Another Day in the Empire <http://kurtnimmo.com >
Iranian Directorate: the Office of Special Plans Refurbished
<http://kurtnimmo.com/?p=414> By Administrator on Uncategorized

"How do we know that the CIA was behind the coup that
overthrew Hugo Chavez? Same way we know that the sun will rise
tomorrow morning," mused historian William Blum
< http://www.counterpunch.org/blum0414.html> , an author
supposedly read by the dead Osama bin Laden. In the same way, how
do we know the neocons are behind the impending shock and awe
campaign against Iran? Go to the window and see if the sun came
up this morning.

In an excellent article penned by Larisa Alexandrovna
< http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Pentagon_confirms_Iranian_directorate_as_intelligence_0615.html> of Raw Story, we learn that
the "universal fascist,"
< http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2005/site_packages/ledeen/3243ledeen-cheney_intro.html> backer of permanent revolution, and
admirer of Gabriele D'Annunzio (the Duce of Fiume of
Italian fascism), Michael Ledeen recently trekked to Rome to meet
up with Iran-Contra criminal Manucher Ghorbanifar.

"Current military and former intelligence officials remain
concerned about a US-led strike on Iran, despite the recent
appearance of diplomacy on the part of the US State Department
and the offer of an incentives package to Iran," writes
Alexandrovna. "Officials point to new developments, such
as a recent meeting in Rome between an Iranian arms dealer and
controversial neoconservative Michael Ledeen and the March
creation of the Iranian directorate inside the Pentagon, as
examples of recent events similar to the lead up with war in
Iraq."

In short, the Pentagon's Iranian directorate is a
refashioned Office of Special Plans, the neocon shop designed to
crank out absurd lies and fabrications to build flimsy pretexts
prior to the invasion of Iraq. Former CIA officer Larry C.
Johnson < http://www.sundayherald.com/34491> characterized the
OSP as "dangerous for US national security and a threat to
world peace. [The OSP] lied and manipulated intelligence to
further its agenda of removing Saddam. It's a group of
ideologues with pre-determined notions of truth and reality. They
take bits of intelligence to support their agenda and ignore
anything contrary. They should be eliminated."

Alexandrovna notes officials "also add that an as-yet
uncompleted 'Phase II' investigation into pre-war
Iraq intelligence suggests the same problems may recur when
addressing Iran. They note that the Pentagon's Iranian
directorate mirrors the so-called Office of Special Plans, which
played a major role in feeding intelligence to the President that
bolstered a case for war."

Last month, Laura Rozen, writing for the Los Angeles Times,
explained that the Iranian directorate, while centered in the
Pentagon, will be managed by the State Department, never mind
that the neocon Condi Rice sits atop the organizational chart at
the latter. "The administration's efforts are
taking shape on the second floor of the State Department, where a
new Office of Iranian Affairs has been charged with leading the
push to back Iranian dissidents more aggressively, boost support
to democracy broadcasters and strengthen ties with exiles….
The State Department's new Iranian Affairs office is
headed by David Denehy, a longtime democracy specialist at the
International Republican Institute, who will work under Assistant
Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Elizabeth Cheney,
daughter of the vice president."

Patricia Kushlis
<http://whirledview.typepad.com/whirledview/2006/05/the_us_and_iran.html> , posting on the WhirledView blog, describes David
Denehy as one stalk in a crop of "twenties-something
Pentagon-style whiz kids" who "created far more
havoc than they were worth in Iraq." No doubt this
"havoc"—suicide bombings, destroyed civilian
infrastucture, sectarian violence—will be replicated in
Iran if the neocons have their way.

As for the International Republican Institute, it is a division
of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the U.S. Agency
for International Development (USAID). "The IRI is the
indirect product of a democratic globalism effort spearheaded in
the late 1970s by neoconservatives and their allies in the
AFL-CIO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and in the two main U.S.
political parties," explains Right Web
< http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/1481> . "The
principals of IRI span the center right-far right spectrum of the
internationalists in the Republican Party. Most of its staff and
board have links to right-wing think tanks, foundations, and
policy institutes, while many also represent major financial,
oil, and defense corporations." In short, Mr. Denehy is a
neolib closely associated with the neocon faction—and thus
the Iranian directorate will produce wholly predictable results.

