ROME (Reuters) - Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena, shot and wounded after being freed in Iraq, said Sunday U.S. forces may have deliberately targeted her because Washington opposed Italy's policy of dealing with kidnappers.

The problem continues to be this: There are so many horrible things being done by these crackheads that it's too overwhelming for the average person to get outraged over any one thing.

Saturday, March 05, 2005

Edward Wong, Jason Horowitz and the New York Times are either glossing or working for "The Clampdown"
So the New York Times covers the release (and shooting at) of "a kidnapped Italian journalist."
They put two reporters on it (Edward Wong & Jason Horowitz's front page "Italian Hostage Released In Iraq, Is Shot By G.I.'s"). In paragraph two, we get "Italian journalist"'s name: Giuliana Sgrena.

Ah yes, Sgrena. Let's hop in the time machine and dart back to February 17th for "The Gatekeeper of Record can't find Giuliana Sgrenea's full remarks, Beale tells us "US Gloss Masks Nerves over Iraq," and bungling the PBS story ." Remember that? Where Giuliana Sgrenea's taped statements were severely reduced by the Gatekeeper of Record?

Here's a reminder:

"People are dying every day, thousands of people are in prison, children, the elderly, women are raped, people die because they have nothing to eat, no electricity, no water," she said. "I beg everyone, all those who have voted with me against the war, against the occupation, please help me, these people should not suffer any more . . . Please help me, nobody should come to Iraq any more . . . not even journalists."

If you read that, you weren't reading the Times Feb. 17th since the reporters (James Glanz & Dexter Filkins) 'glossed' over that part. The gloss goes on.

There's outrage being expressed over this but you won't find it in the Times. You won't find reference to Reporters Without Borders eithers. But you will get this gem of bad reporting:

Political analysts doubted that the shooting would strain the relationship between Italy and the United States, or threaten the mission of Italy's roughly 3,000 troops in Iraq.

Political analysts? Robert Novak's in the Green Zone? What the hell?

You've got Wong reporting largely from the Green Zone, Horowitz from Rome, James Glanz tossing in from Baghdad, Kirk Semple from London and Steven R. Weisman and Thom Shanker from D.C. Who spoke to "political analysts?" Who are these political analysts?

They serve the purpose to allay concerns and tell the reader "Nothing to see here, move along." That may be the reason they are included. But what political analysts from what countries? There's no need for anony-mice to sneak into this story to provide that irrelevant bit of info.

Ben: I thought the NYT was supposed to have struck these anonymous sources? I also find it very interesting that the reporters tell us that these check points shootings "of innocent vehicles . . . have taken place in recent months, and have been documented by reporters and photographers." Exactly where in NYT have these photos been shown? I'm not remembering any "Photographs . . . showed the surviving children covered in their parents' blood" in NYT. I am remembering tons of unnamed sources rushing in to tell us "everything's cool, everything's fine, stay the course! stay the course!" repeatedly. I'll assume these anonymous sources are from the State Department and that they and the paper are attempting to minimize the ugly truth before it can break out.

Considering the way the story of Giuliana Sgrena's kidnapping has played out in Italy, who indeed are these 'wise' political analysts that say there will be no impact from this? Who are these big smarties, these anony-mice, so quick to rush in with words the Bully Boy administration no doubt finds reassuring? The coverage of the kidnapping has been strong in the Italian press but our 'wise analysts' shake their Magic 8 Ball and deliver instant 'wisdom' to us via the Times.

Look Giuliana Sgrena is already speaking and the reaction, as reported elsewhere, suggests anony-mice need to scurry for cover right about now.

Robin Pomeroy reporting for Reuters :

The incident could rekindle anti-war sentiment in Italy, where public opinion opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

From the BBC :

Her left-wing newspaper Il Manifesto says a peace rally will be held in Rome later on Saturday.
The death of one of Italy's most senior intelligence officers in the shooting cast a pall of gloom over what should have been a joyous occasion, says our Rome correspondent.
Mr Calipari is being portrayed as a national hero in Saturday's Italian press for his courage in saving Ms Sgrena's life.

The BBC has an audio & video report (no transcript) "Italy demands US take responsibility ."

