sir,

do you have a broad band connection?

if so I'll go ahead and send you a couple of videos if you would like to watch them.

"unlike a conventional demolition." You are allowed to say that here?
Seriously, is that fact allowed to be stated in this forum? First I
read no censoring on this 911 Truth Action group yet Kevin Hammond has
a fit when facts are presented that he doesn't like and he threatens
to ban me.

One of the CONSTANT mantras of the "9/11 truth" movement is that it
was like a conventional demolition. This is supposed to be one of the
important clues that it was an "inside job" yet Alan Random has dared
state the fact that it was "unlike a conventional demolition."

So what is the verdit of the moderator? I am serious. Is Alan Random
at risk of being banned too for saying that the WTC collapses were
"unlike a conventional demolition?"

Just get one of them Linda, And see for yourself. In regards to Mr. Barry
Zwicker, I personally do not much vare for him. But his documentary is
relatively good, Though it is a bit limited in scope.

I agree that the documentaries are the best way to view the historical
events. (Thinking out loud here!) Howe! ver, as we all ! know even those can
be doctored or slanted towards the views of the beholder. With the
reclassification of federal documents, it may even be harder to show
accurate documentaries. With the vast amount of material out on 911 (both
sides of the issue)……which ones are worth reading and/or viewing, and which
ones are not? How does one compile such a list with truth being in the eyes
of the beholder? What does Alex Jones say or do that makes him a person of
interest? Or, should I say more interesting than any other or others? “As
scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.”
Josh Billings

So what happened to the brain-washing with us? Why aren’t we convinced by
what we are being told by our government? Why do we think outside of their
box? Are we failures of the system?

no problem and welcome to the frontlines for the battle of the minds of
fellow americans!

1. I think the documentary loose change offers the best eyewitness accounts
that are contrary to the official story. and then there's alex jones' stuff
that you can download off the web or from peer to peer networking.

2. in some form or another i believe people have tried to contact mainstream
media, to no avail because the upper echelons of ! the press are bought and
paid for. therefore set the tone for the low-level monkeys to follow suite.
google project mockingbird and you'll understand that the media is an
accessory after the fact.

3. MANY people have made documentaries about the 911 fraud and written
books.

my friend cathy garger and fellow truth activist has read and recommends
webster tarpley's 911 synthetic terror.
!
4. fear, willful denial, unnerving sense that reality is really not what as
it appears to be. governmen! ts lie, trauma-based mind control.....because
we watched in horror people dying on TV which is a tramatic experience and
then apply conditioning that some bearded boogeyman in a cave did it, and
you will beleive it because of the trauma you had undergone.

glad to have you onboard!

1. ! Has the material in regards to the differential views, of 911
been sent to the major news channels, as well as the major news
programs……..Like 60 minutes?
2. If so what was the response from them?
3. Has anyone been approached or done a movie documentary on this?
!
4. What is the opinion of why so many people are buying into the
government’s propaganda once again?

Still lots to learn before speaking out to loud on this.

Orders to U.S. factories for manufactured goods fall by largest amount in 5.5 years

WASHINGTON — Orders to U.S. factories for big-ticket manufactured goods fell by the largest amount in 5.5 years in January as demand for commercial aircraft suffered the biggest setback in seven years, the government reported today.
The Commerce Department said that orders for durable goods, everything from computers to cars, fell by 10.2 percent last month, a much bigger decline than had been expected.

The weakness was led by a 68.2 percent drop in orders for commercial aircraft reflecting a falloff in sales at Boeing Corp. after two very strong months. Analysts said the overall decline overstated the weakness in manufacturing because it was so heavily influenced by the volatile aircraft sector.

Excluding airplanes, cars and other transportation products, orders posted a solid 0.6 percent rise after an even larger 1.9 percent increase in December.

While the economy slowed dramatically to a growth rate of just 1.1 percent in the final three months of last year, economists are looking for a sizable rebound in the first three months of 2006, with some forecasting growth will top 5 percent at an annual rate.

Part of that strength is expected to come from manufacturing, which is expected to do well as businesses, bolstered by rising sales and strong profits, step up spending to expand and modernize.

Orders for non-defense capital goods, considered a good barometer of business investment plans, fell by 20 percent in January. However, most of that weakness reflected the drop in airplane orders. Excluding aircraft, non-defense capital spending was down a more modest 0.4 percent following a big 5 percent jump in December.