"Lt. Col. Barry E. Venable, a spokesman for the Pentagon,
confirmed the creation of the directorate for Iran in both a
phone conversation and an email message," Larisa
Alexandrovna continues. "As the State Department stated in
early March (Daily Press Brief, Mar. 3), the U.S. Government is
organizing itself better to address what Secretary Rice called
'one of the great challenges for the United States, a
strategic challenge for the United States and for those who
desire peace and freedom,'" Venable wrote.

Of course, in neocon doublespeak, "peace" is war
(or shock and awe) and "freedom" is engineered
social and cultural disintegration designed to foment
"civil war," that is to say sectarian strife
ultimately resulting in the balkanization of Iran along ethnic
and religious lines, a process well under way currently in Iraq.

Tellingly, "Venable also confirmed that the new
directorate falls under the policy side—more
specifically—under the new number three at the Pentagon,
Eric Edelman. Edelman, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy,
holds the same position that Douglas Feith held when he ran OSP
at the Pentagon in the lead-up to the Iraq war."

Although Edelman appears not to be a raving Zionist like his
predecessor Feith, he is most assuredly a dyed-in-the-wool
neocon. He has worked closely with Paul Wolfowitz, Zalmay
Khalilzad, and the indicted I. Lewis Libby.

"As an assistant to Cheney, he was part of the foreign
policy network that hurriedly established the
'intelligence' rationales [i.e., lies] for the U.S.
invasion of Iraq. Edelman, who is close to such leading neocons
as Michael Ledeen and Richard Perle, worked closely in the vice
president's office with Scooter Libby in establishing a
policy network of hawks and neocons that was based at the
Pentagon and Cheney's office but extended through key
figures into State, the various intelligence agencies, and the
National Security Council," notes Right Web
< http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/1143> . As such,
Edelman's influence on the new cherry-picking operation
for Iran should be entirely predictable.

Finally, Alexandrovna suggest that since the Pentagon was allowed
to slide on its calculated usage of lies and dredging up scary
fictional campfire stories about Iraq, the same is likely to
happen in regard to the Iran Shock and Awe Directorate.
"The lack of a comprehensive report as to how the Pentagon
conducted itself prior to the Iraq war, as well as afterward,
raises suspicions among some still in uniform about the
Pentagon's Iran Directorate's role going forward.
Many see parallels between what is already known about the Office
of Special Plans and what appears to be escalating activity
surrounding Iran."

Indeed. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the American people,
a mostly somnolent mass counted upon not to know the difference
between the Office of Special Plans and Office Max, will likely
not scream bloody murder when the cruise missiles and
"mini-nuke" bunker-busters begin raining down on
Iran. Of course, there will be the now obligatory anti-war
marches worldwide, but these will be igonred, as the corporate
media is onboard with the neocons and their ongoing war crimes
and predation.

The Huffington Post Raw Feed Peter Laarman:
The Flat, Flat World of David Brooks's Brain
< http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-laarman/the-flat-flat-world-of-d_b_23081.html> By Peter Laarman on Iraq

Oh, to be an Olympian with an unlimited capacity to re-draw the
political landscape according to one's whimsies! Few have been
vouchsafed such privilege, so those who do had better ground
their thought experiments on something more than a stale
re-shuffling of the current options.

David Brooks fails this test miserably in his "Changing
Bedfellows" column
<http://select.nytimes.com/2006/06/15/opinion/15brooks.html > in
today's New York Times. Habits of silky oversimplification
appear to be migrating from Tom Friedman's cortex over to the
gray matter of the normally more sober Brooks.

Brooks writes that a more coherent ordering of political
arrangements would pit a "populist nationalist" faction against a
"progressive globalist" party. The "populist nationalists" would
promote government solutions to the looming health care and
retirement crises facing American workers; they would be
protectionist in trade policy and strongly supportive of holding
back the tide of illegal immigration. They would bring a swift
end to the waste of blood and treasure that is Iraq. They would
stand for family values and demand stern action against a torrent
of Internet porn. Their paladins would be people like Kevin
Phillips, Lou Dobbs, and James Dobson.

On the other side in this new dispensation, "progressive
globalists" would continue to push trade liberalization as the
great beneficent engine of growth and prosperity; they would
reiterate still more strongly the mantra that education and
training can open the benefits of trade to everyone; they would
continue to privatize health care and retirement and pare back
public entitlements in these areas; and they would promote an
ultra-muscular foreign and military policy out of their
conviction that, in the end, only the American military can
guarantee open trade and beat down jihadism in all its forms. The
globalist champions would include figures like John McCain,
Hillary Clinton, Mark Warner, and Rudy Giuliani.

