The Middle East is Burning
The BRussells Tribunal Slanders Uruknet

Uruknet Editorial Staff

Dear Readers,
More than three years ago Uruknet started its independent media project, "information from occupied Iraq". In these Orwellian times we have offered our readers with news and comments from a wide range of sources. Without sponsors, public or private funding our staff work on a volunteer basis in solidarity with the Iraqi People’s just struggle for freedom and independence against the illegal and immoral invasion and occupation of their country. In critical moments it’s our moral duty to stay close to the facts against the perils of rewriting history, without conceding points that shouldn't be conceded. We believe this is more important than any other consideration. It’s in this spirit that we release this editorial. - Uruknet Editorial Staff

Switching off Life Support.
Felicity Arbuthnot
...Protocol 1 defines inhumanity's limits in conflict, making specific, through listing examples, principles that were and are inherent in many human rights and humanitarian law instruments. Though signatury to the 1949 Geneva Convention, the State of Israel refused and continues to refuse to sign the Additional Protocol, which essentially is prohibiting genocide. A unique irony for a country whose people have suffered one, within historically recent memory. US Comma! nder in Chief, President Bush is famous for not reading (last known attempt : 'My Pet Goat', to a group of school children, pictured with him holding it upside down), Prime Minister Blair, QC., would seem to have the attention span of a gnat and seemingly has not found the time - and Israel's leaders clearly don't care. So much for the Protocol 1, which Israel has, not signed; the US (whose missiles and bombs rain down on Palestine and Lebanon) has signed but not ratified. Thus Israel gives itself "legal" license to do exactly what is prohibited in the Convention. That it can does not mean that it can forever get away with it...

Congressional Democrats on Iraq: New tactics, more war
Patrick Martin
In a letter to President Bush issued July 30, the top congressional leaders of the Democratic Party have pledged their support for an American victory in Iraq, while criticizing the administration’s tactics and methods and calling for the "phased redeployment of US forces" to deal with other crises facing American imperialism around the world. The letter was signed by the Senate and House minority leaders, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, by their ! deputies, Richard Durbin and Steny Hoyer, and by the senior Democrats on the Senate and House committees with responsibility for the Pentagon, foreign policy, intelligence and the military appropriations. The 12 signatures make the document the most broadly based and definitive statement of Democratic Party policy on the war in Iraq...

An atrocity too far
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Yesterday, Israel brutally murdered 33 Syrian farm workers in the town of Qaa in Lebanon, firing U.S.-made and supplied missiles from U.S.-made and supplied jets. A massacre, a war crime of the first order, quite possibly committed with weapons supplied by the U.S. since the shooting began. So how did the media, saturated with similar atrocities occuring nearly every day, treat this news? The New York Times has a front page article on the assault on Lebanon. It! 's headline says "Israeli Air Raids Destroy Bridges North of Beirut," giving no hint of the massacre in Qaa..

Israel Is a Failed Colonial Project:
No to U.S.-Israeli War Crimes Against the

The Marxist-Leninist Daily
TML reiterates its condemnation of the Canadian government's support of the crimes Israel is committing against the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples. It calls on members and supporters to mobilize rank-and-file workers and broad sections of the people to bring to power in Canada an anti-war government which upholds the right of all nations to their sovereignty and opposes the use of force to settle confli! cts. Such a government must demand the enforcement of the Palestinian people's right to build a modern nation-state that can come to an accommodation with all people living in the Palestinian homeland, free of the constant threat posed by the foreign military base in their midst known as Israel. Such a government must also hold Israel to account for its violation of more than 70 United Nations resolutions, beginning with Resolution 273 which made Israel's membership to the UN conditional on its implementation of Resolution 181 which defined the borders of partitioned Palestine and Resolution 194 which proclaimed the Palestinian refugees' inalienable right of return. Since 1949, Israel has refused to implement Resolution 273. In other words, Israel is a rogue state and the Canadian government's position in support of Israel is in complete violation of international rule of law...

Panic in Detroit
Kurt Nimmo
In Dearborn, Michigan, Arab demonstrators are holding up portraits of Sheik Hassan Nasralla, "chanting his name and Hezbollah," according to the Detroit Free Press. "We find any support for murderous terrorist organizations like al-Qaida or Hezbollah very disappointing, if not disturbing," Eric Straus, chief of the counterterrorism unit at the U.S. attorney’s office in Detroit, told the newspaper. "Our office’s No. 1 priority is preventing another terrorist attack," reports the Associa! ted Press. Of course, Hezbollah is not "al-Qaeda," the infamous CIA-ISI made-to-measure terror group. Hezbollah is a legitimate resistance group, completely legal under international law, minus its stupid rocketing of Israeli settlements. But then we shouldn’t expect the U.S. attorney’s office to admit this. It should come as no surprise Nasralla and Hezbollah would find support in Detroit’s Arab community, or for that matter among Arabs and Muslims anywhere...

The Day after Qana Massacre
Who Cares?

Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar
Those that know the "real" history of the Middle East are not shocked with the recent tragic deaths of so many innocent people. They know that this episode, along with so many other atrocities will soon be forgotten. It is the nature of things that it is always the winners and the powerful that write the history. The weak and the conquered are always the ones that are blamed for all the misfortune that has befallen them. Looking back, we see that the! se atrocities have been happening for a long time and with some regularity. Those involved then are indirectly involved now. They cheer, the slaughter of the innocent and the defenceless, now as they did then. Iraq in 1920s (as she is today) was occupied by a western power, namely Britain. T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) a colonel in the British army seeing the atrocities committed by British army questioned the morality of what the British government was doing in Iraq...

US-Israeli war aim is to annihilate Lebanon
World Socialist Web Site Editorial Board
The sharp escalation of the attacks against Lebanon Friday have made it abundantly clear that the objective of this US-Israeli war of aggression is to demolish Lebanon as an independent and sovereign country. The war is aimed at transforming the country into an occupied territory controlled by the US and Israel, perhaps through the medium of a NATO "peacekeeping" force. The destruction of Lebanon is being carried out quite delibe! rately, and with very definite designs. For Israel, it is yet again a matter of annexation of more territory. And for Washington, it is the preparation of new and even bloodier wars, directed in the first instance against Syria and Iran...

Bad Apples from a Rotten Tree
Military Training and Atrocities

Sgt. MARTIN SMITH, USMC (Ret.)
The mounting revelations of war crimes in Iraq have ripped the mask of democracy and nation-building off of a fatigued and wearied Uncle Sam, revealing the true face of U.S. imperialism. At least thirty U.S. servicemen are being prosecuted or are under investigation for the murder of Iraqi civilians. Twenty-one year old Steven Green, who served in the 502nd Infantry Regiment, was charged with the gang rape and! murder of a fourteen-year old Iraqi girl in Al-Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad. The accused, with the assistance of five other soldiers, allegedly premeditated the attack and carried it out in broad daylight. After a drinking bout, the soldiers changed out of their uniforms and Green covered his face with a brown skivvy undershirt to avoid detection as they entered the woman's house to commit the crime. After the sexual assault, they murdered her and poured a flammable liquid over her body to destroy the evidence. Afterwards, Green shot the victim's parents and sister in the head, execution-style. The soldiers made a pact to never discuss the incident...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 4 August 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice
...In a dispatch posted at 12 noon Makkah time Friday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a US fighter plane struck areas in the border strip that divides Iraq from Syria on Friday. The al-Qa’im correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses who live in the Makr adh-Dhib area five kilometers from the Syrian border as saying that an American fighter plane! struck desert areas in the strip that lies between the Iraqi and Syrian border outposts. The reason for the American air strike were unclear. The correspondent pointed out that the no-man’s-land along the border is empty desert country with no buildings. The Americans were therefore probably targeting individuals trying to cross the frontier in an area where there are many border crossings by individuals on foot...

Lebanon: Israel wages war of starvation
Associated Press
Israel is waging a "war of starvation" on Lebanon's civilians in an effort to force the government to agree to Israel's demands, Lebanese President Emile Lahoud said in a statement issued Friday. His comments came after Israeli warplanes bombed bridges and roads in Christian neighborhoods north of Beirut, killing five civilians and making travel between suburbs increasingly difficult. Missiles struck the country's main north-south highway - its primary arte! ry to the outside world, through Syria in the north. "The Israeli enemy's bombing of bridges and roads is aimed at tightening the blockade on the Lebanese, cutting communications between them and starving them," Lahoud said...

Warning.
Iraqi picture said to be from Lebanon

Some websites are running a picture coming from Iraq, thinking it is from Lebanon. Israeli propaganda is working full time, to discredit the real story coming from Lebanon and Palestine. One of the propaganda technique is for example to distribute false pictures in order to undermine the credibility of the real ones. We don't doubt the good faith of the websites that posted this picture, but please, be careful on the origin of the photos you ! publish.

Israel To Hezbollah: Please Bomb Tel Aviv
KABOBfest
In effect that is what Israel is doing. Yesterday, Hezbollah secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, declared terms for truce, saying that his group would stop firing at Israel, if Israel stops its attacks at Lebanon. Conversely, he threatened that should Israel attack Beirut, Hezbollah would attack Tel Aviv. Israel’s immediate response, which came so fast makes you think it was instinctive, rather than deliberated, was to intensify the bombing of Lebanon, targetin! g Beirut and infrastructure like bridges, including 24 air raids against Beirut in less than an hour last night...

Traumatised and Afraid - 300,000 Children Who Want to Go Home
Anne Penketh and Kim Sengupta, the Independent / UK
"I don't want to die. I want to go to school," says Jamal, a four-year-old Lebanese boy scarred by the Israeli bombing of his country. Home for Jamal is now a "displacement centre" in the southern town of Jezzine, where his family fled in fear for their lives. "We've had our picnic, and we want to go home now," says another child, staying in a makeshift refugee camp in the Sanayeh public gardens in Bei! rut. "We are bored and afraid and we want to go home," says another. These are the voices of the dispossessed of Lebanon, the hundreds of thousands of children whose world was changed forever in the seconds that followed the explosion of a bomb. "Mummy, what is a massacre?" another child asks...