From Rory Carroll, John Hooper and and Sam Jones in The Guardian, we learn that :

"This news, which should have be a moment of celebration, has been ruined by this fire fight," Mr [Gabriele] Polo told Italian television. "An Italian agent has been killed by an American bullet. A tragic demonstration which we never wanted that everything that's happening in Iraq is completely senseless and mad."

[Note, the Times today reduces Polo's statement to "everything that's happening in Iraq is completely senseless and mad." Apparently Polo's remarks must have gone through Bill Keller's beloved "filter" before making it into print. Remember the "filter" that Bill Keller was whining about last week -- the one that those darn bloggers refuse to respect!]

From AFP :

Meanwhile, about 100 anti-globalization protesters gathered outside the US embassy here and called for a withdrawal of the 3,000 Italian troops from Iraq, Berlusconi's resignation and support for Calipari's family.
They carried a banner reading: "Bush has changed: now he even kills Italians".

From the BBC (again):

This is a serious diplomatic incident between the US and Italy, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome.

From (Robin Pomeroy) Reuters :

"I don't believe a word of the American version," said Oliviero Diliberto, head of the Italian Communist party, part of the main left-wing block led by former premier Romano Prodi.
"The Americans deliberately fired on Italians. This is huge. All of the center-left must vote in parliament for the withdrawal of our troops."

From AFP, we learn :

A tempest was brewing over the tragic mishap on the road to the Baghdad airport late Friday when US soldiers opened fire on Sgrena's speeding convoy, leaving an Italian secret service agent dead who shielded the female journalist from the bullets.
Italian newspapers warned the government against a cover-up given Berlusconi's cozy relationship with Washington. The US ambassador to Rome was summoned to the PM's office to explain the friendly fire incident.

Adhering to their lust for "official sources" (nameless), the Times rushes in to assure readers in this country that there's nothing to worry about, nothing to be concerned about, "political analysts" who are unnamed and apparently country-less "doubted that the shooting would strain the relationship between Italy and the United States," the New York Timid rushes to tell us.

And did you catch that? "Convoy." It's not a part of the story in the Times.

From Reporters Without Borders :

In yesterday's incident, the convoy of cars taking Sgrena back to Baghdad following her release from captivity was fired on by US military at a checkpoint near the airport. One of the Italian military officers protecting her was killed and at least one other was wounded. Sgrena was wounded in the shoulder.

The Times doesn't tell you word one about a "convoy of cars," so let's fill in some of the pieces that can't get past this morning's gloss.

Reuters (Robin Pomeroy):

But in comments reported by ANSA news agency, Sgrena told Rome investigating magistrates during a debriefing that the car was not going fast and there was no real checkpoint.
"The firing was not justified by the speed of our car," she reportedly said, adding it was traveling at a "regular" speed.
"It wasn't a checkpoint, but a patrol which shot as soon as it had lit us up with a spotlight. We had no idea where the shots were coming from."

Over at Daily Kos, gilgamesh is covering details emerging from other reports :

The Americans shut down the cell phones of our agents who were with Giuliana. They shut them off while they [the agents] were speaking with Silvio Berlusconi, they prevented the emergency medical technicians from approaching the wounded," Scolari recounts, basing himself on the eyewitness testimony of the Italian secret service agents at the scene. But how is it possible that all this was allowed to happen?" In that moment I shouted at the premier [Berlusconi] that your war is to blame for this. This war is madness and these are the results that it produces.

From AFP :

Her companion, who traveled with her from Baghdad, leveled serious accusations at the US troops involved in the incident, saying the shooting had been deliberate. "The Americans and Italians knew about (her) car coming," Pier Scolari said on leaving Celio hospital.
"They were 700 meters (yards) from the airport, which means that they had passed all checkpoints."
Friday's shooting was heard by Berlusconi's aides who were on the phone with one of the intelligence officers, said Scolari. "Then the US military silenced the cellphones," he charged.
"Giuliana had information, and the US military did not want her to survive," he added.

At another time, one where reporting was valued, the Times might be making noises about the potential of this international incident for tremendous fallout across the board. Instead, Keller's beloved filter drains the story of any sense of tragedy and any sense of repurcussions.

You're working for the clampdown

"Going to War With the Army You Have"
By Michael Schwartz
Introduction by Tom Engelhardt
"'If you look back over the last year we estimate we have killed or captured about 15,000 people as part of this counter-insurgency,' [Gen. George] Casey, the only four-star American general in Iraq, told reporters." (January 26, 2005 )

"Even Bush seemed a bit taken aback by participants' gushing praise. When one man went on just a little too long about his admiration for the president, Bush gently steered him to the topic at hand."