Brooks says "left" and "right" no longer matter as much as his
new shorthand of "closed" vs. "open": the nationalists vs. the
globalists.

What's left out in this Brooksian re-alignment is, well, just
about everything that keeps us from shooting ourselves before
breakfast. His airless bifurcation leaves us yet again with an
evil of two lessers, a tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum of two narrow
and dangerous mindsets. There's no room in his scheme for the
true visionaries of our time, the Wendell Berrys and Medea
Benjamins and Jonathan Schells and Cornel Wests and David Kortens
and many, many others who see a future in which there's no
zero-sum tradeoff between "green" prosperity at home and a
multi-polar, demilitarized world outside our borders. Brooks
seems unable to imagine "elites" who have the moral sense to
reject the cruel core premises of neoliberal economics: elites
who accept and even welcome globalization, but not this
globalization that inflicts so much misery--that tells two
million Mexican peasants (for example) that their maize no longer
meets the market test and they must therefore quit the land and
re-invent themselves.

Brooks spends too much time inside the Beltway. He needs a
vacation. I recommend Oaxaca.
If all that's left in America is going to be the politics of Lou
Dobbs versus the politics of Hillary Clinton, we'll all be
needing a vacation soon. A very, very long one.

The Israel Lobby: Bunkum From Benador

Posted by: "Sean McBride" smcbride2@yahoo.com smcbride2

<http://www.thenation.com/docprint.mhtml?i=20060703&s=cohleresses >

Excerpt:

The neoconservative campaign to equate Iran with Nazi Germany received a setback in May. Bloggers and a few journalists quickly exposed as wholly concocted a story about a new law that would require Iranian Jews to wear yellow insignia. Within days the National Post of Canada--founded by disgraced neocon media mogul Conrad Black and now owned by the no less hawkish Asper family--was forced to apologize publicly for its "scoop." But by then the New York Post, Rush Limbaugh, the Drudge Report, right-wing blogs and some wire services had picked up the claim, bringing the phony news to millions.

Few ran retractions. And despite the debunking, the story's powerful visual imagery was likely lasting for casual readers. Over headlines blaring Iran, some papers ran photos of Jews from the Nazi era wearing the yellow stars that separated them from their fellow citizens before their slaughter.

Nevertheless, the debunking exposed the moving parts of a media machine intent on priming the public for war with Iran--as it did earlier with stories about Iraq's nonexistent WMD. Ubiquitous in this campaign, as it was with Iraq, is the PR firm Benador Associates. Its president, Eleana Benador, told me it was her agency that placed the article with the National Post. Its stable of writers and activists, a Who's Who of the neocon movement, includes Richard Perle, Michael Ledeen, Frank Gaffney, Charles Krauthammer, Victor Davis Hanson and Iranian exile journalist Amir Taheri--the author of the bogus piece. Even among a crowd notable for wrongheaded analyses, Taheri stands out, with a rap sheet that leaves one amazed that he continues to be published. It is here that the role of Benador is key; the firm gives Taheri a political stamp of approval that provides entree to hawkish media venues, where journalistic criteria are secondary.

The Israel Lobby: Iran Yellow Star Hoax

<http://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/2006/06/16/aipac-and-the-neo-cons-ginning-up-for-war-against-iran/ >

Excerpt:

I just read a follow up by Larry Cohler-Esses in The Nation to his Jewish Week story about the bogus report that Iran planned to force Jews to wear a Nazi-like yellow stripe on their clothing. So many able progressive bloggers have covered this story so I don't want to go over ground that's already been plowed. But there are some interesting Jewish angles to this story that haven't been fully amplified yet.

The Jewish star fraud was perpetrated by a neocon darling, Iranian-born Amir Taheri. The latter is represented by another neocon PR outfit, Benador Associates, which placed the article in the Canadian National Post, a paper owned by the Asper family. The Aspers are supporters of Israeli hardline politics and so it's no wonder they ran the story.

