Terror test for Parliament

GOVERNMENT officials may ask a security agency to test the counter-
terrorist screen around Parliament by carrying out a mock attack on
the building without warning security staff.
The suggestion came from Victorian senator Robert Ray yesterday
during an Estimates Committee hearing examining security measures
that cost $12 million.
The defences include a $2 million system of bollards across roads
and a wall designed to stop terrorists charging the building with a
truck bomb.
"Are you going to have it tested?" Senator Ray asked Senate
president Paul Calvert. "Are you going to commission one of the
other agencies of government to test the security in this building?

Lyon to simulate terror attacks

PARIS, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Emergency services are on call in Lyon
Monday night, as the city simulates a series of explosions similar
to the terrorist attacks that hit Madrid and London.
The simulation envisions three bombs exploding in less than an hour,
starting at 8:45 p.m.
The first two explosions theoretically target the city's subway
system.
One bomb destroys a train. Then, eight minutes later, a suicide
bomber targets another part of the transportation system.
At 9:30 p.m. local time, a third simulated explosion takes place,
this time in front of Lyon's crowded city hall.
The toll in the exercise: 40 dead, 130 wounded and scores of shocked
survivors.
The simulated attacks, which will include some 1,400 French police,
fire fighters and other experts, are the latest to be staged by
French security officials.
A similar simulation has already taken place in Paris.
Like other European countries, France is trying to prepare for a
scenario in which it is the latest country to be hit by terrorist