This is absolutely amazing . It's the kind of incident that makes you convinced AP has a grudge against one of the candidates, or a crush on one of the others. Either way, they printed an outright lie, they knew it, yet didn't challenge it, correct it, or let the other side counter it.

Ruppert on 911 Truth (taken from Libertyforum.com

Statement by Michael C. Ruppert

"More than thirty-five times now, and in nine countries, I have lectured
on 9/11. The average attendance at the lectures has been between 400 and
500 people. In an estimated sixty-five per sent of those lectures, in
question and answer sessions lasting sometimes up to three hours I have
been asked why I don't pursue the physical evidence inconsistencies of
9/11. At least 9,100 people have heard me say something like:

"I don't for a minute believe that an airliner hit the Pentagon. And no
one has ever seen a video of an airliner hitting the Pentagon because
there isn't one. It doesn't look like the WTC towers collapsed because of
the impacts and the way that they collapsed doesn't make sense. But if I,
with some measure of journalistic credibility, and my readers on Capitol
Hill and in universities start writing stories about these things, I wind
up in either a journalistic suicide mission, or in the improbable place of
having to explain where the airliner that didn't hit the Pentagon went or
how the towers were brought down. There is a mountain of physical evidence
that blows the government story in my mind, but my experience says that it
will never penetrate the consciousness of the American people in a way
that will bring about change. What will penetrate, from my experience, is
taking non-scientific reports that most people instantly accept as
credible, whether news reports or government statements or documents, and
merely showing that they are lies. That opens the wedge, and removes any
reliance upon expert or scientific testimony which is typically used to
confuse simple facts. From there, you can begin to show people all the
other documentary evidence of foreknowledge, planning and participation."

Advocates of legalizing marijuana disagreed, saying the trend was largely due to an increase in marijuana arrests and had almost nothing to do with more people seeking treatment because they thought their own health was at risk.
"They have the option of going into treatment for marijuana or going to jail," said Paul Armentano, senior policy analyst for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

March 4, 2005 OP-ED COLUMNIST Deficits and Deceit By PAUL KRUGMAN

Four years ago, Alan Greenspan urged Congress to cut taxes, asserting that the federal government was in imminent danger of paying off too much debt. On Wednesday the Fed chairman warned Congress of the opposite fiscal danger: he asserted that there would be large budget deficits for the foreseeable future, leading to an unsustainable rise in federal debt. But he counseled against reversing the tax cuts, calling instead for cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Does anyone still take Mr. Greenspan's pose as a nonpartisan font of wisdom seriously? When Mr. Greenspan made his contorted argument for tax cuts back in 2001, his reputation made it hard for many observers to admit the obvious: he was mainly looking for some way to do the Bush administration a political favor. But there's no reason to be taken in by his equally weak, contorted argument against reversing those cuts today. To put Mr. Greenspan's game of fiscal three-card monte in perspective, remember that the push for Social Security privatization is only part of the right's strategy for dismantling the New Deal and the Great Society. The other big piece of that strategy is the use of tax cuts to "starve the beast." Until the 1970's conservatives tended to be open about their disdain for Social Security and Medicare. But honesty was bad politics, because voters value those programs. So conservative intellectuals proposed a bait-and-switch strategy: First, advocate tax cuts, using whatever tactics you think may work - supply-side economics, inflated budget projections, whatever. Then use the resulting deficits to argue for slashing government spending. And that's the story of the last four years. In 2001, President Bush and Mr. Greenspan justified tax cuts with sunny predictions that the budget would remain comfortably in surplus. But Mr. Bush's advisers knew that the tax cuts would probably cause budget problems, and welcomed the prospect. In fact, Mr. Bush celebrated the budget's initial slide into deficit. In the summer of 2001 he called plunging federal revenue "incredibly positive news" because it would "put a straitjacket" on federal spending. To keep that straitjacket on, however, those who sold tax cuts with the assurance that they were easily affordable must convince the public that the cuts can't be reversed now that those assurances have proved false. And Mr. Greenspan has once again tried to come to the president's aid, insisting this week that we should deal with deficits "primarily, if not wholly," by slashing Social Security and Medicare because tax increases would "pose significant risks to economic growth." Really? America prospered for half a century under a level of federal taxes higher than the one we face today. According to the administration's own estimates, Mr. Bush's second term will see the lowest tax take as a percentage of G.D.P. since the Truman administration. And don't forget that President Clinton's 1993 tax increase ushered in an economic boom. Why, exactly, are tax increases out of the question? O.K., enough about Mr. Greenspan. The real news is the growing evidence that the political theory behind the Bush tax cuts was as wrong as the economic theory. According to starve-the-beast doctrine, right-wing politicians can use the big deficits generated by tax cuts as an excuse to slash social insurance programs. Mr. Bush's advisers thought that it would prove especially easy to sell benefit cuts in the context of Social Security privatization because the president could pretend that a plan that sharply cut benefits would actually be good for workers. But the theory isn't working. As soon as voters heard that privatization would involve benefit cuts, support for Social Security "reform" plunged. Another sign of the theory's falsity: across the nation, Republican governors, finding that voters really want adequate public services, are talking about tax increases. The best bet now is that Mr. Bush will manage to make the poor suffer, but fail to make a dent in the great middle-class entitlement programs. And the consequence of the failure of the starve-the-beast theory is a looming fiscal crisis - Mr. Greenspan isn't wrong about that. The middle class won't give up programs that are essential to its financial security; the right won't give up tax cuts that it sold on false pretenses. The only question now is when foreign investors, who have financed our deficits so far, will decide to pull the plug. E-mail: krugman@nytimes.com Bob Herbert is on vacation. Emerging Threats: Overclassification and Pseudo-classification

