Unless you have spent the last two weeks living in a remote jungle hut, you probably know all about Dick Cheney's hunting accident and the injury that prevented figure skater Michelle Kwan from competing in the Olympic Games. Odds are, however, you know very little about the new Chairman of the Federal Reserve. If such is the case, you may be comforted to know you are not alone. Very few people outside of the world of finance take much notice of such matters. Yet the Chairman of the Federal Reserve is perhaps the most powerful non-elected official in the world, whose decisions affect every aspect of our economy, from interest rates to the cost of groceries.
On the first of February, Ben Bernanke was officially sworn in as the new Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Bernanke was nominated for the post in November of last year, however his nomination did not receive much national attention. Besides being a TV ratings killer, the Bernanke hearings were upstaged by the controversial battle over Judge Samuel Alito. The Bernanke hearings took place quietly out of the public eye. So much so, that even some members of congress were surprised to learn of his nomination. Bernanke, a former professor of economics at Princeton University, has taken over for the recently retired Alan Greenspan, who was first appointed by Ronald Reagan and who held the post for nearly two decades.
The actions of the Federal Reserve have a significant effect on our daily lives. However the Federal Reserve itself remains something of a mystery to most Americans. In order to better understand the man behind the curtain, let us take a look into the history of the Federal Reserve.
In November of 1910, after having consulted with Rothschild banks in England, France, and Germany, Senator Nelson Aldrich boarded a private train in Hoboken, New Jersey. His destination was Jekyll Island, Georgia, and a private hunting club owned by J.P. Morgan.
Aboard the train were six other men: Benjamin Strong, President of Morgan's Bankers Trust Company; Charles Norton, President of Morgan's First National Bank of New York; Henry Davidson, senior partner of J. P. Morgan; Frank Vanderlip, President of Kuhn Loeb's National City Bank of New York; A. Piatt Andrew, Assistant Secretary of Treasury; and Paul Warburg. The secret meeting, as described by one its architects, Frank Vanderlip, went as follows:
"There was an occasion near the close of 1910 when I was as secretive, indeed as furtive, as any conspirator. I do not feel it is any exaggeration to speak of our secret expedition to Jekyll Island as the occasion of the actual conception of what eventually became the Federal Reserve System.
We were told to leave our last names behind us. We were told further that we should avoid dining together on the night of our departure. We were instructed to come one at a time... where Senator Aldrich's private car would be in readiness, attached to the rear end of the train for the South.
Once aboard the private car, we began to observe the taboo that had been fixed on last names. Discovery, we knew, simply must not happen, or else all our time and effort would be wasted..."
The goal was to establish a private bank that would control the national currency. The challenge was to slip the scheme by the representatives of the American people. Earlier, it had been called the Aldrich Bill and received effective opposition.
The devious planners of the revised bill titled it "The Federal Reserve Act" to mask its real nature. It would create a system controlled by private individuals who would control the nation's issue of money. Furthermore, the Federal Reserve Board, composed of twelve districts and one director (The Federal Reserve Chairman) would control the nation's financial resources by controlling the money supply and available credit, all by mortgaging the government through borrowing.
The conspirators had a problem, however. President William Howard Taft had made it clear he would veto such a bill if it was introduced. They had to make sure he would not win reelection. They first supported ex-President Teddy Roosevelt in the Republican primaries, but he failed to get the nomination. The bankers then supported the Democratic contender, Woodrow Wilson.
In exchange for their support, Wilson promised to sign their bill into law. But the polls indicated that Wilson would only draw about 45 percent of the votes. The bankers needed someone who could draw a sufficient number of Republican votes away from Taft without harming their Democratic candidate. They arranged for Teddy Roosevelt to run against both men by representing a newly invented third party: the "Bull Moose" party.
The plan worked. The Federal Reserve Bill was held until December 23 (two days before Christmas!) before it was presented to the House and Senate. Only those senators and congressmen who had not gone home for the holidays - those who owed favors to, or were on the payroll of, the bankers - were present to sign the legislation.
The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was a deliberate charade to pacify the American voters. They'd been crying out for banking reform and had held scores of elections, alternating one set of politicians with another, only to find themselves with the same programs and deeper debt.
The name "Federal Reserve Bank" was designed to deceive, and it still does. It is not federal, nor is it owned by the government. It is privately owned. It pays its own postage like any other corporation. Its employees are not civil service. Its physical property is held under private deeds and is subject to local taxation (government property is not). It is an engine that has created private wealth that is unimaginable, even to the most financially sophisticated. It has enabled an imperial elite to manipulate our economy for its own agenda and enlisted the government itself as its enforcer.
Meyer Amschel Rothschild's original plan was to facilitate "a new order of a one world government." This explains why the Great Seal of the United States, on the back side of the one dollar bill, bears the inscription Novus Ordo Seclorum: New World Order. I'll be returning to the "Grave Mysteries" discussion as soon as I can, but I don't have time tonight to do much more than point you toward this article in Wednesday's Village Voice (with thanks to Paul Thompson for the head's up), that makes sound parapolitical sense of the UAE port deal vetted by the office of John Negroponte.
Regarding the cuts to operational capacity of the Coast Guard and the inadequacy of Customs, James Ridgeway writes:

