up my spine. Regardless of your politics, I'm sure we can all agree that a pie in the face is far more intimidating than promoting legislation that threatens professors with lawsuits and dismissal for expressing views that David Horowitz disagrees with. And it really is a shame that someone who's issued death threats in her nationally syndicated column would feel compelled to hire a bodyguard, while some liberal who says things about America that are basically true but mean flaunts his freedom of speech at campus after campus. Life isn't fair: There are a few reasons for this discrepancy. One is that the more left one goes, the more one is likely to encounter people who substitute "social justice" for personal morality. Another is that in the eyes of most leftists, people who oppose their "progressive" views on the environment, the war and taxes are such morally inferior people that they are not owed decent behavior. But the biggest reason is the most obvious one: Liberals hate conservatives far more than conservatives hate liberals. Well, how about that? After a couple hundred words, it turns out that the thesis serves as its own proof. He could've saved us all a bunch of time by just titling his column "Who hates the other more - liberals or conservatives?" and writing his own shorter: "Liberals. And I've got some anecdotal evidence to back it up." (I could also point out that "the more right one goes, the more one is likely to encounter people who substitute 'social justice' for personal morality," but now that the New York Times has that conservative beat, I think we're all familiar with the Religious Right.) All this hatred sounds sort of ... I dunno ... hateful, as in, "full of hate." If only we could discover the well from which liberals draw their lumpen, pie-spewing hatred of conservatives, we might be able to roll back their bleak vision for America, which no doubt would involve lots and lots of pies flying toward the faces of their enemies as if their faces were some sort of futuristic pie magnets. Luckily, Dennis Prager's seen that well, and it's one I wouldn't think of making a wish and throwing a coin into, because a liberal would probably just give that coin to a panhandler -- or, shudder, someone who bakes pies: Liberals deem conservatives to be racist, homophobic, war mongering, money worshipping and sexist. It makes perfect sense to hate such people. I would, too. The converse is not true. Conservatives tend to view liberals as immature and foolish. But childish adults and fools don't merit the hatred that racists do. And the liberal charge that conservatives generally label war critics "traitors" is pure fabrication. Well, he's totally right about that pure fabrication part. I wrote a post about this a couple of months ago at my own blog, and it took forever to create all those fake links I used to "support" my list of people who've been called traitors. In fact, he's right about everything. Everything. I only tried to tear down his arguments as if I were a petulant child, angry at some mean ol' authoritarian father figure, because -- as all reasonable people are aware -- that's all liberals are capable of. We have no plan, and we aren't constructive. All we're good at is the politics of personal destruction, which we practially invented in the 1990s -- back when we did things just because they felt good. So take that, whitey: Cue the muted trumpet: Wah-waaahhhh.