Good afternoon, my name is Sibel Edmonds. I have been invited to provide
you with testimony today regarding my direct experience with the use of
excessive secrecy, rare privileges, and over-classification by the
Department of Justice against me during the past three years. Thank you
for giving me this opportunity. I believe that my case clearly
illustrates how the government uses secrecy laws and classification to
avoid accountability, to cover up problems and wrongdoing, and to gain
unfair legal advantage in court.

I began working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a
language specialist for several Middle Eastern languages starting shortly
after 9/11, and was granted Top Secret Clearance. During my work, I
became aware of problems within the translation unit involving criminal
conduct against our national interests, potential espionage, serious
security breaches threatening our intelligence, intentional
mistranslation, and blocking of intelligence. I was asked, and later
ordered, to refrain from reporting these allegations. I reported them,
together with evidence, to higher management within the bureau. They
refused to take any action, and again, they asked me not to pursue them.
I then took these issues and evidence to the Department of Justice Office
of the Inspector General and to the Senate Judiciary Committee, because I
believed that according to our laws these were the appropriate steps to
take in this situation. As a result, I was retaliated against, was ordered
to submit to a polygraph, and had my home computer confiscated. Finally,
in March 2002 I was fired. The only explanation I received for getting
fired was 'for the convenience of the government.'

In March 2002, the Senate Judiciary Committee began investigating my case
and allegations, and in June and July 2002, during two unclassified
briefings with the staff of Senators Grassley and Senator Leahy, the FBI
publicly confirmed all of my core allegations. These two Senators issued
public statements and letters regarding these confirmations and my case,
demanding expedited investigation by the Inspector General and response
from the FBI. These letters and statements were widely disseminated in
the media and on the Internet; including on the Senators' own websites.
When the judge overseeing my legal cases asked the government to produce
any unclassified materials that was relevant to the substance of my
allegations, the government took a truly extraordinary step: it moved to
retroactively classify these letters, statements, and news releases that
had been public for almost two years. It is quite clear that the
government's motivation was not to protect national security, but rather
to protect itself from embarrassment and accountability. Senator Grassley
characterized this retroactive classification as 'ludicrous,' and 'gagging
the congress.'

However, the Congress complied. Only after this highly unusual retroactive
classification was challenged in court by POGO, a government watchdog
organization, did the Department of Justice reverse itself and declare
that this information was not considered classified and a danger to
national security after all. I would like to request that these letters
from Senators Grassley and Leahy be included in the record of today's
hearing.

In March 2002, the Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General
began investigating my allegations, and in July 2004, after almost two
years delay, completed its investigation. The Department of Justice
immediately moved to classify the entire report and its findings. Six
months later, they allowed the Inspector General to release only an
unclassified version of its executive summary. This unclassified version
confirmed my core allegations; concluded that I was fired for reporting
misconduct; and stated that the FBI had failed to investigate the reported
espionage, even though other facts, witnesses and evidence supported my
allegations. I would like to request that the Inspector General's report
also be included in the record of today's hearing.

