Exclusive Interview: Murray Waas on How Cheney "Authorized" Libby to Leak Classified Information
Democracy Now!
We turn now to the ongoing controversy over the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Three months ago Vice President Cheney's chief of staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby resigned after being charged with obstruction of justice, lying to the FBI and committing perjury before a federal grand jury in connection to the Plame case. So far Libby is the only White House official to be charged in the case. He is schedule to go on trial next January - two months after the mid-term elections. But newly released court documents raise new questions about the role of the Vice President in the affair...

Conyers Writes to Bush and Cheney
John Conyers, Jr.
Dear Mr. President and Mr. Vice President: Yesterday, the National Journal and AP reported that the Vice President's former Chief of Staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, had testified to a federal grand jury that as part of an effort to discredit Ambassador Joseph Wilson and defend your Administration's use of prewar intelligence, he had been authorized by the Vice President and other White House superiors to leak classified information to journalists. Moreover, correspondence filed by Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald also reveals that Mr. Libby has asserted that he had been authorized to disclose to the media a still-classified portion of a National Intelligence Estimate about alleged efforts to develop nuclear weapons to the media...

Credibility
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Without exception in any media I've been listening to today, the story of what George Bush said today goes like this: "George Bush disclosed today new details of a terrorist plot aimed at the tallest building in Los Angeles." Why do they do that? George Bush and his administration have no credibility whatsoever. This is the administration which claimed there were WMD in Iraq. This is the administration which says that the people locked up in Guantanamo are all members of al Qaeda and the "worst of the worst," when a recent report reveals that only 8% of them were actually al Qaeda (and I suspect even that number utilizes a loose interpretation). This is an administration which has repeatedly lied to the American people and the world about all sorts of things...

Ex-CIA official faults use of data on Iraq
Intelligence ‘misused’ to justify war, he says

Walter Pincus, The Washington Post
The former CIA official who coordinated U.S. intelligence on the Middle East until last year has accused the Bush administration of "cherry-picking" intelligence on Iraq to justify a decision it had already reached to go to war, and of ignoring warnings that the country could easily fall into violence and chaos after an invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Paul R. Pillar, who was the national intelligence officer for the Near East and South Asia from 2000 to 2005, acknowledges the U.S. intelligence agencies' mistakes in concluding that Hussein's government possessed weapons of mass destruction. But he said those misjudgments did not drive the administration's decision to invade...

Defense: the Only Salvation from US Imperial Aggression
Zack Krasuk, I'n'I
...What can the American people do? The fate of the world rests with you. You don’t have to lose your job. You don’t have to become a second Cindy Sheehan, a tree hugger or a hippie. But you can dedicate 30 minutes a day to writting letters to your congressmen and senators, organizing, protesting, making rallies, giving speeches at your local college, or anything within your power to contribute to Bush’s impeachment...

Neocons Weigh In on Iran's A-Bomb
Robert Dreyfuss
Robert Joseph and Richard Perle weighed in this week on the idea of attacking Iran. While many other neocon and right-wing commentators have done the same, Joseph and Perle are important because the former is a senior U.S. government official and the latter is considered the chief spokesman for the neoconservative faction outside the government...

Sunni Mosque Bombing In Iraq Kills Eight
AP
A car bomb killed at least eight people Friday outside a Sunni mosque in Baghdad and gunmen abducted a Sunni cleric, raising sectarian tensions as the election commission gave the final go-ahead for talks to begin in earnest on a new government. The blast occurred about 10 yards from the Iskan al-Shaabi mosque in the tense Dora neighborhood, shattering windows and showering glass on worshippers at the main weekly Muslim prayer service...

Do We Have To Arrest Bush & Company Ourselves?
Jesse, Editor TVNewsLIES
Do we have to make citizens’ arrests of Bush & company? We have smoking gun after smoking gun and the criminals in charge of our nation do nothing. It is quite clear they are all (with few exceptions) in on the crimes. We have TONS of EVIDENCE that both presidential elections have been stolen. That alone should be enough to arrest the people who have taken over our nation via electoral coup! But wait…there is more…lots more! We have EVIDENCE that there was inside involvement in 9/11…nothing happens. We have EVIDENCE that George W. Bush lied about the reasons for invading Iraq, about what he knew about the potential doom of Katrina in advance, and he knew (and may have been involved) about 9/11…nothing happens. We have testimony that Dick Cheney approved the leaking of top secret information…nothing happens. Do we have to arrest these criminals ourselves?...

Polls: Brainwashed Americans Support Iran Attack
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
As the scam artist George Hull knew, there is a sucker born every minute. It really is not very difficult to fool clueless Americans, brainwashed by corporate television, and get them on board the Straussian neocon plan to mass murder thousands, possibly millions of Arabs and Muslims. "The escalating crisis over Iran’s [nonexistent] nuclear program appears to have persuaded the U.S. public that Tehran now poses a greater threat to the United States than any other country, or even al-Qaeda, according to recent surveys," writes Jim Lobe...

The Devil lives in the detail
Demonising Iran

William Bowles , I'n'I
The latest dissection by Medialens of the corporate media’s devious and misleading coverage of Iran, is an excellent dissection of how the media distort and lie about events and, as the article points out, alleged intent on the part of the Iranians is almost always presented as a 'slip of the pen’ eg, "I accept that it would have been better to have said 'alleged nuclear threat’. I am sorry that my wording was not as precise as it could have been." (Email to Media Lens from James Robbins, BBC correspondent, January 24, 2005) "We should have said 'nuclear activities’, not 'nuclear weapons activities’." (Corrections and clarifications, The Guardian, February 7, 2006) But of course the damage has not only already been done, it continues to be done...