Benador Associates seems to represent just about anyone who's anyone in the neo-con movement. Their "member list" reads like a Who's Who of Bush Administration/Aipac-friendly insiders. Just a few of the pertinent names prominent in hardline pro-Israel politics: David Gelertner, Charles Jacobs (DAVID Project), Charles Krauthammer, Michael Ledeen, Martin Kramer, Richard Pipes, Richard Perle, A.M. Rosenthal, Yossi Olmert, Natan Sharansky, Dennis Prager. Eleana Benador, the company's founder, is a former director of Daniel Pipes hard-right Middle East Forum.

The Israel Lobby: Benador Associates

Resources for connecting the dots on the allegedly non-existent Israel lobby.

The posting of similar resources for other lobbies, including the oil lobby, in a format suitable for automated data mining and social network analysis, would be welcome.

NML (Notes Markup Language) is a semantic markup language, in which vectors, defined with the right chevron or greater-than character, are one type of propositional statement. Vectors identify significant links among objects, and lines of force or chains of influence in any field of activity, social or otherwise. Semantic markup, in combination with grid supercomputing, will probably prove to be the most powerful mind amplification tool ever invented by the human race and herald the development of a global superintelligence.

Some very smart people have figured out that nearly the entire realm of human knowledge in all fields can be represented as a single plain text list. You'll have to dig to discover what that is all about. Let me just say that The List is a radically more powerful form of reference work than has ever existed -- well beyond dictionaries, encyclopedias, wikis and databases.

Skipping Towards Armageddon: The Politics and Propaganda of the Left Behind Novels and the LaHaye Empire (Paperback)
by Michael Standaert
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
As BuzzFlash readers know, we have been focusing on many premiums that cover the right wing religious movement aimed at turning America into a theocracy. Many of the leaders of this Christian jihad are in powerful positions in the Bush administration, and in addition to corporate profiteers, these are the people best known as Bush's "base."
One of the most curious creatures with a front row seat in the "Rapture" movement is the unctuously creepy Tim LaHaye. LaHaye comes across as a mix breed of an undertaker and a vampire.
But LaHaye, unknown to many Americans who are not Christian religious extremists, has, among other things, amassed a fortune selling millions of apocalyptical books that are part of his "Left Behind" series.
As the publisher of "Skipping Towards Armageddon" observes about LaHaye's literary work: "Below the surface there is a more dangerous, ominous, and cynically manipulated message bent more on enforcing a political ideology in the United States and around the world than any type of religious belief. In reality, this political-Evangelicalism could be compared to what some call the takeover of the Islamic faith with a form of virulent political-Islam. The core objectives of each are to control minds, markets, and resources. Where one uses barbarous terrorist tactics, spiteful propaganda, and violence to achieve its goals, the other uses flashy and pervasive television, radio, savvy publishing and technological propaganda as means to deliver its message."

More from the Publisher of "Skipping Towards Armageddon"
The most effective message yet found by the hijackers of mainstream religion is Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series of apocalyptic Christian novels. This wide-ranging study examines the books and the empire behind them. Author Michael Standaert contextualizes the Left Behind phenomenon by probing millennial thinking across cultures, from pre-Christian times to the present, and tracing the evolution of militant evangelism in the U.S., uncovering the links between fundamentalist religious figures and mainstream right-wing politicians through organizations like the Moral Majority. Skipping Toward Armageddon rips the lid off the Left Behind books? ideological underpinnings, showing how LaHaye uses them to advance the foreign and domestic policy goals Religious Right, from fomenting Middle East violence to promoting homophobia and xenophobia. The book is a timely cautionary tale, revealing that these best-selling books are not simply harmless thrillers written from an evangelical
Christian perspective but a tool in a fanatical group's agenda.

Some Thoughts on Anti-Semitism

Posted by: "Sean McBride" smcbride2@yahoo.com smcbride2

Fri Jun 16, 2006 6:21 pm (PST)

Dick,

I don't want to pick on you or gang up on you, but my honest impression is that you hold anti-Semitic beliefs and often post hardcore anti-Semitic materials.

You need to notice two things:

1. Nearly all ethnic and religious groups I can think of have engaged in rotten and destructive behavior at times, including, and perhaps especially, Christian Europeans, a group of which I account myself a member by dint of biological and cultural background.

2. Jewish civilization has produced an enormous number of geniuses and cultural gifts for the human race, in the arts and sciences and just about every field one can think of. (Maybe they're not so good at basketball or drinking themselves under the table in an Irish pub. Even there I would be cautious about jumping to conclusions.)

When I encounter a Razl Dazl, I don't get angry at the Jews -- I get angry at Razl Dazl. I know that he represents probably less than 2% of Jews worldwide -- probably even less.