In the summer of 2002 I also began to pursue legal remedies to challenge
my unjust dismissal, and filed cases under First Amendment and Privacy
Act, and the Freedom of Information Act. Rather than respond to the
merits of my claim, in October 2002, Attorney General Ashcroft asserted a
rarely invoked 'State Secrets Privilege', arguing that the entire case
must be dismissed in the name of national security, even if my allegations
were correct. The Department of Justice asked the courts to throw out the
case without any hearings, depositions, or discovery. Even though the
Department of Justice's own Inspector General has confirmed the
seriousness of my allegations and concluded that I was fired for raising
them, the DOJ has continued to insist that my case cannot go forward
because it would jeopardize national security. So far, the DOJ has been
successful in this effort to silence me. In June 2004, the court ruled in
favor of this far-reaching assertion of the "state secrets privilege".
Currently I am appealing my case, and the Department of Justice is still
invoking the "state secrets privilege" and arguing that everything about
my issues is covered by classification.

The government invoked the state secrets privilege a second time in an
attempt to block me from being deposed in a case brought by families of
those killed on September 11 against Saudi individuals and entities
alleged to have financed al-Qaeda. The government insisted that almost
every single question that the families wished to ask me would require the
disclosure of classified information.

The problems I have reported have serious consequences to our national
security; and have already been confirmed by the Inspector General's
report and the inquiry of Senators Grassley and Leahy. Translation units
are the frontline in gathering, translating, and disseminating
intelligence. A warning in advance of the next terrorist attack may, and
probably will, come in the form of a message or document in a foreign
language that will have to be translated. If an attack then occurs, which
could have been prevented by acting on information in such a message, who
will tell family members of the new terrorist attack victims that nothing
more could have been done? There will be no excuse that we did not know,
because we do know.

Yet, knowing full well the seriousness of these confirmed issues and
problems, rather than addressing them the FBI and the Department of
Justice spend time and effort to cover them up by over use of secrecy and
excessive classification. Contrary to their claims, they seem to be far
more concerned with avoiding accountability than protecting our national
security. I believe that my case clearly illustrates the federal
government's capricious use of secrecy laws and classification to cover up
problems and wrongdoing, and to avoid accountability, regardless of the
damage to our national security. It demonstrates as well how excessive
secrecy and pseudo classification can be used as retaliation tactics
against national security whistleblowers.

This type of excessive classification and the effort to expand the
"statesecrets privilege" does not increase our national security but
actually makes us less safe and it impedes oversight of the executive
branch, as part of the checks and balances demanded by our Constitution.

Thank you again for inviting me to testify today. You are the first
Congressional Committee after three years to request my testimony and hear
my story. I believe this testimony is a good first step in examining this
situation but what is really needed is an actual Congressional
investigation. Therefore, with respect for your critical role in our
Constitution's system of checks and balances, I request that you be the
first Congressional Committee to investigate not just my case but what is
going on over at the FBI and the Justice Department regarding the very
serious problem of over-classification and the abuse of secrecy. Thank
you.

