Appeal against electing the occupied Iraq to the Human Rights Council
Monitoring Network of Human Rights in Iraq, BRussells Tribunal
As representatives of Iraqi civil society and Human Rights defenders we are deeply concerned over the attempt by the Iraqi regime to be elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council at the UN General Assembly on May 9, 2006 which could do great harm to the credibility of the United Nations. We wish to see an Iraq free from occupation play an important role in the U! nited Nations. The Iraqi state became a founder member of the United Nations as an independent state and not as an occupied country with nearly 200,000 foreign soldiers on its soil and a never ending occupation war. The current Iraqi regime is part of the occupation...

Do Palestinians have to convert to Judaism to get Justice?
Mike Whitney
The United States and Israel have finally agreed on a plan to resolve the decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict. Israel will continue lobbing missiles into civilian areas of Gaza and the West Bank while the US cuts off food and other vital aid to the territories. That way they can maximize the human suffering while preparing the people for a violent death. This is not what Palestinians bargained for when they accepted the western-model of ! democracy. The Road Map has become a cul de sac of aggression, subjugation and outright murder. I wonder how many Palestinians would have stayed home if they knew how they’d be treated for voting for the party of their choice?...

Last Question Is Obstruction for Fitzgerald, Rove
Jason Leopold
Hundreds of pages of emails and memos "discovered" by the White House in February and turned over to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald show that Karl Rove played a much larger role in the Valerie Plame Wilson leak case than he had previously disclosed to a grand jury and FBI investigators. In February, TruthOut was the first to report the existence of the 250 pages of emails from Vice President Dick Cheney's office and the Office of the President! that were written in mid-2003. Some of the emails and memos were written by Rove, and are part of a growing body of evidence suggesting he lied to the grand jury and the FBI and may have obstructed justice during the course of the investigation...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday 7 May 2006.
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.
...In a dispatch posted at 3:20pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a official with the Forensic Medicine Department in Baghdad announced that the number of bodies that had been found in the previous 48 hours apparent victims of sectarian murders was 103. All were Sunni Iraqis killed by pro-American Shi'i sectarian militias and dumped ! in public squares, garbage dumps, and sewers. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the official, in an exclusive statement, said that the bodies were found in the Baghdad districts of ath-Thawrah, ash-Shu'lah, the neighborhoods of Ur, ash-Sha'b, at-Tubji, al-Baladiyat, and al-Bayya', and also in the cities of as-Samawah, al-Hilah, an-Nasiriyah, Abu Dushayr, and Hur Rajab. All the bodies suffered various forms of torture before being killed. The medical source told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that six religious scholars, five medical doctors, four women, and a large number of particularly devout Sunnis arrested after coming out of mosques were among the dead and he emphasized that all had been tortured...

America's Geopolitical Nightmare and Eurasian Strategic Energy Arrangements
F. William Engdahl, Globalresearch.ca
By drawing attention to Iraq and the obvious role oil plays in US policy today, the Bush-Cheney administration has done just that: They have drawn the world’s energy-deficit powers’ attention firmly to the strategic battle over energy and especially oil. This is already having consequences for the global economy in terms of $75 a barrel crude oil price levels. Now it is taking on the dimension of what! one former US Defense Secretary rightly calls a 'geopolitical nightmare’ for the United States...

Congress Critters Clueless about Hayden
Kurt Nimmo
It would not be surprising if Porter Goss, the on-the-out CIA bossman, is involved with prostitutes, poker, and the disreputable Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, Brent Wilkes, and Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a situation noted by the Times Online. Wilkes is a merchant of death contractor (also known politely inside the Beltway as a defense industry contractor) and Cunningham a disgraced Republican Congress critter with a fondness for call girls and limos. More likely, however, is! the possibility Goss is not the sort of team player preferred by the Straussian neocons...

GI Special 4E7 Hungry Marines Asking Iraqis For Food - May 7, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
As if any further argumentation were needed, this merely underlines the great truth of this war. There is no enemy in Iraq. There never was any enemy in Iraq. The common enemies of the U.S. troops and the Iraqis are to be found in Washington DC, running their Imperial government for their own personal private profit. "Traitors" is too mild a term to describe them. At a certain point, rhetoric becomes exhausted, and only bright, wh! ite rage remains. A government that would do this, on top all the greed, lies, and stupidity that have characterized this war, has long outlived its usefulness, and has become a mere collection of incompetent cancerous predators...