For January, total orders fell by $23.6 billion to $207.2 billion. The 10.2 percent decline was the biggest since a 14.2 percent drop in July 2000.

The 68.2 percent fall in commercial aircraft orders was the biggest plunge in this category since an 80.1 percent drop in December 1998.

Boeing took orders for 39 planes in January, a good showing for January but down from the huge 204 orders booked in the closing weeks of 2005. Orders for defense aircraft also fell in January, dropping by 22 percent.

Overall, orders for transportation products were down 31.2 percent to $54 billion. Orders for autos and auto parts fell by 3.3 percent following a 6.5 percent rise in December.

Orders for computers were down a sharp 11 percent in January while orders for machinery fell 2.5 percent.

Subject: RE: 3rd. Plane

Kitty,

I have the distinction of having watched 2 different TV stations from 8
minutes after the first plane hit, to 4 hours later.

I am not the person who ahs done loads of research, all I can state for
certain is what I saw and was told as the events occurred that morning,
between my breaks of screaming out my front door that "we are under attack
and the US Military is no where to be found!"

I got through that hard curve of disbelieving that those in charge of the
defense of our country would betray us, sacrifice citizens for their own
causes, the hard way that morning, from there, good folks like many here,
Alan Ramdon for one, have put together other details I wasn't privy to that
morning.

The interview with the Colonel was made national security along with all of
the tapes for the 'supposed plane' that hit the Pentagon. I doubt it was a
Passenger plane on the simple fact that they don't want us to see what it
was that hit.

The Colonel stated, and the reporters had him repeat, there were 5 confirmed
boogies that the FAA had reported, that had doubled back on their courses
from the Boston area to head towards the Wash DC NYC area and one had
already hit the Wash DC area, and that his planes were still grounded and
unarmed as ordered by his superiors.

For the life of me, I can't understand why that tape would have been
confiscated and the US Public not allowed to see it for their own eyes.
<dripping sarcasm>

So with the plane that supposedly hit in the Pennsylvania field, that is 4
planes. after that, all I can do is guess. In fact, I seem to be about the
only person that knows there were 5 planes. I have only heard from one other
person that says that they saw that interview. Pretty damning, and they have
been getting away with it, but the lies are getting harder and harder to put
forth as truth.

I am not sure what you mean by 'the let's roll plane'.

Have you checked out the files area of the group yet?

Scott

Republican Congressman Predicts Bush Impeachment

Says US close to dictatorship

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/march2006/030306bushimpeachment.htm
Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | March 3 2006

Republican Congressman Ron Paul has gone on record with his prediction
that the impeachment of George W. Bush is right around the corner but
warned that in the meantime the US was slipping perilously close to a
dictatorship.

Appearing on the Alex Jones Show and addressing the port sell-out, Paul
stated that, "it probably will contribute to the Republican's failure in
the next election."
Asked if the Democrats would use gains in the mid-term elections to set
in motion impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush, Paul
responded,

"I predict that would happen."

"I think he (Bush) has numerous things that the Democrats if they get a
chance, not only will they be after him for that but it will be payback
for the Clinton impeachment."

Paul was inclined to believe that the port sales would go ahead anyway
but took a positive perspective in pointing out that it again
highlighted George W. Bush's complete abandonment of conservative
principles.

"At least this has awakened a lot of people and I think this is going to
serve as a benefit," said Paul. "They're likely to pull this deal off
but the American people are awakening now and I think there's going to
be a payback period in the election."

The Congressman expressed his resignation at the passage of the Patriot
Act and how it again underscores Bush's unchecked powers

"They had a few token changes which mean nothing and under the present
system he (President Bush) just ignores what he doesn't like anyway."
Asked if the US was heading into a dictatorship, Paul responded,

"It's getting close to it, it's called usurpation of power and it's done
in many ways with Congress just going along because they're sound asleep
and this certainly is an attack on our Constitution and on our
freedoms."

'English Speaking' Sign Flap

(CBS4) DENVER

Arapahoe County is
threatening to fire (from his civil service job) a veteran Public Works
employee for promoting the fact that he is an "English speaking
American."
In his own private lawn service

( Just another case of every color, Race, Nationality is encouraged to

cbs4denver.com: CBS4 Investigates 'English Speaking' Sign Flap
Address:http://cbs4denver.com/local/local_story_061125200.html
Changed:10:48 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2006

"They claim it's offensive and I've been accused of discrimination and
harassment, believe it or not, because of this," said Mike Gray, a heavy
equipment operator with the Arapahoe County Road and Bridge Department
for 16 years.

