Iraqis’ Resistance To Civil War
Ghali Hassan, Countercurrents.org
The current propaganda campaign of distortion and disinformation perpetuated by Western journalists and media pundits that Iraqis "are being murdered solely because of their religious identity" is a falsehood. Iraq is not a sectarian society. The violence in Iraq is a US-generated criminal killing instigated by different groups of militia created, financed and armed by the US and its allies. The aim is to justify the ongoing Occupation, and draw att ention away from the US violent crimes in Iraq (...) There is no civil war in Iraq. The violence in Iraq is a US-orchestrated campaign to destroy Iraq’s nationalism and liquidate any opposition to the Occupation. The perpetrators of violence entered Iraq on the back of US tanks, and continue to have symbiotic (parasitic) relationships with the Occupation. They were no death squads and militias in Iraq before the invasion. They have infiltrated the new police and military. They are murdering anyone (men, women and children) and anything looks like anti-Occupation. "There is a civil war, but not between the religious groups, but between the party militias on one side and the people on the other", said Saleh al- Mutlak, chairman of the Sunni National Dialogue Front. In other words, attacks on civilians are perpetuated by the 'Occupation dogs’ in order to ignite civil war...

Learning to Count: The Dead in Iraq
Dahr Jamail and Jeff Pflueger
...How many Iraqis have died as the result of the Anglo-American invasion and occupation of their country remains an unresolved question in the anti-war movement. It is a question the pro-war camp avoids. Yet what more important question is there? The above quote made by the "compassionate conservative" shows a disturbing trend in the corporate media and amongst the spokespersons of the current powers that be, to camouflage the true cost of the ill egal occupation of Iraq - the cost in blood paid by Iraqis. It is a trend that ensures that the enormity of the atrocity goes unnoticed. Mr. Bush has cited a figure which is obviously taken from the popular anti-war web site Iraq Body Count (IBC), which proudly refers to its work on its home page as "The worldwide update of reported civilian deaths in the Iraq war and occupation"...

About Iraq - Not So Fast Colin Powell
Evelyn Pringle
This week I read an article by Rorbert Sheer, that said Colin Powell now says that he and his department’s top experts never believed that Iraq posed an imminent nuclear threat, but that Bush followed misleading advice from Dick Cheney and the CIA in making the claim. To that I say, not so fast Mr Powell, the time to come clean has long passed. In fact, the window of truth-telling time for you ended when the first US soldier was killed in Iraq. This admission pr oves that Colin knew the truth and could have stopped the freight train long before it made it to Iraq...

George W. Bush IS a Liar
Robert Parry
The White House is taking umbrage over new press reports that George W. Bush misled the American people on a key justification for invading Iraq. But Bush’s latest excuse – that he was just an unwitting conveyor of bad information, not a willful purveyor of lies – has been stretched thin by overuse. Nevertheless, White House spokesman Scott McClellan lashed out at a Washington Post report that in May 2003, Bush described two Iraqi railroad cars as mobile biological weap ons labs although two days earlier a Pentagon field investigation had debunked those suspicions in a report to Washington...

A statement from Iraqi Armed Forces General Command
Since the sacred land of Iraq has been maculated by the invaders-occupiers and by those who collaborated with them from inside and outside Iraq, your brothers belonging to the heroic Armed Forces were absolutely determined and resolute, first because they deeply believe in God Almighty and second, they stood steadfast defying and resisting this occupation and its creations which led to the present sectarian strife fomented and inflamed but still denied by the US occupation, its stooges and those with filthy intentions. Since that very time your brothers and your sons and daughters in the Armed Forces came forward with their field command to combat the enemy on our soil according to a clear strategy and in a successful tactical style, which made the enemy lick its wounds, drink the venomous cup of his deeds and of his wicked plotting...

Iraq: Faults and Bloods
an iraqi tear
...Rice came to Iraq after her admitting that they "the Americans" made thousands of tactical faults in Iraq!! Yet she assured that their "strategy" in Iraq was and still right! If the strategists were the National Security Agency or whoever, the appliers were Bush, his administration and the US military forces in Iraq… So Bush committed the faults but the strategic decision of invading Iraq was right!! Admitting the faults that generated till now more than 200 000 Iraqi civil ians victims, 2300 Americans were killed and the whole life and system in Iraq was destroyed. Without taking any real step toward saving Iraq and Iraqis; the only thing the world should realize that Bush has nothing in Iraq but to destroy the country...