Basra - the superior British occupiers again
Lenin's Tomb
Basra is now described as calm after yesterday's clashes with Mahdi Army supporters. The fighting broke out after a British helicopter crashed. It drew out a huge crowd of people who, hearing that it had been downed by a rocket, yelled "Victory to the Mahdi Army!" Then, fighting. I say that, but it is not clear that 'fighting' is the appropriate word, positing as it does a false equivalence between rock-throwing anti-occupation protesters and gun-wielding ! occupiers...

Al-Sadr tries to light the fuse again
Swopa, Needlenose
...There's the real importance of yesterday's bloodshed -- a reminder that Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani and the rest of the marjaiyah aren't the only ones calling the shots. Just as he did two years ago, Moqtada has demonstrated his ability to hijack the anti-American feelings being encouraged by the senior Shiite leaders -- where they seek to stockpile resentment for the right moment, keeping their proverbial powder dry, al-Sadr says, "Nahh, let's go ahead a! nd start this party now". Why? Because every time he jumps the gun this way, he comes out of the resulting strife with more clout...

British tactics reviewed as Basra erupts
Richard Norton-Taylor and Muhammad Alubedy
...Basra residents said the jubilation at British misfortune stems from the city's descent into misery - and warned that such confrontation was likely to recur. "The miserable situation in Basra and the south definitely had a role in the buildup of events," said Abu Ali, a Basra resident. "Electricity is absent for most of the day and gasoline is very expensive. Ordinary people can never get a job at the state security forces beca! use it is entirely controlled by the militias. "People think that those who used to live abroad came and controlled everything while the common citizens still cannot get basic life needs"...

DAILY WAR NEWS FOR SUNDAY, MAY 7, 2006
Today in Iraq
British authorities now say that 5 troops (unspecified detachment) were killed in Basra helicopter shoot-down on Saturday. Yesterday that number was usually given as 4. A car bomb near the central bus station in the Iraqi Shi'ite holy city of Kerbala killed 21 people and wounded 52 on Sunday, police said. The dead were all civilians. Three car bombs hit Baghdad (...) A few hours before the Karbala bombing, Iraqi police found the bullet-riddled bodies of 45 men ! killed in apparent sectarian attacks, an interior ministry official said. He said 28 bodies were found in Baghdad's western Kharkh area, while another 15 were recovered from the eastern Rusafa district. Two other bodies were found in Madan, south of Baghdad. 'All men were handcuffed and shot in the head,' he said...

The man who would deliver his people to Israel
Ernesto Paramo, peacepalestine
According to a press release, Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, said today: "President Abbas called Mr. Olmert, congratulated him on the formation of the new cabinet and offered to resume the partnership between the two sides and to resume negotiations." Many observers always suspected that Abbas was an instrument of Israeli policy and the man Ariel Sharon hand-picked to take charge of a Fatah government in Palestine that ! would be subservient to his designs for a grater Israel. However, it seems that Abbas is now confident enough that the Hamas government will not survive for long and that the Palestinian people will be so hurt that they will not complain if he brings back, again, the corrupt oligarchs of the Fatah old guard to run a government of "National Salvation", that he no longer sees any need for any more pretence...

Mediocre goods of all kinds flood Iraq in absence of controls
Jamal Mudhafar
In the absence of any controls, Iraq has become a dumping ground for all sorts of goods from different sources. Quality is not a criterion anymore, as traders have a free hand to import what they want from wherever they want. In fact Iraq is perhaps the only country in the world relying solely on imports if we exclude its crude exports (...) No certification is required today to assume a role in almost any profession in Iraq. Illiterat! e women squat streets, spread their tattered rugs and display medicine for sale which pharmacists may not have in their stores. Pavement vendors now compete with licensed pharmacists...

Iraq arrests general over death squads - minister
Reuters
Iraq's interior minister said on Sunday his police had arrested a general in the ministry on suspicion of involvement in kidnaps and death squads. Bayan Jabor, who is fighting to keep his job in a new government in the face of criticism that he has tolerated Shi'ite militias inside his ministry, made the announcement in an interview on Al Jazeera television. "We have arrested an officer, a major general ... along with 17 people who kidnapped citizens and i! n some cases killed them. He is now in jail and under investigation," he said...