The problems began last spring. Gray, 50, owns a lawn service
business on the side. He was routinely driving to work in his pickup
truck towing a trailer that he uses to carry lawn mowing equipment for
his business.
On the side of his trailer, the married father of two affixed a
sign that reads "Lawn Services Done With Pride!! By An English Speaking
American."
The sign also gives Gray's phone number and the lettering is over a
background of an American flag.
"There are a lot of people in the lawn service that are non-English
speaking," Gray said. "Customers and different people were telling me
that they have a hard time trying to communicate with them about the
work they want done on their yards. I just want to let people know they
at least can communicate with me when I do work on their property."
Gray also wore a hat to work that says "U.S. Border Patrol,"
which he says was a gift from his son.

Arapahoe County officials told Gray the sign and hat must go or else. In
a Nov. 10, 2005, letter, his supervisor Monty Sedlak wrote the
following:
"Some of your conduct ... is reprehensible and discriminatory to
our non-English speaking and/or Hispanic workforce. You are in violation
of ... guidelines which ensure a workplace free from harassment and
sensitive to the diversity of employees."
"You are required to permanently remove your cap from the
workplace. It is offensive and harassing. Your business sign, if on work
premises, must be completely covered at all times. This behavior is
inappropriate and any further incidents of this nature may result in
further disciplinary action up to and including termination of
employment."
Andrea Rasizer, spokesperson for Arapahoe County, declined to answer
questions, saying the matter was a "personnel issue."

Gray said he believes his First Amendment rights are at stake,
and he said he is "not about to surrender."
"I got a new supervisor," said Gray. "He's a politically correct,
bleeding heart liberal. I believe in what I'm doing. I got to stand up
for what I believe in and I don't think I'm doing a thing wrong. Of
course I don't want to lose my job, but I can't back down from something
I believe in. Like I say, they're just chipping away at our rights and
freedoms."
In response to the County's firing threat, Gray stopped wearing his
Border Patrol hat to work and partly covers his business sign at work so
that the American flag and the words "English speaking American" are the
only things still visible.
The County says that's not enough, but it's as far as Gray is willing to
go.
"Why would any American do such a thing as cover up the American flag
and something that says you're an American? Its beyond me that anyone
could expect me to do that like my employer is."
Gray has hired attorney David Lane, who plans to file an injunction to
allow the County worker to resume wearing his hat on the job and fully
display his sign.
"What is of concern to me is whether the government of Arapahoe County
is violating his Constitutional rights under the First Amendment," Lane
said. "When the government tries to put a gag in people's mouths because
they don't like the message that's being delivered, I'd do everything in
my power to stop that from happening."

There are dozens of high ranking zionists in the Bush administration
with dual U.S./Israeli citizenship papers. What makes Dov Zakheim
especially interesting are three things:
1. Before he resigned as Undersecretary of Defense and Comptroller of
the Pentagon; over one trillion dollars ( 1,000 X 1 billion)
mysteriously disappeared from the U.S. Treasury and no one knows
where it went. It's the main reason he did resign. (The major news
organizations have been ordered not to leak this info to the public.)

Naveed you posted the above link. The first thing it argues about is
a picture "which allegedly depicts a fuselage fragment said to be of
United Airlines Flight 175 resting atop the roof of WTC Building 5."

ARE YOU SERIOUS? You think anyone needed to fake evidence that Flight
175's wreckage was at the WTC site? You link to a site that thinks
Flight 175 didn't crash into the WTC? What are you doing? Are you for
real? This is something I am supposed to just play along with and
"take action" on?

maybe i should have specified that look at the squibs evidence and the testimony of the firefighters.

i don't fully support EVERYTHING but check out the pics. i cite whatreallyhappened.com sometimes but do i agree with everything he says? NO!

and you never answered my question whether you have broadband or not and bout me uploading files to you, well do you?

plus are you familiar with PNAC and thier "new pearl harbor"?

are you familiar with Operation NORTHWOODs to carry out fake terror against the american public in order to justify invading cuba back in the early 60s?

if the fuxxors that be had nothing to hide, why didn't they allow proper forensic analysis of the crime scene? why did they haul the steel away so damn quickly when the fire engineering magazine called the fema investigation a half-baked farce? more of the incompetence crap?

what about kevin ryan politely calling the NIST head guy (forgot name) your thermodynamic analysis is full of shit? and later on got fired for it?

and why haven't you answered my question regarding frank demartini's comment of the pencil through the misquito netting PRE 9/11? in regards to the structure of the WTC towers?

