Missing Anchor: The Plane Truth  (too bad it's not an admission about 9/11 fakery)
Now that's dedication . . . to golf: CNN's Aaron Brown paid $13,000 to charter a jet to California last week to play in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. (Gino Domenico - AP/File Photo)

We think we finally understand why CNN star Aaron Brown might have been a tad reluctant to interrupt his Saturday golf game -- at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Desert, Calif. -- to rush to Los Angeles and anchor his network's coverage of the Columbia shuttle disaster.

Yesterday CNN confirmed that last Tuesday night, after anchoring the State of the Union address, Brown spent around $13,000 of his own money to charter a private jet from Washington so he could make his Wednesday morning tee time. Initially Brown had planned to fly commercial, a CNN spokeswoman told us, but those plans fell apart when President Bush's speech was scheduled. An expensive charter flight was Brown's only option if he was to keep his commitment in California.

CNN yesterday reiterated its position that the network is happy that Brown was able to anchor its Sunday night coverage -- more than 36 hours after CBS's Dan Rather rushed to his own studio. "This is a non-issue," a CNN spokeswoman told us. "The reason Aaron didn't immediately return to New York was because the decision was made very early on that Miles O'Brien, CNN's space correspondent, would continue anchoring because of his particular expertise in this area. CNN asked Aaron to anchor Sunday's coverage out of Houston, which he did, and continue to lead-anchor throughout the week."

But we weren't alone in our befuddlement yesterday, as the story of Brown's on-air absence rolled down the runway and gained altitude. Various media outlets reported that immediately after the shuttle catastrophe, Tom Brokaw cut short a snorkeling cruise in the Caribbean to fly to Florida and anchor NBC's broadcast from Cape Canaveral; Hamptons denizen Peter Jennings slugged it out on the Long Island Expressway to take the helm at ABC; and Rather threw on his suit and hurtled out of his Upper East Side town house toward West 57th Street. But for Brown -- who, at an estimated $1.5 million a year, earns a fraction of what these guys make -- $13,000 is real money. And for us, it's unreal money.