March 2, 2005 Supreme Court Rules Cold War Spies Cannot Sue CIA By REUTERS

Filed at 11:17 a.m. ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Soviet-bloc couple recruited to spy for the CIA cannot sue the agency for reneging on a promise of lifetime pay for their Cold War services, a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday. The high court ruled in an opinion written by Chief Justice William Rehnquist that the husband and wife's lawsuit cannot proceed. It said courts are barred by a 130-year-old precedent from reviewing claims over payment for spying. The Supreme Court cited as the basis for its ruling its 1875 decision that the heirs of William Lloyd could not sue to recover money promised by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861 for spying on Confederate troops during the Civil War. ``The possibility that a suit may proceed and an espionage relationship may be revealed ... is unacceptable,'' Rehnquist wrote in the 10-page opinion. ``Forcing the government to litigate these claims would also make it vulnerable to 'graymail,' i.e., individual lawsuits brought to induce the CIA to settle a case (or prevent its filing) out of fear that any effort to litigate the action would reveal classified information that may undermine ongoing covert operations,'' he said. The ruling was a defeat for the couple who have been identified only by the pseudonyms John and Jane Doe. Former citizens of a Soviet-bloc nation, they defected to the United States and became U.S. citizens. The couple said the CIA recruited them during the Cold War to spy after they expressed interest in defecting to the United States. The husband was a high-ranking diplomat. They said they had been assured that if they spied the CIA would arrange for their eventual resettlement in the United States and ensure their financial and personal security for life. They said they carried out their end of the bargain, but the CIA reneged and abandoned them. After the couple came to the United States, they eventually resettled in the Seattle area. Beginning in 1987, the husband got a job with the assistance of the CIA, which gave him a false resume and references. The couple received as much as $27,000 a year from the CIA until the husband began earning more than that in his job. But he lost his job at a bank in 1997 as a result of a corporate merger. The couple said the CIA told them that they had already been paid enough for their services and further support would not be provided. Their lawsuit sought a court order that the CIA pay them financial support, pending review of their case by the agency. A federal judge and then a U.S. appeals court based in San Francisco ruled their lawsuit could go forward. But the Supreme Court said the appeals court was wrong in holding that the its 1875 decision does not require dismissal of the couple's claims. Rehnquist said that in the case of a former spy, the core concern of the 1875 decision -- preventing the disclosure of the spy's secret relationship with the government -- applies. The 1875 ruling held the president had the power to bind the United States to contracts with secret agents, and that allowing a former spy to bring a lawsuit to enforce the terms of the contract would be incompatible with its secret nature. Rehnquist rejected the argument that the case could proceed with other protections to ensure classified information is not disclosed. Don't know what all of this means: Tsunami Quake Doubts
And Observations
By Harry Mason
orbitx@bigpond.com
3-1-5
The Sumatra-Andaman Arc seismic event is STILL releasing huge amounts of energy in the form of clusters of 5-6 richter quakes - each one of which can level a city. This is a major CONTINUING event and we have not heard the last of this location. It continues to let rip with 5-6 richter quake clusters along a 1200km front. Natural or man made is not really critical in the scheme of things (nice to know though) BUT rather what is going on in the igneous intrusive department underneath and along this suture zone could be EXTREMELY CRITICAL - given the island arcs incredible explosive volcanic history eg Krakatoa and Taba to name but two. These type of explosive events are not spoil your whole day or even week or year in character. Rather they could be of a type to spoil your whole decade or century or our very human existance on the planet. If the 9 richter event was manmade then it looks like things have run out of control as the events along the Andaman-Nicobar-Sumatra zone cannot be called "normal" aftershocks. Joe Vialls thinks it was a US H-Bomb in the trench. Personally I seriously doubt that and/or the scalar EM weapon scenario. My reasoning is based upon the extreme solar activity during most of December and the slightly preceeding Macquarie Island 8 richter quake - suggesting an unstable plate stress regime was unfolding at the time due to planetary magnetosphere coupling with solar energy output ??? I note the "day following" the 9 richter quake saw a reported hugely massive energy blast in a distant sector of space. US scalar energy researchers also noted a scalar Tx that gave a few hours warning of the 9 richter quake - something they have noted as preceeding many absolutely natural quake and volcanic events in the western USA. It is quite possible that these off planet and solar - planetary events link with the 9 richter in some sort of coupled scalar EM energy way. There remain huge unknowns concerning the energy couplings of planets, stars, and the vacuum. It is very possible that these systems couple to produce mass condensation at planetary centres, and the entire range of quakes, volcanic activity, plus all manner of planetary expansion tectonics ??? Although fascinating science speculation WHAT we really need to know exactly what is going on UNDER this newly activated tremblor zone. Krakatoa started with massive earthquakes in January 1883 which continued until March 1883 - then Krakatoa began to smoke - more quakes led to on-off volcanic activity which led in August 1883 to the culminating terrific explosions of 27th August 1883. Some 40-50,000 died as a result of this explosion and the tsunamis it produced. The real death toll was possibly much higher as communications then were fairly primitive. Bodies were washing ashore in pumice rafts on the South African coast 2 years later. Taba was a similar but significantly larger Sumatran arc volcanic explosive event 54,000 years ago which DNA researchers believed nearly extinguished human life on this planet. Krakatoa's explosion put 12 cubic kilometers of ash into the atmosphere. Taba's explosion is estimated to have put 2,400 cubic kilometers into the atmosphere. We really do need some good geoscience research into this continuing scenario - PRONTO. The British marine geoscience surveys of the sea bed are a good start BUT we need to get an idea of the 3D tomography of intrusive activity under this zone. The adjoining Asian and Australian communities need future prediction advice ASAP. Regards, Harry Mason Was Tsunami caused by human hands trying to develop alternative energy from Tectonic plate frictions and movements? Staff Reporter - India Daily.com Feb. 9, 2005 Many in South Asia now believe that the Tsunami was created by some entity trying to develop alternate energy from Tectonic plate frictions and movements. According to Geologists, Scientists and Thermodynamic experts, enormous amount of energy is involved in Tectonic plate frictions and movements. If that energy can be tapped, the world will be full of free energy. It may make sense for some human hands to try and see if this enormous source of energy can be used to generate and use power - free energy! The tsunami-battered Andaman and Nicobar Islands were on Sunday rocked by a series of eight earthquakes measuring 5 to 5.3 on the Richter scale, even as a slight tremor jolted Uttar Pradesh, India. The quakes, classified as "moderate" by the India Meteorological Department, started occurring just after midnight Saturday and continued till 8.49 a.m. on Sunday. The epicentres of the tremors were located off the east coast of Car Nicobar Island, off the north coast of Camorta and northwest of North Andaman Islands. According to some Geologists in India the epicenter of the aftershocks are steadily moving northwards along a line. Still the aftershocks have strange gaps between them and the after shocks are not getting reduced in Richter scale. The strangest thing observed is another smaller but very similar quake in Uttar Pradesh (a state in India), which is in the Northern India adjacent to the Himalayas. When the epicenters of these quakes are joined with a straight line, it seems that the aftershock epicenter is moving along this line. The aftershocks are between 5.2 and 6.2 in Richter scale. After a series of aftershock there is approximately 78 hours of gap before the next series appears. All these can be just a coincidence and is nothing unusual say some Geologists. But the continuation of this phenomenon for over a month cannot be just coincidental. The sailors in Indian Ocean especially in the area of Andaman-Nicobar as well as Sumatra and in Bay of Bengal are weary of what is happening.