Subject: DO YOU WISH?

DO YOU WISH?

DO YOU WISH THAT YOU COULD TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN, GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?

My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed. Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.

This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hellholes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France.

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing problems we still have at home.
On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Attack us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth. Thirsting for a good country to terrorize? Try Cuba, North Korea, France, or maybe China.

Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York.

While we are at it, we will start moving the United Nations out of the United States. We do not need any more spies with diplomatic immunity. Dropping our membership in the United Nations will be next. H. R. 1146, to get out of the United Nations, is now on the "fast track" for passage.

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not opposing us for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tanks and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put them? Yes, we will use them for border security.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty and CAFTA - starting now. Ww will also drop all efforts to ratify FTAA.

We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care.

It is time for America to focus on the well being of its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin."

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. Lower taxes from abolishing foreign aid ought to take care of that.

To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thank you guys. We owe you and we won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.

God bless America. Thank you and good night.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.

WHOA, WHOA. This is supposed to be what we would wish for? I wish for
justice. I wish Bush and others get charged with war crimes for starting
a war of aggression against Iraq.

In your wish list scenario you let Bush and the other criminals off the
hook!! What Bush did was a war crime, in fact a crime the same as the
Nazis were hung for. The crime of aggression.

"The major and crucial point overlooked is the judgment of Nuremberg,
declaring that aggression is "the supreme international crime differing
only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the
accumulated evil of the whole." All of the "accumulated evil." Also
overlooked are the stern words of the US Chief Counsel Justice Jackson:
"If certain acts of violation of treaties are crimes, they are crimes
whether the United States does them or whether Germany does them, and we
are not prepared to lay down a rule of criminal conduct against others
which we would not be willing to have invoked against us... We must
never forget that the record on which we judge these defendants is the
record on which history will judge us tomorrow. To pass these defendants
a poisoned chalice is to put it to our own lips as well." Until at least
this is recognized, all other discussion is merely footnotes, and
shameful ones." - Q/A on the Iraq War

"By the principles of the Nuremberg Tribunal, which the US initiated and
carried out, it concluded that the supreme international crime is
invasion, aggression, and that supreme crime includes within it all the
evil that follows. So therefore the doubling of malnutrition rates, the
maybe 100,000 casualties, the grave war crimes in Fallujah, they're all
footnotes, they're footnotes to the supreme international crime.

And that crime is taken pretty seriously. [when others do it of course]
In Nuremberg they did not try soldiers, and they didn't try company
commanders, they tried the the people who were on trial and hanged
- were the top command. Like the German Foreign Minister was hanged.
Because of participation in the supreme international crime which
encompasses all the evil that follows. Do we hear anything about that?"
- Civilization versus Barbarism?
<http://www.chomsky.info/interviews/20041217.htm>

The war was illegal and that is according to our own Constitution
<http://www.representativepress.org/ViolatingInternationalLaw.html>
because the war violated the "law of the land." The U.S. signed the UN
Charter which means that the treaty is law of our land. For those that
actaully care about this country: the very foundation of which is the
U.S. Constitution. It is the core of what our country is supposed to be
about and it is so important that it is what that our solders swear to
"support and defend
<http://www.army.mil/CMH/faq/oaths.htm> " The oath we have them take
is "I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support
and defend the Constitution of the United States
<http://www.army.mil/CMH/faq/oaths.htm> "

And Congress does want to spend the money because the rich and powerful
interests they represent want public money spent because it goes to U.S.
corporations The special interests that pull the strings don't think of
it as spending money, rather it is for them literally receiving money.
That is an important point. Actually look at these wars and you see it
is a shake down of the American taxpayer. But these politicians don't
care since it is not their money being s spent and the interests they
represent are on the receiving end of the deal. The special intersts
should not profit. Investigantion should be carried out into who pushed
for the war and how they lied to the American people.