How to Talk About Iran
David Swanson
...And why are we allowing to go unchallenged the idea that it would be all right to attack another nation if it did have nuclear weapons? Or (in some people's talking points and MoveOn's Email) that it might be all right to attack another country as long as we don't use nuclear weapons to do so? MoveOn says that a conventional attack would probably be a disaster. No. It would be a crime. It is illegal, immoral, and destructive in every way for one nation to attack another, no matter what weapons it possesses. And let's drop the pretense in any case that we would be attacking because of weapons. The US attacked Iraq and would attack Iran because they do NOT have weapons. If they did, the US would no more attack them than we are attacking Korea. The key point here is that the US should respect international law and stop launching aggressive wars, not that we should wait until Iran has weapons...

Iraq unrest forces 65,000 to flee
Andrew North , BBC
At least 65,000 Iraqis have fled their homes as a result of sectarian violence and intimidation, according to new figures from the Iraqi government. And the rate at which Iraqis are being displaced is increasing. Figures given to the BBC by the Ministry for Displacement and Migration show a doubling in the last two weeks of the number of Iraqis forced to move. There has been a sharp rise in sectarian violence since the bombing of an important Shia shrine in Febr uary...

US threats against Iran—the specter of nuclear barbarism
Statement of the WSWS Editorial Board
The revelation that the United States government has conducted advanced planning and preparation for a bombing campaign against Iran that includes the possible use of nuclear weapons represents the most serious threat posed in an increasingly unstable international situation. US imperialism has embarked upon a trajectory that will, if not stopped, lead to a world historic catastrophe that will make World War II pale by c omparison. That such an act could even be contemplated by the Bush White House should stun and horrify all those who are concerned with the fate of the world and the future of humanity...

Running from the blood
Firas Al-Atraqchi
... Loath as I am to agree with him, Krauthammer is absolutely right in his criticism that Fukuyama easily bends with the popular winds. Fukuyama is at best disingenuous and at worse an opportunistic coward. His defence -- claiming he had stood against the war before the invasion -- is immaterial. By that time, the military juggernaut was in full motion, with news now emerging that the Iraq war was conceived before the Bush administration came to power, and catapulted into full throttle after 9/11. It is also a historic imperative to remind Fukuyama that immediately after the tragic deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans on 11 September 2001, he urged an invasion of Iraq...

RAF doctor jailed over Iraq refusal
Guardian Unlimited
An RAF doctor was today jailed for eight months after being found guilty of failing to comply with lawful orders when he refused to serve in Iraq. Flight Lieutenant Malcolm Kendall-Smith - who likened the invasion of Iraq to a Nazi war crime - was convicted on five charges, including refusing to serve in Basra, by a court martial panel of five RAF officers. He will also be dismissed from the service. Kendall-Smith, a former university philosophy tutor who has dual British and New Zealand citizenship and is based at RAF Kinloss in Morayshire, Scotland, had argued that the ongoing presence of US-led forces in Iraq was illegal...

Sunnis accuse Iraqi forces of 68 murders
Kamal Taha
Prominent Sunni Arab leaders accused Shiite-led Iraqi government forces of killing 68 people in the past week, as political deadlock continued Thursday over the fate of embattled Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari. Amid increasing sectarian bloodshed which Sunnis blame on alleged government "death squads," the principal Sunni Arab organization in Iraq accused security services linked to the government of having tortured and killed 68 Iraqis. The Muslim Scholars Assoc iation said those killed had been detained from the southern Baghdad Al-Dura neighborhood on April 4, according to a statement dated Tuesday...

IRAQ: Women were more respected under Saddam, say women's groups
IRIN News
According to the findings of a recent survey by local rights NGOs, women were treated better during the Saddam Hussein era – and their rights were more respected – than they are now. "We interviewed women in the country and met with local NGOs dealing with gender issues to develop this survey, which asked questions about the quality of women's life and respect for their rights," said Senar Muhammad, president of Baghdad-based NGO Woman Free dom Organisation. "The results show that women are less respected now than they were under the previous regime, while their freedom has been curtailed"...