In fact, the United Arab Emirates have been viewed as hub for trade going and coming to Afghanistan, with drugs coming from Afghanistan on their way to the West, and weapons from Bout, going back. While transportation was via Bout's different air cargo interests, it also involved the Afghan state airlines, called Ariana Airlines. The airline was controlled by Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda agents masquerading as Ariana employees flew out of Afghanistan, through Sharjah, one of the emirates, and on to points west.
Bout, naturally enough for someone beyond the reach of any arm of justice, has been a wildly successful contractor to United States forces in Iraq. Last month, Douglas Farah wrote of Bout's Pentagon connections:
Wisconsin Democratic Senator Russell Feingold first raised the issue of Bout's coalition military contracts on May 18, 2004, in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. Feingold asked then-Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage about reports of U.S. military links to Bout's companies. It took Wolfowitz eight months to respond.
In a January 31, 2005, letter to Feingold, Wolfowitz acknowledged that "both the U.S. Army and the Coalition Provisional Authority (in Iraq) did conduct business with companies that, in turn, subcontracted work to second tier suppliers who leased aircraft owned by companies associated with Mr. Bout.... Although we are aware of a few companies that are connected to Mr. Bout, most notably Air Bas and Jetline, we suspect Mr. Bout has other companies or enterprises unknown to the Government."
In fact, as the Los Angeles Times first reported in 2004, Bout aircraft were in constant motion into Iraq after the invasion. A single Bout company, Irbis, flew more than 140 flights into Iraq for the U.S. military and its contractors by the end of 2004.
Over a period of eight years, the United States government has repeatedly asked the UAE to shut down Bout's businesse "as required by UN charter," but Dubai only ventures that it will "study" the issue. Of course: not only are the UAE's rulers Bout's business partners, but they can see the US winking at them even as it makes the "demand."
So there we have it, and a familiar narrative it is, too. Many observers have already concluded that the UAE deal wasn't about security - after all, the enemy is already within - but about money. It should be clear now what kind of money (the kind that's unaccounted for - the best kind), and why Bush made this, of all causes, the first for which he vowed to use a veto in its defense.
This seems a through the looking glass moment for many who stuck by the rhetoric of the administration until now. If this were a legitimate government and these were normal times, its officials would be back on their heels if they were still on their feet. But instead, they're even emboldened to piss away their base with a move that makes no political sense. But then, we're way past politics here.

Ports: All 'Bout a Dealer Named Bout
A Russian arms merchant funnels money, guns, and dope through the United Arab Emirates

WASHINGTON, D.C.�To hear the administration and its supporters talk, you'd think the workers in New York ports are carefully vetted by the Waterfront Commission, the ports themselves protected by the ever watchful Coast Guard, and routinely surveilled by U.S. Customs.
In truth,one administration after another has slashed the operational capability of the Coast Guard. Reagan even contemplated its privatization by a major defense firm. As for the Customs Service, it inspects as little as 5 percent of the cargo going through the New York ports.

