Last December he was kidnapped in Baghdad along with a 28 year-old British freelance journalist, Phil Sands. The two were rescued quite by accident by US troops during a house raid in January. Phil Sands was released and is now back in London, but the US military decided to hold Salam. The at-Tarimiyah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local eyewitnesses as saying that the Resistance fighters opened fire with their light and medium weapons in the direction of a US Chinook helicopter. Mohammed Mehdi said smugglers seized recently admitted that they were specifically working for foreign troops in the country. Mehdi, who is in charge of antiquities in the Province of Najaf, said the smugglers were given badges that allowed them to enter foreign military camps in southern Iraq.