"The United States should not only get out quickly, it ought to be
compelled or shamed into paying huge sums to a free Iraq to compensate
for the enormous damage that resulted from its commission of the
"supreme crime" and murderous occupation." - Q/A on the Iraq War

SOCIAL STUDIES
In Arabic, 'Internet' Means 'Freedom'

Odd though it may sound, somewhere in Baghdad a man is working in secrecy to
edit new Arabic versions of _Liberalism_
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0865975868/nationaljournalc) , by the Austrian economist Ludwig von
Mises, and _In Defense of Global Capitalism_
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1930865473/nationaljournalc) , by the Swedish economist Johan Norberg. He
is doing this at some risk of kidnap, beating, and death, because he hopes
that a new Arabic-language Web site, called _LampofLiberty.org_
(http://lampofliberty.org/news/show/70.html) -- MisbahAlHurriyya.org in Arabic -- can
change the world by publishing liberal classics.
Odder still, he may be right.

Intellectual isolation is a widespread Arab phenomenon, not just an Iraqi
one. Some of the statistics are startling.

Interviewed by e-mail, he asks to be known by a pseudonym, H. Ali Kamil. A
Shiite from Iraq's south, he is an accomplished scholar, but he asks that no
other personal details be revealed. Two of his friends have been killed in
the postwar insurgency and chaos, one shot and the other "slaughtered." Others
of his acquaintance are in hiding, visiting their families in secret. He has
been threatened for working with an international agency.
Now he is collaborating not with foreign agencies but with foreign ideas. He
has made Arabic translations of all or parts of more than two dozen articles
and nine books and booklets. "None," he says, "were previously translated,
to my knowledge, for the simple reason that they are all on liberalism and
democracy, which unfortunately have little audience and advocators in the Middle
East, where almost all publishing houses and press outlets are governmental
-- i.e., anti-liberal."
Kamil's work is anonymous out of fear, not modesty. Translating Frederic
Bastiat's _The Law_
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1572460733/nationaljournalc) , he says, took 20 days of intense labor. "I am proud of that,
especially when I knew that the book has never been translated before. This is one
of the works my heart is aching for not having my name in its front page."
Asked how he began this work, he recounts meeting an American who was
lecturing in Baghdad on principles of constitutional government. The message struck
home. "Yes, you could say I am libertarian," Kamil says. "I believe in
liberty for all, equality and human rights, freedom and democracy, free-market
ethics, and I hate extremism in everything. I believe in life more than death as
being the way to happiness."
The American was Tom G. Palmer, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute in
Washington and a man who cares a lot about books. (So much so, that he always
walks around with a satchel full of them.) When the Soviet Union fell, he
worked on making key liberal texts available in Russian and the languages of the
former Soviet Bloc. How can democracy and markets thrive, after all, without
the owner's manual?
In 2004, Palmer traveled to Iraq for an education-ministry conference on
reforming the schools. Having expunged compulsory Baathist education, the Iraqis
were figuring out what came next. "They desperately wanted something
different from what they had," Palmer says. Like many Albanians and Romanians he met
after the Soviet Union collapsed, Iraqis pulled him aside to tell stories of
family members harassed or killed by the fallen regime. The strikingly
ubiquitous statues and images of Saddam Hussein testified to how thoroughly the
Baathist dictatorship had dominated intellectual life.
Intellectual isolation is a widespread Arab phenomenon, not just an Iraqi
one. Some of the statistics are startling. According to the United Nations'
2003 "_Arab Human Development Report_
(http://hdr.undp.org/reports/detail_reports.cfm?view=712) ," five times more books are translated annually into Greek,
a language spoken by just 11 million people, than into Arabic. "No more than
10,000 books were translated into Arabic over the entire past millennium,"
says the U.N., "equivalent to the number translated into Spanish each year."
Authors and publishers must cope with the whims of 22 Arab censors. "As a
result," writes a contributor to the report, "books do not move easily through
their natural markets." Newspapers are a fifth as common as in the non-Arab
developed world; computers, a fourth as common. "Most media institutions in Arab
countries remain state-owned," the report says.
No wonder the Arab world and Western-style modernity have collided with a
shock. They are virtually strangers, 300 years after the Enlightenment and 200
years after the Industrial Revolution. Much as other regions may be cursed
with disease or scarcity, in recent decades the Arab world has been singularly
