Salaam Al-Jubouri, Iraqi journalist and WTI juror imprisoned at Abu Ghraib Cathy Breen, Voices in the WildernessTo my great distress, I recently received news of the detention by US forces of a dear and trusted Iraqi friend, Salam Al Jabouri. Last December he was kidnapped in Baghdad along with a 28 year-old British freelance journalist, Phil Sands. The two were rescued quite by accident by US troops during a house raid in January. Phil Sands was released and is now back in London, but the US military decided to hold Salam. I met Salam in the fall of 2003 while I was living in Baghdad under the US occupation as part of Voices in the Wilderness. Salam was an integral part of of the Voices house, an invaluable resource to us as well as a frequent translator... | The Raid... Riverbend, Baghdad Burning...My aunt was seething quietly, "This is the third time the bastards raid the area in 2 months
Well never get any peace or quiet
" I stood at their bedroom door and watched as she made the bed. They lived in a mixed neighborhood- Sunnis, Shia and Christians. It was a relatively new neighborhood that began growing in the late eighties. Most of the neighbors have known each other for years. "We dont know what theyre looking for
La Ilaha Ila Allah
"(...) Last time they had raided my aunts area, they took away four men on their street alone. Two of them were students in their early twenties- one a law student, and the other an engineering student, and the third man was a grandfather in his early sixties. There was no accusation, no problem- they were simply ordered outside, loaded up into a white pickup truck and driven away with a group of other men from the area. Their families havent heard from them since and they visit the morgue almost daily in anticipation of finding them dead. (...) Its almost funny- only a month ago, we were watching a commercial on some Arabic satellite channel- Arabiya perhaps. They were showing a commercial for Iraqi security forces and giving a list of numbers Iraqis were supposed to dial in the case of a terrorist attack
You call THIS number if you need the police to protect you from burglars or abductors
You call THAT number if you need the National Guard or special forces to protect you from terrorists
But
Who do you call to protect you from the New Iraqs security! forces? ... Read the full article / Leggi l'articolo completo: http://www.uruknet.info/?p=20517 |
| Shed Your Addiction: Beyond Mere Survival in the American Dystopia Jason Miller1984 has come to pass, both chronologically and in the Orwellian sense. Americans are "liberators" in Iraq. Opponents of this "peace initiative" are "doubleplusungood". Unchecked by the judiciary, the NSA electronically trolls for perpetrators of "crimethink". Pundits and the "liberal media" (owned by a handful of monolithic corporations despised by people with the values which many define as liberal) have become the Ministry of Truth for the Party. I recently witnessed Bill OReilly as he delivered a blistering verbal castigation to his "guest" because the man opposed Americas imperial occupations and war crimes in the Middle East. In the next breath, OReilly expressed his sympathy and compassion for the victims of 9/11. Ironically, the victim of OReillys abusive tirade had lost his father in the collapse of the WTC... | Dick Cheney Is Not Above The Law John NicholsTwenty-two members of the House have now signed on as co-sponors of the call by Representative John Conyers, D-Michigan, to establish a select committee of the Congress to investigate whether the Bush administration's actions before and after the invasion of Iraq violated Constitutional requirements, statutes and standards in a manner that would merit impeachment of the president or vice president (...) In addition to seeking a review of whether the administration began planning to go to war before obtaining authorization from Congress, along with investigations of the White House's manipulation of pre-war intelligence and encouragement and countenancing of torture, the Conyers resolution proposes to examine steps taken by the administration to retaliate against critics. It is that final concern that could prove to be the most immediate threat to a member of the administration -- now that National Journal is reporting that Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, has told a federal grand jury that he was "authorized" by Cheney and other White House "superiors" to disclose classified information to journalists as part of a scheme to defend the Bush administration's manipulation of prewar intelligence in order to make the "case" for going to war with Iraq... | Muslims now are the European Jews in the 30s and 40s Baghdad DwellerIf I read this a month ago I will never believe it but now I have many reasons to believe. "Muslims hate" is becoming a global policy and we can compare it to the campaign against the European Jews in the 30s and 40s. Started and orchestrated by Bush and his corrupt administration in 9-11, the goal of the campaign is to create fear from a virtual enemy, associate every Muslim and Arab with terrorism and to rally the public opinion against the Muslims... | The War Goes On, Unreported... Eric Alterman, www.huffingtonpost.comAs the "coalition forces" lurch toward the third anniversary of the Bush administrations ill-fated March 2003 invasion of Iraq, the members of the media stand poised to embark on yet another round of navel-gazing over their role in first helping to enable, and later make sense of, this senseless war a war that has proven as dangerous to journalists as anyone else...
