HOMELAND SECURITY SPELLS “P-O-R-K”

In March, 2003, 22 different federal agencies were combined into the new cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security - the largest single government reorganization since the creation of the Department of Defense in 1947. The tab for this enterprise has risen astronomically as well. From a budget of $13 billion devoted to homeland security in 2000, the total now approaches $50 billion. Not all of it has been well spent. Some was, for instance, used to purchase silk plants and artwork decorating offices that were involved in an agency's birthday celebration. Other dollars, large amounts, went to purchase airport scanners that - as it turns out - could not tell a nuclear bomb from a banana.