Bad Video, Spectacular Claim, but see it for yourself: Asia Tsunami Proved Biggest War Crime in History
While the western media desperately tries to deflects public interest with ever-increasing Richter figures now up to an hysterical 9.3, the BBC, HMS Scott and others inadvertently prove conclusively that the horrific event of
26 December 2004 was the biggest single war crime in recorded history.

Detention of American Is Defended

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales yesterday strongly defended the Bush administration's decision to detain alleged al Qaeda operative Jose Padilla for more than two years without criminal charges, arguing that the government has the right to hold alleged enemy combatants in the war on terrorism "for the duration of hostilities."
But Gonzales, testifying at a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing on the Justice Department's budget, also said that the administration "has no interest in holding someone indefinitely" and will eventually seek to "dispose of the matter" through criminal charges or other actions.
Gonzales's remarks came after a sharply worded decision Monday by U.S. District Judge Henry F. Floyd, who ruled that detaining Padilla indefinitely without charges is illegal and that he must be charged with a crime or freed within 45 days. The government has said it will appeal.
Padilla, a U.S. citizen who grew up in Chicago, has been held in a naval brig in South Carolina since June 2002, when he was designated an enemy combatant by President Bush. Although he was originally described as plotting with al Qaeda members to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb," the Justice Department has since focused on allegations that he planned to blow up apartment buildings by filling them with natural gas.
Gonzales, the former White House counsel who was sworn in last month as the nation's chief law enforcement official, faced sharp questioning about the Padilla case from Reps. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) and Jose E. Serrano (D-N.Y.). Both argued that Padilla should be given a chance to face trial.
"If I knew the war on terrorism were going to end next year, I would have no problem," said Wolf, chairman of the subcommittee. "But I don't believe it's going to end. . . . And so we cannot continue to keep an American citizen -- this is not [Osama] bin Laden."
Gonzales said that although the administration does not intend to hold Padilla indefinitely, the president has the authority to do so if necessary. The new attorney general also defended the proposal to cut Justice Department grant programs by nearly 50 percent, saying that "difficult decisions were made" because of the rising budget deficits.