The U.N. has accused Bout of providing arms to brutal regimes in Sierra Leone,Angola and to Charles Taylor in Liberia. The Center for Public Integrity, a Washington, D.C. research organization that operates a network of foreign correspondents, published a report on Bout in January 2002, citing Belgian intelligence documents from before the 9-11 attacks it had obtained. These documents reportedly show Bout earned $50 million in profits from selling weapons to the Taliban after they came to power in the late 1990s. The Center states, "Another European intelligence source independently verified the sales, and intelligence documents from an African country in which Bout operates�obtained by the Center�claim that Bout ran guns for the Taliban 'on behalf of the Pakistan government.' " Peter Hain, the British Foreign Office Minister for Europe who has led the international effort to expose criminal networks behind the conflict diamonds and small arms trade in Africa, told the Center's reporters, it was clear that Bout's supply of weapons to the Taliban "and to its ally, Osama bin Laden" posed a real danger.
Der Spiegel, the German magazine, said in early January 2002 that Vadim Rabinovich, an Israeli citizen of Ukrainian origin, along with the former director of the Ukrainian secret service and his son sold a consignment of 150 to 200 T-55 and T-62 tanks to the Taliban. Spiegel said the deal was conducted through the Pakistani secret service and uncovered by the Russian foreign intelligence service, SVR, in Kabul, the Afghan capital. A Western intelligence source told the Public Integrity Center that Rabinovich's weapons had been airlifted by one of Bout's airfreight companies from his base in the UAE.
Rabinovich denied all this, and Bout said "For the record, I am not, and never have been, associated with Al Qaeda, the Taliban, or any of their officials, officers, or related organizations," Bout said, according to a copy of the statement released in the United States by one of his associates. "I am not, nor are any of my organizations, associated with arms traffickers and/or trafficking or the sale of arms of kind [sic] anywhere in the world. I am not, nor is any member of my family, associated with any military or intelligence organizations of any country."
No one is suggesting Bout has any great love for the radical Muslim fundamentalists of Taliban ilk. He sold guns to the Russians fighting the CIA-backed Afghan mujahideen in their war with the Soviet Union and to the warlords opposing the Taliban. During the late 1990s Bout's center of operations was Ostend, Belgium, but when he came under pressure there, he left Belgium. The UAE office grew in importance.
Bout used various air cargo outfits. One of them was called Flying Dolphin, which in the early 2000s was owned by Sheikh Adbullah bin Zayed bin Saqr al Nayhan, a former UAE ambassador to the United States and member of the ruling family in Abu Dhabi. He was described by the United Nations as a "close business associate of Bout." According to the December 20, 2000, U.N. report, Zayed's company is registered in Liberia, but its operations office is in Dubai.

