After Askariya
Firas Al-Atraqchi, Al-Ahram Weekly
...Who benefits from this? Who benefits from a civil war in Iraq and the killing of tens of thousands? Have Iraqis not warned that the current government was at best incompetent and at worst complicit in further widening the gap between the various Iraqi sects and religions? During his visit earlier this year to Iran, Sadr pledged he would support and defend Iran if it were attacked by the US. As talk of an imminent attack on Iranian nuclear facilities escalated, Iranian officials dropped hints that Iraq would be turned into a hellhole for the Americans before they could ever mount an attack against Iran. Iraq is the battlefield in which Iranian and US interests are currently being played out. Iraq is on the edge of an abyss, one many Iraqis fear looking into...

Olmert: Starving Palestinians to Death
Kurt Nimmo
It should now be obvious Israel fully intends to starve as many Palestinians to death as possible. Palestinian land is divided up into "enclaves," otherwise known as Bantustans, 300 in the West Bank and three in Gaza, peppered with over 120 checkpoints. "The denial of freedom of movement for Palestinians has made any semblance of normal life impossible," explains War on Want, part of the Make Poverty History campaign. "Collective punishment of this kind means people are unable to get to work, school or even hospital while the arbitrary and random nature of curfews is designed to make it impossible for people and civil institutions to make any plans."...

Samarra and the CIA-bred Death Squads in Iraq ..
Imad Khadduri
...Who might have carried out the Samarra bombing? The below two articles, by Max Fuller from globalresearch.ca, provide details on the CIA-bred Death Squads in Iraq that is one plausible explanation. The following article examines evidence that the 'Salvador Option' for Iraq has been ongoing for some time and attempts to say what such an option will mean. It pays particular attention to the role of the Special Police Commandos, considering both the background of their US liaisons and their deployment in Iraq. The article also looks at the evidence for death-squad style massacres in Iraq and draws attention to the almost complete absence of investigation ...

One Nation Under Psy-Ops
Patricia Goldsmith, www.dissidentvoice.org
In my view, Mary McCrory got it right when she said that the Project for a New American Century manifesto reads like it was written in a tree house. Nevertheless, it is documentary evidence showing the direction the worst aspects of our government -- the ones who are now in power -- have been taking for the last thirty plus years. Their goal, as laid out in various PNAC papers, is permanent world domination, and for these people, there is no doubt that the ends justify the means...

Bush Crimes Commission
Scott Ritter testimony, January 20, 2006

SCOTT RITTER’s testimony, taken by RAY McGOVERN
...I will say this, that as early as 1992 the CIA was in possession of enough data to sustain the notion that Iraq had been disarmed in the field of ballistic missiles. By 1993 the CIA had enough data to sustain the notion that Iraq had been disarmed in the field of biological weapons. By 1994, the CIA had enough data to sustain the finding that Iraq was disarmed in the field of chemical weapons. And by 1995, the CIA was in possession enough data to sustain the finding that Iraq was disarmed in the field of biological weapons. This knowledge, this certainty of data, was passed over from the Clinton administration to the Bush administration. Therefore, I would say that the president’s rhetoric was not only baseless, but deliberately misleading...

Camp Casey and Germany
Cindy Sheehan
I have been invited to speak to the European Union Parliament in March in Strasbourg, France. My message will be one of peace and non-violent unity against the out of control murderous and disastrous policies of the Bush Administration. I wrote extensively about meeting with other world leaders in my article, "Friends don't let Friends Commit War Crimes." My message to the EU will focus on "we the people" forcing the leaders of all countries to work diplomatically and peacefully to solve problems. It is time we reach across artificial borders of lines drawn on a map to forge bonds of love and friendship with all members of humanity no matter what color, religion, language group or nationality that other person is...

German Intelligence Gave US Iraqi Defense Plan, Report Says
Michael R. Gordon, The New York Times
Two German intelligence agents in Baghdad obtained a copy of Saddam Hussein's plan to defend the Iraqi capital, which a German official passed on to American commanders a month before the invasion, according to a classified study by the United States military. In providing the Iraqi document, German intelligence officials offered more significant assistance to the United States than their government has publicly acknowledged. The plan gave the American military an extraordinary window into Iraq's top-level deliberations, including where and how Mr. Hussein planned to deploy his most loyal troops...

Volatile Days...
Riverbend, Baghdad Burning
...Yesterday they were showing Sunni and Shia clerics praying together in a mosque and while it looked encouraging, I couldn’t help but feel angry. Why don’t they simply tell their militias to step down- to stop attacking mosques and husseiniyas- to stop terrorizing people? It’s so deceptive and empty on television- like a peaceful vision from another land. The Iraqi government is pretending dismay, but it's doing nothing to curb the violence and the bloodshed beyond a curfew. And where are the Americans in all of this? They are sitting back and letting things happen- sometimes flying a helicopter here or there- but generally not getting involved. I’m reading, and hearing, about the possibility of civil war. The possibility. Yet I’m sitting here wondering if this is actually what civil war is like...

The Case for Impeachment
Lewis H. Lapham, Harper's Magazine
On December 18 of last year, Congressman John Conyers Jr. (D., Mich.) introduced into the House of Representatives a resolution inviting it to form "a select committee to investigate the Administration's intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, retaliating against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment." Although buttressed two days previously by the news of the National Security Agency's illegal surveillance of the American citizenry, the request attracted little or no attention in the press-nothing on television or in the major papers, some scattered applause from the left-wing blogs, heavy sarcasm on the websites flying the flags of the militant right...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 27 February 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.

GI Special 4B25 - Fayetteville Filth - February 26, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
...Insurgents are still staging hundreds of attacks a week. Last week, they struck 555 times, according to American military officials. And while the 555 attacks last week were fewer than the numbers from late last year, in the run-up to the constitutional referendum and national elections, they’re relatively numerous compared with the amount of attacks during the past 17 months...