US allies are behind the death squads and ethnic cleansing
Jonathan Steele, The Guardian
...Iraqi leaders praised the militias, claiming they were subordinate to the defence and interior ministries, and therefore in no way a rogue element. The Badr organisation has even been put in charge of defending the home of the Shias' revered religious leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. The prime minister, Ibrahim Jaafari, described the Badr organisation last summer as a "shield" defending Iraq, while the president, Jal al Talabani, claimed the Badr organisation and the peshmerga were patriots who "are important to fulfilling this sacred task, establishing a democratic, federal and independent Iraq"...

Antiwar Petition and Talking Points on Iran
David Keppel
Bush is considering a nuclear strike on Iran - what are we going to do about it? Friends, Seymour Hersh reports in The New Yorker that President Bush is considering using nuclear weapons as part of a U.S. military strike against Iran. Despite the disaster in Iraq, there has been almost no Congressional opposition to attacking Iran. Senators John McCain, Hillary Clinton, Evan Bayh, and Joseph Lieberman have all said they would support using military fo rce as a "last resort" to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. When lawmakers say that, "last" resorts tend to come first, after the dance of non-negotiable negotiations has quickly played out...

Deja Vu Times Three
Billmon
Iran, defying United Nations Security Council demands to halt its nuclear program, may be capable of making a nuclear bomb within 16 days, a U.S. State Department official said. (Bloomberg News, Iran Could Produce Nuclear Bomb in 16 Days, April 12, 2006). My own highly placed sources in the intelligence community tell me this report is based on the debriefing of an Iranian defector codenamed "Spitball." But that's classified, so don't tell anyone except Judy Miller. Kinda reminds you of this bit, doesn't it? The Iraqi regime possesses biological and chemical weapons, is rebuilding the facilities to make more and, according to the British government, could launch a biological or chemical attack in as little as 45 minutes after the order is given....

Baath Party Statement
The 9th of April and the fatal response of the Resisting Baath in the war to liberate Iraq

The Arab Baath Socialist Party
...
We are living these days the third anniversary of the Occupation of Iraq and the fall of Baghdad on the 9th April 2003. Since that day every Iraqi, every Arab and every living human soul discovered the real essence of the Imperialist Zionist plot, its objectives and its various components including Iraq traitors, the stooges of the foreigners, the regimes they call themselves Arabs and the filled with hatred Iranian racist regime. This anniversary in spite of the deep suffering, sadness and sorrow it holds, we have witnessed through this period the regression and the collapse of the US Occupation project. Of course the price that the Iraqis paid was costly and dear but it was necessary, it will so stay until the utter rout of the Occupation and the liberation of every inch of the united and one soil of Iraq...

Rumsfeld lies, AP covers it up
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Here's what U.S. Secretary of Defense [sic] Donald Rumsfeld said today: "There is obviously concern about Iran. It's a country that is -- supports terrorists. It's a country that has indicated an interest in having weapons of mass destruction." Now read how AP reported the story, and pay very careful attention to the placement of the quotation marks: Said Rumsfeld: "There is obviously concern about Iran. Iran is a country that supports terr orism. It is a country that has indicated" a desire to obtain nuclear technology...

The Capitalist Manifesto
Lenin's Tomb
...Just as we once constructed boundaries in the Middle East, we will undo them as we see fit. Iraq will cease to exist. We will turn Iraq into three small protectorates, and they will compete to negotiate oil contracts with us. We will help divide Yugoslavia and turn two former components into UN dictatorships. Haiti will not have a government of its choosing. Iran will not be allowed to sass us: we will divide it too, into vassals and dependencies. Disaster is good for busin ess. We will allow New Orleans to be flooded, bulldoze the houses and rebuild it as a Disneyland for the rich, as we see fit. Our property rights are paramount, but yours are meaningless. Iraq's infrastructure will be destroyed. Oil prices will rise and we will get very very rich on futures. Another 9/11? Up goes the price of gold. Earthquake? Another contract for Halliburton...