WASHINGTON, D.C.�No matter what Bush and his supporters say, there is indisputable evidence of tight connections between the United Arab Emirates and leadership of both the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The country is the center of financial activity in the Persian Gulf, and has next to no laws controlling money laundering.Two of the hijackers came from the UAE and hijacker money was laundered through the UAE. The details are spelled out in documents in the government's case against Moussaoui.
The ties with bin Laden and the Taliban reach far back into the '90s. Prominent Persian Gulf officials, including members of the UAE royal family, and businessmen would fly to Kandahar on UAE and private jets for hunting expeditions, the Los Angeles Times reported in 2001. In addition to ranking UAE ministers, these parties included Saudi big wigs like Prince Turki, the former Saudi intelligence minister who now is ambassador to the U.S.
General Wayne Downing, Bush's former national director for combating terrorism, was quoted on MSNBC in September, 2003 saying, "They would go out and see Osama, spend some time with him, talk with him, you know, live out in the tents, eat the simple food, engage in falconing, some other pursuits, ride horses. One noted visitor is Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktum, United Arab Emirates Defense Minister and Crown Prince for the emirate of Dubai.''
Bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar joined the hunting parties, and there are suspicions Al Qaeda and Taliban personnel are smuggled out on returning flights.
Here is one report, sourced to the 9-11 Commission, appearing in Paul Thompson's 9-11 timeline:
"February 1999: Bin Laden Missile Strike Called Off for Fear of Hitting Persian Gulf Royalty. Intelligence reports foresee the presence of bin Laden at a desert hunting camp in Afghanistan for about a week. Information on his presence appears reliable, so preparations are made to target his location with cruise missiles. However, intelligence also puts an official aircraft of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and members of the royal family from that country in the same location. Bin Laden is hunting with the Emirati royals, as he did with leaders from the UAE and Saudi Arabia on other occasions (see 1995-2001). Policy makers are concerned that a strike might kill a prince or other senior officials, so the strike never happens. A top UAE official at the time denies that high-level officials are there, but evidence subsequently confirms their presence. (9-11 Commission Report, 3/24/04 (B))"
It remains a key center of operations for Victor Bout, the notorious arms dealer, with ties to Taliban and Al Qaeda. There were also ties to the infamous BCCI.
As the Financial Times put it, in the UAE, "Western fraud investigators may find a link here or a connection there, with a person suspected of breaking western laws. But in Dubai, and its neighbor Sharjah, trails tend to vanish like wind-blown tracks in desert sands . . . Secrecy keeps everyone guessing�and speculating . . . 'Medieval feudalism' is how one senior western banker described Dubai's style of government, 'with a veneer of 21st century regulations.' "

The Dubai issue is very strange to me! BUt, It's not exactly new. I
am trying to connect some dots. Maybe you guys can help with that.
It seems to me we have been allowing companies with odd loyalties to
guard our most important bases and buildings for a long time. AKAL is
the company which guards many of our military bases and federal
buildings. OK. city Federal building was guarded by this company
(then it was under a different name.) They are a company owned by a
Sikh commune operating here in Santa Fe. They answer first to their
Guru. This has always bothered me. I suspect they use the tax
shelters of their commune to bid low and get government contracts.
They beat out the Security Union workers. Maybe this current

The Sikhs I know are nice people and they say their goal is world
peace but these AKAL employees carry guns and I am sure they will use
them. Its not just Yoga! Clearly AKAL has ties to Pakastain. The
question is where do their loyalties lie? Tom Udall and Bill
Richardson seem to be good friends of the commune and leader.
Something seems wrong about this. But what do I know? I've tried to
get reporters to look into this in the past but no one wants to touch

close to the National Guard here in Santa Fe and I see their vehicles

Activities

Sikh extremists probably bombed the Air India jet downed over the
Irish Sea in June 1985, killing 329 passengers and crew. On the same
day, a bomb planted by Sikhs on an Air India flight from Vancouver
exploded in Tokyo's Narita Airport, killing two Japanese baggage
handlers.
In 1991, Sikh terrorists attempted to assassinate the Indian
Ambassador in Romania-- once India's senior police officer in Punjab
from 1986 to 1989--and kidnapped and held the Romanian charge in New
Delhi for seven weeks.
In January 1993, Indian police arrested Sikhs in New Delhi as they
were conspiring to detonate a bomb to disrupt India's Republic Day,
and, in September 1993, Sikh militants attempted to assassinate the
Sikh chief of the ruling Congress Party's youth wing with a bomb.
Sikh attacks in India, ranging from kidnappings and assassinations to
remote-controlled bombings, have dropped markedly since mid-1992 as
Indian security forces have killed or captured a host of senior Sikh
militant leaders. Total civilian deaths in Punjab have declined more
than 95 percent since more than 3,300 civilians died in 1991.
The drop results largely from Indian Army, paramilitary, and police
successes against extremist groups.

