Fighting Jim Crow in Israel
Mike Whitney
Ideas have consequences, and the effects of a racist ideology are suffering and destruction. The growing similarity between the debris-strewn Levant and the Gaza Strip are not accidental; they are the predictable results of a world-view which places the value of one people above another. In Israel, there is a two-tiered system of justice; one for Jews and another for non Jews; full-citizenship for Israeli-Jews and "Jim Crow" for Arabs. Is that acceptable Property rights,! marriage, citizenship and nearly every other area of legal protection are corrupted by the effects of institutionalized racism. We believe that there are no "second class" citizens, that every man deserves equal protection under the law. That is the fundamental principle of democracy. Israel calls itself a democracy, but its prevailing ethos of Zionism precludes an evenhanded application of the law...

Reflections on the Israeli holocaust in Lebanon
Khalid Amayreh
The month-long Nazi-like Israeli blitz in Lebanon, which has destroyed the bulk of the country’s civilian infrastructure and killed and maimed thousands of Lebanese civilians is probably redefining and morphing our world in many respects. Indeed, while Lebanon was being raped and decapitated, the world watched helplessly, silently even gleefully, as Israel’s diabolical war machine annihilated innocent civilians by the thousands and utterly destroyed h! omes, bridges, schools, mosques, power stations, airports as well as entire neighborhoods...

Video Israel Doesn’t Want You to See
Sabbah's blog
The Israeli army has expressed a note of contrition after a television station aired a videotape showing an army assault on a Palestinian home in which a mother of five children died (...) Huda Hawarjeh was one of seven people to die in the Bethlehem area that day. The Israeli army allows the media such close access on the understanding it can embargo anything it doesn’t want broadcast. The tapes of the assault on the Hawarjeh home fell into that category. But Ch! annel 2 broke the embargo anyway. The army, government and many Israeli citizens didn’t like what they saw. Channel 2 showed Hawarjeh begging soldiers to allow an ambulance through. The camera captured the terror of the woman’s daughter, and her brother’s attempt to stop her from showing the soldiers her fear...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 12 August 2006.
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.
...In a dispatch posted at 5:05pm Makkah time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation troops shot and killed in cold blood a 15-year-old Iraqi boy in ar-Ramadi, about 110km west of Baghdad Friday morning. The ar-Ramadi correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported al-Hajjah Khalidah Faraj al-'Alwani as saying, "The American forces e! xecuted my son behind the city courthouse," without providing any further details as she collapsed before the body of her son. Neighbors of the victim, however, explained that the boy had been arrested two days earlier by the Americans during a campaign of arrests in the city...

SNAPSHOTS OF THE CASUALTIES
The Voice of Cornwall
The child on the hospital bed was no more than a skeleton with a parchment of skin stretched over him. When I placed my palm on the hollow of his stomach there was no response. When I looked close into his dilated eyes, not a flicker. They were dead, brown orbs in their sockets. The doctor at the El Wafa hospital in Gaza explained that the boys in this room were almost entirely brain-dead. The medical staff cared for them as best they could. But soon they would di! e, in their vegetative state, from the head wounds they had suffered from Israeli mortars, shells and bullets. The impression of that boy flickered over my mind this week. The pity and the pitilessness of it all. Yet he and the others were only a few of the child casualties. Multiply them many times over. Magnify the extremities of their wounds. And then fast forward a few years...

Is an Armament Sickening U.S. Soldiers?
Deborah Hastings, AP
It takes at least 10 minutes and a large glass of orange juice to wash down all the pills — morphine, methadone, a muscle relaxant, an antidepressant, a stool softener. Viagra for sexual dysfunction. Valium for his nerves. Four hours later, Herbert Reed will swallow another 15 mg of morphine to cut the pain clenching every part of his body. He will do it twice more before the day is done. Since he left a bombed-out train depot in Iraq, his gums bleed. T! here is more blood in his urine, and still more in his stool. Bright light hurts his eyes. A tumor has been removed from his thyroid. Rashes erupt everywhere, itching so badly they seem to live inside his skin. Migraines cleave his skull. His joints ache, grating like door hinges in need of oil (...) "I'm just a zombie walking around," he says. Reed believes depleted uranium has contaminated him and his life...

Descent Into Moral Barbarism
Should Alan Dershowitz Target Himself for Assassination?

NORMAN FINKELSTEIN
As Israel's military bravely fires away shells and missiles to lay waste the fragile human and physical infrastructure of Lebanon, Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, waging battle on a second front to legitimize Israel's criminal aggression, bravely fires away op-eds from his foxhole at Martha's Vineyard to lay waste the fragile infrastructure of international law. These are but the latest salvo! es in Dershowitz's long and distinguished career of apologetics on behalf of his Holy State. Since becoming a born-again Zionist after the June 1967 war Dershowitz has justified each and all of Israel's egregious violations of international law. In recent years he has used the "war on terrorism" as a springboard for a full frontal assault on this body of law...

Letter from Lebanon
The Proximity of Death

BARUCHA PELLER
Death is close here. And some of us are not as close to death as others. The south of Lebanon is cut off from humanitarian aid. Here on the north side of the Litani River, the people in the south, taking the worse of the missiles and mortars of the Israel aggression, are always on our minds. There are whispers in the back of our thoughts: "How long do they have? How can we possibly get to them?" The roads and the bridges are bombed, cut and scar! red. Israel has banned movement south in the south. Any car that's on the road can be hit. UN convoys, ambulances, the BBC, the big names and those with Israeli clearances, have been hit. Now hunger hits bellies in the south. Their thirst must fit the water. There is no more. No medication for chronic illness, or for sicknesses caused by drinking polluted tap water in desperation, sicknesses that twist your intestines and swiftly take the lives of children...

The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned
Chris Floyd
In the oceans of newsprint and tsunamis of pixels expended on the London bomb plot stories over the last two days, I don't recall seeing -- anywhere, either in the US or UK media -- that one little word which differentiates honest journalism from the noxious regurgitations of state propaganda: "alleged." Everywhere, you read that a "bomb plot was thwarted" -- not an alleged bomb plot. Everywhere, you read that the plotters (or most of them) have been captured -- no! t the "alleged" plotters. Everywhere, whatever line is being laid down by "intelligence officials" and government poo-bahs is accepted uncritically and megaphoned out to the public. Everywhere the presumption of innocence -- one of the bedrock liberties of the "way of life" that we are supposed to be defending -- is gleefully tossed aside...