cursed with bad ideas. First came Marxism and its offshoots; then the
fascistic nationalism of Nasserism and Baathism; now, radical Islamism. Diverse as
those ideologies are, they have in common authoritarianism and the
suppression of any true private sphere. Instead of withering as they have done in open
competition with liberalism, they flourished in the Arab world's relative
isolation.
Palmer's first thought was to launch a think tank in Iraq, but that fizzled
when the institute's prospective president bailed out at his wife's urging,
for fear of his life. Last April, Palmer returned to Iraq to give talks on
constitutional and free-market principles. At one such talk he met Kamil.
Returning to Washington, Palmer connected with other liberal Arabs and, with their
help, began commissioning translations: of Bastiat, Mises, Adam Smith, John
Stuart Mill, Voltaire, David Hume, F.A. Hayek, and such influential
contemporary writers as Mario Vargas Llosa and Hernando de Soto. Most of this stuff
has either been unavailable in Arabic or available spottily, intermittently,
and in poor translations.
In January, MisbahAlHurriyya.org made its Internet debut. Today it hosts
about 40 texts; Palmer aims for more like 400, including a shelf of books. (It
currently offers an abridged edition of Hayek's _Road to Serfdom_
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0226320618/nationaljournalc) and Bastiat's The
Law. The Norberg book is coming soon.) Sponsored by the Cato Institute, it
joins a small but growing assortment of Arabic-language blogs and Web sites
promulgating liberal ideas.
"The Internet is a historical opportunity for Arab liberalism," Pierre Akel,
the Lebanese host of one such site, _metransparent.com_
(http://metransparent.com/english.html) , said in a recent _interview _
(http://www.reason.com/links/links020906.shtml) with Reason magazine. "In the Arab world, much more
than in the West, we can genuinely talk of a blog revolution." The Internet
provides Arab liberals with the platform and anonymity that they need;
helpfully, Arabic-language blogware, developed by liberal bloggers, recently came
online for free downloading. During the recent controversy over a Danish
newspaper's publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, an Egyptian blog,
_EgyptianSandMonkey.blogspot.com_
(http://egyptiansandmonkey.blogspot.com/2006/02/boycott-egypt.html) , made a splash by pointing out that no one had
protested when the same cartoons had previously been published on the front page
of an Egyptian newspaper -- and by calling, sardonically, for a Muslim
boycott of Egypt. (The site boasts a "Buy Danish" sticker.)
Since the 1950s, the U.S. State Department (and the former U.S. Information
Agency, now folded into State) has steadily commissioned and published Arabic
translations of American books, including a sprinkling of political
classics, such as _The Federalist Papers_
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140444955/nationaljournalc) . Its translation programs are run by the embassies
in Cairo and Jordan. According to Alberto Fernandez, of the State
Department's Near Eastern Affairs Bureau, a third program, managed from Washington and
still fledgling, seeks to bring translated books to Iraq.
Those print editions, worthy though they are, are subject to the vagaries of
commercial book distribution, which is decidedly spotty in the region. The
U.N. report notes that in the Arab world -- a region of 284 million -- a book
that sells 5,000 copies qualifies as a best-seller.
The Internet, in contrast, makes possible worldwide, instant distribution,
at a nearly negligible cost. MisbahAlHurriyya.org relies heavily on volunteers
and donated Web services; its budget, says Palmer, is in the five figures.
Thanks to e-mail, conferring and passing manuscripts between Washington,
Baghdad, and Amman -- a logistical nightmare in the days of mail and fax -- is a
cinch. The site, entirely in Arabic, advertises on the popular Arabic Web
sites _Albawaba.com_ (http://albawaba.com/) and _Aljazeera.net_
(http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage) . The whole enterprise was impossible a decade ago.
Firmly establishing liberal ideas took centuries in the West, and may yet
take decades in the Arab world. Authoritarian and sectarian and tribalist
notions are easier to explain than liberal ones, and it is inherently harder to
build trust in mercurial markets and flowing democratic coalitions than in
charismatic leaders, visionary clerics, and esteemed elders. The liberal world's
intellectual underpinnings are as difficult to grasp as its cultural reach is
difficult to escape. Thus the disjunction within which Baathism, Islamism,
and Arab tribalism have festered.
Yet few who are genuinely intellectually curious can read J.S. Mill or Adam
Smith and come away entirely unchanged. The suffocating Arab duopoly of
state-controlled media and Islamist pulpits is cracking -- only a little bit so
far, but keep watching. In the Arab world, the Enlightenment is going online.