I checked.... and this story is accurate. The Free Trade Zombies are at it again. Our ports must be the price to ink the deal. 'Free trade' is not about trade. During George H.W. Bush's administration, foreign policy was changed to be trade policy - and they've been selling us out ever since.... NAFTA, WTO, CAFTA, ASEAN, India-US, etc.
They've been selling us out... industry by industry.

The Dirty Little Secret Behind the UAE Port Security Flap
Politicians and the media are loudly decrying the Bush administration's
proposal to turn over port security to a firm owned by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - a country with ties to terrorists. They are talking tough about national security - but almost no one is talking about what may have fueled the administration's decision to push forward with this deal: the desire to move forward Big Money's "free" trade agenda.
How much does "free" trade have to do with this? How about a lot. The Bush
administration is in the middle of a two-year push to ink a corporate-backed
"free" trade accord with the UAE. At the end of 2004, in fact, it was Bush Trade Representative Robert Zoellick who proudly boasted of his trip to the UAE to begin negotiating the trade accord. Rejecting this port security deal might have set back that trade pact. Accepting the port security deal - regardless of the security consequences - likely greases the wheels for the pact.
That's probably why instead of backing off the deal, President Bush - supposedly Mr. Tough on National Secuirty - took the extraordinary step of threatening to use the first veto of his entire presidency to protect the UAE's interests. Because he knows protecting those interetsts - regardless of the security implications for America - is integral to the "free" trade agenda all of his corporate supporters are demanding.
The Inter Press Service highlights exactly what's at stake, quoting a
conservative activists who admits that this is all about trade:
"The United States' trade relationship with the UAE is the third largest in
the Middle East, after Israel and Saudi Arabia. The two nations are engaged in bilateral free talks that would liberalise trade between the two countries and would, in theory at least, allow companies to own and operate businesses in both nations. 'There are legitimate security questions to be asked but it would be a mistake and really an insult to one of our leading trading partners in that region to reject this commercial transaction out of hand,' said Daniel T. Griswold, who directs the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute, a Washington-based libertarian think tank."
Look, we've seen this before. Just last year, Congress approved a U.S.
taxpayer-funded loan by the Bush administration to a British company to help build nuclear technology in Communist China. Despite major security concerns raised - and a legislative effort to block the loan - Congress's "free traders" (many of whom talk so tough on security) made sure the loan went through so as to preserve the U.S.-China free trade relationship that is allowing lawmakers' corporate campaign contributors export so many U.S. jobs.
There is no better proof that our government takes its orders from corporate
interests than these kinds of moves. That's what this UAE deal is all about -
the mixture of the right-wing's goal of privatizing all government services
(even post 9/11 port security!) with the political Establishment's desire to
make sure Tom-Friedman-style "free" trade orthodoxy supercedes everything.
This is where the culture of corruption meets national security policy - and, more specifically, where the unbridled corruption of on-the-take politicians are weakening America's security.
The fact that no politicians and almost no media wants to even explore this
simple fact is telling. Here we have a major U.S. security scandal with the
same country we are SIMULTANEOUSLY negotiating a free trade pact with, and no one in Washington is saying a thing. The silence tells you all you need to know about a political/media establishment that is so totally owned by Big Money interests they won't even talk about what's potentially at the heart of a burgeoning national security scandal.

I put this together in a hurry because of the revelation that the U.S. is in 'free trade' negotiations with the UAE. In a modern, technology based economy the majority of people depend on jobs for their economic survival. The days when we could go hunt and gather for a living have been over for a very long time. So why is the government forcing jobs-producing industry out of our country through 'free trade' agreements that give trading preferences to third world countries?
Costs to produce in a developed country are already higher than in the third world. It's national suicide to sign trade agreements that give preferences to the third world - putting our producers at an additional disadvantage over the already higher costs.
In the statement below, Robert Zoellick reveals the truth about so-called 'Free Trade'. It has not been an economic policy to create wealth. In fact, it is just the opposite. It is redistribution of wealth, taking from the working stiff in the United States.. and giving to the virtual slave in China and the working stiff in India and the transnational corporations laugh all the way to the bank.
It's bankrupting our country because every job that is exported, takes it's tax base with it - leaving a population of people with no means to make a living. It's creating two classes of people - the extreme wealthy - and the poor - which is making us ripe for the socialist takeover that has been planned since even before 1945.
If our enemies had planned for the demise of our country, they couldn't have done a better job than the trade negotiators.