When Jews do get caught in spectacular criminal schemes, it is not because their nature is more criminal than that of WASPs, Celts, Poles or whatever. It is usually because they are smarter and more enterprising than their competitors in this area of human activity, and therefore more likely to attain truly amazing heights of criminal achievement. But Jews also attain truly amazing heights of achievement in everything they apply themselves to.

This is evil? I was under the impression that enterprise, intelligence and imagination were admirable human virtues.

Keep in mind that I say this as someone who believes that Zionism was probably a tremendous mistake and will end badly, who hasn't been bashful about expressing these views, and who has taken a great deal of heat for them. I am one who will always give someone who has been charged with anti-Semitism the benefit of the doubt. But there really are real anti-Semites in the world, and anti-Semitism, like all other forms of ignorant bigotry, is a great evil, and contrary to best principles of the Enlightenment, the ideology in this world which I most favor.

Thomas Jefferson would probably have disliked Zionists, but he would have loved the Jews overall as a civilization and culture. The best values of Jewish civilization and Enlightenment civilization converge on many important points -- love of learning and scholarship, love of reason, love of critical intelligence, love of tolerance and a whole raft of related good things.

Dick Eastman <olfriend@nwinfo.net> wrote:
Razl Dazl kept repeating over and over that "flaccid DICK is a Nazi" and a "racist," a "bigot" etc. etc. agains and again in each post and post after post.

Razl Dazl knew what he was doing -- and his low opinion of the gentile mind has certainly been vindicated by the discussants on this list who, in time, came to Razl's way of thinking.

I'm ashamed of you all.

On Chip Berlet

Posted by: "Sean McBride" smcbride2@yahoo.com smcbride2

Fri Jun 16, 2006 6:50 pm (PST)

Millegan continues to hold on to his delusional belief that I am Chip Berlet. What's sad about this nuttiness is that it undercuts his credibility on anything else he cares to assert about the world.

I am not Chip Berlet. I have never met or communicated with Chip Berlet. I have long disliked most of the writings by him I have read, but I have lately been impressed by his (and Andrew Sullivan's) critiques of Christian fundamentalism.

There has been $10,000 sitting on the table for Millegan to collect at any time for many months now -- tomorrow if he wants. All he has had to do is make the bet that I am Berlet, and then permit a reputable third party, agreed upon by him, to ascertain the outcome of the bet. Millegan obviously doesn't believe his own charge on this matter because he has never tried to collect the easy $10,000. (I could easily find an investor to up the bet to $1 million or more, because it is a sure thing. The sky is the limit.)

Millegan's debating and discussion skills are not much better than Razl Dazl's. Thinking are writing are not his strong points. He does a good job, however, in defining a framework for interesting inquiries into conspiracy politics and conspiracy research. For that he deserves credit. At one time he managed to pull together some of the most interesting minds in conspiracy research into a single discussion group -- quite an achievement.

Guardian investigation undermines military claim that Israeli
shells could not have been responsible for death of girl's family

Heartrending pictures of 10-year-old Huda Ghalia running wildly
along a Gaza beach crying "father, father, father" and then
falling weeping beside his body turned the distraught girl into
an instant icon of the Palestinian struggle even before she fully
grasped that much of her family was dead.
But the images of the young girl who lost her father, step-mother
and five of her siblings as picnicking families fled a barrage of
Israeli shells a week ago have become their own battleground.

Who and what killed the Ghalia family, and badly maimed a score
of other people, has been the subject of an increasingly bitter
struggle for truth all week amid accusations that a military
investigation clearing the army was a cover-up, that Hamas was
really responsible and even that the pictures of Huda's grief
were all an act.

However, a Guardian investigation into the sequence of events
raises new and so far unanswered questions about the Israeli
military probe that cleared the army of responsibility. Evidence
from hospital records, doctors' testimony and witness accounts
challenges the military's central assertion that it had stopped
shelling by the time seven members of the Ghalia family were
killed.

In addition, fresh evidence from the US group Human Rights Watch,
which offered the first forensic questioning of the army's
account, casts doubt on another key claim - that shrapnel taken
from the wounded was not from the kind of artillery used to shell
Gaza.

The pictures of Huda's traumatic hunt for her father garnered
instant sympathy around the world and focused unwelcome attention
for Israel on its tactic of firing thousands of shells into Gaza
over recent weeks, killing more than 20 civilians, to deter
Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli towns.

The Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, initially apologised for
the killings but the military swiftly realised it was confronting
another PR disaster to rival that of the killing of Mohammed
al-Dura, the 12-year-old boy who died in his father's arms amid a
barrage of gunfire six years ago and became the first iconic
victim of the intifada.

Conflicting accounts

The army quickly convened a committee to investigate the deaths
on the beach and almost as swiftly absolved itself of
responsibility.

The committee acknowledged the army fired six shells on and
around Beit Lahia beach from artillery inside Israel. But it said
that by coincidence a separate explosion - probably a mine
planted by Hamas or a buried old shell Ă³ occurred in the same
area at about the same time, killing the family.

The army admitted that one of the six shells was unaccounted for
but said it was "impossible", based on location and timings, for
the sixth shell to have done the killing. The investigation also
concluded that shrapnel taken from some of the wounded was not
from artillery used that day.

The military declared its version of events definitive and an end
to the matter. Others went further and saw a Palestinian
conspiracy. An American pro-Israel pressure group, Camera, which
seeks to influence media coverage, went so far as to suggest that
the film of Huda Ghalia's trauma was faked: "Were the bodies
moved, was the girl asked to re-enact her discovery for the
camera, was the video staged?"

But the army's account quickly came in for criticism, led by a
former Pentagon battlefield analyst, Marc Garlasco, investigating
the deaths for Human Rights Watch.

"You have the crater size, the shrapnel, the types of injuries,
their location on the bodies. That all points to a shell dropping
from the sky, not explosives under the sand," he said. "I've been
to hospital and seen the injuries. The doctors say they are
primarily to the head and torso. That is consistent with a shell
exploding above the ground, not a mine under it."

Mr Garlasco produced shrapnel from the site apparently marked as
a 155mm shell used by the army that day.

Timing a key issue

The key part of the military's defence hinged on timings. It says
it fired the six shells toward the beach between 4.30pm and
4.48pm, and that the artillery barrage stopped nine minutes
before the explosion that killed the Ghalia family.

The military concluded that the deadly explosion occurred between
4.57pm and 5.10pm based on surveillance of the beach by a drone
that shows people relaxing until just before 5pm and the arrival
of the first ambulance at 5.15pm.

Major General Meir Kalifi, who headed the army's investigation
committee, said the nine-minute gap is too wide for Israel to
have been responsible for the deaths. "I can without doubt say
that no means used by the Israeli defence force during this time
period caused the incident," he said.

But hospital admissions records, testimony from doctors and
ambulance men and eyewitness accounts suggest that the military
has got the timing of the explosion wrong, and that it occurred
while the army was still shelling the beach.

Palestinian officials also question the timing of video showing
people relaxing on the beach undisturbed just before 5pm if the
army, by its own admission, was dropping shells close by in the
previous half an hour.

Several of those who survived the explosion say it came shortly
after two or three other blasts consistent with a pattern of
shells falling on the beach.

Among the survivors was Hani Asania. When the shelling began, he
grabbed his daughters - Nagham, 4, and Dima, 7 - and moved toward
his car on the edge of the beach. The Ghalia family was gathered
on the sand nearby awaiting a taxi.

"There was an explosion, maybe 500 metres away. Then there was a
second, much closer, about two minutes later. People were running
from the beach. I carried my girls and put them in the car but I
forgot my mobile phone and I ran back to get it," said Mr Asania.

"Maybe two minutes later there was a third shell. I could feel
the pressure of the blast on my face it was so strong. I saw
pieces of people. I looked at my car and my girls were
screaming."

This sequence is backed by others including Huda's brother,
Eyham, 20.

Annan Ghalia, Huda's uncle, called an ambulance.

"We were sitting on the sand waiting for the taxis, the men on
one side and the women on the other. The shell landed closer to
the girls," he said. "I was screaming for people to help us. No
one was coming. After about two minutes I called the ambulance on
my mobile phone."

The first ambulance took children to the Kamal Odwan hospital.
Its registration book records that five children wounded in the
blast were admitted at 5.05pm. The book contains entries before
and after the casualties from the beach, all of whom are named,
and shows no sign of tampering.

The hospital's computer records a blood test taken from a victim
at 5.12pm. Human Rights Watch said altering the records would
require re-setting the computer's clock.