Petrodollars and Nuclear Weapons Proliferation: Understanding the Planned Assault on Iran
Michael Keefer, GlobalResearch.ca
Iran has been in the gun-sights of George W. Bush and his entourage from the moment that he was parachuted into the presidency in November 2000 by his father’s Supreme Court. A year ago there were signs, duly reported by Seymour Hersh and others, that the United States and Israel were working out the targeting details of an aerial attack on Iran that it was anticipated would occur in June 2005 (see Hersh, Gush Shalom, Jensen). But as Michel Chossudovsky wrote in May 2005, widespread reports that George W. Bush had "signed off on" an attack on Iran did not signify that the attack would necessarily occur during the summer of 2005: what the 'signing off’ suggested was rather "that the US and Israel [were] 'in a state of readiness’ and [were] prepared to launch an attack by June or at a later date. In other words, the decision to launch the attack [had] not been made" (Chossudovsky: May 2005)...

Twenty-Three Intel Experts Say LA Terror Plot a Sham
Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com
Following yesterday's highly suspiciously timed announcement that the US government had foiled a 2002 terror plot against the Los Angeles Library Tower, intelligence experts and White House reporters have uniformly debunked the story. As we reported yesterday, in an orchestrated set-up, George W. Bush announced that a plan to fly a plane into the LA Library Tower was thwarted in 2002 and within minutes news networks were showing footage of the same building being destroyed in the movie Independence Day...

200 Insiders Against the World
Inside the Global Dominance Group

PETER PHIILLIPS
The leadership class in the US is now dominated by a neo-conservative group of some 200 people who have the shared goal of asserting US military power worldwide. This Global Dominance Group, in cooperation with major military contractors, has become a powerful force in military unilateralism and US political processes. A long thread of sociological research documents the existence of a dominant ruling class in the US, which sets policy and determines national political priorities. C. Wright Mills, in his 1956 book on the power elite, documented how World War II solidified a trinity of power in the US that comprised corporate, military and government elites in a centralized power structure working in unison through "higher circles" of contact and agreement...

Hinchey Statement On News Report That Cheney Authorized
Congressman Maurice Hinchey, OrbStandard.com
Today's revelation in National Journal that Vice President Cheney and other White House superiors authorized Scooter Libby to disclose classified information to the news media in order to defend the Administration's use of pre-war intelligence on Iraq is alarming. That the vice president would put his own political gain before the safety and security of the American people by approving the release of classified information to the press warrants a full congressional investigation, including testimony from the vice president himself...

War Crimes and Commanders-in-Chief
George Bush and Tomoyuki Yamashita

DAVE LINDORFF
It's pretty easy to trace the war crime of torture in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay back to the Oval Office. The memos are all there. But George Bush is guilty of worse war crimes than torture, bad as torture may be. He is also guilty of violating another Geneva Convention involving the protection of non-combatants. The U.S. military has violated a number of basic international rules of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, not even counting the biggest one--starting an unprovoked war of aggression. For starters, there was the much-touted "Shock&Awe" campaign of aerial bombardment of Baghdad, which targeted markets, targeted sites located in residential districts, and which used weapons in an urban setting--depleted uranium shells, anti-personnel bombs, incendiary bombs, etc.--which were guaranteed to kill many civilians, and which in many cases are banned, or banned in such situations...

THE REAL ENEMY
Malcom Lagauche
...I would like to send a message to the Muslims who are outraged by the cartoon of the prophet. In the long run, the cartoonist is about as significant as a pimple on a pig’s ass. The real danger is monstrous: the hatred of Muslims and Arabs in the U.S. It is encompassing. Don’t lose sight of the real problem. Vent your anger with the cartoonist, but save your real actions for those who invade your countries and the stooges who support them, such as King Abdullah, Hosni Mubarak, the Saudi and Kuwaiti royal families and the stooges now operating Iraq. They offer much more harm to Islam than any cartoonist...

We Lost Iraqi Hearts and Minds Long Before the Current Occupation
Bert Sacks, Seattle Times (Washington)
I recently attended an alumni meeting in Seattle of a well-known East Coast college. The president of the college spoke and a hundred alumni came to listen. I used the chance to speak to several of them about something I know well from my nine trips to Iraq: the 12 years of U.N. and U.S. economic sanctions on Iraq, reinstated after the Gulf War in 1991 and ending with this war in 2003.
It was enlightening (...) Then I spoke with two more alumni, one a former Marine on his way to fish in the Caribbean. When I spoke about 500,000 dead Iraqi children, I felt I'd breached an unspoken rule of etiquette: One just doesn't talk about our responsibility for dead Iraqi children. The talk quickly went back to fishing...

Bush Recycles Terror Plot Disinfo in the Nick of Time
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
In a brazen effort to divert attention away from the lukewarm grilling of the Straussian neocons over the massive NSA violations of the Fourth Amendment, Bush "defended his anti-terrorist policies anew today, asserting that the United States and its allies had foiled a terrorist plot meant to bring down a Los Angeles building that is the tallest in the United States west of the Mississippi River," according to the New York Times. "Osama bin Laden himself was involved in the plot, which was to be carried out by Southeast Asian men on the assumption that they would not arouse as much suspicion as Middle Easterners, Mr. Bush told the National Guard Association"...