Under George H.W. Bush, foreign policy became economic policy and the process of dismantling our nation began. Robert Zoellick, working for Bush was the chief architect of the strategy to subvert the Constitution and dismantle our country through trade agreements.

Zoellick shuttled all over the world during the Bush Sr. administration to promote U.S. global economic policy. Before the founding of the World Trade Organization, Zoellick was the Bush administrations top negotiator with the European Union at a time when the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations was blocked by U.S.-European differences over agricultural trade liberalization. He helped break the logjam by forging the Blair House Accord, which helped save the foundering Uruguay Round.

A strong world economy enhances our national security by advancing prosperity and freedom in the rest of the world. Economic growth supported by free trade and free markets creates new jobs and higher incomes. It allows people to lift their lives out of poverty, spurs economic and legal reform, and the fight against corruption, and it reinforces the habits of liberty.
We will promote economic growth and economic freedom beyond America's shores. All governments are responsible for creating their own economic policies and responding to their own economic challenges.We will use our economic engagement with other countries to underscore the benefits of policies that generate higher productivity and sustained economic growth, including:
� pro-growth legal and regulatory policies to encourage business investment, innovation, and entrepreneurial activity;
a.. tax policies-particularly lower marginal tax rates-that improve incentives for work and investment;
b.. rule of law and intolerance of corruption so that people are confident that they will be able to enjoy the fruits of their economic endeavors;
c.. strong financial systems that allow capital to be put to its most efficient use;
d.. sound fiscal policies to support business activity;
e.. investments in health and education that improve the well-being and skills of the labor force and population as a whole; and
f.. free trade that provides new avenues for growth and fosters the diffusion of technologies and ideas that increase productivity and opportunity.
Treason By Trade
The 'free trade' agreements are Treason by Trade. These trade agreements are a rigged game in which our domestic producers are put at a disadvantage. Goods from foreign countries can be imported into the U.S. duty free. The foreign trading 'partners' are allowed to continue to charge punitive tariffs (as high as 40%) on goods entering their country. This means that our domestic producers have no market for their goods plus they have to compete with cheaper imported goods. Naturally they are dropping like flies. Succinctly stated, the trade agreements are being used to arbitrage against our own economic interests as a nation.
Add to the above, tax breaks are given to help manufacturers and now knowledge businesses move out of our country - into the foreign countries with the preferential trade terms. This is not only draining our country of the wealth, it is robbing us of the knowledge base that made us a superpower in the first place. Within 10-15 years we will no longer have the capability - financial or intellectual to rebuild our manufacturing base and we are fast losing the knowledge industries. We are headed for the third world because we can't even feed our own population - we have become a net importer of agricultural products.
The prescriptive for the loss of manufacturing and knowledge industries is the importation of cheaper labor thereby driving wages down and causing the elimination of benefits. The propaganda says that we have gotten lazy, fat and stupid - none of which is true. It won't make any difference how many cheaper workers they import - because the trade agreements are written to ensure that the U.S. businesses can't compete. As the domestic businesses fail, the multinational corporations move in to pick up their share of the market. Walmart is the best known example of this predation by the multinational corporations.
Add to this, the massive importation of cheaper labor is stressing our infrastructure to the breaking point - hospitals are closing, schools are failing. We are losing the tax base to pay for the infrastructure as production and jobs are exported. The jobs that are being created are not only low paying (Walmart) but because of the reduced benefits or no benefits, it is stressing our social safety nets to the breaking point.
We're on a downward death spiral because of the trade agreements that have been signed - Treason By Trade. Economic warfare waged against us by traitors within our own government.
What we need is a constitutional amendment to define the crime of Economic Treason and we should make it retroactive so that we can hang the bastards who have done this to our country.