Tomdispatch Interview: Mark Danner on Bush's State of Exception
Tom Engelhardt & Mark Danner
...In what I've started to call Bush's state of exception, we've now reached the second stage. Many of these steps, including extreme interrogation, eavesdropping, arresting aliens -- one could go down a list -- were taken in relative or complete secrecy. Gradually, they have come into the light, becoming matters of political disputation; and, insofar as the administration's political antagonists have failed to overturn them, they have also become matters of accepted practice, which is where I think we are now. As we sit here, we are approaching the two-year anniversary of the publication of the Abu Ghraib photographs. It would have been the very unusual observer, on seeing those photographs in April 2004, who would have predicted two years later that extreme interrogation would, in effect, have become accepted within the CIA. And though the Senate passed an amendment that forbade it, the President replied with a signing statement that essentially reserved his right to violate that amendment according to his supposed powers as commander-in-chief...

Arnold Schwarzenegger molests Cindy Sheehan
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Verbally, of course. Actually, I'm pretty sure Sheehan, and other family members of Americans killed and maimed in Iraq, are going to feel positively violated by Schwarzenegger's remark on Meet the Press yesterday: MR. RUSSERT: Do you think the Iraq war was a mistake? GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER: No, I think it’s always easy in hindsight to go and say maybe if we wouldn’t have gone in, we wouldn’t have had all this hassle. Yes, I'm sure that's exactly the word that comes to Sheehan's mind. No, Arnold, "hassle" is when your limo driver can't find a parking place at Spago; "tragedy" is when your family member dies or is maimed (physically or mentally) for life to fill the pockets of the rich...

Grand Theft Baghdad
Charlie Cray
President Bush just sent Congress a request for another $72.4 billion for the Iraq war and occupation. Instead of writing another blank check, Congress should commit itself to a thorough investigation of the incompetence and corruption that has undermined the reconstruction mission. At the same time that it demands that the administration provide a clearer overall strategy in Iraq, Congress should establish a permanent committee on war profiteering and corruption modeled after the one Harry Truman chaired during World War II...

Monsters, Inc.
Samuel Bostaph
...Monsters, Inc. is a useful analogue for understanding the main purpose that President George W. Bush’s "war on terror" serves. Since September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq have served as useful monsters in generating screams from the American public. The resulting enhancements in federal government power have enabled the Bush administration to use the military forces of the United States to invade and occupy both Afghanistan and Iraq and to install puppet governments in both countries. It is inconceivable that police in any city in the United States or members of any federal civilian or military agency would be routinely permitted to kill anyone harboring or even being in the vicinity of a domestic fugitive. The enhancement of federal power that the "war on terror" has provided has enabled the adoption of Rules of Engagement by U.S. military forces that permit exactly that treatment of civilian targets in Iraq. The result has been the killing without distinction of an estimated 100,000 Iraqi men, women, and children...

Iraqi Sunnis Rebuild Destroyed Shiite Shrine
Mazen Ghazi and Nada Omran, IOL Correspondents
In a gesture of goodwill, Iraqi Sunnis in the northern city of Samarra are working tirelessly to rebuild the Golden Mosque, one of the holiest Shiite shrines which was devastated in an odious explosion last week. "The initiative came soon after the explosion in solidarity with our Shiite brothers," Abu Oqba Al-Samarrai told IslamOnline.net Monday, February 27, after collecting golden pieces of the mosque's destroyed dome. He said people of different age groups have volunteered to remove the ruble in a love demonstration...

Iraq War: Depleted Uranium Contaminates Europe
LEUREN MORET
"Did the use of Uranium weapons in Gulf War II result in contamination of Europe? Evidence from the measurements of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), Aldermaston, Berkshire, UK," reported the Sunday Times Online (February 19, 2006) in a shocking scientific study authored by British scientists Dr. Chris Busby and Saoirse Morgan. The highest levels of depleted uranium ever measured in the atmosphere in Britain, were transported on air currents from the Middle East and Central Asia; of special significance were those from the Tora Bora bombing in Afghanistan in 2001, and the "Shock & Awe" bombing during Gulf War II in Iraq in 2003...

"We have arrested 10 people - four from the guards of the Golden Tomb shrine," he told CNN television's Late Edition programme. Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday, 26 February 2006.
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.
...In a dispatch posted at 10:20am Mecca time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that pro-American Badr Brigade gunmen backed up by puppet "Interior Ministry Shock Troops (Maghawir)" attacked the home of the leader of the al-Jabbur tribe in the al-Ja'arah area to the south of Baghdad. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in al-Ja'arah, which is not far from al-Mada’in in Diyala Province, as saying that when the puppet regime "Shock Troops" and Badr Brigades showed up at the home of Shaykh Husayn Dawud al-Jabburi, everyone thought it was just another house raid and search. But then after storming into his home they beat the Shaykh to death. After the Shaykh had been killed, local residents attacked the puppet "Shock Troops" and Badr Brigade gunmen, killing three of them and wounding five more. The force then fled the area...

Mehlis and the CIA
Xymphora
Cryptome has been following German investigations of the odd connections of Detlev Mehlis. Mehlis did a preliminary investigation on the Hariri assassination and, based on witness statements, concluded Syria was to blame. When all his first group of witnesses were completely discredited, Mehlis didn't miss a beat, rounded up a second group of witnesses, and determined that his original conclusion was still true. This is very odd behavior for someone who purports to be an objective prosecutor. The travesty of the first report would have directed any honest prosecutor to the inevitable conclusion that the 'facts' have been so messed with in Lebanon that any serious investigation is impossible. Why does Mehlis hate Syria so much? It's almost as of he's working for the CIA. Well . . .