The distance from the beach to the hospital is 6km. Even at
speed, the drive through Beit Lahia's crowded back streets and
rough roads would not take less than five minutes and would be
slower with badly wounded patients on board.

Dr Bassam al-Masri, who treated the first wounded at Kamal Odwan,
said allowing for a round trip of at least 10 minutes and time to
load them, the ambulance would have left the hospital no later
than 4.50pm - just two minutes after the Israelis say they
stopped shelling.

Factoring in additional time for emergency calls and the
ambulances to be dispatched, the timings undermine the military's
claim that the killer explosion occurred after the shelling
stopped.

A second Beit Lahia hospital, the Alwada, also received a call
for ambulances. Doctors say records were completed after treating
the patients so they have no written account of timings.

But the first ambulance man to leave the hospital, and a doctor
summoned to work, say they have a clear recollection of the time.
The ambulance driver, Khaled Abu Sada, said he received a call
from the emergency control room between 4.45 and 4.50pm.

"I went to look for a nurse to come with me but he couldn't
because there had been a shooting in a family feud and he was
treating people," he said. "I left the hospital at 4.50pm and was
at the beach by 5pm."

The Alwada's anaesthetist, Dr Ahmed Mouhana, was woken by a call
from a fellow doctor calling him to the hospital.

"I looked at the time. That's what you do when someone wakes you
up. It was 4.55pm. Dr Nasser couldn't tell me what was going on
so I called Abu Jihad [Mr Abu Sada] and asked him. He said he
didn't know but I should get to the hospital quickly as it
sounded bad," he said.

Mr Abu Sada remembers receiving the call while driving to the
beach. Dr Mouhana left for the hospital immediately.

"It only takes 10 minutes from my house so I was there by 5.10pm
or 5.15pm at the latest. I went to reception and they had already
done triage on the children," he said.

If the hospital records and medical professionals are right, then
the emergency call from the beach could not have come in much
later than 4.45pm, still during the Israeli shelling.

From the number of shells counted beforehand by the survivors, Mr
Garlasco, the former Pentagon analyst, believes the killer shell
was one the army records as being fired at 4.34pm.

A military spokesman, Captain Jacob Dalal, said the army stood by
its interpretation of timings.

Military investigators said shrapnel taken from wounded
Palestinians treated in Israeli hospitals was not from 155mm
shells fired that day.

"We know it's not artillery," said Capt Dalal. "We donĂt know
what it is. It could be a shell of another sort or some other
device."

The military has suggested that the explosion was rigged by Hamas
against possible army landings but Palestinian officials say that
would only be an effective strategy if there were a series of
mines or Hamas knew exactly where the Israelis would land.

Mr Garlasco said the metal taken from the victims may be detritus
thrown up by the explosion or shards from cars torn apart by
shrapnel. He said shrapnel collected at the site of the explosion
by Human Rights Watch and the Palestinian police was fresh and
from artillery shells.

The former Pentagon analyst said that after examining a
blood-encrusted piece of shrapnel given to him by the father of a
19-year-old man wounded in the beach explosion, he determined it
was a piece of fuse from an artillery shell.

"The likelihood that the Ghalia family was killed by an explosive
other than one of the shells fired by the Israeli army is
remote," he said.

Capt Dalal defended the army's investigation.

"We're not trying to cover-up anything. We didn't do the
investigation to exonerate ourselves. If it was our fire, we'll
say it," he said.

Gary Buell's Covert History
< http://www.coverthistory.blogspot.com/> is asking some sensible
questions about the death of Zarqawi:One wonders why the decision
was made not to try to take Zarqawi alive. Apparently U.S.
military forces had him surrounded. Surely Zarqawi as a
humiliated captive would have been preferable to Zaraqawi as a
martyr. Also he would obviously have been a high-value subject
for interrogation.Buell quotes Iraqi commentator Dhafer
Al-Ani:"Who financed his activities and secured the money, the
weapons and the recruits; who provided him with protection and
what role did those forces that are said to have penetrated his
ranks play in pushing him to carry out the atrocities he did or
to undermine the Iraqi nationalist resistance?"...

"Perhaps the greatest mystery about Zarqawi was the fact that the
bulk of his victims were Iraqis, not Americans... None of these
questions are likely to be investigated by the Americans nor the
Iraqi government. It is such a strange coincidence that his
agenda to divide Iraq has been similar to that of the invaders."
